[Q] install Android 4.3 modem, etc - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently at the running CyanogenMod 10.1, and I think I'm just going to wait until they release a 10.2 build. I am however interested in updating the rest of the firmware, without flashing the system
. Is this possible? Can I just download the factor image and edit it? Would deleting the system partition be enough?

When you download the factory image, it is a package with different parts in it. You will find the new bootloader and the new radio. Just extract what you want from the package and install them. If you are familiar with fastboot it is really easy. If you look around a bit you'll probably even find some flashable zips in this forum.
Edit: I looked for you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2361437

Installing CyanogenMod by using fastboot

Hello,
The home button of my device (Magic) does not work at all. So, I can not confirm to install the CyanogenMod in the recovery screen.
Am I able to install the ROM via fastboot? or does anybody has another suggestion?
Regards,
Omer
Yes, you can flash ROMs via fastboot, but you'll need a system and data img for the ROM, and I'm not aware of a method to package them up based on an update.zip.
I checked inside the archive and saw the images but there also some scripts need to run. That's why; I couldn't dare to flash.
Is there a method I can follow?

You don't need any scripts, just a system and data to flash.
fastboot flash data.img
fastboot flash system.img
You wont find these images inside the update.zip, the sys/data-imgs need to be created from the sys/data folders. Best bet is to ask someone to perform a nandroid backup, backup the imgs, wipe, flash cyan, send you those imgs, restore their old imgs.
Thank you. But, the someone's device should be identical to magic, right? I have dream also. So, I can use the nandroid backups of it. However; I don't think this would be possible. what do you think?

I'm really not sure, but I think the device would need to have the same size data and system partitions as the Magic, which the Dream doesn't.
Use mkyaffs2 to make the System and Data .img Files
What operating system do you have because if you have linux or a linux virtual machine you could extract the update zip and use the mkyaffs2 utility code.google.com/p/yaffs2utils/ to make the system and data images.
There is also a much easier program called yaffey http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645412 but it is windows only
So this thread is kind of old, but I stumbled upon it looking for stuff.
Im using a google galaxy nexus and have a strange issue where I cant connect it via usb when in a different state than fastboot mode. I replaced the usb port (flex cable) already, but it doesnt help (if you got any advice on that, please tell me)
What I actually want to say is that I can't install cyanogen from recovery because I can't connect my phone when in recovery, but I can flash firmware normally via bootloader, I tried that already, so how exactly do I get the images for cyanogen? Because I don't fully grasp it yet.

[NANDROID] Motorola Marshmallow Soak test v5 - Dec 13 - makes other phones jelleh!!

This is considered a beta rom. Things may break, things may change, and your phone may brick or turn into a portable toaster. I'm not responsible.
You are flashing this at your own risk!!!
This is a nandroid backed up from a US 2gb/16gb xt1540. It may or may not work on all models...that is to be determined.
Confirmed compatible variants:
XT1540 (US 1/8GB and 2/16GB) (Canada)
XT1541 (UK) (France)
(if your variant is not here it only means it's either not tested or not reported working. please test and report back!)
If you are unable to boot or obtain any signals after flashing this, it is highly recommended you flash a full factory image intended for your specific model and wait for another solution.
This is only meant to be a temporary fix while we wait for the big guys to build us a standard rom.
PLEASE READ THE GUIDE BELOW!!! Some things have changed with v3
How to install:
Extract the .tar.gz archive like any zip
copy the folder to the directory where your other TWRP nandroids are on your internal storage or sd card (TWRP/BACKUPS/ZZY222____/) in here you will see folders with dates, times, rom names and info, etc in the folder names...copy the folder you extracted to this directory.
boot to TWRP
restore this backup
if coming from anything but a previous soak test, wipe userdata
wipe cache and dalvik cache
flash systemless root zip SuperSU v2.61 (optional) DO NOT flash any lower SuperSU version!!
reboot (Please be patient...it's a VERY long wait. If you pass 10 minutes waiting and it hasn't booted, force a reboot by holding the power button)
profit!
***It is HIGHLY recommended US xt1540 users update their radio. It is not required to run this soak test, though. THIS IS ONLY FOR US USERS!!!!! DO NOT FLASH THIS IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!***
See this post for the updated soak test modem.img files (just flash to the modem partition with fastboot and reboot the device)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/201...-devs-moto-g3-xt1540-soak-test-files-t3255643
For anyone who is not in the contiguous USA (48 states) but still has xt1540 and would like to test the modem above, you can use the app linked below to back up your modem partition directly from your device before you try the new modem. This way you don't have to download a factory rom to get the right modem.img if you don't already have one backed up on your computer. You have to be rooted to use it.
Wanam Backup & Restore app (free)
How to root:
Please see this thread for the download:
http://www.xda-developers.com/update-to-snapprefs-xposed-module-includes-17-instagram-like-filters
The newest root method provided by chainfire does not touch the system partition. To the end-user, the only change is that when you flash a new kernel you must re-flash superSU....not your rom!!! What this means to us in this case is we can use the stock kernel provided with the soak test, flash the superSU zip, and have root, just like a Nexus device without having to wait for a permissive kernel!
*****After flashing the new systemless root zip you will be prompted to install superSU before the device reboots. DO NOT ALLOW IT TO INSTALL!!!!!! If you allow it to install with this option you will get a bootloop*****
**To view your device storage from your computer, open your notification shade, click the "USB for _____" notification, and select "transfer files (MTP)". It won't stick through a reboot, so you'll have to do this each time you boot.....the same thing goes if you unplug the cable.

Gonna try it on my xt1540. Just one question about the procedure. I just restore backup directly? Without wiping anything? Or should i wipe system at least?

TWRP wipes for you automatically in the restore process. You don't have to wipe system manually. Just restore wipe userdata and reboot!

you can extract with any of the popular file managers for android right on your phone if you'd like. It may take a little longer, but it will work.

Apparently it was just an issue with 7-zip, WinRAR handled it perfectly.
This is my first time making a flashable ROM but it should be up later today.

Z1C: First Custom-ROM

Hello,
my Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has the standard Android 5.1 version of Sony. Now I want to upgrade to a new Android version.
I need it for everyday-use and it should be relatively stable. The camera is not that important, but it should work. I use especially the browser, so the mobile datas should also work. Otherwise it should be only be stable and the battery should not discharge too fast. Is there any good build for me?
That one looks very interesting: AICP 7.1 ROM amami (I can't link the URL, because I am a new user )
Is it okay for a Custom-ROM beginner? I think I will find some instructions and tutorials how to install it. I just have to know if it is a good choice.
If there are any English mistakes, please correct me. I have to improve my English.
Thank you!

Thank you for your fast answer.
Is the camera completely unusable or just "not good"? I do not need the best quality, but it should at least work and you should be able to identify what the picture shows.
However, thank you for the link. I think I will try it. Android 6 is, I hope so, an improvement. Maybe I will then upgrade to Nougat.
There are no other options like Ubuntu Touch or Sailfish, right?

Put a piece of tape over your camera lens, and turn off the lights, and shake the phone back and forth while taking a picture... That's what most of the photos will look like.
No Sailfish, and @munjeni has built Ubuntu touch for Z1c, but I couldn't get the Internet to work, (except for Ubuntu store, which downloads apps fine). - https://mega.nz/#!YEpCHLoS!tRxZpJHUSKL_cZz9wisGZvWl7igYAlYJRjwbcT_s868 Besides that, fxp has built Firefox OS, but probably hard to find at this point, and there are a few MIUI builds out there that are very good. And how difficult is going back to the stock ROM and lock the bootloader againg, if nothing works?

One little question: if I unlock my bootloader, my complete internal storage is wiped, right?
But if my bootloader is locked, I can not use the nandroid-backup-function of TWRP, because I can not use the custom kernel to root my phone. (Am I right? )

You can root with locked bl, but your options are: 1) use Kingroot, (and it's generally preferred to not keep Kingroot, so after rooting you can replace Kingroot with SuperSU or wipe everything and flash a new rom with SuperSU), or 2) downgrade to KK and use doomlord rootkit, then flash LP prf.

Okay.
I would like to avoid using Kingroot and downgrade to 4.4 is not even better.
But I found the Sony-Flashtool "Emma" for Windows. It seems to be able to restore completely the Stock-5.1-ROM. So I think I don't need a whole nandroid-backup. Am I right?
So I will unlock my bootloader, flash the custom kernel using TWRP-Tool and have a rooted phone. Then I am able to flash any custom-ROM I want to try out.
Did I misunderstand anything?

True, Emma will restore you to stock. The backup would be if you want to restore the particular state of your phone right now.
Unlock bl, then flash the boot and recovery imgs, and you will be able to get into recovery. You'll want to have whatever rom you want to flash already downloaded on sdcard.
It works.
Now I have the AICP 12.1 7.1.2 Nightly Version.
Only the camera is not good, but better than expected. The aroma-GApps-package does not work, the GUI is hidden under the GUI of TWRP, but you can select your choice. However, after clicking install nothing was installed. After I downloaded and installed the super-GApps-package everything works fine.
If I find some issues, where can I report them? In the officiall AICP-12.1 N 7.1 amami Thread?
And at least a great thank you to levone1. :fingers-crossed:

Best Custom ROM for Z1C
Not to open a new thread, which Custom ROM would you guys recommend to install on my Z1C?
I'm having some issues atm. It keeps restarting; I did a factory reset, it worked well for a while, now the issue is back. However, it does seem to work fine when hooked up to my PC (with the PC Companion active). Before I start shopping for a new phone, I'd like to root it first.
For this purpose, I'd like to know whick custom ROM is the most stable that you would recommend I install. Also, I'd be very helpful if you could direct to a good guide about the entire process.
Thank you in advance, I appreciate it!

Thanks for the answer. Actually the whole story is, the phone belongs to my wife and she is neither techsavvy nor has patience with electronics, especially when any problem come up. I would like to remove bloatwares and have backup yet keep the phone as Stock as possible. I'm trying to keep my ROM related modifications at minimum. That's been said, I would welcome any correction on this manner as I feel you found returning the stock kernel is pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless, but for the most part, any custom kernel is an improvement. Most of the customizations wouldn't mean anything to someone like that, but I doubt there's any harm or risk in keeping it.

OTA update ZIP packages for Lenovo Z6 Pro

So the version of the firmware I have is 11.0.054 which is a fairly old global firmware. It's really bad and I really want to update but since I don't own a PC my only option is to go through the process of manual installation of these ZIP packages...
The problem is though, I can't find the update files anywhere. I need 211 and so on until I get to 350.
Any idea where to get them?

I guess your bootloader is still locked. You have 2 options to upgrade to latest roms, both will involve wiping all data on your phone, so backup first:
- without unlocking BL, you can flash official ROM files with QPST. This will bring you to latest version and remain 100% stock; hence you will get future OTAs
- Unlock BL and flash any rom you want using fastboot or TWRP. This will give you the flexibility to swap rom versions, in most case you will be able to go from CN to ROW without wiping data. But you won't get OTAs. For all future upgrades you will need to flash with TWRP manually.
Before hand, you will have to choose whether you want CN (11.1.105) or ROW (11.0.350) rom.
You'll find walkthroughs here or using google.

TWRP, Rooting and Custom Rom HELP SM-T510 Tablet Tab A 10.1

Hey guys, this is my first post. I just bought a Samsung SM-T510 and would like to unlock all the features. I'm currently trying to follow multiple guides on how to do so. To my understanding, my best bet is lineageOs 16. I've been following https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-16-0-t3987317 alongside with https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...howto-t3989361 and I'm pretty confused on the method order i need to follow. What I mean is do I install rom first, TWRP, Magisk etc.?
More guides ive been following:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-10-1-t3934805
https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/i...system-as-root
I see posts saying I need and don't need Multidisabler so I'm confused on what I actually need: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ption-t3963020
Another one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ption-t3919714
https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...eries-t3918699
I have so many tabs open currently; I know I'm missing a few important ones.
So given all that info, i think i have all the software to do this between kernels, rom, twrp, odin, magisk, multi disabler? and i think thats all.
My sm-t510 build number is T510XXU2ASK5, looking through the lineage rom guide, I click the link https://samfrew.com/model/SM-T510/ and i see different versions. I'm honestly completely confused about this file and how I'm going to use it. I understand it to be the stock rom? as in factory software? With TWRP too, the numbers don't match my current build number leaving me very confused.
Do I need to downgrade my build number (i don't know if it's even a thing just asking)?
I think i can do everything relatively easy once I have an understanding of what to do first (order of things) and the specific files for the specific steps. When I'm reading these guides, I honestly have no idea which download goes for what. For ex. going back to https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-16-0-t3987317 like what do I need to download, the build number listed in notes regarding kernel or go to the download section right below and use that? Or both and if both, how do I use them separately for there a specific purpose? I cannot find anything that makes me feel comfortable rooting/custom rom on my device. Not comfortable in terms of I don't know what I'm doing exactly. I have put days of reading into this and still, I cannot figure out how to do this. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. This is stressing me out and I would like to get this done before Monday due to me having some serious surgery. The reason being; I won't be as fresh on everything I've read recently.
I'm sorry if this post is choppy and all over the place. I'm just exhausted and clueless at this point. If I left any info out in order for someone to help me please let me know so I can provide it.
EDIT: The TWRP file ends in build number SK1, the file lineage-16.0-20191019-UNOFFICIAL-T510XXU2ASI4.tar.md5 doesn't match the TWRP file as well as my current build number; which ends in SK5. So nothing is matching the 3 last characters in my build number across all guides besides the samfrew link.
Also, I keep seeing i need a .tar TWRP file for recovery (?) but when I unzip both files are .img (named boot/recovery)
You don’t unzip the .tar files. Keep them as is.

I don't get a .tar file until I unzip the folder; I get a filed with .tar.md5
My recommendation would be to first upgrade to T510XXS2ASK1 of the OEM firmware, since that's the latest version for which Samsung has published kernel source. Use the latest release of Odin and install BL, AP and HOME_CSC. After this, unlock the bootloader and prevent VaultKeeper from relocking it by always enabling Debugger Options while connected to the Internet after a factory wipe.
From there, you could just install TWRP, install the latest MultiDisabler, and live with the Samsung firmware. You could even install Magisk to root. However, I prefer a clean Google OS without all the OEM bloatware, so I'd recommend installing the latest Nexus Stock (which includes TWRP and the custom kernel that disables Knox boot security features). Again, use Odin and install it to AP and do a factory wipe in TWRP because file-based encryption is still unsupported on these custom ROMs.
You could install LineageOS instead, but I haven't yet updated that for T510XXS2ASK1. I've just been busy and Andy hasn't been releasing any new LineageOS 16 GSIs. We're also pretty close to releasing a LineageOS 17 build.

Just rename the file cutting off the .md5.
is it possible to downgrade from sk5 to sk1? you cannot upgrade to a later version, and I know downgrading can have reverse effects on the tablet. I have same tablet I would like to know. if I flash sk1 is there a way to fix it if it bricks?

Another one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ption-t3919714
https://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...eries-t3918699

without reading answers i can say that im with YOU! Im almost 3 days to root my T510! We must RAMDISK YES in Magisk but to do that we need to extract recovery.img (https://www.droidwin.com/install-magisk-in-recovery-root-android/) from stock original ROM T510OXM5CUJ1 and Im stucked at the part NORAMDISK trying to patch recovery.img with Magisk Manager (with recovery mode checked) but i only get the "waiting for device in ADB" and I conect disconect USB C and nothing...Still NO RAMDISK...
I used 3 different ROMS but no lucky and tried with firmware CUJ1 but no lucky again. Without "NORAMDISK: YES" no root...stucked. But i saw a T510 with OrangeFOX!

I just finished flashing the latest Nexus ROM and rooted it with Magisk merely by flashing the Magisk zip file. You can flash the Nexus ROM without first flashing anything else but the latest CUL1 (not CUJ1) stock ROM. Nexus includes both TWRP and gapps. The only time you have to patch things to get Magisk installed is when you are trying to root a stock ROM instead of a custom ROM. Custom ROMs always to the patching for you.

You don't need to flash TWRP if you flash https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...k-for-2019-galaxy-tab-a-10-1-sm-t510.4234889/ TWRP is built into this ROM. After installing stock CUL1, did you boot it, connect to wifi, skip the rest of setup and then enable Dev mode before rebooting to download and flashing from Odin?
edit: Don't attempt to download from the regular download link. Use the link under Build archives that says Android File Host and scroll down till you find the CUL1 md5 file.

EDIT: i dont have OEM unlock option in DEV but its unlocked, i checked when in downloaded mode it says "lock device and..." so its unlocked.

You must connect wifi and enable Dev mode before flashing. If, after flashing CUL1, you went through the regular setup routine and put in a Google Account, you must also enable OEM in Dev options.

USB cables are notorious for being flaky. Sometimes it helps to just turn the cable over and plug it back in. I always keep several on hand so that if I have connection problems I can try another cable.
