horrid battery life. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

seriously, what the hell is with this phone? ive tried every rom and kernel and my battery life is terrible. i know what is it. its the lcd using between 60-80% of my battery stats and it never seems to lower. ive already ruled out wake locks or apps causing this. every bell and whistle is disabled, screen brightness is down super low and i have a pure black theme.
any opinions on how to solve this before i look into a different device like the note 2 or lg pro?

How long is your battery lasting? It could be bad. I'd go try to swap it out before getting rid of the phone.

this is a new oem battery i just bought it. :crying: i don't have insurance so i cant swap it out.

ya, whats your average total time on the battery? average screen-on time? if both are alarmingly low, you could fully wipe, return to stock and start over. this may clear up your issue.

its the high lcd usage that concerns me. 65-80% is too much. i already did go to stock and start over. as i said ive tried every tw & aosp rom. my old note 2 never had this issue. as far as screen time it depends, i wouldn't say its super low but i just think its draining to fast. simple things just as texting or making a quick phone call.

Yes. OP, you have yet to post any battery hours.

it really varies. i used to be able to get well over a day. now i have to recharge nightly, that's why i bought a new battery. id say screen time goes from 2-2 1/2 hours at times, no higher.

Shut off your phone, it lasts forever that way...... Seriously androids are known battery hogs, maybe try a complete wipe with a fresh flash. And it would help if you did what the others asked for.
I'm on AOKP with a side of ktoon kernel and my device as lasted as long as 26 hours, and I use it both for work and play and I game ALOT.

Setup's in my signature; best battery life I've seen on an Android phone. Easily gets me through the day and then some with moderate use.
I would post battery stats (since it's easy to do screenies now) but I just took it off the charger after messing with NS Tools and it wouldn't be a good representation of my battery life.

Wow...that puts my battery life into perspective. It sucks!
Seriously, I am not getting battery life like that. With moderate usage after ten hours I would say I am in the low 60's battery-wise.

My friend, I think you should have asked this question before ordering it and may be read a thread discussing Galaxy Note issues:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728974
Anyway, if you're after the big display, you won't regret. And be sure to read all the stickies and guides before trying to flash anything
I enjoy mine very much and I hope you'll be happy with yours as well!
p.s. If you purchase a case, make sure it's a "magnet free" one - many users (incl. myself) complained of S-pen interference from the magnet of the case.

Agree! You shouldn't get it.. tommorrow.
Get it now.. :good:
Should't even think of trying the Note.
1. The real big screen will make your eyes taking more time in looking around it.
2. Its vividness will hurt your eyes.
3. You will not be welcome by stationery shop just because of the S-pen.
4. USB drive connecting ability allow you too much flexibility. This may force you to even carry a mouse everywhere with you just for doing something requiring such high precision on the Note.
5. It may waste lots of your times playing high-end HD games due to its too much CPU power.
Don't go for the Note please ^^

To the OP: Do read all the stickies as somebody already said. Flashing is NOT hard on the note, it just requires you to know what you are doing; once you read all the stickies carefully and thoroughly, am quite sure you would know what to flash, what not to and how to flash. Cheers!

Is it too different than flashing other phones?
Like, flash a recovery then copy zip and apply update?
Sent from my GT-I9001 using XDA Premium HD app
the principal is the same yes, But however there is a major bug in the stock ICS kernel(s) can that cause hardbrick (brickbug) when doing a factory reset.
So long as you flash a safe kernel before hand you will be fine, Just read the guides and if you have any issues / questions, dont be afraid to ask.
Also check my Signature for real time IRC chat.
It's confirmed. Will get mine today after work. Got it for about 400 dollars, on my carrier points program.
The only problem I may have will be with kernels?

There's some stickys in development section:
Dr ketans to do with flashing stock roms, and a separate one for rooting and installing cwm.
Another on the superbrick or emmc bug affecting most ics kernels. Includes information on safe kernels that have had emmc format bug removed.
Those are the main ones to get you started.
Welcome, you won't be disappointed!

I played with mine non stop for a whole weekend when I got it, its a great phone. Don't be too put off by the superbrick bug either. There are plenty of safe kernels and some awesome custom roms.

Paranoid on this beast is awesome. If you go for paranoid, I'd recommend using v0.2a rather than 0.3, there's a couple of issues with gps and mms on 0.3. Imilka (the dev has said he's working on an update and he's usually pretty sharpish so think 0.4 will be out v soon.

My note is Thailand version. There's nothing to be worried as long as you're not running yourself into hacking stuffs though I did once and even I did the famous frightening FactoryReset! when I was on Rooted Stock ICS after stuck in booting loops because of playing with VM Heap size tweak (set it below 64m will trigger this, so be careful).
I survive the night and day because of lots sharing in this forum. I learned how to do flashing ROM with Odin and other fearful stuffs I've never even though I would have need to get through it.
So, I recommend you just try using it, as it is first since pre-installed ICS may have something different, with 3 to 5 days/full recharge cycles and then let see any of what will be bothering you.
To have 14+ hours battery life on my Note with normal use (3G/Wifi all times, note taking, Facebook..etc..and of course the XDA app) running stock ICS, I did;
- Rooted
- Battery calibration
- SetCPU profiles
- Leave the SD Card slot empty
- Off auto screen brightness
- Manually control screen brightness, 30% to minimum values are good enough to my eyes
- OFF auto Hovering pen icon (ON only when I really need)
- OFF Screen Capture service (ON only when I really need)
- Freeze un-needed services
It's hard to identify which tweak saves how much % battery life, there are just cumulative tricks from my little experience. Lots of last tweaks are done by TB.

This thread is about the evo 4g and what you guys experienced with it like your favorite roms,kernel,etc..
Most people are leaving sprint because poor data quality but people don't know that sprint is taking them down for better quality faster speeds and possibly 4G LTE in your area.
So all the people who are leaving or just want to share this is the thread for you.

As long as I ran MIUI and as much as I love the ICS ROMs and can't go back, the best ROM ever was Koni Elite Series III with NetArchy-Toast 4.3.2 SBC Havs More Kernel.
EVERYTHING worked. Everything.
Battery life was unreal. I once tested to see how long I could go without a recharge and posted screen shots of 63 hours before I died.
Mason kernels are great, but the Netarchy kernels were incredible on battery life. I've never come close to that on any GB or ICS ROM.
BTW, most people are not leaving Sprint

Oh my I do miss my HTC EVO 4G. I got my first one on January 1st 2011. I drove to my nearest Sprint store hungover to all hell and being able to play with it was probably the only thing that made the hangover better.
Hmm let's see my EVO stats:
Favorite old-school hack:
*I got S-Off using UnrEVOked before it was Revolutionary
Best firmware:
*My best ROM/kernel combo was MikFroYo 4.61 using Netarchy 4.3.4 sbc-cfs-havs-more. I got 34 hours of battery life out of it.
PIcs or it didn't happen right? here's the pic
Favorite Memory:
*I hung out in the #htc-evo-4g channel on freenode for like 18 hours a day. I remember getting to test Myn's Synergy ROM before it was actually released.
Funniest moment:
I was dating someone at the time who was trying to break up with me, but I was flashing a ROM so she wasn't able to get a hold of me. So, she waited another month to do it. I got to bang her several more times before she finally pulled the trigger (she didn't have the guts to do it in person). So, flashing a ROM has actually gotten me laid. I'm with a much better woman now though
Worst moment:
I sold my EVO to Best Buy for $170 in order to purchase the Epic Touch on release day. I should've waited and kept the EVO 4G, I miss it. The great thing is I didn't bother to unhack it first, so when the Best Buy rep saw my custom splash screen, boot animation and that I was running a non-Sense ROM, he didn't ask any questions.
Dumbest moment:
I flashed a kernel that was from a different base than the ROM I was running and I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why my camera wouldn't work.
Greatest moment:
I had that phone for 11 months before I traded it in, more than twice the time I've spent owning any other Android phone. RIP lil buddy!

HAHA I LOVE THOSE MOMENTS u made my morning I was flashing a rom when my friend she was telling me something bcuz she would tell me stuff then get to important stuff so I was like waiting for my rom to finish and the g apps and the MANSON kernel and she asked me on a date which is awkward for me bcuz I alwayz asked girls and my ex pretty much made me not go on a date with her because she was emotionaly hurt and i had to be there and i which of course I would pay for the whole set up for the date like a gentleman then I'm screwed

I'm curious how the battery life has evolved.

Since it's marked stable I wonder if any of the bugs I had mentioned on RC2 were fixed. No longer have my Epic, but still curious to see where development ended up with this.

I don't have my epic anymore either but curious if they ever got the flashlight widget working.

I'm gonna flash later to see if the bugs are still present... what was left???
Flash for video recording, auto flash, focus, slideshows, video MMS, WiFi sleep policy, Bluetooth bugs. (I think)

Battery life is no better for me even with the build prop tweaks ideal was fine when streaming pandora going home lost 25% in 1 hour.

it was just as smooth as always didn't test much because of battery life so i am back to 7
I had problems with receiving calls, on any ics rom. Hopefully its fixed now. About to flash in a few minutes.

Been running for me since 6am this morning. All smooth. I ran every single nightly, and never run into a lot of the issues others did though

just did an upgrade from beta4 -- which was relatively stable minus a couple sms bugs and response here and there.
only wiped cache+dalvik .. worked well so far! i love this phone and it's devs. i wish this wasn't my wife's phone. i'm stuck with a thunderbolt
Running great for me, too soon on battery. Just for the record, streaming via 3g/4g in a moving car is not the best way to test battery life, so many variables. Battery life on the nightlies has been great for me. 20+ hours regularly, with 2h+ on screen time is great in my opinion.

Wow! 20+ really? The first time I tried CM9 I was lucky if I got 4 or 5. What setup are you running?

I know but that is my normal use if it doesn't hold up during normal use then it doesn't work for me. On CM7 I lose about 10-12% during the same commute.
I'm running stock everything, no fancy kernels. I do have the tweaks listed in a post somewhere here in the general section, and I run Juicedefender because I have it setup to turn off data and then check every 30 minutes for email updates etc.. other then that nothing else.

I'm really interested to hear how stable this is. I just flashed the CM9 stable release for the Nexus S 4G and it's been great for a day. If all goes well I'm going to be flashing this on my mother's phone so she can finally get off the outdated stock touchwiz ROM.

GB ROM vs. CM10 ROM on battery life?

Someone said that the Touchwiz 4 or GB ROM is better on battery life then CM1? Is that true?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Battery life depends on many factors.
Try all the available roms for yourself. Anyone can give you an answer, but that doesn't mean it applies to your specific device and battery combination. With regard to battery life and custom roms on any device ... YMMV (your mileage may vary).

Exactly this... there are so many factors on battery life that comparing battery life from one person to another is pretty pointless... but trying the roms out on your phone is a good way to test because you will mainly use your phone the same regardless of the rom you use... so the only way to really tell what is going to have better battery life for you is to flash the roms and try them all out for a few days each....

Thanks . Someone said it depends on the software. But Idk. I only tried CM9 and CM10 because I always loved ICS and JB.

GB Roms definitely have better battery life. Stock touchwiz fc09 rooted running shadow kernel gives a whole days worth of charge with 2 hour screen time. On cm20 you can watch the percentage drop as you use it, doing that on stock fc09 is like watching water boil lol. It also charges faster. 1 percent about every minute.
Of course, YMMV but this is my personal observation. I'm running cm10 cuz I like jb, but once they fix battery drain it'll be great. I know its possible cuz the battery lasts a lot longer on the night lies than the first unofficial and official preview builds.

I would suggest looking at TPR 2.21 if you want to try a GB rom with excellent battery life.

My general experience is the same but on cm10. I typically get 3 hrs screen on time, 20-30 minutes of calls, 20 texts or so, usually an hour of game time...and about 18 hours total up time...and I am at around 15% at the end of the night. That was with the 1012 nightly. So it is definitely a YMMV thing! This is on a epic touch 1800 battery.

I haven't messed with my phone in forever. I currently have a CM7 nightly running on my Epic. Can I just flash a CM10 nightly or will I need to do something first? Like update clockwork mod or flash a different kernel <-- you can see my ignorance showing here.

I was running CM9 when I flashed CM10. I think you can just flash it but I am kind of a newbie. Just do a bit more research. And if you flash cm10, you have to odin back to stock, root, and then flash another ROM you want to flash something besides CM10.

When I jumped from CM7, I went to mounts and storage and wiped everything in there except /sdcard. Then I flashed the ROM and appropriate gapps, and all was fine

If you want to stick with CM10, I've found that the SimplyCM10 kernel actually helped with battery life. YMMV, but I was draining 1800mAH in ~10 hours and it's >12hrs the last couple of days.

I have 1500 mAh and I go to school with 100%, come home with about 40-20% and to me, that's unacceptable. I never flashed kernels because I never thought they really did anything.

If battery life is a major concern for you, then probably avoid CM9 and CM10. But what you get in trade-off is amazing performance and features that only Jelly Bean has. I have a charger or two at home, one in the car and one at work.. plus a couple extra batteries for emergencies. So having the battery last 'all day' just doesn't mean much in my case.
I'm not too concerned with battery life, cause I have 2 stock 1500mAh batteries, and I usually carry around a usb cord in my backpack just in case.
