How do I make these recoveries backup to the external sdcard? Both of them have been backing up to the internal one and there's limited storage there to begin with.

In TWRP, after selecting Backup, you can select backup target by selecting the Storage button (right above the Enable compression check box. You should see choices for Internal Storage and Micro SDcard

go download titanium backup off the market then backup apps pull all your files on the new card after you partition it then restore all apps

Ok, I don't quite understand the above.
go download titanium backup off the market = Download Titanium Backup from the Market app on your phone.
backup apps = using Titanium, select 'Backup/Restore' at top, then using the Menu softkey select "Batch" then push the RUN button for 'Backup all user apps + system data". I'm not sure if this is the correct batch job to run... Then push 'Select All' then "Run the batch operation". This will take a moment or two to finish.
"pull all your files on the new card after you paritition it" - this is where I get lost. I have no idea what this means. There's several steps missing here:
- how do you partition it? What file system is used? How many partitions?
- how do you pull (put?) all the files on the new card? It's nonsensical.
- at what point do you copy all the files off the old card onto your PC?
"restore all apps" - I assume you use a batch job in Titanium Backup to do this?

you partition your sd card in your custom recovery image you should have if your phone is rooted, set up your partition ext 2 3 or 4 however much you want then the rest fat32 after that put your old card in your computer copy all the files onto your computer then put your new card in then copy all the files over to the new card put your sd card back in the phone then start up batch restore all apps and settings all done not that hard really if you dont know how to partition your sd card i dont know how you rooted your phone
Run on sentences gives me headache -_-
Heres how I did mine yesteday, went from stock 4gb to adata 16gb c6;
- Went into Ra recovery and did a nandroid + ext backup
- Toggled ms-usb, copied everything from my card to my computer
- Turned off my n1 then inserted my new card
- Went back into recovery, formated my new card with ext partition
- Enabled ms-usb again and copied everything to the new card
- Disabled ms-usb and then did the nandroid restore which also restores your ext partition
titanium backup rocks. thank you for whomever suggested it!
By default, CWM makes a backup to my external sdcard. The only problem with that is my sdcard is 1GB, which is a little under the total size of the backup, and so the whole backup doesn't complete. One solution would probably be to remove the external sdcard and run CWM so that the default storage location would be the internal sdcard, but that's annoying. There should be a way to specify the backup location.
EDIT: I removed the external SDcard, and now I get the error E: Can't mount /sdcard. So I guess it won't use the internal card if it can't find the external one... So I pretty much can't backup my ROM. And the problem can't be that it doesn't see the internal SDcard, because I can go to choose zip from internal sdcard and it will show the folders from the internal card.
If you using romracers cwm you have options for both..

Sorry I should have specified. I flashed CWM from ROM Manager. I guess I'll try out romracer's cwm.
EDIT: Yup, romracer's cwm work's great, and it was easy to flash.
when I back up it's placed in my internal memory
isn't it supposed to back up my system to my external card?? how do I fix this? Do I need to use another recovery?
I tried to look for my card using TWRP but I only see an empty folder named sd-ext but my sd card is called external_sd when using file manager
Is this normal for an A500?
Thanks in advance!

I really don't like necroing a thread, but this seems, too, relavent -- and someone may need an answer
I am using TWRP 2.1.3 right now (just installed it).
Apparently it places the backups on internal storage by default.
If you tap/select the 'mount' option on the main screen you can select that the sdcard be mounted.
You can also select whether to store backups on the internal storage or on the external card from here.
On the backup menu, you might need to tap/select 'refresh free space' or similar option.
Then select what you want to backup, and swipe to backup (as per on-screen instructions).
I have just installed aurora light rom yesterday, and today I found that I can not move any app to my internal "sdcard".
Inside CWM recovery, if I choose "choose zip from internal sdcard", I can see the internal card without problem.
If I use ES explorer, inside the folder: "mnt" I can see two other folders: "sdcard1" and "sdcard". "sdcard" is empty and "sdcard1" has my backups, and other files.
If I go into Storage, I can not see the options of the "sdcard", but I can see that I have almost 2GB for an USB storage.
So, what should I do to have be able to use my internal "sdcard" again?
Thanks for any help.
You can't move any apps to internal sdcard without repartitioning that. Actually you aren't even then moving apps to it, you just take some space from it and put that space to data partition.
Here's instructions for repartitioning: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112857
P.s. Do nandroid backup before repartitioning, you might need it
(It can factory reset your phone and hide your statusbar, if that happens just restore backup and you are good to go)

Do you mean internal sdcard? If so phone doesn't use that memory at all. It's basically like your external sdcard except you can't move apps to it. You can use it for documents, photos, backups etc.

So, it is save to partition that memory to have more space for applications? And why almost all phones just reserve only so little space if has all that space there?

Yes, if you want you can even take all space from internal sdcard to data partition.
It's unusual to have internal storage, external sdcard and internal sdcard like in our U8800. Most of the phones don't have internal sdcard.
Thanks. I already did the new partition. I have more space now.

I am just wondering, if it is safe to keep my backup i just made, on my external SD card? Its much bigger than the backups were for my old device, and its kinda taking up the rest of my internal storage right now...
But what i am wondering is if i do transfer it, will twrp see it successfully in recovery mode in case a backup is needed??
thanks
Hi there!
I'm on a G900FD with TWRP v3.0.2-1 , but TWRP is mostly universal for this level of modification.
TWRP will initially display only the backups in the default backup location. Backups are stored as a (typically timestamped, though any name will do) folder containing the backup images, a log and a settings file.
TWRP keeps its settings, backups and (maybe) themes in the ./TWRP directory in your internal storage. The settings files ( ./TWRP/.twrps , note the dot before twrps, use ls -a to find it) is always located in here, but the default location for backups can be changed from your internal storage to your external storage via TWRP's GUI.
To change default storage location, follow:
1: Reboot to recovery. Enter encryption pattern/PIN/passphrase if needed.
2: Tap Mount, then tap Select Storage. Note at the top of the screen, under the Mount title, is something akin to EMMC or Internal Storage or Internal, you get the idea. This will change in the following steps.
3: Tap the radio button of the storage you want to default to in the popup that appears, then press OK.
4: Verify that the display now reads SD card, External Storage, whatever.
5: Under Home > Backup, the Storage: line should now read External/ SD Card / whatever, instead of the Internal Storage variant.
6: Optional: Make a backup, just to see where it says the backup location is in the log.
To reverse modification, follow instruction again.
Do note that failure to provide the SD card, or failure to mount it, will result in TWRP defaulting back to internal storage, which may fail due to lack of space. Not a problem for me ( 128G SD card represent ), but something to think about.
To transfer the backup from the internal storage to the external, reboot back to Android, and use a file manager to move the entirety of the BACKUPS folder from INTERNAL/TWRP to EXTERNAL/TWRP . Without more information about your build, I can't provide paths to follow, but mine would be:
Internal Location: /storage/emulated/0/TWRP/BACKUPS/(SERIAL NUMBER)/(TIMESTAMP_OF_BACKUP)
External Location: /storage/(SDCARD GIBBERISH)/TWRP/BACKUPS/(SERIAL NUMBER)/(TIMESTAMP_OF_BACKUP)
Note that TWRP will require that each backup is located in the same directory as the serial number of your phone, so i.e. mine must be in:
/storage/98A4-1D0F/TWRP/BACKUPS/e6209199/2016-08-03--21-16-31
for a backup made on the 3rd of August, 2016 at 9:16:31 UTC.
If anything is unclear, feel free to reply!
Happy flashing!
Thanks! I'll have to give this a try when I've got some time tonight
