I know that the partitions are a bit different between the Touchwiz I9505 and the Google Edition I9505G -- does anyone know what needs to be done to a CWM flashable or otherwise to get a Touchwiz ROM booting on a I9505G? I've tried changing the updater-script without any luck. Do I just need to flash the system tar using heimdall instead of using TWRP?

I'm wondering the same thing. The partition layout does create its own challenges but getting an updater-script working would be the first hurdle.

I've successfully modified the updater script, however it never boots. Maybe the i9505 kernel isn't compatible?

I really thought the the i9505G would be easier to work with since is is stripped down. I can not believe how little information there is on roming this device. I see that plenty of people are asking but no one has an answer. Everyone has figured out how to go from a touchwiz rom to pure stock like the i9505 but we can not go the other way. HELP!!!!!!!

I'm pondering getting a GT-i9505G (Google Play Edition), and was wondering - since the bootloader is unlocked, could I flash a Touchwiz based i9505 rom to this device with something like Mobile ODIN to skip the modem (since I presume it wouldn't be compatible?).
Anyone heard anything about this?

If it does have Download mode you will be able to flash the system etc. And otherwise you will be able to flash a flashable zip in CWM

I was thinking about the same concept, but only a little bit more radical.. Let me explain: I recently flashed my Galaxy S 4 GT-I9505 to a GT-I9505G (I rooted my phone and put android 4.3 on it). The only problem is that it was a test version of android, so it has a few, but very annoying bugs, like a huge battery drain from time to time and some very specific app crashing.
I was wondering if I can flash my phone back to stock, the way I bought it (with android 4.2.2 and TouchWiz skin). Is this possible by flashing the stock GT-I9505 firmware on my device (hence the GT-I9505 and GT-I9505G are almost the same devices), or is there another way? And do I have to root it again?
FYI: I have also made a TWRP backup of the situation right before the flashing of android 4.3, but if I want to do it that way I have to root it and flash TWRP right?

Yes, you can ODIN back to complete stock I9505, and yes, you'll have to re-root, unless you flash a pre-rooted ODIN file.

So if I understand correctly I have to root and flash TWRP, and should be just fine if I restore from that backup?

You should just be able to flash TWRP from ODIN, then restore from your backup. Seems easier.

I would like to install Google Edition stock rom on my S4 i9505, it is locked to O2-UK, would it be possible to do so without being factory unlocked.
Thanks
No
First of all, you cannot simply install a GE ROM on a regular i9505, because the bootloader and the partitions are different. Also, ODIN will always recognize your phone as an i9505, so you cannot install GE ROMs this way.
What you can do is flash CWM and use a Custom ROM which is based on the GE ROM. But this is not exactly the same as a stock GE ROM. It comes close, though, and usually is 'better' anyways due to 3way reboot, root etc.

What does this mean? Is your bootloader locked? In this case you can only install ROMs via ODIN AFAIK, unless someone already has hacked the bootloader so that you can install CWM.
Edit: If your bootloader is locked you can only install stock ROMs of course, or some stock-based ROMs which don't touch the bootloader or contain an official bootloader update.

This is what I meant sorry. Flash a new ROM based on the GE. I have never flashed before so wouldn't know where to start.
I mean carrier locked to O2-UK, it is completely stock so I am guessing the bootloader is still locked.

Start reading the forums before you start flashing. These are basic questions. Read, learn and prevent your phone from becoming a paperweight.
I can tell you all the steps you need to take, but then you still don't know what you are doing.

I have a rooted MK2 device. I tried installing CWM through ROM Manager but my phone will not boot the CWM and when I try it comes up with an error.
It seems to be installing a Loki'd version of CWM recovery will solve the problem, but I don't how to flash loki recoveries and I've looked all over the forums for one specific to loki'd recoveries. Can someone help me out please? I'm relatively new at this so I'm totally unsure about how to proceed. Many thanks!
Sadly, no custom recoveries are currently available for MK2.

Oh no Well I have a few questions then.
1. I would like to install a 4.4 Google Edition rom. Is there any way for me to accomplish this? Also, is it a bad idea to go ahead and flash it without a recovery?
2. Should I revert the recovery back to original? How would I go about doing that?

There isn't anything you can do so far. The only thing you could do is use an app I can't remember the name of to flash mods to your current system, but you can not flash ROMs and definitely not anything that may need a different kernel. If you want to get a working recovery then find the MJ6-MJ9 thread but only use the recovery tar file, not the rest of it.

well.....if you were on MF3 then you could load safestrap and then get the google edition but it wont support the 4.4 only the 4.2.2 version of the GE
thats what i did. i highly doubt there will be an unlocked bootloader for MK2 im on mf3 and cant even update to 4.3 MK2.....ill ask the developer of safestrap and ask him because he was getting a MK2 galaxy s4 on att last week and he was doing some testing....or you can do some research your self but im happy to help even though my account says im a junior member i know quite a lot....
if safestrap works here is a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448726
IF SAFESTRAP WORKS LOOK UP A GUIDE ON HOW TO USE IT I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE BECAUSE I TOLD YOU ABOUT IT also dont use the stock rom slot if all this works

Hi All,
Appreciate the guides and community here. Looking for a little help on my ATT S4 KitKat 4.4.2. It's rooted via Towelroot.
I want to run a custom rom that isn't slow. I have Odin, proper Samsung USB drivers.
1) Can CNW be used on my phone to boot to recovery? If not, what are the alternatives and how do I use them (is there a guide you can share)?
2) Do I have NC1 on my phone, what the heck is NC2, NC1-what does this mean, is it relevant?
Thanks all
-Christian
If you have updated your phone to the att 4.4.2 firmware then you should be on NC1 which means you cannot put cwm or any CM rom. The only recovery you can use is safestrap. After that you can only flash rooms the specifically say safestrap compatible and you must flash the att_nc1 module after flashing rom for WiFi to work. Read the safestrap thread under the development section before doing anything.

Yes, I would also read over All Things ATT/MK2 etc in General--:good:
Those numbers NC1 etc are your build version. Can be found under Settings/About Phone. It will dictate what you can and can't do on your phone--We have no NC2 yet. :good:

Thanks. I have nb1. No luck getting safe strap to take. Install completes but does not recognize status as installed or allow boot to recovery.
I have rooted, supersu, busybox, and no luck with safestrap. Any ideas.
Upon booting I notice an icon that looks like a unlocked lock beneath the samsung logo. Touching it does nothing...
Thanks for getting back to me

I don't use safestrap. So not sure. Did you wipe all including system. And flash to correct slot. Stock slot I believe. Use correct safestrap. Also need sellinux, spelling? The lock is suppose to be there if rooted. Read the last 20 pages of the hash code safestrap thread plus the op. And same on All Things ATT/MK2 in General. May give some ideas. ☺

Aha! Safestrap running and custom ROM installed. Is there an index comparing all Safestrap/Touchwiz based roms? Runnign SHO right now and it's pretty bland (resolution looks low too).

Iam all for custom ROMS. I made one for the Tab3. If all you want is the stock Nexus experience, you could just download the Google Now Launcher which is Google release the AOSP launcher. Then if you want the individual AOSP apps, you can do a search here or a google search, and you will find XDA threads that provide the apps with installation instructions.
I have a problem....even dought I boot on Partition 1, just created, it says :
E: Unable to mount '/systemorig'
Worst part is...it let me do the installing procces of the Hyperdrive+RLS9.1+S4+Final and then...doesn't boot.
My Phone is : S4 Active SGH-i537 from At&T Unlocked and rooted.

Thanks in advanced!
Try to odin to stock (make sure you get the correct files), root, install SafeStrap following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448942
After that you need to flash the rom, kernel modules (you can get them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447764), then after that you flash SuperSU (if you don't have that file then here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 DO THESE STEPS I JUST SAID IN THE SAME ORDER LISTED HERE: Flash ROM, correct kernel modules, and then SuperSu.)
If the same error ocurrs then it's most likely the rom just isn't compatible with you device. Also, make sure it's an S4 Active rom not a normal S4 rom.
NOTE: I do not own an Active, but doing some 5 minute research is what helped me figure this out for your device.
Ok, I´ll try! Sorry, but everything I did before, unsuscefully is the result of many hours of forum research......problem is....I don´t know a lot about this....yes, probably shouldn´t mess with it, but truth is I live in Argentina, and wifi + bluetooth stop working with stock rom....no matter how many times I hard reset it so I figured changing rom might solve it........
I went to through the same you're going through with my S4. I ended up flashing the wrong Odin files like 5 times before I figured out what file to flash, lol. Glad to help

after you flash with safetrap, does the kernel have to be flash with safetrap or with Odin? i did root my GS4 using Odin and have the I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel. can i use that one or do i need to download any other tipe of kernel??
You need to flash the kernel modules via SafeStrap. The NJ4 modules (and other modules) can be downloaded from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221 navigate down to the KitKat Install instructions, look for step 4 (Install ATT Kernel Modules), in the first sentence click the hyper link redirecting you to AndroidFileHost, and then download the corresponding Kernel Modules to FLASH DIRECRLY AFTER EVERY ROM YOU FLASH.
THE FILES LINKED ARE FOR NORMAL S4 ONLY.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using XDA Free mobile app
Those two things are different...
You can only flash the nj4 kernel via Odin using the ap slot. I'm not sure if safestrap can flash kernels, because we're not meant to or we would be using twrp.
The nj4 modules should be flashed along with what ROM you're using during use of safestrap.
I was referring to the stock kernel modules (what I linked him/her to) needed to be flashed after the ROM each time. Also in SafeStrap, can't you flash stock kernels? I'm pretty sure you can. If not then I'm just crazy lol.

You need to use the Stock slot. Any other slot causes errors on most roms, and how do you have two bootloader versions? I'm thinking that MF1 is your BL and NE3 is baseband or something.

Do not use Safestrap...you have an unlocked bootloader and have no need for it.
It will not work well with an unlocked phone like you have as the recovery is designed for locked US based carriers.
I think he means that he's SIM unlocked. I'm not sure they have an unlocked BL for the Active. If they do, then he should go ahead and use TWRP or CWM.
