Hey guys, so i'm about to buy the netgear Miracast/Intel WiDi receiver and i've looked around some reviews and it looks great, i just bought an ultrabook that has WiDi and i have a 25 foot HDMI cable from my TV to my laptop and I sorta wanna get rid of that. So this device looks great, it certainly works as advertised but the guy in the video below says that any rooted samsung device will not work with this. This guy's video dates back to the S3 era, but is this still a problem with the S4?
If it is, is there any ways to bypass the fact that AllShare will not work on rooted device? I'm on Goldeneye rom
Thanks
I don't know about that device. I know there are a couple of threads about it in the apps section (I think or may accessories section), but maybe you have already read them?
Have you ever thought of using a Chromecast instead? If you can find one (they are selling out within 30 minutes of the stores getting them in) you can get one at Best Buys for $35. Best Buys online just says they are not available now (sold out). Amazon sells them but charges over twice the price (up to $100 or more per unit). I have 2 of them on order through the Play Store. Google says I should get them in 2 to 3 weeks again for $35 each.
Any way, you might want to check out Chromecast to see if it does what you want (it should) and it is easier and cheaper to use. Good luck.
If it's an issue, there are apps to hide root. Here's an example of one.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amphoras.hidemyroot&hl=en
I tried Miracast through my AppleTV and it was trash, and unusable. Maybe that Netgear will do though.

I have a chromecast ordered, got it from amazon at 35$. The problem with chromecast is the way it works. It uses the cloud to stream stuff, so lets say if i have a NAS, i cant do anything useful with the chromecast. The netgear box is a little more expensive, but it's a full fledge screen mirroring system. It works pretty well with anything that has miracast or intel's widi. I've seen it in action at my local PC shop and it works great with minimal lag. The reason i want that is i want to stream from my ultrabook to my home theater through my NAS, my Galaxy S 4 also can do the job so thats why i was asking about this

I'm thinking about buying a tablet and dont really buy into the whole apple thing, so I was wondering if the Archos 101 2.2 16gb was a good product.
What do you guys think. How does it stand on its own and against others like the iPad and the Samsung for example.
Many thanks
I recommend if you can wait for Motorola XOOM. The better choice with Honeycomb already.
Well... they're slightly different.
The archos can do things the ipad can't, like playing most types of video files, connect to TV via HDMI, connect NTFS HDD via USB to it.
It can't do 3G natively, but you can tether to your mobile if you need to browse away from home/WiFi.
So the Archos does most things the iPad can and then many more..., but it can't do the things the iPad can do quite as well. Not badly, just not quite as suave, if you get my gist.
The ipad is smoother to use, the screen is better, but then it costs almost double the money of the Archos.
So from where I stand, I prefer the Archos for it's flexibility and price wise, I'd rather have 2 Archos than 1 iPad.
The xoom looks good, especially with A3.0....
Is the Archos flashable to 3.0 or will it only run on 2.2?
I do think at half the price the Archos is good value for money, especially if you think about where the amrket is right now.....
choices, choices....
Xoom looks nice indeed, but with dual core, more RAM, etc... it'll cost you what the iPad costs.
Am I correct in that the archos has an ARM Cortex A8 at 1 GHz with DSP? I can't seem to find out how much RAM it has. It doesnt seem to say on their site. Has anyone had any experience of successfully overclocking this processor and to what stable speeds?
Check this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897877
there will be much better tablets available in the next few months, but right now
I think the 101 is the best value for money 10" android tablet you can buy.
I have had mine since dec 16th and cant fault it. (the screen isnt brilliant when it comes to viewing angles, but is crisp and bright).
The battery lasts me 2 days on moderate use.
It connects easily to my wifi and can see all my networked media via upnp.
I can output to a tv or monitor by hdmi.
I can play every format of video file I have.
It runs smoothly and without crashes now that I have the latest firmware and Zeam launcher.
It uses the wifi hotspot from my HTC Desire.
I can use a Wii remote to control emulator games on it.
I can read comics and ebooks easily.
I can use a wireless keyboard and mouse.
I think the 101 is great value for money, It may never see android 3.0, but it can do so much right now that that isnt a problem to me.
I'd say get one, you wont regret it.
Where is the primary source for apps - is it Android Market or do you have to go through Archos. If its Archose does it have a good choice?
Is the screen scratch proof or do you need to install screen protectors. If the latter I assume it comes with one in the box?

ad 1.: Screen is quite sturdy but prone to Finger Prints and if you need a Mirror, well, there you are . For these two Reasons alone a non-glare Screen Protector greatly improves the Value of the Archos and I won't ever have a Tablet without it. And no: It's not included out of the Box. If it were I'd expect Archos to apply it first hand.
Viewing Angles improve too, from my Experience.
ad 2.: Out of the Box it's Archos own Applib Store, which fills up every Minute, but not necessarely the Apps you need and if so, mostly older Versions of them. Google Apps are missing too.
For this, some clever Developer packed an Archive and some notes how to install Google Apps including Android Market. This is by far the first Thing you should do after powering on your Device for the first Time. Root is not required for this.

What's the best place to get one of these in the UK. I've look at getting one from the US were it seems cheaper but the import costs and duty carges kill it of course.
Cheers
I found bestbuyuk very fast and helpful. £310 delivered in less than a week.
dont use simplyelectronics though, they lied to me about stock levels, kept me waiting 3 weeks, took payment from my credit card on the 2nd day and took over a month to refund me when I cancelled the order!

Thank you for that... I had seen Simplyelectronics and was contemplating an order. How do we stand for online orders in terms of cancelling unfulled orders and getting our money returned. Do the credit card companies help you with this one? I'll defnitely check out bestbyuk - many thanks.
Does anyone know if the 101 wil be compatible with A3.0 and if so will Archos be releasing for the 101?

I had used simplyelectronics also, VERY bad experience. took two weeks to send and they also lied about stock levels to me too :/ customer service was no help either.
I had to involve my credit card protection service in the end before simplyelectronics refunded my money.
I am going to order mine today - not from simplyelectronics !!!

So the OG Gtv, Logitech Revue just dropped to $99 today. Anybody picking one up? Anyone already have one? At $99 I think it's worth picking up just to play around with and I plan on getting one sometime this week.
If you have one, please let me know what you think about it. Also, are there any good forums for it? None on XDA obviously bc it's not mobile, but surely there's something decent out there.
I picked one up yesterday. I am still not sure how much I like it yet. But at 99, it is a great price just to play around with. Some of the features are pretty cool, the PIP is really nice. It took a while to setup but didn't take to long to figure out how to work it. I am still looking for forums and sites with good info on it.
I would say if you are the tinker type, for 99 bucks you should pick it up.
Thinking of getting one myself. Found a forum that said XDA had a section for it (which I dont see) and someone even mentioned it being rooted. If this is true, its a no brainer and Im running to get one now. Either way though, its supposed to be updated to Android 3.1 by September.
Android forums has a section on google TV: http://androidforums.com/google-tv/
I think I'm gonna get one, looks like it's a decent value for $100
I ordered mine yesterday. Reviews are strong enough overall that for $99 it seemed like a good bet.
Yeah, it has been rooted, but unfortunately, it requires some hardware mods. A bit difficult on the rooting, but probably still fun to play with. It's also due for a gingerbread update soon. I'll check out the forums, probably pick one up soon. I wonder if it has the market, without being rooted?
3.1 Beta has LEAKED!!! http://www.androidcentral.com/honeycomb-beta-logitech-revue-leaked
There's some pretty good info to be found over at the SatelliteGuys forum. Dish Network is somehow partnered up in this unit (I install for Dish as a subcontractor). Actually, it fully integrates ONLY with certain Dish Network DVR receivers. It'll work with most anything out there but if you have the right Dish receiver and are willing to cough up another $4 to a Dish each month, you get some extra bells and whistles that you don't get with any other provider (like DirecTV, the cable company, etc)... at least out of the box that is.
It's a pretty nice unit and it gets better with each update. I've played around with them some and overall I like it, but it's definitely a niche item. We sell that at our office (at least I've seen them in the warehouse). For $99, I think I'll pick one up myself. My wife will just love another toy hooked up to the tv (rolling eyes with an evil grin)!
EDIT - meant to post the link below to the SatelliteGuys forum. The guy starting off the review many months back always has the best and most accurate info. Great guy. There's like 450 posts to wade thru. Like here, the most up to date stuff is at the end. And, just like the Epic, some people love it and others...not so much!
Give thanks if I've helped u in any way...

Ordered one just now. XDA definitely needs a forum for this one.

gtvhacker.com is where you will find all the info you need on the this
noice, i may get one of these depending on my paycheck
Ordered one from Amazon, but it won't be here for ~2 weeks
Big, huge warning -- if you're going to root it, you have to do it before powering it up for the first time and allowing it to update. You'll also need a TTL (possibly 3.3v and NOT 5v, which might be a bit harder to pull off without additional level conversion... most of the cheap USB-TTL uart bridges I've seen are 5v i/o) serial port adapter, and willingness to open up and solder wires to your brand new Revue & spend an hour or two working on it before you ever get to play with it for the first time. That said, if you DON'T root it, you won't be able to do anything with it besides be a content-consumer -- there's no market yet, and the only way to push your own APK files to it is if it's rooted. Sigh. And Logitech dares to wonder why they didn't sell many prior to the price drop. If they were both freely rootable & reflashable out of the box, and equally easy to restore to factory-virgin firmware, they probably would have sold way more, if only because there would be six dozen apps by now to spoof browser ids to get past provider blocks and play ISO files straight from a networked hard drive ;-)
hopefully someone can pre-root the 3.1 update once its official
The logitech website says its 249.99 but in check out its 99 and they offrerd me free second day shipping

I just ordered it from the logitech website for $99 and free 2 day shipping. I can't pass on that deal.
I also find it funny that you can buy a replacement keyboard identical to the one that ships with the revue for $99.

I finally saw a N10 at my local WalMart. I live in Newport, RI and it arrived there two days ago. I know this because they called me to let me know it arrived. I went out on "opening day" to 4 walmart's in my area trying to buy one, and left my name and number at each one, obviously I didn't get one that day there. I was able to order one when it live instead, thankfully. The associate from Walmart was nice to remember to call me to let me know it was in. I asked him how many he had and he said two. So it looks like Walmart will probably have at least one shipment for Christmas. So if anyone doesn't want to wait any longer for Google Play, I suggest calling your local or running down and checking it out. I advise doing the latter since they may say they have it and don't. People tend to think you are asking about the 7. Even though you clearly say 10. Just my experience.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
I had called my local Walmart (Sacramento, CA) to find out if they had any Nexus 10s, and they had 2 32gb models, so I went and picked one up. I like it, but I might have to take it back because it isn't very good at streaming mkv files from a network share.

Sorry to hear that. Did you end up returning the N10?
Staples?
Picked mine up (for a christmas gift) at Staples instead of Wal-Mart. they haven't run out of stock yet so i guess Staples either has a lot of tablets or nobody really considers Staples as a place to get tablets. That and the fact that I'm your northern brothers and the N10 didn't get a lot of hype here
You know you can check Walmart stock on their website?
Easiest way I found was to click the check other stores in your location under the ship to store option when looking at the N10. Anything that says it will be ready for pickup "today" then they most likely have it in stock at the store.
That's how I picked up mine, did the ship to store option at a location that said available today, got a notification that it was ready for pick up within the hour.

Are you using the VLC beta app (it's in another Nexus 10 thread somewhere)? So far it's the only one I've found that fully supports the audio codecs that most mkv's use. I have no trouble streaming from my brother's network share.

Sorry I'm not doing anything like that. Just between my home devices. And using mxplayer. No network sharing.
My friend just alerted to me to one that came in to her goodwill, brand new, for $15.
Is it worth it?
The reviews seemed like it was a moot point for the price.
I also DO have a chromecast already, but that's just for living room use. I'd probably keep the q in my room.
So is it worth it for just $15 or not really?

Depends on what you want to do with it...
I have mine set up with CM10.2 and plex installed. Then I can send anything to it from my phone/tablet. I also have a wireless keyboard to control it when I need to.
It's set up in my workshop with a small set of speakers and is perfect for listening to music and controlling it remotely.
You can just thought it as a Galaxy Nexus without screen, and IMO it also worth $15 for a aluminum paper weight.
For fifteen bucks? Hell yeah. Just be prepared to load cyanogen onto a faceless device. I embed up using side load and it was easy. If you put cheap cast onto it then it gets recognized as a chrome cast target. If you don't like it leery me know. I'll pay for shipping
I'm looking into purchasing two nexus players so I can play games on both of them and play multiplayer with them, but is there still a great user base where if I were to buy these devices, would the support cease shortly or have a great longevity?
It's not even been out for a year. And now it's getting it's first really big OS update.
So I'd think that the user base is currently increasing. Despite some people who might switch to the Shield TV if they are into gaming.
I think shield is a better choice if you're into gaming, although casual games works great
Thanks for letting me know, I went ahead and bought the last two at my local store so I thank you for the advice, and among gaming I use my Xbox for that too low I just enjoy a bit of android gaming here too
Hopefully you bought them at $49 each... On sale at BestBuy & Walmart.

can't believe you can get it for all almost the same price as a Chromecast in those places.
btw the joypad didn't come cheap either.
Same here. And now I get to watch the damn thing bootloop.
Sigh... guess I'll wipe my cache again.
