[Q] "Google Services" app suddenly started using unusually high background data
Please see the attached screenshots of data usage for the past three weeks. Two weeks ago I noticed a steep increase in the amount of background data used by Google Services, from the usual 1 ~ 2MB per week to something as high as 16MB per week. From what I can tell using 3G Watchdog, the majority is outbound traffic. I'm a light data user, only turning on 3G when I'm in transit for 2 hours a day to check email and chat on Hangouts. I don't recall changing anything significant on my phone in that period, aside from app updates and upgrading to 4.3 on the 24th. I'm on a light data plan, with only 100MB monthly quota, so this increase is very significant for me. Right now I have the restrict background data option enabled for Google Services to try to curb this new problem, but I'd still like to know what's going on.
to be honest, that usage is very normal, and still considered not much. anything can cause it to go up this little, yes it only went up a tiny bit. your usage, syncing, background notification checks.. id suggest more that 100mb for any smartphone as 100mb isnt really realistic for a smartphone.

Yes, it went up a tiny bit in absolute terms, but relatively this is huge. We're talking about 1000% of what was normal for that app, without change in my usage pattern. I hear you though. 100MB a month is crazy low these days, but for what I use my phone for, it had been more than enough for the past 7 months that I've had the phone. I usually end up with 20 ~ 30MB to spare every month.

20-30mb to spare? really?
yea, in relative terms, it is a huge difference. i average about 250-350mb per day, id never servive with only 100mb.

Haha, yeah, my friends on unlimited data couldn't believe it either when I told them I survived on 100mb. They use that up streaming a short youtube video. I'm in wifi range for most of the day. When I'm not, I keep it to emails, text chats, and the occasional live transit locator. On the rare occasion when I do browse the web on the go, I use Opera Mini to compress the traffic. It's definitely doable :silly:
I have the same problem as the OP, only my data usage is 450MB in under an hour. This has never used more than 2-3MB per day in all the time I've had an Android phone. I didn't even realize it till I got a message from my service provider saying I have used 80% of my monthly limit. :crying:
On checking data usage, I found the culprit to be Google Services, under which I see Play Services, Services Framework, Account Manager, Contacts Sync, Network Location and Bookmarks Sync. Is there anyway I can find out which of these 6 caused the data download?
My location access is disabled, and so is my App update over mobile data. My gmail and contacts sync are enabled, but I doubt if that would take 450Mb.
I have now restricted background data, but I sure would like to know the reason for this sudden spurt in data usage.
TIA
Some people are reporting around 180Mb/day data wasted by Google Services since 4.3 OTA was launched. Remember the size of the 4.3 OTA update is exactly 179Mb. MOST (if not all) the affected are using custom ROMs.
Can it be the cause? Maybe the OTA is being downloading again and again but it can't finish the installation process due some reason, possibly related with custom ROMs / Kernels / whatever.

I am using Carbon ROM, but I don't have any notification for any update...besides I thought OTA update will be a foreground process?

I don't know, but probably yes according to these people wasting data since OTA was released.

I'm on stock everything, although I did manually flash 4.3. If it's downloading the OTA repeatedly, then it's doing it really slowly for me (like 2MB/hour). That's an interesting theory though.

who's reporting? may you please refer me to it?
my case appears to be the worst among the bunch: Google Services used 4.4 GBs of data since the 27th
I'm on a cm10.1 nightly on a galaxy nexus and over the last 2 days google services has eaten 300+mb of data (approx 180 the first day then 120 the second until I hit my limit). The 4.3 OTA may very well be causing this problem.
Is this a widespread problem? How can we fix it?

Carbon rom here. Same issue. Massive google services data usage in last few days. Like 600mb + a day.
What is going on?

******* I'm having the exact same problem! my phone has used almost 500mb in the past day and now I only realised when my data provider sent me a warning message!
just lost 735MB in 3 days! nexus 4 CM 10.1.0-RC2
that's gonna cost me...
Just an update on my phone's situation:
Yesterday I flashed the phone back to stock 4.2.2 (including userdata, so everything was wiped), then upgraded to stock 4.3 again using the Google update service this time (I manually flashed 4.3 last time). I then did a factory reset and wiped cache. Initially the "Android OS" app ate up 6MB of 3G data in an hour without me using the phone at all, but all data usage is now back to normal after I turned off wifi network location service. I'm not entirely sure what did the trick, but I backed up and restored all my apps after the wipe using Titanium, so it's unlikely that a third party app was the culprit. I'll keep an eye out to see if the problem does come back, but for now it seems to be fixed. Not sure how this would help those of you running CM rom.
System Update Issue
I've noticed this same issue since i updated all my Google Play applications last 07/30. Before the update, I did not have this high bandwidth consumption.
Anyways, i've been researching in my phone and tried the following solutions:
First, I restricted Google Services background data, this did not work, it was still consuming my data. So I kept researching and found something interesting, i went to About Phone - System Update, and noticed my phone was consistently trying to update to 4.3 JB (which is 183 MB), and after the download was complete, then a "verification failed" error message was displayed.
At this point, i thought, This is probably the cause i've been losing all of my data. I am running ParanAndroid along with franco kernel for some time, maybe this is the reason the update is failing.
So, a rough solution i did to this meanwhile: Go to Settings -> Apps -> All and disable Google Services Framework, this will ensure that the update is not constantly being downloaded, however, many Google applications will have issues.
Try switching off Wifi and Mobile network location in the settings.

Indeed it all started on 30th for me too. A fix would be lovely! wonder if the latest CM10.1 nightlies have this problem

I just checked the system updates tab in my settings and it keeps redownloading 4.3 due to it not being able to install correctly. It is redownloading the rom again and again. Does anyone know how to disable the OTA?

Hi
I have g1 with rc30 and jf (i dont remember the version). I installed on my phone netmeter and after 12h of sleeping my g1 downloaded 100mb by it self.
Is there any app that will show which program download so much stuff?
tuen off Auto-Sync in your settings Home>Menu>Settings>Data syncronization>tuen off different things to use less data
I don't thing it's Auto-Sync ... I haven't turned off my G1 for about 2 Weeks now and its alway online and my Netmeter just says something about 100MB ...
so, I think it must be one special program, but which one it is ... sry, don't now ...
I use app that os caled APNdroid
It cuts of GPRS UMTS 3G/2G conection when you press it and do not allow you G1 to go to internet via carrier of you SIM.
You press it agin and it goes back to normal.
It's good becase U can still have SYNC activate3d all the time.
Yeap, it will disconnect you, but when you go back online then it resume downloads .. so this just delay download a bit but not solve the issuse.
Do you have root access, and terminal? Then you can use the 'dh' and 'du' commando to view wich dirs/files are the biggest. maybe you can find a dir that grows larger every hour, then you have to find out wich program uses that dir (or maybe it's just the dirname ).
Hope you find it!

100mb in just 12 hours? Wow!
Let's see... assuming it was an exact 100mb (which I'm sure it's not but just for fun)
8533kb /hr
142kb /min
2.37kb /sec
So I guess the question is... is it unreasonable for your G1 to download about 2.5kb a second? This phone has been very problamatic for users going over seas because they would return home to find a several hundred dollar bill in the mail for roaming data fees Example. I can see how. I must say that I'm a bit curious myself now. I think I'll install the program on my phone to see what I get.
I admit that it does sound like a lot but when you break it down you can't really be too surprised. Especially when you consider that even while your phone is sleeping you could be receiving pings which is 32 bytes each. I'm not sure how many times the G1 sends a ping but I suppose it could add up during 12 hours. Also, it doesn't help if you have IM and other apps in the background. Some of which you don't (or may not) even realize. Latitude is not something that you use very often but if you set it up then it sends updates to Google of your location. If you receive an e-mail in the 12 hours of inactivity. The market is frequently checking for updates to some of the apps that you have stored. Then just a few apps that I personally have installed but not running actively are the JF Updater beta, Locale, Loopt, a RSS app, weatherbug, an android tracking app, IM, caller id app, Earthquake!, just to name a few. Would it be unreasonable for my phone to use 2.5kb a second?
I'll install it myself and let you know tomorrow morning. I'm not in a 3G area right now but I'm curious to see how much I use myself. If it's less then you then I think you might have a problem because I'm a heavy user.
UPDATE
So in just 4 hours with my phone doing absolutely nothing and with Netmeter installed my phone has downloaded exactly 200kb. However this is on an Edge network.
I'm starting to think that you may have a problem. Because obviously at this rate I would have only downloaded 600kb during 12 hours which is no where near what you have experienced. I am not running anything at all in the background except the normal RC33 apps, Craigslist, Where's My Android, Netmeeter, Quick Calender, Missed Call, Weatherbug (all of this came from Task Manager). On Netmeeter it reads that locale is also running but only contributes to .2% of network traffic. 32.8% is from "system_server" and 16.5% is from com.google.android.netmeter.
Bottom line... something is not right with your phone. Perhaps it is downloading an update of some kind?
its end of the day and i have 200 downloaded.
the problem is only with 3g network. when my wifi is turned on it doesnt downloading so much stuff.
I deleted all apps that i installed only netmeter is on the phone now.
we will see
apndroid works changing the apn settings of the phone making it impossible to the phone to establish any new conection through 3g/2g until you let it. So you will be ok with it.
xsoft = noob!
I just had the same problem in the last two days, with RC8-JF. Downloaded 300MB for no apparent reason.
I found out that gapps is constantly downloading a 20MB update from google. It tried to apply it after downloading, fails due to missing otrcerts (because JF has removed it to prevent the update), and retries the whole download.
I suggest you run tcpdump on the phone and see if that's the case with your phone too. If yes, updating to the latest JF version should stop it. Otherwise it's hard to block these downloads. The gapps process does a lot of other things with google's servers so you can't just filter it through iptables.
I had the samme problem, my phone would not stop downloading, every couble of hours it would download about 20mb.
The solution was to update to the new JF 1.43 RC9, I used JF 1.41 RC8 before.
I updated my g1 to rc33 and all is ok
Hi All,
This is my first post on XDA and I hope that I'm posting in the right place!
I have a Nexus 4, 4.4.2 which has never been rooted. For what it's worth, I've always run AV software (Lookout from day 1, subsequently Kaspersky) and only downloaded from the Play Store. (I have always had 'Unknown Sources' unticked). I'm pretty careful with permissions.
In hindsight (a wonderful thing) things started shortly after one of the Kitkat OTA updates. Not absolutely sure which…
One evening, my lock screen clock suddenly showed my time as 3 hours ahead (i.e. Moscow: I'm in the UK) along with a rectangle giving my home time zone time. I googled the symptoms and it seemed widely reported so I just put it down to an update bug and carried on.
However, I've recently been having large, unexplained, data spikes in seemingly innocuous programs. Specifically, I had a 6GB spike attributed to Opensignal. I uninstalled Opensignal, but the data use continued, albeit on a smaller scale, reported in Data Usage as 'Removed Apps'. This was definitely data use *after* the program was removed: I altered the sliders to focus on the time after uninstall.
To be on the safe side, I gritted my teeth and performed a factory reset and altered my important passwords.
However, this is happening again.
'Removed App' data use has started increasing once more and have just had another large data spike attributed to, of all things, Kaspersky. Over 600MB in a day. All data is now turned off, but possibly too late?
Do I have to assume that the phone is well and truly hacked? If so, am I going to have to unlock and root the phone and side load a factory image from Google, or is there an easier route?
Many thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Edward.

I know you probably isn't going to like this, but for the most part, apps like Kaspersky and lookout does a lot of phoning home, thus use a lot of data. Some will say they are useless, but that's a judgment call. I have tried them but usually end up getting rid of them.
I don't know OpenSignal so I can't really speak on it. What's it used for?

no silly Malware are for Windows. You said Kaspersky? lol.... anyway seems like an app issue. I always enable > set mobile data limit to certain MB / GB. Try checking other apps aswell like (Google Plus, Facebook) disable auto photo sync.
To Factory Reset:
1. Backup your files from your sd card.
2. Download Nexus 4 4.4.2 (KOT49H) image from here.
3. Extract it using Winrar or 7zip.
4. Connect the Nexus 4 to your computer and run *Flash-all.bat*
5. Let it do its magic.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Opensignal is a crowd-sourced mobile/wifi signal mapping app.
Can't post a link yet (only 1 post!) but if you Google it... Had it installed for ages and didn't use more than a few kB a day, as one would expect.
Really think it's something deeper than this, because programs are continuing to use data after uninstall and, although AV programs use a fair bit of data, half a gig for just definition updates seems silly.
Cheers.

My suggestion would be to wipe your dalvik, cache and at the extreme your data, but you're not rooted.
The AV app(s) does a lot more than check for definition updates. They also check out the websites that you visit as well. That could account for the data used.
I'm not aware of an app that could wipe the mentioned partitions without root. Maybe someone else might know?

I was wondering if this is a common issue when installing a new ROM. I recently flashed the N5 experience ROM V4.2.1 Stock Kernel with LTE. I have no stability issues whatsoever but my Google Plus application is using a ridiculous amount of WiFi Data in the background. I'm not concerned about using it but I am concerned about my battery life. I am assuming this is from uploading pictures but I don't understand why it would try to upload duplicates. I never noticed in the past about this problem because there were no indicators on the UI about WiFi usage unless you pulled down the settings menu and looked at the tiles to see up and down data indicators. Is this problem normal after doing a wipe/factory reset? I have a screen shot that I will post as well.

You could always turn off auto backup. It's not uploading duplicates (unless you actually see duplicates), but it will sync. That could be the problem.

So you're thinking it's just syncing my Google+ feed then? I do like the auto upload feature that it gives you because I have access from any device via my Google account. I think I might just wait and see what happens over the course of the next few days and then evaluate if it is still using a high amount of WiFi data. If it was just an initial install thing it shouldn't affect anything in the coming days. Thanks for the reply!

If you are really active and take a lot of pictures, the more data G+ will use. As long as you are using wifi, it shouldn't be a problem.

The issue started in late march or april. In the period between Feb 22 and Mar 21 Android OS used 893kb of data. The following month it was 1.01 GB, then 1.7 GB. Now I have turned off mobile data completely after having Android OS suck 153 MB of my 1 GB monthly allowance just after 2 days (while mostly being on wifi).
I have found quite a lot of threads regarding this, but none of the solutions worked for me so far.
I have tried disabling google backup
I tried enabling android's data saving option
I have no automatic wallpaper switch, which could be using data (I change them maybe once a week)
I deleted all apps that I don't need. Most have their own placeholder on the data usage screen and are using normal amounts of data. The problem is, I don't see which of the services under Android OS are using the data, so I have no idea really.
The following services are listed under Android OS in the native data usage app:
com.quicinc.cne.CNEService.CNESeviceApp (this one is on the top bar)
Android System, Call Management, Settings Storage, Nfc Service, HwMMITest, Input Devices, Key Chain, com.android.wallpaperbackup, com.android.huawei.hiddenmenu.main.HiddenMenuApp, Fused Location, com.qualcomm.timeservice, Call Management, Settings
Any ideas?

I've heard that this governor profile helps if you load it in ex kernel manager. https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/kernel-profile-interactive-governor-t3550620

I am running stock Android, just rooted. I would love to avoid the hassle of flashing new kernels, etc.
The battery drain is not that bad at all. I just can't keep my 3G on, or else it will drain my data in a few days (or rather hours of non-wifi time).
I got a 700MB drain in TWO HOURS the other day. TWO HOURS!!!
Halp,plz.
Not much to say.
Factory reset.
Do not restore your apps.
See if it helps.
Did you try any of the data usage monitoring apps from the playstore?
Is anyone having serious battery drain? If so is there a fix for it!!
Not here...
Full charge at 9:00pm and by 6:00am I only see 3% drop, I don't call it a drain
(no root, latest Android Q update, location on, cell data on, bluetooth and NFC off)
Yes there is definitely higher drain on Android 10 overall.
Currently I am on AOSiP10 and getting 3-4% idle drain and about 2-3 SOT less than on AICP Pie. My friend on Stock 10 @ZeroInfinity has noticed a higher drain than Pie as well.
I'm in the process of figuring out what is causing the higher drain.

No mine is about the same as with Pie (I haven't noticed any difference ... apart from once when I ran it right down I only got about 8hrs of sot (screen on time whereas on pie I'd get about 9 but it wasn't scientific not sure if I had the exact same settings).
Is an app showing high battery usage (Also use hamburger menu to show full system usage which incl standby)(might even be worth also looking at memory usage for each app under developer settings, if nothing stands out under battery for some reason). If very high usage suddenly maybe an app conflict with latest update. Or possibly even a crypto miner or some other malware. You can also check battery usage when booted into safe mode so no third party apps run.
only got around 2 to 3 hours sot after updating to Android 10

Custom is always better than stock on this phone.
Wait for the AOSP ROMs to arrive and you will be able to easily get double that SOT time!

I did notice somewhat higher drain on A10, but not too much to worry about. My SOT on a single charge is usually about 5+ hours. Full stock, rooted. I am using WiFi Automatic to disable WiFi when the phone is inactive, so that might be helping, not sure how much...
On AOSiP10 there is no wild battery drain.
My device sleeps like a baby.
My advice? Stay off stock Android 10 if at all possible!

Not trying to convince anybody, but I am quite happy on stock. I used to flash custom ROMs a lot, but there is always *something* that doesn't work properly. Could be camera, audio, bluetooth, calls, sensors, whatever... So, optimized stock always seems to work better for me. Especially considering that stock on PH-1 is essentially (no pun intended ) a clean Android, I see no reason to switch. But... To everyone their own.

something must be wrong, maybe old app dicta restored or similar?
The following is fairly normal for me with web browsing & social media (no gaming), I have background scanning set to off for both wifi & Bluetooth but do have an always on VPN as you can see (that battery drain is from other apps using the VPN, not just the VPN)

What optimizations are you using with Android 10?
I'm getting similar results just using Magisk modules: FDE.AI (plus liboemcrypto disabler for on-demand apps and updates).
Also, my phone was ported from Sprint to T-Mobile and I've only recently got a better grip on changing tower conditions with this APN guide from T-Mobile. I had redundant APNs that may have been slowing connection to changing conditions while in motion or changing towers. Support wasn't much help anytime I called. Vacationing in a rural area with limited and slow data had me looking for a better solution. Even better than before coming back home and surfing internet in a passenger car on the freeway. Deleting the redundant ones was key, I believe.

Actually, same here - I am using FDE.AI as well. I also use WiFi Automatic to turn off WiFi when the phone sleeps (IMO, it was a dumb move to remove that setting from Android). I am also shutting down Internet access with NetGuard to the apps that have no business with it, and limiting or removing location access to most of the apps.
On my previous devices I had to get rid of the OEM and carrier bloat, but PH-1 is using basically a clean Android, making it much leaner...

I haven't tried WiFi disabling in years (Juice Defender and profile apps) but I do limit apps' access to Internet with Adguard (unlocked licensed version).
I'll give the WiFi Automatic app a try and see how that goes. I have little use for WiFi outside of those saved networks that auto connect.
Thanks for the reply and suggestion.

mine is just a bit weird on the battery usage. the Google play services is the highest usage on the battery but it just use running foreground for an hour. just want to clear the phone cache but it seems that it could not be cleared since my phone is not rooted

If you are sure it's play services you can just go to apps, find it & then go to "storage & cache" and clear cache or if that doesn't work clear data. (you do not need to be rooted)
However I suspect it's more likely another app is the cause as some apps will use services like location that rely on Google play services which then shows high battryr use but it is these other apps that are actually the cause as they are requesting the service. If you can't work out which tureen on developer option and look under "running services" and "memory" watch hopefully will give you a clue.
PS. You can boot to the recovery and wipe the whole cache partition from there

clearing data is the last method for me. if it is possible, i would not do it.
actually, the Google play services don't play to much, the battery just drain when the screen is on. however, i have tried to clear the cache of google play service before, it doesn't help.
there is an update today, just see whether it would improve it or not. would it be the issue of the battery indicator?
