New Google Maps directional accuracy - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've started to notice lately that the new Google Maps doesn't seem to be very accurate in terms of the direction I'm facing. If I hold my phone flat in my hand screen up and consider the ear speaker as the needle of the compass and face an object it is off by a considerable amount... Is that the correct way to do it? Wouldn't the top area where the light sensors and earpiece are be the head of the compass? I attached a screen shot to demonstrate how off it is. Also during this time I was locked to 15/19 satellites according to GPS Status and Toolbox. I'm currently on the PAC MAN 23.0.0 Thanks for any input or ideas.

So I guess what I'm looking for is if it's just a software bug, a known issue? Has anyone else noticed this issue? Is there a way to calibrate your compass? Also I hate that now with the new maps I can not click my triangle and it tell me accurate to X meters anymore... Kinda sucks...

Maps on the Nexus 4 has put me in the next town since I git it in November. No update has corrected that unless wireless was turned on. This is not how my Samsung GNex (or even my work iPhone 5) works, which is always accurate. Turn on wireless, or enable Scanning alway available in the Wi-Fi Advanced menu to lessen the gross inaccuracy of the Nexus 4 location service.

So you're saying to just leave Wi-Fi on regardless of whether you're in a Wi-Fi area and that will help?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

Yes. It also saves battery in that it stops Location Services from using your GPS chip, they'll use Wi-Fi location instead to get an estimation.
It's a part of the new Fused Location Provider. In 4.3, there's a setting that will keep Wi-Fi on for location scanning regardless of whether or not you have it manually turned on. I recommend turning that on.

If you're not near Wi-Fi; no, it shouldn't help sadly :/

So I was looking at the screen shot and I did have Wi-Fi on. So we've come to the conclusion that the Nexus 4 just has sketchy location svcs? Seems weird. Being Googles flagship device. So there is no way to recalibrate just the compass so that the arrow will be facing the same way I am facing?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Well, I have noticed that while in navigation the arrow auto-locks to the direction of travel on whatever street that you're on—so navigation should be fine.
That is strange that you're having this issue—I'll have to test it on a family members Nexus 4.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I have noticed the same issue ever since updating to the newest Maps. The compass was relatively accurate before the update, but afterwards it's usually off by about 30 to 40 degrees.

Download a compass and see. I suggest a app like GPS status or GPS test. They both have a compass built into them as well as testing and reporting your gps.
I never noticed a issue with the device or maps. Just checked in on the couch right now. The compass is working just fine.

So I did so run a test again last night here at home with Wi-Fi off and downloaded an app called gps essentials that I used with the compass to calibrate. It seems OK for now. I guess it just has its moments.... :what:

I have the same issue. Just uninstalled the new maps. All sorted.

You should know that last Google Maps update messed up the deep sleep state of the system.
I´m running Carbon ROM, but also tested with other 2 ROM´s and the results were the same, around 20%-25% battery drain over night.
I read that disabling "Reporting Location" and "Location History" under Location settings in the Google Settings app(the one with the green icon) helps a little, but still is an issue.
With these settings disabled, I get around 5% battery drain over night. Although the wakelock has decreased, is still there waking up the device. Already reported to Google to see if they can do anything to fix it. The wakelock appears as "Google Services".
Before update I had around 3% battery drain over night(around 8 hours) with WiFi.
It is the same for you guys?.
Thanks

Today I managed 13 1/2 hours with 30% left.
This is about average for me. But this is with 3 hours screen on time. And used Runtastic Pro with GPS for 30 mins and also about 30 mins streaming AAA through my Jambox via Tune In... Pretty decent. I have better days if I don't use it as much it will last about 16-20 hours.

Just in case anyone else is following this or even remotely interested. I reinstalled Maps 6.14 today and NOW I feel like I have the NEW maps.. Lol. I just ask myself WHY GOOGLE WHY?!?! The old maps is soo much better, faster, easier to use, even has more features. I love everything about it. So anyway it also fixed this screwed up compass thing by the way. My wife was experiencing the same issue on her Galaxy S4 with the new maps. I'll keep this one as long as I can or until they fix the new one.. Thank you very much.

[Poll] Can your Nexus S get a GPS lock?

Got at Best Buy at 7:30. Got my Nexus S. It was so sick. Til the GPS wouldn't get a lock. GenieWidget couldn't get wireless location either. Using T-Mobile. Nexus One locked just fine.
Also the demo phone didn't seem to be having issues so I got an exchange. This one doesn't work either. Who here can get a lock on their GPS?

I left the app open for a min then I force closed it then restarted the phone and now works like a champ!!!!
Mine locked to 7 sats in 5 seconds on the first try while inside. Walked into the back yard and got 11 sats, accuracy down to 5m.

I tested mine.
The globe star should be the icon and is it solid means it's locked in?
If so, I got mine locked in in about 15-20 seconds (Bay Parkway and 69th Street, Brooklyn).
I got a lock immediately even in a GPRS area.

Then uh why does GPS work on my Nexus One and my Vibrant?
I tested my Nexus S (T-Mobile) side by side with my Incredible (Verizon) and they both locked fairly quickly onto GPS. Repeated the test in a few different locations yesterday and today, and the Nexus S did well, as did the Inicredible.
Indoors with GPS off (and Wifi off) is a different story. The Incredible will show my approximate location in Google Maps, whereas the Nexus says "Waiting for location" then after a while "Your current location is unavailable". I guess the Nexus S can't use the cell towers to get a fix .
5-6 sats locked in under 15 seconds indoors. 11 locked within 30 seconds, but I haven't tried with no wifi or cell for aGPS assist.
Try getting the app GPS Status & Toolbox from the Market...it will download the GPS almanac and give the phone a better initial starting point for cold starts.
I have both Network Towers and GPS turned on and I always have a tiny blue circle around my position. With my Nexus One, the blue circle disappeared and had I had perfect lock
Even then though, the Nexus S is a bit slow at properly figuring out where I am, especially during Navigation. The GPS functionality is below the Nexus One.
Immediate lock.
Pretty heavy rain here in Los Angeles last night. GPS took a little longer to lock up on my way to dinner, but still locked position within a 60-90 seconds. Funny thing was that it reported accuracy of only 1300m the whole drive, but the position displayed on the map was 100% spot on to my actual location.
The Galaxy S line came out with HORRIBLE GPS, it was unusable and became a fixation for hatred of the device for many. As newer firmwares came out, it improved dramatically and I have no complaints with it on my SGS now. My friend with a T-Mobile Vibrant has stopped using his and gone back to an iPhone 3G because of the lousy GPS on it.
Samsung has supposedly changed the antenna for GPS and WiFi from the one used in older Galaxy S devices; I think it's remarkably improved.

Gps battery use

Does the gps really use much more battery if kept on? I've always been under the impression that it would drain the battery quicker than anything else. Recently though, I've just been leaving it on constantly and have noticed very little extra battery usage. It seems to come on briefly when I do a search or other location using services, but it didn't seem to be an extra drain otherwise.
Anyone have any input or some input about gps battery usage?
Sent from my <tw> powered vibrant.
As far as I know, the GPS only kicks on when an app requires it. So unless you have something in the background that's constantly asking for your location it shouldn't really drain the battery in a way that would be notisible.... As far as I know

Sounds about right just make sure you don't have a lot of apps running that use the gps
Sent from my EVO 4G using XDA App
In earlier versions of Android, having the GPS setting "on" actually activated the GPS system directly. In current versions, the setting only controls whether GPS-aware apps are allowed to use GPS at all, or not.
So as you have surmised, leaving the setting "on" doesn't use any additional battery power unless you're actually running a GPS-related app (Maps, navigation, camera, etc).
To save battery, just turn on GPS whenever you need it.
No idea why should leave it on all the time, coz it is really draining battery if it is running (to be clear when it is really running but not just on)
I haven't turned my gps off in 2 months and I average between 12 and 18 hours of moderate use.

The point the OP is trying to make is that GPS doesn't drain the battery unless you're in an app that uses it.
I leave it on because only a handful of apps use it, and I'm usually not in those alps for hours at a time.

For people who are prone to losing their phones, such as my GF, its a good idea to leave it on and installing an app like Lost Phone where you can send the lost phone a txt and receive a map view of its exact location. As far as i know the android OS does not support remote activation so it must be left on. Like others have mentioned it does not cause a noticeable battery drain while its not in use. Its come in handy numerous times...too many times...

Thanks everyone, that's good to know! I understand I will see some additional battery usage when I'm in an app that uses gps, but I was really just curious if I could leave gps "on" while idle and not experience any additional battery use.

Battery life hog: Latitude

Hi everyone, so I am the proud owner of 3 Nexus S' and I have to say, probably the most awesome phone I have ever owned... Battery life is good on all 3 phones with an average of 20 hours on average use... however as soon as I enable LATITUDE on either of the 3 devices.. battery life drops to around 8 hours with the same average use. I believe people are aware of this issue, but I could not find a fix other than obviously disabling the feature.
Is this a software bug for Google yet to fix, or is Latitude/GPS that much of a battery drainer (sometimes up to 20% in battery usage in info)
Same here. Battery drops as soon as it is enabled.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Well Latitude continuously pings your location to Google, and it's receiving info of where your friends are, so yes, it's a battery hog.

I honestly believe that's not the problem, especially with hundreds of emails coming through my phone a day. I never had such a drastic battery drain from this feature on another android device (e.g. Nexus One)... I believe it may be linked to either a software bug or hardware issue (I'm assuming Samsung GPS takes up more time and power to acquire the same lock vs an HTC device).
Anyone know of a way to tweak Latitude's GPS refresh rate? I'd like to raise it's minimum to like 30/45min. Or I want to figure out why it's keeping the phone awake 1-3hrs in a single day.
disable location history and auto checkin ...mine doesn't seem to take up as much power after i did that
yeah, there's a bug report if you google. latitude is not that battery hungry on my previous HTC Magic.

remember when you are signed in to latitude, it does not use the GPS in the background, it only approximates your location from the nearest cell site. when you actually go into maps and into latitude is when it pinpoints your precise location with GPS. soon as you minimize it, the GPS turns off and it goes back to approximating location again.
i cant use latitude in this condition
can u link the bug report please?

1+.
I'm on second Nexus S. I didn't have Latitude enabled on my previous Nexus S. Battery used to last me a day.
On second one, I enabled Latitude and it would last about 5 hours. I didn't think Latitude was problem.. though I should disable after weeks of usage. Then I get about 15 hours with mild usage.
Yea I've stopped using latitude... only manually refreshing it then disabling it every now and then. It was fine on my Nexus One so I don't know why it's such a huge hog on the Nexus S. I submitted a bug report to google a few days after release...
Same issue on my NS when using Latitude as well. I'm wondering if it has something to do with Samsung's GPS functionality as there has notoriously been issues with it with their Galaxy S phones.
Just when I thought I do not have this issue anymore, yesterday Maps was using 70% of my battery, and I saw that it kept my phone awake for 7 hours of my 15 hours period!
I have rebooted my phone and now Maps seems to be at a normal 20% battery usage (still not normal if compared to latitude being enabled on my old HTC Magic).
Really need latitude....
enable latitude always kills your battery life
but set to never sleep in wifi advanced settings will definitely reduce the battery leeching
I hate resurrecting old threads, but there is an alternative to latitude.
Search for altitude, by the same dev that put out betterbatterystats.
It allows you change the refresh on latitude, and how coarse/fine you want it to locate you.
Definitely reduces the resource drain.
I just never open latitude. Till this day its never been open.

Try it. Not everybody has the issue.
Actually on that bombshell, Latitude uses very little power when I don't travel and lots when I do, as I expect. The refresh rate depends on how much I move about. Newer versions of Google Maps has tended to use more power than older versions but the update last week has helped.
I don't have any real reason to use Latitude most of the time, other than I can, but my wife uses it to not call me to see where I am. I wonder if the power saved through no call makes up for the drain..?

[Q] Is anyone having GPS problems?

I like my N4 alright so far. I am having a problem with the GPS, though. It takes a long time to lock in on my location. I'm just checking in Maps, and it seriously takes 30 seconds for the GPS to lock on. Once it does lock on it's solid, but the time it takes to pinpoint my location is disappointing. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, are there any possible solutions for this problem? Do you think I could get a warranty replacement for it, even though the GPS locks on eventually?
I did a factory reset and it locks on a little faster now (~10s)
Well, I'm having the same issues again. I used GPS Status, and after 10 seconds I'm locked onto 3/18 satellites, 5/18 after 15 seconds, and 8/18 after 30 seconds. It's really annoying. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Hardware? Could it be solved through software? I've tried FasterGPS, and it doesn't really help. TIA
I always get an instant ~9m lock.

I don't have a gps fix issue but have a different question for those who have been driving around using their nexus.
I have been driving around using Google navigation (gps enabled) and music playing in the background on my Nexus 4. The odd thing is even though I have the usb car charger plugged in the battery continues to drain.
I went and bought a usb charger that supports 2.1 amp charging thinking it might be the old usb car charger not powerful enough but, nope, the battery continues to drain with the 2.1 amp charger.
Something I did notice is that with a 2.1 amp charger is that the phone drains much slower (minus 1% every 25 minutes) and if I turn off the gps the phone actually charges normally like when it's plugged into a wall socket.
When I was on my iphone 4 I could listen to music, use a tomtom app while charging my phone. At the same time. Why does the nexus 4 use so much power with the gps turned on?
Is everyone experiencing this? if not which car charger do you use?

That's pretty much a maximum-drain scenario, with both the GPS and cell radios going and (during the day, at least) the screen brightness very high. I haven't done a lot of experimenting, but I looked at my battery graph after about a 20-minute trip with GPS and Pandora going, and that time showed an essentially horizontal, but squiggly, line -- my battery was at 80% at the beginning and the end. (It does charge when I'm not using navigation, though.)
I've had a similar scenario with previous phones. Generally speaking, when I'm using navigation, there are significant times when nothing is happening ("Stay on Route XXX for 21 miles"), so I turn off the display during those intervals to let the battery charge. I still get the voice prompt in time to turn the screen back on to see my next turn, so it's not a big loss.
Battery should charge regardless. Is your charger showing up as USB? Many car chargers are optimized for apple standard and only give 500ma to other devices. It is a quick and easy mod to fix it though just need to solder 2 pins together, plenty of tutorials online and discussion under any charger on amazon.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Turning off the screen sounds like a good idea, I will try and see if it improves. Been reading around lots and this seems to be the only solution. Just glad this isn't due to a bug or a defect unit.
Extra information: the 2.1 amp usb car charger when plugged into my phone shows AC charging mode.

I found a solution for my battery draining while using gps problem. The reason seems to be related to the data cable that is supplied with the phone. I bought an off market micro usb cable from eBay and when I used that in my car, whilst using google navigation, the phone charges up as normal.
I hope this help others too.

GPS working perfectly here. Even the very first fix on the very first day happened in <5 sec.
My GPS is terrible. It's been 4 minutes and still nothing. I'm using an app and see that i'm bouncing between 3 and 4 satellite fixes, but you need 6 to be locked on. the signal is also very low for all the satellites.
Could it be that I'm in Taiwan?
I've posted on another forum about this issue, but I didn't see this one until now. I had problems with GPS right away when I got my N4 on 12/10, so I did an RMA and got another Nexus 4 yesterday. New one's GPS is much better. (It has another problem...its volume rocker is wiggly and wobbly! I'll live with it). However, the first N4 seemed to do better yesterday than it had in the 10 days before. I have no idea why....there were no "fixes" put on or anything that would make it work better. Anyway, it sounds like some of you might have defective ones, and maybe you should RMA it. Just be prepared to possibly have a different problem when you get a new one!

Why is it suddenly draining?

As you can see I've got hardly any screen on time. Location services, GPS, sync and everything were off. Data off. WiFi on but had strong signal entire day. Battery saver on. Not rooted, full stock. Any ideas on why it suddenly started draining? I've been getting much better life than this. After 18 hours of this kind of usage I usually have 50+ percent left.

CarrierIQ! You probably have it enabled. Given that your screenshots say AT&T, this is most likely the culprit. Disable it and your battery issues should go away.

I don't have that issue. My Google Play Services only takes up 2% of my battery. But its a known issue that if you have an AT&T phone, chances are you accepted everything when you first setup the phone and opted into CarrierIQ.
For the OP, his screenshots don't see Google Play Services as a battery drainer. I am pretty sure it is CarrierIQ draining his battery especially if he has GPS enabled all the time.
Battery usage was included in screenshots.
Carrier IQ uses that much battery? User has to opt in to it?
Guess an FDR is in order to opt out this time. Save you stuff to your PC or cloud first.

User opts in when they have a pop up window asking if they can collect locations statistics and send it back to Google or whatever for assisting in resolving issues. I don't have AT&T so I don't have the exact popup handy. I just know that Tmobile has an setting in Options to disable CarrierIQ.
I don't have GPS on ever. And I can't find carrierIQ anywhere. I'm not familiar with it.

Wouldnt that be a wakelock issue? look his cell standby takes up the most of his battery... check out GASM battery so you can know what to disable to save battery
Google Play Services has been killing me over the past few days and there have been a LOT of reports of others having the same issue across multiple devices. Today Google Play Services has taken up 37% with 14 hours of wakelock. Absolutely ridiculous.
No one has been able to figure out why.
I have an ATT D800 and just started experiencing this in the last few days. I already had disabled CIQ (checker says it exists but is disabled).
It may be the google play services issue and I just finished disabling those and charging to 100%. We shall see.
I took these things off, and got great batterylife after that:good: It should help for google play services battery drain..but report back if it works or not.

I think there's an issue with WiFi on the D800. If I leave my setup the same as when on LTE, but turn on WiFi instead, I get a nice steady battery drain. I have compared BBS stats to when I'm on LTE and I don't see anything different. No wakelock keeping the phone on. Deep sleep is similar, etc.
Found the culprit. Battle Dragons, a game, was keeping the phone awake. Better battery stats showed it was never letting the phone sleep. Getting normal life now that I've uninstalled BD. No clue why it was waking it though, I stopped the app.
