So far loving this thing. Really fast compared to my g3. The screen is definitely different, dimmer or just more subdued. The build IMO is very nice. Doesn't feel near as big or heavy as I thought it was going to.
Couple things I have noticed so far r that the keyboard theams r not all there. The halo blue and white I think r just the same black keyboard. Also there is no face recognition for the lock screen. There is Jo option for it at all. I know I saw a video review stating that it worked in the background of the lock screen.

I believe you have to first enable a pin or password security in order to have the face unlock option available. That was the case on my Nexus 7.
on my nexus 5 its under security..... smart lock....then "trusted face"

It has face unlock mine works fine. It does work in the background, watch the small icon in center at the bottom when you go to unlock it. You have to choose something other than "swipe" for "smartlock" to appear (or not greyed out)
The keyboard themes are all there for me just tried to make sure. They don't change till you back out of the settings so maybe that is what you are seeing?
Well u all r right. Got the face unlock to work and it is very unobtrusive. I like that a lot. As for the keyboard I didn't notice the actual letters and numbers changed color while the overall theme stayed the same. Always a lot to learn with a new OS. Thanks for the help guys

Glad we could help and enjoy learning about 5.0 that is the fun part!
It looks dimmer because it is a warmer screen and more color accurate. GS3 (and most other phones not just AMOLED) have their calibration cooler to make the screen look more vibrant, and the GS3 has bigger blue pixels which also makes the screen bluer. Samsung also oversaturates far more and the touchwiz UI and wallpapers are naturally very contrasty. All reasons for the Nexus 6 screen to look dimmer. I believe the brightness is about the same as a GS3 if you actually measured them.

U r definitely right there. The g3 was just made to pop I think. Much like the Samsung's. Its definitely not a complaint,it just isn't what I'm used to. After figuring out the first two problems I really can't find a complaint. Other then I'm missing my ir blaster. Guess I will HAVE to find that missing remote now.

I can't really choose between the three. Although, the "white" on the Samsung seems better. Not sure why, but my One X seems a bit reddish.
Wow, Note is bigger than I first thought. Could I trouble you to do a picture of all of them with the same wallpaper as the One X? Mainly as a comparison between SAMOLED and SLCD, or whatever the One X has. You don't have to, but it would be nice. Thanks.
*EDIT* Either the One X wallpaper or the Notes wallpaper.

Well I guess I'll have to settle for the Incredible. Wish I could have One X on Verizon.
The S III screen is so dim and has so many problems. Its color is awful. Most of all it's just plain dim. Half the brightness of a One X. No contest there, that is an objective fact. Then there are the tints, ink marks, the Pentile jaggedness, ugh. And the BURN IN that comes later. A nightmare. I really, really wanted to get an S III but I can't see myself straining to look at it outside or deal with ink marks.
I wish S III had the One X screen. Oh man, I wish.
To hold on to my data I will have to have a puny little Incredible. I also hate Sense already and the stupid multitasking button. Settings button would be so much nicer, with long hold on home for multitask.
Are there any other good S4 phones with LCD from VZ? I started looking at the Rezound, but it just seems like such an old phone...but since it's so cheap maybe I'll grab the Rezound and then wait for another phone next year to get off contract.

I've been using sammys samoled screens for years now and have yet to incur any burn in.
Edit: note burn in is definitely possible and I could see this being a factor in your choice, just saying it hasn't been a problem for me. Even with gps use and obviously the screen is on for extensive periods of time, no burn. Although I have heard others, specifically those using gps regularly getting burn in.
Edit2: I do love the one x screen though, traded my girl the one x for her SGSIII and I'm still in awe of the screen.

Hi!
It does appear that the HTC One X seems a tad reddish. I had the HTC One S phone (returned it for the SG3) and found the screen to be fairly bright and the whites looked really white. Would you say that is the case for the SG3 phone that is shown in your photograph? By the way, that is a great photograph you took of all three phones side by side!
Anyone else have this? Like really washed out text.
Are you using the app from the play store? Or the browser? There's different skins for both. Also there's the tapatalk app, which the xda app is based on.
But XDA has a free app.

I love the design of this device... it was to be almost perfect for me. However the screen sucks. Its washed out and text is not any clearer than my wife's nook. I'm thinking mine is a defective one. It has minor light bleed but more or less flush screen. No creaking... the left has a little more give but good otherwise. My USB port clicks firmly but it has some wobble. The device itself stutters a lot, even after a data reset. My biggest problem is that the screen becomes utterly unresponsive after a few minutes of use. I sent an email rather than call. If i don't get an RMA in a couple days I'll call in as well. I'm very disappointed. Want to love this device but I can't.

Yes, washed out text on my ASUS Infinity tf700! The only site that is like this is xda
The text is nice and clear when i logout though. I hope the site coders will fix.
in the browser, change the xda theme to xda 2010(bottom left) and itll solve the washed out look on your nexus 7.
The Nexus 7 display is calibrated very bad...
Especially greens and whites are washed out and white-saturation is very bad too!
So N7 canĀ“t display different white and grey nuances - they look all white or washed out.
I think google/asus will never fix it...
This has nothing to do with the calibration of the N7 screen. It's because the 2013 theme doesn't "play nice" with mobile browsers. If you choose the Classic or 2010 theme at the bottom left of the screen it will work fine.
Can you post a screenshot? I'm curious if it will show up in there. If it is just in how the Nexus 7 renders the site, there isn't much to do about that. As others have said, you can either choose another theme (lower left-hand corner) or use the XDA app.

JavaScript related.. if you remove javascript in the browser settings than it works fine. but then the quick links pull downs dont work and things cease to function correctly. I contacted simms about the same thing the OP is talking about and that was the only other solution than going back to the horrid 2010 theme.
That same thing happen to me after I installed the eclipse logo in my signature. I had to ditch the logo to get the screen back to normal.
I had this foggy look when I browsed XDA on Dolphin Browser too, I assumed it was done so XDA could discourage us from browsing and to use their app instead.
I have a Nexus 7 thinking about a Nexus 4. Do you loose about .3" of display diagonal because of lower 3 key area like you do on the N7? So the 4.7" display is really only 4.4" usable? I also thinking about a Note II, you get a full 5.5".
The Nexus 4 is fine. The screen is rather large. It's quite the same size as the GS3.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I think most of us ditch the navbar at the earliest opportunity and claim the full 4.7" back.
Then use 'pie' controls of some sort or 'button saviour', where you slide you finger/thumb from your chosen area of screen to bring up navigation controls... even though i explained it badly it works well.
I just placed an order for the nexus 4 and I kinda had the same concern. I get what you mean by sliding from the edge of the screen to bring up nav menu. Could you please provide some links to help me look into it more?
Thanks

its a weird trend. i mean who cares really. youre loosing a couple of pixels so what. android is programmed to take them away anyway when needed, the bar will change position, make way or disappear completely when needed. its flexible. whats more important, its made for fast mavigation, it feels natural the way it is and google had that in mind for sure.
i've always felt that navigation on hardware crippled phones feels awkward, its like out of place. buttons are not placed where you can reach them, they're hidden away to make way for a monstrous display and that will diminish your experience. software buttons give you both, large screen when needed and fast, integrated navigation that is part of the whole.
ps.
as for your n7, theres so many options. gesture based, pie, or androids native UI's. i run my n7 in phone UI for instance which does wonders. the bar will nicely cling to the side in landscape orientation. if you use tabUI the space that you loose is minimal, the same actually as with a hardwarebutton device - one unified bar. its available for phones as well and works just as well
Moles is right. As cool as pie controls are, I prefer googles on screen implementation for general usage because its fast, responsive and convenient.
However it is nice to have the full 4.7 inches while using certain apps like games, readers, gallery etc. Flash a ROM that supports expandable desktop like PA and you can customize the screen real estate per app, to your liking.

I can't believe I have fricking burn-in on my screen! I have had the phone less than two weeks and have been loving it but last night noticed lines on the screen. They look to line up exactly with the thread topics list on the Tapatalk app.
I have been using the app a lot but there is no way I should have burn in happening. It's not like I have even left the screen sitting in one place when using the app. My hypothesis is that it might have happened from using the ultra brightness mode (adapt display with maximum brightness on with auto brightness turned on) in bright sunshine and using the Tapatalk app.
I have googled burn in for this screen and haven't seen anything so I wonder if I somehow have a bad screen. It did look great when I first got it. If anyone out there has heard anything about this or can check their screen on a dark grey background I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Has the same white lines across screen when the brightness is turned down in a dark room with a dark grey or similar color on screen. Sent the replacement back and am going to keep the first one. The lines are actually not that easy to see during normal usage and I really like the phone.

Yeah I have had an s2, galaxy nexus and s3 before this and have noticed some screen uniformity issues before. Never had seen the distinctive thin lines like I see on the two s5's I have examined. Know the feeling. It freaks me out every time I use Tapatalk.
They also show up when you use a paint app and fill the screen with +-80% brightness with the screen brightness below 30%
However, they disappear when you turn the brightness of the screen up, (and compensate the black to 80% again) so it's just a bit of an error in the led calibration.
The area below the notification bar also has it when you run the colour tests after dialing *#0*#.
It's more predominantly visible on the S5 and Note 3 because those screens have the highest contrast ratio.
I'm horribly OCD over my devices too. There's a 0.5mm distance-to-screen difference between the edges of my screen protector... It bothers me every single day! >.<

Funny you should say that I just got one of those tempered glass screen protectors and was amazed that I got it on without any dust or air bubbles. Unfortunately it is also off a fraction to one side and also doesn't quite line up perfectly around the home key. I am so tempted to try to fix it every day but I know I should just leave it alone. ?

Samsung and Apple both have the best screens on mobile products. The LG G3's (QHD 2560x1440) screen is amazing but it uses IPS LCD screen while the Galaxy note 4 uses SuperAMOLED 2D screen.
I agree I had g3 and fixed my self to like it this screen blows it out the water

To be fair, the colors on Samsung devices (by default) are vivid, but not accurate. Not sure how accurate the G3 is, but Apple screens are generally quite a bit more accurate than Samsung screens.
From what I've read the Note 4 has the option to use vivid or accurate color rendering, the accurate is at least as good as the iPhone 6 (plus the option to have the colors really pop.)
im excited to see screen today!!! g3 has good screen i think (thats about it imo though but good screen) so we will see!

Anandtech, Displaymate and others state the color coverage is the best of any device. Depends on the setting. Vivid is still an option.
i do love this screen, but i very slightly see what some people said about the upper right hand portion of the screen having more of a reddish hue than the rest. mine has that, but it's pretty slight and only noticable on white screens like in the menus, so i don't care much. everything else about the phone works perfectly so i'm happy!

Oh wow! I love it. It looks awesome on the Note 4. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. :good: :good:
There appears to be some G3 owners in denial that their power hogging, low contrast displayed device is better and the N4 is a laggy while the G3 is super fast. This in contradiction of most reviews and my own experience.
G3 is a good device, but the display is a more than usual resource killer.
