Was the turnaround quick enough? - One (M7) General

With 4.3 out now was the wait to long compared to nexus devices? I for one am completely satisfied that it didn't take to long.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium

There was literally a week's turn around. How can anyone be unhappy with that? Fingers crossed that they keep it up. Any indication on if the update came from HTC or Google?

People are unhappy with the turn around on sense based roms. We haven't gotten one of those yet.
Porting aosp with some modifications to a device is relatively easy, especially if it's the manufacturer of the device.

I was very shocked when it dropped on Friday. My wife's Nexus 7 didn't get it until last night.

I was so happy and surprised I decided to convert mine over to GPE rather than wait for sense version updates.

This was the fastest update I have ever received!!
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium

yea can't be mad with a 1 week turn around time on AOSP. I wonder what other changes they will do in the sense 4.3 update other than the 4.3 changes.

This is easily the most positive press HTC has EVER received regarding an update. Google/Samsung/HTC did a great job. Let's hope they keep it up.

Hats off to Google, Samsung and HTC for releasing 4.3 so quickly for these phones.

Very relieved to see the fast update on the gpe.

Does it strike anyone else as surprising that HTC are so keen to update the google edition of their phones, but knowingly take forever to update sense. Or would this be some sort of software agreement with google?

I'm not making excuses for them... But it is way easier to update the vanilla android experience than it is to do the same for sense. They have to build and test sense on top of these updates. They still haven't updated all the unbranded unlocked devices or developer editions running sense.
Add carrier testing on top of that...

ICS for DHD cancelled (permanently this time)

http://blog.htc.com/2012/03/ics/
so we must wait till crisch release his beautiful work
This is exactly the kind of thing that made me switch to a Nexus. HTC is getting seriously annoying and it is almost enough to make me sell my Desire. Well done HTC..
It really sucks too, because I was looking forward to seeing official ICS on the DHD. LC's is absolutely amazing, but without an official release of ICS, a lot of the problems the phone has in regards to ICS will be much more difficult to fix.
Oh well. I'm sure ClockaN will do absolutely amazing without an official update.

I don't think HTC realize the damage they do to themselves when they piss off the geak crowd. The reason that all 4 people in my family have htc phones is because me,the "techy" person, recommended that was a good choice. As soon as they piss off the techy person by doing something like this then they loose a lot more then the immediate customer they loose all the recommended customers as well. Grave mistake HTC.
I just don't get this...
So... a 600 MHz cpu with 512mb ram (desire c) can handle ICS and sense 4, but the Desire HD can't?
Yeah, my next phone will be a nexus one.

Wow, that sucks big time! That easily sounds like the stupidest thing I've seen a company do for a long time. I like HTC as anyone else here but I hope this backlash hurts them big time so they learn they can't just screw over their loyal customers like that.
Hopefully they come to their senses and take it all back like they did last year regarding the desire. Or we could all try and pressurise them into releasing all proprietary hardware drivers etc. But I doubt we'll have any luck with that!

I'm sure this angers the Inspire community as well. I have an Inspire 4G and I know the DHD devs make our phone much more worthwhile!
From what I read at HTC statement in their blog, it is not because DHD can't handle the ICS, but it is because they think our phone is in it greatest performance with latest Gingerbread update with Sense 3.0, so they did not want to spoil this enjoyment just for the sake of newer OS. I think HTC sees this problem from average joe perspective, whom never root or play with their phone, and just click on "Update" button whenever it's popped-up on their phone screen.
" ...ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor."
By the sounds of these posts, the CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE is pretty poor at the moment.

Phones don't suddenly stop working if you don't get some future update...
Also, it saves you money to keep it and nobody has canceled anything yet. We have an official statement saying Q3 for the Atrix's ICS update. We then have lots of speculation based on many things regarding it. So let's at least try to stick with Motorola here until they've actually not delivered on their promise.
I'm hoping there will be a new Nexus phone around the end of this year when I am finally able to upgrade. Otherwise, SGS3.

Exactly right. I've never understood this "ZOMG, no updates, must change phone now!!1!11!! eleventy !!1!11!!" logic from supposedly intelligent people. If your phone is very old, sure, I can see upgrading, but a phone that's not even two years old and has what's currently the most prolific version of Android available (Gingerbread)? A phone that, in many ways, still kicks the crap out of most (not all, but most) phones currently in the market? All because it doesn't have a version of Android that, based on what I've seen, has more than a few significant issues on many devices, issues that have been largely resolved with Jellybean (shades of every-other-Windows-release-is-crap syndrome!)? Unbelievable.
I have a better question: what will there be left to talk/worry about once Moto hits us with ICS? JB?

I hate to be the one to say this, but you know when you go back to the root Atrix 4G section, there's a button on the right hand side that says "Search this forum", and if you select "Show posts" and type in "ZTE" and then press "Enter", you'll get around 4 pages of discussion on this topic?
As for which phone to get, a Nexus, I guess. At least if they make one with an SLCD and external storage/32GB internal... I don't really like the lower life-expectancy of AMOLED screens, and I need at least 25GB of data storage space.

There aren't many changes in 4.3; more minor and back end changes. You'll have some additional support like updating the Bluetooth stack (AVRCP 1.3 finally) and some notification changes as well.

With that said, the HTC bunch on the XDA forums on flagship phones seem to be a crowd that whines and complains quite a bit. It was the same way when I owned my HOX.
Be happy with what you have. At least you have the funds to either spend 650 USD on a phone or have enough money to pay for a cellphone contract. I live in a poor area and I can see what true poverty is. I'm quite happy with the device at large. Reading the butt-hurt pains of the people on this forum is the best form of stand-up comedy in Southeast Asia.

Could you point me to the page in the warranty that states we're entitled to x number of Sense updates?
Thought so.
It has nothing to do with getting the most out of the device (as does anyone); your analogy holds no water because these are phones not assaults (sensationalism); my thought was more along the lines of HTC customers being very vocal in how much they despise the upgrade process / support...but still buy HTC anyway.
If you're on XDA you knew what you were getting into anyway....so just complain about things you can control, not things you can't.

If you buy a mid-range phone and expect more than one major update (in this case, it was ICS to JB), then you're out of your mind. It's not ready, besides before it can be sent out to carrier branded models the carrier adds their bloat and approves the update. Ultimately making those who have carrier models wait longer

I always hear people say this. What does the carrier have to do with it? They don't change anything on the ROM except maybe some connection settings. All they have to do is make sure the new radio firmware still works on their network and approve it.
Or maybe things are done differently in the states. Here in Canada all HTC One's are like the Dev edition. I have never experienced this "carrier bloat"

Yeah US carriers do more extensive testing and stuff with these. I used to do device and update testing at a carrier and because US networks are crap and a hodgepodge of standards and what works in LA without many changes doesn't work as easily in NY without some network adjustments.
Then there is the carrier bloat issue that they want all their garbage on them and then that too has to be tested, etc...
No excuses as they take too long and load too much on devices, just explaining why it takes so long...

So do you think USA will get 4.3 before Europe and Asia? If so would devs change their base or wait?

I definitely believe that areas outside the US will get it first. The only thing I want from AT&T is the firmware. All the software is virtually the same minus the fact our carriers overload it with bloat.
Glad I went S-Off on my Developer Edition and flashed the 3.06 already.
To all those saying "testing" is the reason 4.2.2 is delayed... why is it available for branded phones then? I don't understand why bloated versions have 4.2.2 already while the Developer Edition doesnt? They are essentially the same phone. If "testing" is the reason, why flashing 3.06 to my Developer Edition hasn't given me any problems?

Exactly... base Android 4.2.2 was a fix to a bad release. Its fairly common that although 4.2 brought some of the coolest new features it was buggy as hell and had some deeply ingrained issues. 4.2.1 & 4.2.2 were both bug fixes , with neither fixing the root issues.
I prefer they move to 4.3. For being a new release it is very very solid and a worthy stable release to launch KLP from. Similar to the 2.3.5-7 to 4.0 jump.

Yes. Here in the states these carriers are crazy. Especially Verizon. They're the top US carrier. They add like useless apps to your phone.
The issue is carriers want to make sure that the phone complies with what they want on their network. Their wants are pretty trivial. They're just expressing their power.

The only thing missing is being able to talk to the phone, which would wear off for me after the novelty set in

You could download the nexus 5 image and extract it from that, but I couldn't find it with a quick Google search.

I laughed when I saw "Htc One will get 4.4 in 90 days" in the US. That's just plain not gonna happen. Sprint HTC One just got 4.3 when I left for this Note and At&T. I imagine it will be a while before any phone with a skin (Sense, Touchwiz, etc) gets 4.4.

Yea I think it will happen....

The developer version will get it in 30 days. So the HTC One Max will be the first phablet to be getting 4.4. That sucks. For us anyways.
I'm not trippin to hard. I'm about to flash 4.4 on my lgog

You have the Google launcher installed and are not able to say the hot word on the home screen to launch a search right? That's the state I'm in but the first time I installed it I had the "OK Google now" hot words working and I could search without button pressing. The I got greedy and installed almost everything I could from the dump and it went downhill from there. Had to reinstall stock with root to get back to a clean state and now I Dont have the hot word functionality...boo

What phones? The One? Porting a rom on an S-offed phone does not count as HTC delivering 4.4 with Sense 5.5 in 90 days to all US versions. It will be impressive if it's done, but give their (and every other phone with a skin) track record, I don't see it.
AT&T will probably deliver 4.4 when Google rolls out its next version. Hell phones like the S4 and One just got 4.3 weeks ago I believe. I already have 4.4 running on my Nexus 4 perfectly thanks to the guys here who ported the Nexus 5 Build.
