Titanium vs Nandroid

A little confused here and not that knowledgeable.
Switched my SD cards from a class 2 to a class 6.
I have the paid version of Titanium backup.
Here is what I did:
1. Complete (apps+data) Titanium backup
2. Nandroid + ext backup
3. Copied to computer hd
4. partitioned new card
5. Nandroid restore
(Note: Neither one backed up my photos/vids/music that I can find) But I did copy them to the hd and restored them so no biggie.
So.. should I do a complete Titanium restore now?
The reason I am asking this: All of my apps seemed to be working fine, however, I am not seeing any of the apps on my sd card as I did previously.

edit: just realized you were using apps2sd, so yeah i think you'll have to partition new card and put the image on your new card, then do a nandroid restore, no need for TI.

[Q] How to transfer one phone's info to another?

My Vibrants USB connector is screwy and im going to ask for a replacement. Once I get my replacement, how I do transfer my info?
Contacts and Calendar will automatically get transfered from Google.
With Titanium Backup - do I just copy that folder over from one internal SD to the other and then proceed to reinstall apps?
What about other app data, etc.. Should I just copy over folders from one to other? Would that work?

I'll just echo shrivel and say you should be fine doing that however you will probably need to download the actual apps as the all's don't save with Titanium. Basically when you go to the market and download an app the apk is saved and installed on your phone what titanium will do is save all the data once you make a change to your phone say installing a Rom it wipes the data and uninstalls all of your apps. But it does not delete the apk so when you use titanium to restore it looks for that apk to reinstall it with the same data and setting. If you completely wipe your phone or copy the backup file to a new phone titanium will be looking for the apk to reinstall but its not there.
I know that was kind of long and if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

I'm doing this right now and cant seem to get it to work.

How do I get titanium to pull it off of the sd card? Or if I transfer it to the internal card in a folder (which is what its in) how do I get titanium to see the folder?
I can see the folder with astro on the internal card, but titanium doesn't see it?
What am I doing wrong? any help would be appreciated.

your backup folder containing all the backups should be named TitaniumBackup and placed on the root of your internal sdcard. or you can specify the name of your backup folder in the preferences menu in titaniumbackup.
also, titianium backs up your app+data for you, so you don't need to re-download it from the market. if you want to backup other stuff like call log, text messages, home screen icons, phone contacts etc, use 'mybackup pro'

I feel like an idiot, How do I get to the root?
Do I have to use a computer to do it? or can I transfer the files there from the sd card or the internal memory?

In astro if you press the home button it should take you to the root of the internal sd. Top should say that you are in directory /sdcard. Just move the TitaniumBackup folder to there and it should work.
EDIT: The home button in astro BTW, at the top under the notification bar, not the android home button on the bottom of the phone.

titanium backup folder is there and all the files are in it.
When I open up the app titanium back up, go to back up/ restore and then hit menu, batch, I don't see the files that are in that folder only whats on the phone as it came from tmobile (none of my apps and files)
What am I doing wrong or failing to do?

If your going back to the same kernel/ROM you can do a nandroid backup of your system files as well.

No need. You just install titanium on the phone and do the backup. You can then move the entire directory to your external sd card. When you flash, you just install it again and then restore your backup.

Just change the backup folder in TB - Menu - Preferences - Backup folder name from the default of TitaniumBackup (which is on the internal SD card) to external_sd/Titanium Backup (which is on the external SD card). Voila! You may need to reinstall TB from the Market if you have deleted everything but the backups will remail on your external card.

norm2002 thanks, you know without changing the directory (before reading your post) i backed up everything and then flashed with JMI, flashed perfectly and then installed Titanium back and when i tried to restore i see no files to restore it was 0 written. I was assuming TB uploads all data to it's server but now No Voila for me. But now you taught me how to backup. Will press thanks for your help.

That was very helpfull. Had the same problem wenn i flashed the Roto-rom. Thought i was covered with Titanium. But the flash deleted mij internal-sd. Now all is on the external and i am very pleased..

i've always run how norm2002 describes it. hasn't failed me yet.

oh men, no offence, but this forum is becoming a rubbish container...
times ago I remember this forum as one where there were only advanced users posting their finds and where the newbies could read and learn about...
but now every new(to android and not only!) user is opening 3d here and there so the usefull 3d are going to finish bottom page or even in the other pages and finding what you need is becoming just as searching a needle in the rick.

Thanks, I'll make the change too.

If you want to be sure, you could always copy the titanium backup folder from the tab to your PC(USB), and copy it back after formatting/flashing a rom.

Nice tip norm2002! I can't count the times I have deleted my precious backups when I repartitioned!

The more places you can have backup files saved, the safer you are. With TB it's wise to have the backup files stored on:
- External SD card
- PC
- Dropbox
This way, regardless of what happens, you have your backup files safe and can set up your Tablet (or a new one if your old Tablet gets lost/stolen) easily.

Clone SD card (with a2sd on)?

I've noticed I'm pretty much at my limit for space on my current SD card (like 80MB remaining on a 4GB!)...
I've ordered an 8GB card to replace this one... but how can I "clone" my current 4GB card (with a2sd partitions) and then copy it over to my 8GB card, without losing data, settings, apps, etc? Is there a way?

Do this all from within Clockwork Recovery:
1) Make a nandroid backup
2) Connect the phone to a computer
3) Partitions menu > mount USB storage
4) Copy all contents from the old SD card to a temporary folder on your computer (including the clockworkmod folder which contains the nandroid backup you just took)
5) Unmount and disconnect from computer.
6) Pull battery to shut the phone off, or if you would prefer you can boot the phone and then turn the phone off immediately afterward. Pulling battery just saves time.
7) Put new SD card in
8) Boot into clockwork
9) Format the card with Clockwork w/ ext partition
10) Connect to computer, mount USB storage again, copy all files back to the phone
11) Unmount and disconnect cable from computer
12) Nandroid > advanced restore > Restore sd-ext only
13) Reboot and you're done.
And if something goes wrong, it's not really a big deal since you will still have the original files on the old SD card so you can try again or ask for help to try another method.

Haha yeah, I think it's the easiest way to do it with Windows, since you can't read the ext partition from the computer. You could probably just copy the contents of both partitions through Linux if you're comfortable doing that.

Doesn't a nandroid backup the ext partition too?
If you're using windows you could just backup your fat32 partition on your PC and partition your new card and then copy all your files back and do your nandroid restore.

Clockwork does not back up my ext partition. It can't mount it or anything. Not sure why. Might be because its ext4, but when I do nandroids the sd-ext backup always fails.
I have to use Ubuntu and mount as storage. Then both of my partitions mount on my computer and I can do as I please. For me this seems easiest anyway. Simple copy and paste and it can be done from a live cd for those that dont already have Ubuntu.

Interesting. I was sure you could format a card with ext partition through Clockwork but apparently you can't. You can do it through ROM Manager though, so I guess you may have to boot into the phone to get to it.
The programs on the ext partition won't show up yet of course. Don't be alarmed. Just partition the card through ROM Manager, then once you're done doing that, do the nadroid advanced restore. If there are any problems after a reboot (i.e., it didn't work correctly), go back and try doing the regular full nandroid restore.

This doesnt create a partition though. It just formats an existing partition. You'll have to use drumist's method of going through Rom manager to actually create the ext3 parition from the phone.

Tried running ROM Manager - of course, it's installed on the 4GB card which isn't on my phone when I have the 8GB in to format. So then I re-installed it using the APK... but I get the exclamation mark when it boots to recovery to format... probably because a2sd is installing the same program on the ext part which it is now trying to format.
I think I'm going to have to format/partition it using Linux somehow instead, no?

someone recommended in another thread that when that happens you just pull out the battery and then use volume down+power to boot back into recovery and it should then work.
But the method I use is to do it from Ubuntu (a linux version). If you dont want to install Ubuntu on your computer you can make a bootable CD or USB drive with Ubuntu on it (directions for this are on the Ubuntu download page) and actually run Ubuntu from the CD/USB without ever installing it on your computer. From there you can use gParted to create paritions. And while I recommend making backups, gparted even allows you to resize and move partitions without deleting anything.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. My suggestion then is to format the card through linux if you have a SD card reader. Easiest way is to use an Ubuntu LiveCD. Do you know how to do this on your own?
Also, definitely do a full nandroid restore once the SD card is reformatted. Since you booted the phone and tried to install an app, it's possible something got screwed up -- nothing to worry about though because a full nandroid restore should revert everything.

I'm reverting back now, going to sleep on it, and then investigate formatting it via LiveCD tomorrow morning. It's been several years since I've had to go near anything Unix.

By the way, another option is to just do a clean install on your phone with a ROM that has ROM Manager built in. Use that to do the format on the SD card.

That got me thinking...Ive never had a problem adding an ext partition using Rom Manager. Ive done it to 3 SD cards now without a single issue. BUT, Ive also always done it while on cm6/7 which both came with Rom Manager pre-installed with the rom and quite a bit of integration with the rom manager app...just a thought...
EDIT: Scratch that, I used it for 2 SD cards, the 3rd was done with Ubuntu.

I did this with two different SD cards on fr008. Both were sandisks. One was a 16 gb class 4 and the other was an 8 gb class 6. I couldn't get gparted to partition the 8 gb for whatever reason. I didn't know what Ubuntu was when I partitioned the 16 gb

It seems like an oversight that maybe of the masses of people with Android devices that one day the general (non-xda) population would want a simple way to transfer their sd card data to a larger card...
I Imagine there are a bunch of people out there clueless.
Hell, I read XDA and there was still no clear simple way in this thread.

Got it to work, finally. Required some back-and-forth with the Nandroid backups, but I have everything running off of my 8GB SD card now, without reinstalling!
Now, to sell off my 4GB card... anyone?

Titanium Backup Pro adn TWRP won't recognize backup on SD card

As the title says neither TB nor TWRP will recognize my SD card, the backup on it respectively. I made a Nandroid-backup with TWRP 3.0.2 on my Z3C, put the SD card into my XC and tried to restore from said Nandroid-backup but TB doesn't even recognize the SD card. Says there is no TWRP folder/backup on it. But there definitely is. I can see it in the browser. I also copied it to my internal storage and from there I could access it without problems.
Weirdly enough TWRP also doesn't recognize the backup folder. When I select to restore and select my SD card there is no backup to choose from. I'm using TWRP 3.1.1 on my XC.
Phone is rooted and running the latest fw 34.3.A.0.217 with Genesis kernel 1.05-nondrm
Is the backup faulty or could it be because of some incompatibilities with the kernel?

Backup a file so TB makes a new folder then copy your the contents of your backup into it and try again and you need to select your SD card in TWRP.

I backed everything up with TWRP to my SD card. The folder is there, as are the files.
TB just doesn't recognize my SD card at all. It only recognizes my internal storage, but not my SD card.
When I copy the TWRP backup from the SD card to the TWRP folder on my internal storage I can restore from Nandroid backup.
But I think that the backup is faulty too, because after restoring contacts and messages to test it the apps crash. When I open the telephone app it crashes and says "android.process.acore" has been closed. It says the same when I open the messaging and contacts app but the messaging app doesn't crash.

I was talking about TB and what I've done in the past after restoring my Phone to get TB to recognize my files. Browse through a few pages of the TWRP threads, I'm sure I've seen similar issues reported about the SD.

A common solution to this problem is to 'Clear Cache' of affected apps in their App Info / Storage dialog.

Yes, I have restored data+cache. Maybe that's what caused the errors. Weird thing is, no messages were restored except the drafts I didn't send but saved.

I've read somewhere that since 4.4.4 TB cannot read/write a partition it wasn't installed on. Did you mean that? To create a TB folder on the SD card so TB will have access to the SD card?
Edit: ok, so I tried this method

create a folder on the external sdcard,using the following folder-structure:
/storage/extSdCard/Android/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/
If you already have existing backups, move them with a file-explorer from their current place to:
/storage/extSdCard/Android/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/
Lastly, go to the preferences of TitaniumBackup, choose “Backup folder location” and choose the above specified folder.
Finish.
And it does kinda work. I do now have access to my SD card via TB. But it still says there is no TWRP folder on it. I even copied the TB backup to the TWRP folder and the TWRP folder to the TB folder. No luck.
Also TWRP doesn't recognize the TWRP backup I created on the SD card even though it recognizes the card itself.

If you copied files to computer:
It adds .zip extension to tar.gz files
And .txt extension to properties files
That's why program cannot recognize them.
U should delete that extra additions from file names
