I am unable to update my rooted Nexus 7 with OTA 4.3 updates! I have stock ROM and stock Kernal.
I got the 4.3 notification update but when i select it my Nexus 7 reboots but instead of installing the updates it takes me to the TWRP recovery! I even tried using the install option and selected the update downloaded in the cache folder but it didnt install!
All i want is to update to 4.3 without losing my data
Please help! Thanks
Most likely you / an app modified something on your /boot and/or your /system partition and so one of the asserts is failing during the update process. I would suggest to do the update manually with the factory image. In my blog (a link you can find in my signature) I described, how to do it without loosing data.

There are a lot of assumptions in your tutorial, like for instance, that everyone knows what to type those commands into or an easy way to copy the files to the sdcard to keep the root.
A literal step by step would be nice.

I suppose if someone is digging around with rooting and flashing he should know the basics, like fastboot and adb. If not, he should try to learn those things before modifying it. Everything someone needs to know is written here within the how-to's.

To flash the bootloader do I need to be in recovery or Android... or bootloader?

OTA updated can only be applied to complete stock system including stock recovery. You cannot flash OTA with TWRP. Either you can get a stock zip file that is TWRP compatible (check XDA general thread) or go back to complete stock and apply the update.

I agree I know a little, but, many 'Senior' members, presume we have 'senior' knowledge, and OK about learning first, that's fine, but, if we already had this knowledge, we wouldn't be asking for help!

No, it's not that someone doesn't want to help, but nobody wants to write the same stuff again and again. Fastboot, adb, recovery, etc. are basics for rooting and flashing and there are already a lot of very useful tutorials dealing with these topics. So why not collecting all those useful information and putting it together ...
I was able to flash stock 4.3 which wiped my data (I planned on this happening) and rooted it again to use stick mount.
The problem is when 4.2.2 came out, I was able to update with the OTA even though I was rooted, can't remember how, but I'm pretty sure I did. I had used the toolkit which makes things simple for everything, you basically just plug the Nexus in and hit a few buttons on your keyboard to unlock and root.
Well, because of the rooting, 4.3 does not currently work with OTA, so it actually required some know how to do.
The point I'm trying to make here, is that if you are going to write a tutorial, its good to be thorough. If you don't like writing the same thing over and over, write a Getting Started page, and link it every time you write a guide that needs drivers installed and fastboot/adb tools downloaded.
Its not hard to do what I did for any stretch of imagination, but it takes a bit of googling and referencing multiple sources to get anything done because of all the assumptions that are made around here. Its pointless to write a half of a guide, because the people that understand it don't need to read it because they probably already figured it out on their own.
You are free to ignore my "tutorial", but, sorry, I will not Google around on behalf of other people because they probably might have a lack of knowledge to understand my postings.

Ok, i just heard of the one click root app now out for the nexus one.. I always wanted to root, but every time I did, i was never able to get it. So anyways back to my questions...
*[1] I have stock froyo frf91.. I manually updated all the versions leading up to frf91 not once did I receive an ota update... Once I root, will that cancel my ota's? (even tho I manually update them) will I still get an ota update to gingerbread if I root?
*[2] Once I do this root thing, i want the best rom that includes a fast, clean, eye candy, all black theme. (Including the notification bar) after I find this, how do I go about and apply it? How do I install it?.. Isn't there an app in the market where I can look at the newest roms and themes and just apply them from there?
Sorry for the noob questions guys, i just want to witness what all of you have.. I want to unleash the potential of my nexus one! Lol.
** On a side note, i also heard that once you get a cyanogen rom, it is a must that you download the titanium back up app.. is that right?.. because that rom deletes everything...?
Thanks guys, very much!

Never heard bout the Backup thing issue,
But No, once rooted you dont get OTA's (due the fact you change recovery image and rom)
I believe if you still keep things stock like Recovery, and Official ROM you do! (but unsure of this)
Also there is a adb way to root which is simple and thats how i rooted my phone!
you can give that a try instead of one click!
there are no roms in market..
Also try to look through the Dev section, to even apple Dev roms you need to flash custom recovery then do a nandroid back up, then from ther you use the apple from sd!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736271
this is the method i followed
-note if this is gonna be your first time rooting, i suggest you read all info possible bout it, then read it again.. the think on how your going to do it , then reread the info then apply.. while applying stil read the info
woah there. He'll still get the OTA notification and can even download it. You just can't apply the OTA updates. You have to use a rooted one, generally available here before you'll ever even see the OTA notification on your phone.
if you are rooting for the first time do it the loop adb way. Its a bit more involved but once you do it you will learn a bit about adb and other methods that you will need in the future.
One-Click root is going to make the more fun parts of modding harder in the future. The guide in the stickies is very easy to follow and it will pay off in the long run.
Or fastboot oem unlock it and have the badge of honor
That's the thing, i've tried doin it the adb way.. it just never worked for me..
And I also don't want to unlock the bootloader

Yup, I did that yesturday, there are a few more steps after rooting to get custom roms to work but you can do it.
On another note, cant you just flash back to stock, then using rom manager get rid of the custom recovery, then unroot using the 1click root? Wont that put you back to stock? cant you use the ota's then?
The AndRoot app is awesome. U can turn root ON or OFF anytime (even for ota).

and wear it proudly! fastboot is a cinch and pretty hard to ef up. the worst part is the syntax (especially if you dont have the recovery image in the right directory). i found this link to be helpful in learning how to use fastboot.
i used fastboot to unlock and to flash amon ra. then, running amon ra, i flashed whatever ROM i wanted. later, just for s and giggles i used rom manager to install the clockwork mod recovery.
if you dont like the outcome, you can always flash back to stock which will redo the stock recovery too... but the unlock badge will remain proudly displayed.

then you should br helping out all the people that mess up their devices afyer using toolkits and dont know how to fix it. i havent seen you help out, yet you are still recommending toolkits. why is that?
I used the steps outlined at http://rootzwiki.com/topic/28544-guide-nexus-7-bootloadersrecoveriesrootback-to-stock/ to guide me.
I must say it might not be trivial for the non-software-developer types.
I was a Java developer for many years, so I didn't have much problems setting up Java,
Android-sdk, etc.
My N7 was recognized by adb when booted normally, but after I flashed cwm, I could not do 'adb shell' to mount the /system partition and rename the recovery-from-boot.p file to prevent the recovery from getting reset to stock each time.
I ended up installing the ROM Manager app to enable me to boot into cwm recovery.
I have done the obligatory cwm backup. I believe this is the nandroid backup?
Edit:
I used my Linux box to re-flash the bootloader and cwm recovery images to the Nexus 7, and I could 'adb shell' and rename the recovery-from-boot.p file. So I'm all set now.
I just needed to run 'adb start-server' and 'fastboot' using sudo, so it might have been a permissions issue on my Windows box.

Looks like I'm not all set, after all Today, right before I plan to take the JB 4.1.2 OTA update, I notice my tablet won't boot into CWM, like it did a couple of days ago. I did rename the one file and things looked normal. What could have happened to my CWM?
Edit:
So there are 2 files that need to be renamed, not 1?
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
And there was a bug in JB 4.1.1 that prevented booting into cwm recovery unless the device was plugged into USB??

In the early days, automatic transmissions were more problematic and much more expensive. Today they are pretty efficient, even though a manual transmission gives you better control over the car, which most people don't really need for everyday driving.
If you frequently get stuck in stop-and-go traffic, you'll wish you had an automatic transmission.
Look at these lazy people..

Yes there was a bootloader bug on the nexus 7 and most people could not boot into CWM recovery without plugging it into their computer.
I however used TWRP back then [have since switched back to CWM touch, now that the bug is fixed] and had no issues. Now I have no issues with CWM touch, I can boot it directly from fastboot menu, or "reboot -> recovery" when booted.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. They both have their ups and downs. If you're willing to learn a little about how Android works and learn some adb and fast boot commands then you should definitely do it manually.
If you just want to be a "1337 Haxorz" and aren't willing to learn then just use a toolkit.
OK, just one sub-question on rooting. I see no real reason to root except maybe to get more tablet interface than nexus has. Kinda like when the wifi indicator is at the bottom, since there are those !$#$$ back/home buttons already and a lot of wasted space Anyways, the question.
I bougth N7 16Gb and upgraded via forced OTA to 4.1.2. Do all these root methods work with 4.1.2?
Thanx,

I agree. I wanted the stock images to test if my device got a bad flash from the factory causing all of the multi touch and freezing issues. I ended up just exchanging at BB and have yet to upgrade to JSS15 in case that is the culprit.

Nope. A factory image contains all the partitions, not just an update zip. Its used mainly to help devices that are completely broken (won't turn on), or people who want to unroot and go back to complete stock.

It is extremely rare to have anything go wrong just unlocking the phone. You might as well go ahead and do it because eventually you will and it'll force a wipe data. Might as well do it now before you install too much stuff.
You can leave root and custom recovery until the images show up if you are concerned about borking your system.

oh i gotcha, but you have your steps out of order. first you unlock the bootloader which doesn't flash anything to your device. then you push the recovery image to your device from your PC using adb. yes this step could go horribly wrong, but if you have everything in place you should be ok. this step is very easy as well, not much to screw up and doesnt take any time at all, none of this does.
then once the recovery is installed, reboot your phone so you know everything comes up fine. then reboot into the recovery and flash SuperSU and voila! you have a rooted phone. boot back into the OS and run an app that requires root (Root Checker is a good one to use as a test) to make sure all is well
i understand your concern, but of all the android devices i have owned, the new nexus has been by far the easiest one of all to root and it is meant to be that way so developers can play with it and customize it and learn from it
plus there's this too

Google has never waited before. The only thing that generally holds up posting factory images are licensing issues. They posted the 4.3 images for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), and various Galaxy Nexus devices. There is no reason they didn't post the Nexus 7 images unless it is licensing related.

Hey Guys,
I get an error with my tablet about once a month or so where I am unable to use any internet on my tablet, it seems like something breaks to do with google services, I fix it by just reflashing system.img via fastboot.
I'm looking for a way to be able to flash system.img via a zip file or something in recovery so that I don't have to plug my tablet into a computer every time I want to fix it...
Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: If I knew how to make zips I would have the zip flash system.img, supersu and then xposed framework
Bump
I would assume there is an easier method of fixing your issue but if you want to keep it as such then this may help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290009
You can flash raw images to partitions but I'm not 100% if you can flash a raw system.img as I believe it may be too big, if it turns out that you can't then you will need to convert the .img easily done using android kitchen (lots of tutorials on xda)
Adding supersu and xposed to the flash is super easy as well
Try it out yourself, do some digging in xda, if you're stuck let me know and I'll help you out
Best of luck!

Which system version are you on, and which version of TWRP did you try? Where did you get the TWRP? Check this thread it has all the walkthroughs and download links needed... Side note this should be in general or q&a not in the Dev section
We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.
I'm on the stock rom 4.4, and I've already gone through the steps, as I said and understand how these things work, the cwm I'm using now installed but doesn't allow for a data backup. I read there isn't one for this phone which allows that.

Which system version are you on, and which version of TWRP did you try? Where did you get the TWRP? Check this thread it has all the walkthroughs and download links needed... Side note this should be in general or q&a not in the Dev section
