when I back up it's placed in my internal memory
isn't it supposed to back up my system to my external card?? how do I fix this? Do I need to use another recovery?
I tried to look for my card using TWRP but I only see an empty folder named sd-ext but my sd card is called external_sd when using file manager
Is this normal for an A500?
Thanks in advance!

I really don't like necroing a thread, but this seems, too, relavent -- and someone may need an answer
I am using TWRP 2.1.3 right now (just installed it).
Apparently it places the backups on internal storage by default.
If you tap/select the 'mount' option on the main screen you can select that the sdcard be mounted.
You can also select whether to store backups on the internal storage or on the external card from here.
On the backup menu, you might need to tap/select 'refresh free space' or similar option.
Then select what you want to backup, and swipe to backup (as per on-screen instructions).

By default, CWM makes a backup to my external sdcard. The only problem with that is my sdcard is 1GB, which is a little under the total size of the backup, and so the whole backup doesn't complete. One solution would probably be to remove the external sdcard and run CWM so that the default storage location would be the internal sdcard, but that's annoying. There should be a way to specify the backup location.
EDIT: I removed the external SDcard, and now I get the error E: Can't mount /sdcard. So I guess it won't use the internal card if it can't find the external one... So I pretty much can't backup my ROM. And the problem can't be that it doesn't see the internal SDcard, because I can go to choose zip from internal sdcard and it will show the folders from the internal card.
If you using romracers cwm you have options for both..

Sorry I should have specified. I flashed CWM from ROM Manager. I guess I'll try out romracer's cwm.
EDIT: Yup, romracer's cwm work's great, and it was easy to flash.
I have just installed aurora light rom yesterday, and today I found that I can not move any app to my internal "sdcard".
Inside CWM recovery, if I choose "choose zip from internal sdcard", I can see the internal card without problem.
If I use ES explorer, inside the folder: "mnt" I can see two other folders: "sdcard1" and "sdcard". "sdcard" is empty and "sdcard1" has my backups, and other files.
If I go into Storage, I can not see the options of the "sdcard", but I can see that I have almost 2GB for an USB storage.
So, what should I do to have be able to use my internal "sdcard" again?
Thanks for any help.
You can't move any apps to internal sdcard without repartitioning that. Actually you aren't even then moving apps to it, you just take some space from it and put that space to data partition.
Here's instructions for repartitioning: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112857
P.s. Do nandroid backup before repartitioning, you might need it
(It can factory reset your phone and hide your statusbar, if that happens just restore backup and you are good to go)

Do you mean internal sdcard? If so phone doesn't use that memory at all. It's basically like your external sdcard except you can't move apps to it. You can use it for documents, photos, backups etc.

So, it is save to partition that memory to have more space for applications? And why almost all phones just reserve only so little space if has all that space there?

Yes, if you want you can even take all space from internal sdcard to data partition.
It's unusual to have internal storage, external sdcard and internal sdcard like in our U8800. Most of the phones don't have internal sdcard.
Thanks. I already did the new partition. I have more space now.

First of all... I wanted to start this post off by saying yes, I know I'm an idiot.
Now that that's out of the way....
A few weeks ago, I got so excited to flash a custom ROM, that somehow when I ran TWRP and backed up my system to the external SD card, I also wiped my external SD card. Because I'm an idiot. I don't know how or why it happened really. I just know it did.
I had previously saved EVERYTHING to my external SD card, thinking that was the safest place for the data... and now the past two years of my life documented in photographs are gone.
I have tweaked out on running custom phone software since the days of the original Razr and flashing Alltel firmware on it... and this is the first major screw up I've ever done.
Now... does TWRP back up that data somewhere, somehow? Or is it just system data/apps that get backed up? If TWRP didn't save it somewhere, is there possibly somewhere that the contents of my external SD card were MOVED upon installation of the custom ROM?

You should never store your sole backup copy on the same device as is being backed up as you probably realize now.
Anyway, it's not clear from your post if you were storing a redundant copy of your backup on your external SD card or if you had configured TWRP to use your external SD card as the primary folder and therefore sole backup copy. The default location is usually /data/media/0/TWRP. Try a search for TWRP folders using a root aware file browser. With any luck you will find a backup on your internal SD card.
If not, then the only way to recover would be to try a data recovery program on your external SD card. Unless you do Google /cloud backups as well?
.
Recuva does most of the work well, and there is an option to restore the directory structure too if you poke around in the settings. Puran File Recovery works where Recuva did not in recovering some images and videos.
Both I have tried after an accidental format of the SD card from the phone settings.
They are both free desktop software.
Important to take not not to copy any files over to the affected card, or even your recovered files as well. Only do so when you are sure you have recovered all that you can onto a desktop folder.

The second scenario is what I believe I did. And I think when it created the backup, it wiped the external SD to suit it's needs. Problem being that the Nandroid backup wanted 6 gigs ish of space, and I had 4.5 or so remaining on the internal SD.... don't know what stuff I had on there... but *shrug*

Thank you for the tip. I will try both of these. I think the nandroid backup wrote over the areas on the SD where the pictures were stored. You'd think it would pick the empty space before the occupied space... but I guess since it wiped it clean prior to backing up, it was ALL empty space. *sigh*
Thank you both very much for your help.
I have the 7" Tab 4 and am running rooted stock ROM. Have Titanium Backup pro, but there's no option to "move to SD" for any application, even ones I know can be moved to SD. Also, using the regular Android interface to move apps, sometimes they fail with an unhelpful error of "Unable to move app to SD".
Also, I tried to move my Titanium Backup folder from internal storage to the external storage. Moved it using ES File explorer to /storage/extSDCard/TitaniumBackup but TB doesn't detect it, and if I browse to it and set it as the folder, it tells me the folder is not writeable.
Have you applied the kitkat sd patch/fix and reformatted your sd? I cant remember what you need to format sd to as mine worked striaght out of its package on my tab s.

Applying the patch fixed part of the problem - TB can now write to the SD card. I didn't reformat - SD card was working otherwise and worked straight out of the box too.
Still no "move to SD" option (or the reverse) though.
Try folder mount from the play store
http://www.devasque.com/foldermount/index.html
That's has the download and has the [How to] and tips
You can use an app like rom toolbox or link2sd and it should let you move the majority to your sd card. Now some apps do not allow this period. Its how the dev had coded their app to work but if you try these it may help a bunch. I myself use the rom toolbox lite and have no problems at all!

I am running stock rom on Android version 5.0. I have rooted and installed T WRP recovery. After I did a backup through TWRP to my internal phone storage, I cannot find the folder where the backup is stored yet my file manager shows is that the storage has been used.
Secondly, I put in a SD card and performed another backup (storing it to the sdcard). After TWRP completed that backup was able to find the folder for it easily using my file manager. I still cannot find the location of the first backup that I did. And it's taking up 10 gigs worth of space on my phone's internal memory.
Has anyone else had a problem with TWRP?
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Any input would help. Thanks.

Should be in twrp folder. Just if you can't find it, enter recovery and delete the backup in internal storage. Just keep the 1 in external.
