GB ROM vs. CM10 ROM on battery life? - Epic 4G General

Someone said that the Touchwiz 4 or GB ROM is better on battery life then CM1? Is that true?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app

Battery life depends on many factors.
Try all the available roms for yourself. Anyone can give you an answer, but that doesn't mean it applies to your specific device and battery combination. With regard to battery life and custom roms on any device ... YMMV (your mileage may vary).

Exactly this... there are so many factors on battery life that comparing battery life from one person to another is pretty pointless... but trying the roms out on your phone is a good way to test because you will mainly use your phone the same regardless of the rom you use... so the only way to really tell what is going to have better battery life for you is to flash the roms and try them all out for a few days each....

Thanks . Someone said it depends on the software. But Idk. I only tried CM9 and CM10 because I always loved ICS and JB.

GB Roms definitely have better battery life. Stock touchwiz fc09 rooted running shadow kernel gives a whole days worth of charge with 2 hour screen time. On cm20 you can watch the percentage drop as you use it, doing that on stock fc09 is like watching water boil lol. It also charges faster. 1 percent about every minute.
Of course, YMMV but this is my personal observation. I'm running cm10 cuz I like jb, but once they fix battery drain it'll be great. I know its possible cuz the battery lasts a lot longer on the night lies than the first unofficial and official preview builds.

I would suggest looking at TPR 2.21 if you want to try a GB rom with excellent battery life.

My general experience is the same but on cm10. I typically get 3 hrs screen on time, 20-30 minutes of calls, 20 texts or so, usually an hour of game time...and about 18 hours total up time...and I am at around 15% at the end of the night. That was with the 1012 nightly. So it is definitely a YMMV thing! This is on a epic touch 1800 battery.

I haven't messed with my phone in forever. I currently have a CM7 nightly running on my Epic. Can I just flash a CM10 nightly or will I need to do something first? Like update clockwork mod or flash a different kernel <-- you can see my ignorance showing here.

I was running CM9 when I flashed CM10. I think you can just flash it but I am kind of a newbie. Just do a bit more research. And if you flash cm10, you have to odin back to stock, root, and then flash another ROM you want to flash something besides CM10.

If you want to stick with CM10, I've found that the SimplyCM10 kernel actually helped with battery life. YMMV, but I was draining 1800mAH in ~10 hours and it's >12hrs the last couple of days.

I have 1500 mAh and I go to school with 100%, come home with about 40-20% and to me, that's unacceptable. I never flashed kernels because I never thought they really did anything.

If battery life is a major concern for you, then probably avoid CM9 and CM10. But what you get in trade-off is amazing performance and features that only Jelly Bean has. I have a charger or two at home, one in the car and one at work.. plus a couple extra batteries for emergencies. So having the battery last 'all day' just doesn't mean much in my case.

I'm not too concerned with battery life, cause I have 2 stock 1500mAh batteries, and I usually carry around a usb cord in my backpack just in case.

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'm running CM7, which I've read is very similar to MIUI. When I was using Bionix I could go at least 24 to 36 hrs without charging with my typical minimal use (using edge network). On CM7 I get about 13 to 16 hrs, but CM7 runs rings around Bionix as far as responsiveness goes. It's fast and smooth!

OMG I am so unprepared for this day!!!

So like everyone else I've been waiting and waiting for root. Now that I have it I made a big mistake by not deciding on which rom to start with. So many choices. What's a man to do?!?!?
Just start flashing.

Yeah. I've found the best combination (on this end, at least) has been CM7 & Tiamat 3.3.7. I use the non SBC but you may want to use the SBC one to really squeeze out what you can. As always, things may or may not be the same for everyone, so testing out different combinations is encouraged.
Downloading OMGB and Synergy-Kindom right now. Going to do some playing around and then once I have that out of my system then I'll hunt down the holy grail for max battery life. I never really liked CM7 but maybe I'll give it another try.
I guess I'm going to have to put a rooted stock on and backup my game data because damn it I'm not going to start Cut The Rope and Angry Birds over again.

As good as I've seen. But I use my phone a lot, so my experience may not fall in line with others. If I can snag 8-10 hours and 3-4 hours of screen on time (which obviously varies depending on what is happening when screen is on and phone in use) then I'm content. Not necessarily saying from 90-some% to 0% as I tend to plug it in before it completely dies, but around 20-30%. It all depends, hard to throw out a legit average / value / number as it depends on multiple factors. But, for me, that combo has been as solid as any.
Of course the first thing I did is nandroid. I even restored it to make sure it was good to go. I've wiped and now I'm waiting to Synergy-Kingdom to boot. Kind of fell back he love with Sense so I'm going to try that out for awhile.
Yeah. Synergy was solid for me. Was the longest I hung onto a Sense ROM.

I fell in love with SENSE 3.0, but I went back to CM7 because I just needed my HDMwIn and SixAxis app to work.
Having issues with Synergy-Kingdom Nightly. Sense reboots almost non-stop. Going to try Synergy RSL1+Godmod as it seems there is a lot of the Sense 3.0 apps are in there. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far but I'm probably going to end up on MIUI. Going to try this for a week and see how it goes.

horrid battery life.

seriously, what the hell is with this phone? ive tried every rom and kernel and my battery life is terrible. i know what is it. its the lcd using between 60-80% of my battery stats and it never seems to lower. ive already ruled out wake locks or apps causing this. every bell and whistle is disabled, screen brightness is down super low and i have a pure black theme.
any opinions on how to solve this before i look into a different device like the note 2 or lg pro?

ya, whats your average total time on the battery? average screen-on time? if both are alarmingly low, you could fully wipe, return to stock and start over. this may clear up your issue.

its the high lcd usage that concerns me. 65-80% is too much. i already did go to stock and start over. as i said ive tried every tw & aosp rom. my old note 2 never had this issue. as far as screen time it depends, i wouldn't say its super low but i just think its draining to fast. simple things just as texting or making a quick phone call.

Bit paranoid about battery

I like custom roms, but i like battery life even better.
Im now on Omega v3.1 from indie. But i dont know if Custom Roms are better, worse or actually the same in battery life?
I always flash a rom, check it out for about a day, and if im dissapointed i flash another. But last week i heard a thing that if you let the Rom settle for a week or so, the battery life gets better and better?
Can someone help me out a bit Thanks!!!:cyclops:

...I always flash a rom, check it out for about a day, and if im dissapointed i flash another. But last week i heard a thing that if you let the Rom settle for a week or so, the battery life gets better and better?...

never really cared for "settleing" the phone but i have noticed if you keep using the rom/kernel combo for a while battery does get better..however most ppl here dont use roms for long so from my experience the first 2 to 3 full cycles are enough to see how the rom is performing

If you want to have a better battery you need custom kernel

not necessarily.. i have seen ppl get better battery life on stock kernels and also so seen ppl get other get better battery on custom kernels so "better" is always subjective cuz no 2 phones are alike, so everyone will get different results

tried both lean and faux and both worked pretty good on my phone.. i felt lean was giving me a lttler better battery but faux was a little smoother compared to lean.. so i would reccomend you try both adn see which one works better for you :good:

i wouldnt recommend trying tmo kernels on the n9005.. Imoseyon was actually gonna keep both tmo adn n9005 same but then i think he found some difference in the soruce thats why he made a different version for the n9005 and a different version for the n900t
I stick with stock. Does it helps if i use the samsung feature powersaving?

Also don't forget to wipe your battery cache. I've been using the Battery Calibration application from the market to do that. Just follow the instructions from within the app. Requires root.
