Did you return your Moto X? Why? - X 2014 General

I was so excited to get the 2014 Moto X and I was going to order it through MotoMaker but the wait was absolutely ridiculous. So I went to a local Verizon store and purchased the black 16GB version. I was VERY happy with this device, however with all the news about the DROID Turbo....how could I not return it and wait for that instead? So that's what I did..anyone else do that or consider doing that?

Screen defect of excessive color shifts when tilting our screen. Basically when showing a page white background (like gmail or google's search page), the screen would appear yellow tinted when looking straight, and appear blue tinted when tilted to any direction for a few degrees. It is more obvious under full brightness and it will look like a yellow/orange blob appearing and disappearing as you tilt the screen.

Yeah, I returned my MotoMaker version. Didn't like the colour. But bought a black one off Amazon.
Not convinced it's worth £200 over a Nexus 5 though.

I never noticed that issue with mine. However, I have heard this is a common issue.

Huh. I didn't notice this about my phone until I read this post. Is this a manufacturing defect that I should exchange the phone for?

Does this issue usually show straight away as soon as you switch the device on, or is it something that can develop at any time? My Moto X 2014 only arrived today and I love it, the screen looks fine but now I'm worried that I'm going like this device the more I use it and then suffer this screen issue. How common is it?

Yeah I can see it now. I can live with that though as long as I know my device isn't faulty. Thanks for the fast reply.

Well I'm not returning it but selling it, the main reason is because the Nexus 6 have better hardware with some of the same features of the X. I'm interested in the better camera, dual speakers, higher res screen and much bigger battery. I'm disappointed the Moto X didn't get some of these things. I'd probably be content with my Moto X if the Nexus 6 didn't exist or had better hardware.
I can't deal with large phones, so I bought a used Moto X for $165. I'm not sure if I can use the N6 as the daily driver due to the size.

Temp fix is to download screen adjuster and have it run on boot. Then set blue to 15 and disable the notification. Its like it never happened haha.

The color shift happens to most phones. The screen adjuster for the most part fixes the yellow.

Great solution! It really helps to remove the orange/yellow look and makes everything more natural. I find 15 a bit too cold for my taste but 10 works really well.

Blotches on an all black screen? Test yours here

Can you guys with cameras that have manual control test something for me?
Following on from a post by someone else about weird blotches on an all black image displayed on the screen, I checked mine today in pitch darkness and noticed a faint 2 inch or so of blackness on one edge of the screen along with smaller blotches. It doesn't appear to be as visible as the other poster's though but I exaggerated in in the photo so it's easier to see and settings posted below for people to check as well.
This is only visible on an all black screen. This does not exist on any of the S2's I've owned. I'll check my dad's S3 tonight when I go see him in the same way but the way to photograph it to keep the results consistent are as follows:
Stick camera and phone in a cupboard and...
Phone screen brightness: 50%
Camera ISO: 200
Camera Shutter: 15 seconds
Camera Aperture: f/4.5
Remember to pre-focus and use the 10sec timer to avoid shake
Those settings will over exaggerate the effect as shown in my photo below but it makes it easier for everyone to see as you do have to focus your eyes in reality and it's not immediately obvious unless you're in pitch darkness and looking at an all black screen.
I don't know how I feel about this though but if it's visible using the above camera settings for lots of people then I'll leave it as is.
Again, it's only visible on an all black screen so make sure your image that you load is all black and not grey or something Make sure screen timeout is set to at least a minute to avoid the screen going off!

What free app? It's a black image with screen timeout extended. The rest is your camera settings to be able to fairly photograph the screen for everyone to compare, an app can't do that

I didn't see those nope! Thanks for the links. Seems strange though as the white S3 belonging to my dad has none of the blotches, neither does a pebble blue on another forum. My 2 S2 handsets had no issues either.
Oh well!
My first phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 20sec)
Second phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 30sec)
The guy at the store (**** Smith in Australia) was unable to reproduce the issue in-store, so swapped the phone out and said I'd have to go to samsung if I reported the same issue again. The 2nd phone still has the issue, but as you can see, nowhere near as bad... still... not very good is it.
My 2 year SGS1 had about 4 spots - never noticed any issue. The first SGS3 was definitely noticeable just scrolling through system menus at night.
That's rather bad^^ I've emailed mobiflefun with picture so let's see what they say.
Suggest you up your exposure (duration and/or ISO) to make it a bit more noticeable. Looks like you've got a fair amount of guff in the top-left corner.
:/ dodgy manufacturing.
I don't have an SGSIII yet, but I noticed pretty much this same thing on my Galaxy Note. One night I was viewing an image with an all black screen and it had these weird blotches on the screen. I had never noticed them before.

This "issue" is known since the SGS1. Is the leakege from the AMOLED display. One thing to consider i only have a line about half a CM in the same place where you have the circle mark. Maybe a manufacture failure?
quicker way to test.
1 - dark room
2 set auto brightness off and screen to lowest brightness.
go to phone and dial *#0*#
click vibrate test which will display black screen.
and then check....
p.s been through this in other threads here but mky local telco had 26 with this issue went to another telco and got a blue one today - and no issue whatsoever...

[General] Dead/Stuck Pixel Problems

I. Dead Pixels
Dead Pixels are pixels that are damaged and do not display a color. These are clearly visible when white is being displayed since they are black dots. Dead Pixels cannot be fixed.
Regarding Dead Pixels. I would appreciate if you guys could submit to this survey I have going on. Thanks
http://gopollgo.com/does-your-nexus-4-have-dead-pixels
II. Stuck Pixels
Stuck Pixels are pixels that are "stuck" on one color subpixel: Red, Green, or Blue. Typically, a stuck pixel is a bit obvious when white is being displayed, but there is an app that tests for stuck pixels here. (Although the app says Dead Pixels, a dead pixel is often confused with a Stuck Pixel).
If you have confirmed that you do indeed have a stuck pixel, then you should run this video on your phone for awhile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62d17RtgVU8
Sometimes, pressing on the area of the pixel helps to "unstuck" it.

Definitely get that replaced.
Holy crap, that's awful! Mine has light bleed at the top. It's faint but visible on black screens when the status indicators (time, 3G/4G icon, etc) aren't blocking it. Replacement had worse light bleed (3 spots instead of 1) and a yellower screen. If my next replacement is worse, I think I might just keep the original. Waiting months to get a pristine device is wearing on me. Other than that, phone seems to be find.
This is what I get to look at, it seems to be software related since it also comes through on a screen shot, but a factory reset didn't really fix anything. Sometimes they go away, sometimes different ones light up, its quite strange.
The picture is quite small, but you can see a bunch of lit up pixels near the green line in the background, my screen is pretty much covered with them.
I had to RMA mine this morning, it was 7 days old and just noticed that in the middle of my screen just below the notifications bar there is a small cluster of pixels that are pure light (no colour) - it shows up like this on every colour except black, black works fine.
I tried the usual 'fix' methods and it didn't help at all.
Most people probably wouldn't notice but now I know it is there it would really bother me so I had to RMA it (especially given I have only had it a week!).

Hey Lenny, Iv'e got exactly the same issue right now. It's not visible on black or dark grey but it's like a brighter than white small spot in 1 part of the screen. I have arranged an RMA because it's only appeared today after 1.5 weeks of use. It bugs me because I'm a bit OCD about this kinda stuff.
Just hope the replacement is a good one. Iv'e also got very feint speaker "rapid ticking" sound during calls but I was prepared to live with that one. If I'm lucky the new one will also get rid of that too.

Burn-in on screen

I can't believe I have fricking burn-in on my screen! I have had the phone less than two weeks and have been loving it but last night noticed lines on the screen. They look to line up exactly with the thread topics list on the Tapatalk app.
I have been using the app a lot but there is no way I should have burn in happening. It's not like I have even left the screen sitting in one place when using the app. My hypothesis is that it might have happened from using the ultra brightness mode (adapt display with maximum brightness on with auto brightness turned on) in bright sunshine and using the Tapatalk app.
I have googled burn in for this screen and haven't seen anything so I wonder if I somehow have a bad screen. It did look great when I first got it. If anyone out there has heard anything about this or can check their screen on a dark grey background I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Know the feeling. It freaks me out every time I use Tapatalk.
They also show up when you use a paint app and fill the screen with +-80% brightness with the screen brightness below 30%
However, they disappear when you turn the brightness of the screen up, (and compensate the black to 80% again) so it's just a bit of an error in the led calibration.
The area below the notification bar also has it when you run the colour tests after dialing *#0*#.
It's more predominantly visible on the S5 and Note 3 because those screens have the highest contrast ratio.
I'm horribly OCD over my devices too. There's a 0.5mm distance-to-screen difference between the edges of my screen protector... It bothers me every single day! >.<

Funny you should say that I just got one of those tempered glass screen protectors and was amazed that I got it on without any dust or air bubbles. Unfortunately it is also off a fraction to one side and also doesn't quite line up perfectly around the home key. I am so tempted to try to fix it every day but I know I should just leave it alone. ?

Note 5 screen discoloration issue. May be widespread

I have had my Verizon 64 GB Note 5 for about 6 days now and since day 1 I have noticed that the screen color when on a white background is not uniform. My phone appears to have a section that has a red hue to it around the left side and more of a blueish hue to the right side of the screen. It is very noticeable on anything with a white background. I seem to notice it the most when I am reading text. I have gone back to the Verizon store I got the phone from and looked at their demo model and it seems to have the same issue. I also went to my local Best Buy and looked at 3 other Note 5's and all except one of Best Buy's seemed to have the issue.
Pull up a white background on your Note 5. Do you see this? I am going to take my phone back and swap it out this weekend, But with so many that I have seen with the issue I am not confident that the new one will be any better.
EDIT: Added poll
Got some pics of mine. NOTE!!!! Pictures do slightly exaggerate the issue

I wonder if a bad batch got shipped to my area? It's strange that 4/5 of the phones that I looked at had the issue. This is making me hopeful that I will get a good one when I go swap it out
Yes I have the same issue, imported phone from Singapore.
My 32gb Verizon model has this, except it's my right half of the screen that has the reddish hue. I'm planning on swapping it for a 64gb before my 14 days are up anyway, or else I'd have already returned it. It's incredibly annoying while reading text.
It's like the matrix effect. Once you've taken the blue pill you can't ignore it. I see tinting on every single amoled device I look at now.

Ha! I have been looking at all my co workers phones and I do see uneven back lighting on almost all of them but none have 2 distinctly different colors on each side of the screen like the Note 5 does. I could handle the uneven back lighting but the 2 colors on the Note 5 make me cringe every time I look at it for more than a few seconds. My co worker's iPhone 6 plus has a fairly uneven backlight from left to right but there are no specific colors illuminated more than others so it's easy to ignore at least for me.

I will see if I can get a picture of it but I am not sure if a camera would pick it up. It's fairly subtle. Either way it's still annoying.
Deleted since I thought I had discoloration but didn't after having a few co-workers take a look at my phone.

Got some pictures... Added them to the OP
You know what's weird. I owned a Note 4 on 3 of the 4 big carriers and the AT&T one was the only one that was bearable. It seems like its not as bad on the Korean models, which seem to be exclusive to AT&T.
This is what it looks like on mine
I have the 64gb White from AT&T and I cannot see this at all on mine. Colors look fairly cool throughout, not seeing any discoloration or even uneven backlighting.
no discolouration from what i can tell. though i do notice the colours (or WB) of the panel are different than my S6e panel which is warmer in all Display Modes (at full brightness).

Dark blotches in low brightness

I've just bought this phone yesterday. I've noticed that there are black blotches at the screen (on whole status bar and upper left part of the screen) when viewing dark gray backgrounds at low brightness. Is this normal? This is my first Oneplus phone and also my first phone that has OLED screen.
Edit: I've been looking into it and reading some post and it turns out that this is common on OLED display a couple of years ago. Is it still common with OLED today?
Edit2: added images here
Btw, i have 8/128 midnight black variant
Anyone that is also having this issue?
Hmm not normal. Could it be the stock screen protector stained?

Try this app and see if it happens on all colors.

I've tested it before posting. It's only noticeable with dark gray at 5% brightness. I haven't tested it with other dark colors. I'll try to post an image tonight.
I had alot of issues with grey in lowlight in alot of my old samsungs. Usualy it was pinkish blotches tho.
I dont notice any on my 6t

Even in completely dark room with lowest brightness?
Are you just talking about the phone when the screen is off and you can see light reflecting off it and notice dark kind of blotches on the screen in places
I did notice something like this last week but put it down to condensation or something similar.
I still have the factory supplied screen protector on so perhaps that's got something to do with it.
Would hate to think it's some kind of damage or burn in or something but doubt that, phones only 2 weeks old

It 's the third oneplus 6t that change for this problem and all those I could test are the same including the last changed 2 days ago'.e' a defect of the amoled of all Oneplus, but also Huawei, for example the Mate 10 Pro. Who did not notice was not careful enough, because they certainly had the same problem. Do not worry you can replace it as many times as you want but it will never be perfect, I suggest you keep what you have, because you could get worse, you have to just learn to live with it.

Aw. I was waiting for someone to confirm this. I knew that this was a problem of amoled a few years ago. I've looked everywhere and I can't find recent articles or post about this for amoled so I assumed that it should not exhibit this issue at this day. Sucks that I have to read your post after I sent it for exchange.

Did you get worse when you exchanged yours?
I have a similar issue. For me in low brightness with grey background or in those screen test apps I have a dark stripe centered from top to bottom and some brighter stripes left and right of the dark one.
I think I just have to live with it as it's in low brightness only.

the last one I changed has the only problem .. just from another part of the screen. If I knew I would not have made these changes.

So your first device does not have this issue?
There are good ones out there like mine. Though you need to get lucky to get a really good one. There's always a risk you will get the issue but amoled screens are better overall than a few years ago.

I bought OP6T in a chain of stores .. I changed three devices and three new ones all had the defect somewhere, you could also do RMA infinite, the problem will recur. The image posted before the other user, probably is not has been tested with all colors. For example, one of the 3 my devices does it with green, another one was gray. So you can be sure that the next device that will give you will still have the defect. even if you probably will not notice it. do RMA because the Oneplus displays are of mediocre quality.
