Hi guys, I am pretty sure, I am not the only one, that would want this feature on their Nexus4.
I am currently using the Dash clock widget on my lockscreen, but to be honest a simple minimal notification screen would be much more convenient.

Thats the thing, its not daydream, it triggers when you pick up the device, and it shows you the time and notifications.
I know it won't look as good on non Amoled screens, but still.
http://youtu.be/lbGmfk8yaZU?t=2m25s <- You can see how it works here (it's the only video i can find right now)
This will drain your battery. The Moto X has an AMOLED screen which means that each pixel produces it's own light and can be turned on/off independently of the rest.
The Nexus 4 has a LCD screen. LCD screens have one large backlight. Each pixel is actually a shutter that opens and closes letting light through or not. Even if one pixel needs to be illuminated then the whole backlight has to turn on. this uses WAY more battery than an AMOLED which only has to turn on that single pixel.
Just saw the video. I wanna try this as-well .

Its only going to drain your battery as much as a normal lock screen would. Good logic. Battery drain depends on brightness on the nexus.

With the Moto X the screen turns on when you get a notification. NBD on the Moto X because you're only turning on a few pixels, it's not using that much power. If this happened on the N4 then it would be a problem because you're turning on the whole screen which would suck power down very quickly.

It would drain more battery. His logic makes complete sense. As of right now, we have a notification light that lets us know about pending notifications, this example here is what the moto X has in exchange.
In his description of how each screen works, the notification and time on the moto x would use significantly less battery than that on the nexus 4 because the N4 would have the entire screen on, while the moto x (while displaying the notifications) would only light up the pixels necessary to show us the notifications.

I'm sure there's an option to turn it on when you want to, with the powerbutton. Traditional lock style. Still leaving the notification light active on the n4.

Yeah the instant on thing would be a total battery killer. I would still like the lockscreen just without that though. I really like the look, simple yet capable.

Today I compared two Moto G (mine with german KK, the other one from my mother with 4.3). Surprise: minimum/maximum brightness is higher in KK. This means that SOC time will be reduced at the end of the day for most users... Can't complain though, if I got 6 SOT on 4.3 now I get around 5h on KK, which now makes sense because I didn't understand what happened.
It's just to see if anyone else noticed it as well, as it's easy to see.

is this also the case for automatic brightness? and does the brightness slider work together with automatic brightness, or are they separate options like in 4.3? thanks

Automatic brightness is also higher, yes. With respect to 2nd question, it's like in 4.3, you choose whether to use automatic brightness or choose the level of brightness you want:

Correct me if I'm wrong
But
1) On Moto G Kit kat makes the screen brighter > This means the screen is brighter > This will cause battery life OVERALL to fall... right? compared to 4.3 jelly bean
I find the screen brightness perfect for my needs right now at 4.3
Ummm
This is one area where the iPhone definitely wins.
Give users the ability to control the overall level of auto brightness.
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
That explains some things...
Can anyone check in 4.3 if the power consumption of the screen at the lowest brightness level is lower or the same?
Which app is that, let me know and I will test.
Bear in mind though that to really test you would need to use the same phone on 4.3 them upgrade it to 4.4. The reason is that each phone could possibly have it's screen calibrated slightly differently , ie maybe the OP's two phones would have different brightness even if both running the same android version.
However I do appreciate there is a (perceived) difference in screen time in the for the OP. But maybe its something else other than the screen in kitkat that is draining the battery quicker.

It's called PowerTutor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.umich.PowerTutor&hl=es
I get same results on 4.3, ie its showing figure of 300.
But I don't trust the results. If I switch to auto brightness the graph still keeps churning out the same figures even though my screen brightens. Same if I use full brightness then switch to auto - new stats keep saying the same figure as on full.

In GravityBox you can assign a new auto-brightness level.

I have the same impression with my girlfriend phone, but it isnt because the KitKat! Its hardware.
There are some units that the screen looks more pinkish (you can see when is turn off) and there others with a blueish screen.
The fist one has lower brightness, you can see in white pages.
There are probably different screens in different batches of the phone.
I find the screen too bright with auto mode on both JB and KK. I have been using lux (with default settings) for a few weeks now and it's great.

I can't believe I have fricking burn-in on my screen! I have had the phone less than two weeks and have been loving it but last night noticed lines on the screen. They look to line up exactly with the thread topics list on the Tapatalk app.
I have been using the app a lot but there is no way I should have burn in happening. It's not like I have even left the screen sitting in one place when using the app. My hypothesis is that it might have happened from using the ultra brightness mode (adapt display with maximum brightness on with auto brightness turned on) in bright sunshine and using the Tapatalk app.
I have googled burn in for this screen and haven't seen anything so I wonder if I somehow have a bad screen. It did look great when I first got it. If anyone out there has heard anything about this or can check their screen on a dark grey background I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Got a new phone and the screen is actually a little worse than the original. Has the same white lines across screen when the brightness is turned down in a dark room with a dark grey or similar color on screen. Sent the replacement back and am going to keep the first one. The lines are actually not that easy to see during normal usage and I really like the phone.

Yeah I have had an s2, galaxy nexus and s3 before this and have noticed some screen uniformity issues before. Never had seen the distinctive thin lines like I see on the two s5's I have examined. I was hoping to have just got a lemon but now that I have seen another new one that actually looked a little worse it has actually eased my mind a bit even though my OCD wants everything perfect.

Know the feeling. It freaks me out every time I use Tapatalk.
They also show up when you use a paint app and fill the screen with +-80% brightness with the screen brightness below 30%
However, they disappear when you turn the brightness of the screen up, (and compensate the black to 80% again) so it's just a bit of an error in the led calibration.
The area below the notification bar also has it when you run the colour tests after dialing *#0*#.
It's more predominantly visible on the S5 and Note 3 because those screens have the highest contrast ratio.
I'm horribly OCD over my devices too. There's a 0.5mm distance-to-screen difference between the edges of my screen protector... It bothers me every single day! >.<

Funny you should say that I just got one of those tempered glass screen protectors and was amazed that I got it on without any dust or air bubbles. Unfortunately it is also off a fraction to one side and also doesn't quite line up perfectly around the home key. I am so tempted to try to fix it every day but I know I should just leave it alone. ?

I was so excited to get the 2014 Moto X and I was going to order it through MotoMaker but the wait was absolutely ridiculous. So I went to a local Verizon store and purchased the black 16GB version. I was VERY happy with this device, however with all the news about the DROID Turbo....how could I not return it and wait for that instead? So that's what I did..anyone else do that or consider doing that?
Screen defect of excessive color shifts when tilting our screen. Basically when showing a page white background (like gmail or google's search page), the screen would appear yellow tinted when looking straight, and appear blue tinted when tilted to any direction for a few degrees. It is more obvious under full brightness and it will look like a yellow/orange blob appearing and disappearing as you tilt the screen.
Yeah, I returned my MotoMaker version. Didn't like the colour. But bought a black one off Amazon.
Not convinced it's worth £200 over a Nexus 5 though.

Yeah I can see it now. I can live with that though as long as I know my device isn't faulty. Thanks for the fast reply.
Well I'm not returning it but selling it, the main reason is because the Nexus 6 have better hardware with some of the same features of the X. I'm interested in the better camera, dual speakers, higher res screen and much bigger battery. I'm disappointed the Moto X didn't get some of these things. I'd probably be content with my Moto X if the Nexus 6 didn't exist or had better hardware.
I can't deal with large phones, so I bought a used Moto X for $165. I'm not sure if I can use the N6 as the daily driver due to the size.

Couple things I have noticed so far r that the keyboard theams r not all there. The halo blue and white I think r just the same black keyboard. Also there is no face recognition for the lock screen. There is Jo option for it at all. I know I saw a video review stating that it worked in the background of the lock screen.

Glad we could help and enjoy learning about 5.0 that is the fun part!
It looks dimmer because it is a warmer screen and more color accurate. GS3 (and most other phones not just AMOLED) have their calibration cooler to make the screen look more vibrant, and the GS3 has bigger blue pixels which also makes the screen bluer. Samsung also oversaturates far more and the touchwiz UI and wallpapers are naturally very contrasty. All reasons for the Nexus 6 screen to look dimmer. I believe the brightness is about the same as a GS3 if you actually measured them.

Sweet, I didn't even think about the LED notification light until I saw this thread.
Nice. I missed that some how. So happy for this. I hate not having notification light.
now the question is.....where the hell on the phone is the led?? and does RGB mean it only get those 3 colors??
It means all colors but from what I understand, it won't be used for notification by the stock system. Apps like light flow would be required.

Left of the top speaker from what Artem says on AndroidPolice. And I think RGB means all the colours and it working same way as the nexus 4 and 5.

Could you please elaborate on this? Will I need an extra app to make the LED flash green whenever I receive an email in Aqua Mail, or get a message on Facebook Messenger?

Some apps will have the option to notify using the LED such as whatsapp.
Others may not. Which is where LightFlow comes into it's own.
