[Poll] Can your Nexus S get a GPS lock? - Nexus S General

Got at Best Buy at 7:30. Got my Nexus S. It was so sick. Til the GPS wouldn't get a lock. GenieWidget couldn't get wireless location either. Using T-Mobile. Nexus One locked just fine.
Also the demo phone didn't seem to be having issues so I got an exchange. This one doesn't work either. Who here can get a lock on their GPS?

I can't get a GPS lock either.

I GOTTT IT!!! GPS lock with 9 meter accuracy!!
I left the app open for a min then I force closed it then restarted the phone and now works like a champ!!!!

Mine locked to 7 sats in 5 seconds on the first try while inside. Walked into the back yard and got 11 sats, accuracy down to 5m.

Still not working.

I am getting one hollow green dot using that app after following instructions.

maybe the satellites are down where you are, lol

I tested mine.
The globe star should be the icon and is it solid means it's locked in?
If so, I got mine locked in in about 15-20 seconds (Bay Parkway and 69th Street, Brooklyn).

I got a lock immediately even in a GPRS area.

****. . What's with bad luck with phones. I think GPS is defected on mine. I tried it outdoor and it only saw 2 without locking of course

Then uh why does GPS work on my Nexus One and my Vibrant?

I tested my Nexus S (T-Mobile) side by side with my Incredible (Verizon) and they both locked fairly quickly onto GPS. Repeated the test in a few different locations yesterday and today, and the Nexus S did well, as did the Inicredible.
Indoors with GPS off (and Wifi off) is a different story. The Incredible will show my approximate location in Google Maps, whereas the Nexus says "Waiting for location" then after a while "Your current location is unavailable". I guess the Nexus S can't use the cell towers to get a fix .

5-6 sats locked in under 15 seconds indoors. 11 locked within 30 seconds, but I haven't tried with no wifi or cell for aGPS assist.
Try getting the app GPS Status & Toolbox from the Market...it will download the GPS almanac and give the phone a better initial starting point for cold starts.

I have both Network Towers and GPS turned on and I always have a tiny blue circle around my position. With my Nexus One, the blue circle disappeared and had I had perfect lock
Even then though, the Nexus S is a bit slow at properly figuring out where I am, especially during Navigation. The GPS functionality is below the Nexus One.

Immediate lock.

Pretty heavy rain here in Los Angeles last night. GPS took a little longer to lock up on my way to dinner, but still locked position within a 60-90 seconds. Funny thing was that it reported accuracy of only 1300m the whole drive, but the position displayed on the map was 100% spot on to my actual location.
The Galaxy S line came out with HORRIBLE GPS, it was unusable and became a fixation for hatred of the device for many. As newer firmwares came out, it improved dramatically and I have no complaints with it on my SGS now. My friend with a T-Mobile Vibrant has stopped using his and gone back to an iPhone 3G because of the lousy GPS on it.
Samsung has supposedly changed the antenna for GPS and WiFi from the one used in older Galaxy S devices; I think it's remarkably improved.

Are you on stock? Can you usually get a gps signal where you are? I had immense issues with gps on my epic but have had none on the nexus unless I'm in my house.

there are a few GPS that is available in my region, A-GPS, papago, Garmin, etc etc
shouldnt there be difference among these GPS? or are they all sharing the same satellite?

I am running stock in AK and have only had issues in concrete buildings. Locks on in less than 5 seconds in my house and while driving.

My Nexus S' gps reception and accuracy is noticeably inferior to my Nexus One. The difference is very obvious indoors, my Nexus S will struggle to even detect satellites while my Nexus One can get a fix fairly quickly.
When I'm outside the house, my Nexus S can get a fix, but it gets the fix slower than my Nexus One by probably 10 seconds. Subsequent fixes will be almost instant though. If I don't use the GPS for a while, the first fix will take longer again.
The Nexus S will usually get 10m accuracy, and it sometimes jumps between 10m and 30m accuracy. I rarely get 5m accuracy with it. On the Nexus One, I consistently get between 1 to 3m accuracy.

Yes, they all share the same satellites. I believe the US GPS sats are the only ones currently covering the globe, but Russia has some supplemental satellites that cover their area.
You're confusing brands of devices and technologies and GPS all at the same time.
GPS is the 24 global positioning satellites ran by the US military. They provide the radio signals that all GPS receivers/navigators use.
Garmin, Magellan, etc are brands of devices that intercept and interpret those signals to give you your position.
A-GPS is "assisted" GPS in cell phones, where the phone can use the cellular network tower location information to "assist" the GPS in figuring out where it is if it's having trouble finding the satellites or hasn't locked onto them yet.
The difference in performance, in my opinion, is primarily antenna design and bad software in non-dedicated devices like our smartphones.

Totally agree. N1 had awesome GPS. It would lock on very quick and the position indicated onscreen corresponded to your actual position. I was hoping the GPS issues would be sorted out by samsung by now, but I guess not
thanks for all the inpit
what is the average lock time? i never use GPS device before
is it below 10 seconds?
I'm using GPS status app, but also it happened to me with all the LBS apps .... I used to live in Bogotá and it took 10 to 20 seconds to find the signal. But now here I'm in London and it never find the signal so I can't determine my location ....any idea of what's happening or how to fix it?
Thanks

4.1.83 GPS problems

I've checked around for GPS problems and I wasn't able to find anything in search for this on the Atrix. The problem is after updating to 4.1.83 I can't lock on any Satellites, anyone else have this issue?
Same for me. Takes just a bit longer to catch some sats. Idk. Ill keep testing it tho.

Atrix GPS vs Aria
I noticed that the GPS doesn't utilize all the available satellites sometimes. I used GPS test on my Aria and compared it with the Atrix.
The Aria picks up the satellites faster, gets a more consistent accuracy and is more accurate than the Atrix.
The Atrix GPS sometimes utilizes 12 satellites and still doesn't have the accuracy the Aria has =[
I noticed that during GPS test the signal usually needs 30+, around 40 to get a real good accuracy, which is something the Aria can do, but the Atrix doesn't.
Note: I ran my test at separate times, minutes within each other and wiped data and forced stop so they start from cold. This way the two devices won't interfere with one anothers performance.
Well, I'm on 4.1.83 and I get a satellite lock in 15 seconds with AGPS and 40 seconds without it. There should be something wrong with your settings. Based on GPS Status data, the accuracy is 2 meters.

[Q] GPS - SGSII Vs. iPhone4

Hi,I read this review:http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_sensation_vs_galaxy_sii_vs_optimus_2x-review-608.php
I have HTC HD2.
I want to buy SGSII but I worry about the GPS on SGSII.
I mean to lock time and sensitivity tests.
I did a comparison with iPhone 4,and iPhone defeat my HD2 at lock time test.
Does SGSII have a better GPS receiver ?
Thanks.

Hi There,
not sure about the GPS hardware in the SGS2 but i have had an iPhone 4 and also a Desire HD, IMO i think the SGS2 is much quicker and more reliable at getting a lock, when im outside it takes less than 10secs to get an Exact lock. took a lot longer on DHD and iPhone 4
hope this helps !
P.S. SGSII is an amazing phone, best one out at the moment get it !
Are you running android on your HD2? A-GPS isn't properly working on the HD2 with android yet (see tytung's thread in the HD2 section) so the iphone would be faster.
I came from the HD2 to the SGS2 and the GPS seems to be great so far. Lock from cold in >10s and error is around 5m.
Watch out though, when I got my SGS2 the gps.conf file was set to north-america rather than uk (where I am). That'll make a difference to lock time.
I noticed that gps won't fix without a-gps, am i the only one?

Mine usually locks within 10-12 seconds outdoors/ clear sky even without AGPS.
However sometimes it will fail to lock even though GPS app show 5-7 satellites in view. If I then switch on a-gps it will get a lock most of the times.
However even with AGPS on, it has failed to lock on 3-4 occasions (~2 months usage)! After trying for over 5 minutes, I rebooted the phone and all was fine and dandy!
Just tried mine, it took 29 seconds with a-gps disabled, no wifi help or anything.
Tested cold boot a few roms ago .
Cold boot 4mins and 8 sats with 45 feet .No Wifi No Mobile Towers .
Subsequent lock on are lightning fast .
Only tool used is to change gps.conf to a local time server via faster fix .
Tests using my tracks show much better than SGS1 .

Ive used the gps on this phone half a dozen times with Google maps and every time is locked in under 5 seconds. Accurate to 10 meters.

People might believe this after the SGS effort but the GPS works ok. It kills the battery at about 1 percent a minute and turns the thing into a nice heater, which will come in handy in the winter, so it's a shame its the summer. At least it works and is a step in the right direction. YAY.
Just a quick note: SGS2 has a beast GPS. It locks in less than 10 seconds outside.
The gps on this phone locks in 6 seconds when I'm inside a building. No BS. Using google maps.

Mine work perfectly. I live in a village and have a very bad gsm signal with no 3G. In AirPlane mod and with A-GPS it's normaly starts in 10-20 seconds. Sometimes at home near window it takes 30-50 seconds.

Mine locks in under 20sec....and certainly does not drain the battery at 1% per min....I lost about 25% battery after 1hr10 mins today.
I am on Cognition Rom, so not sure if that makes a difference.

[Q] Verizon G2 GPS Performance

How is everybody's GPS performance? Mine seems to be taking longer than I'm used to on my S3 to get a lock (30+ seconds). Even getting the latest aGPS data using GPS Status didn't seem to help much. It is definitely not snapping in instantly like I'm used to. Curious to hear what others have observed.

Hmm okay thanks for the response. It seems like I get my lock within 10-15 seconds now, but still much slower than my S3 (2-3 sec max). How is everyone's accuracy when lock is achieved? Mine is serviceable, but it did get roads messed up a few times when GPS signal lost while using navigation.

Almost the same thing I have experienced also. I Used the Go Home in Navigation and it was off by a few blocks.
Also when starting from a reset it does take 2-5 minutes to get a lock. Not only was the S3 almost instant, but it also grabbed more sats.
S3 (15/20 locks) G2 ( 8/20) using GPS status. Side by side comps
Also noticing some pretty big choppiness trying to scroll if I pull up a site like phone dog using the stock chrome browser. Other than the browser this thing is extremely snappy.
my first time took like 5 minutes..so i refreshed agps, and it eventually locked. now it locks pretty quick and i get my usual 10-16ft accuracy like my other phones

G2 Degrading GPS performance

My GPS performance has been slowly getting worse and worse and I can't figure out why.
When I got the phone it would lock on to *at least* 10 out of 20+ satellites within seconds and maintain high accuracy. Over time, it's taken longer and longer to lock, uses fewer and fewer birds when it does (I'm lucky to see 6/12 most times), and loses position more easily.
I do an AGPS refresh regularly, tried it with several different app (my main one is GPS Status Unlocked), but it doesn't help. I recently received the OTA update to Kit Kat, but it made no difference either way.
Just fired up GPS Status and it shows 0/18 satellites... trying and trying but that's it. Meanwhile, just started GPS Status on my wife's Galaxy Tab 10.1, and it instantly shows 16/16. (Ooooh, and now the G2 is at 1/16).
I thought maybe the Otterbox was affecting reception but removing it makes zero difference as well.

This is a recognised issued of LG G2. In this section there is a topic who deals about GPS issues. Search for it
I did search. Got either excessive unrelated hits because the search was too broad, or nothing at all when I narrowed it down. In fact, I've searched on multiple occasions with similar non-results.
So perhaps just a link to the appropriate thread wouldn't be too much to ask.

I have similar issue. At first (on stock JB) it locked in no time with great accuracy. Now on cloudypro 2.1 I have to wait for gps lock like forever (in some apps it's really fast, but for example in google maps it doesnt even get fix sometimes).
Currently I got position error shown in GPS status from 7 to 20-30m. Often speed isn't shown and when I'm not moving it shows ~5-6km/h. My father had SGS+ and from what I remember it had factory fault when due to temperature gps antenna seperated from glue and caused lack in performance. Maybe it is the same with our LG?
I dont know what's the cause, but I intend to go back to JB and see if it's gonna be any help.
