I bought a used Sprint S4 off of ebay. It is in brand new condition and has a bad esn. I am planning on having someone flash it to Page Plus tomorrow evening.
When I opened the box and turned the phone on it showed an error message: "Error 67: Registration Failure". I briefly looked up a couple of solutions, but I'm not sure if I should try to solve this problem before or after it gets flashed.
I don't want to waste money on flashing it if this problem can't be solved.
Does anybody has any experience with this problem?
Is it OK if I try to fix it before it's flashed?

That's an error because the phone still has the old owners number attached to it even after a factory reset.
Only way I have been able to get rid of it on a clean ESN phone is to.call sprint.

What should I do to fix it?
I haven't done anything (flashed, rooted, activated, etc.) except for turn it on and turn it off. I'm having it flashed from Sprint to Page Plus. I'm not sure Sprint will help me if I'm not even a customer of theirs.

That's just a standard network error message when a devices' info doesn't match. It's an unactivated phone with a bad ESN trying to connect to the network. For your flashing intents and purposes, nothing to worry about.

Obviously when you flash it (or whomever is doing the flash), all those info will be replaced with the appropriate PagePlus info.
Of-course Sprint isn't going to "help" you with a bad ESN phone.

Well if it's flashed properly, no. That error code is a specific error code when trying to register on the Sprint network. Like i mentioned earlier, when flashing, the Sprint info is replaced with PagePlus info (prl, etc), so it won't be connecting to the Sprint network anymore, but PagePlus.

I bought a G1 from someone off of ebay and he said it doesnt recieve signal. I figured I could buy and maybe fix it. The radio is not updated but they wiped the phone before I got it, so now im stuck at the google account sign in with no service. Does anyone have any ideas or do I just need to call up HTC and send the phone in for repairs?
thanks and God bless
try to go through the process of rooting the phone... That may fix some of the issues
but how can I root the phone if i cant get pass the Google account screen? Ive done the bootloader already...nothing happened....i flashed to crb43...that worked but it still didnt solve anything....ive tried to update the radio to the newest but it says "no signature (5 files)"...verification failed. Is there anything that I can do?

what do you mean can't get passed the account screen?
like you try to sign in and you can't?
If you still can't sign in, try using a different ROM like TheDude's and try bypassing the sign in. Maybe you can get it to the main screen and try running some debugging tools and such.

yea cause i dont have any service cause the phone doesnt get any signal....like thats how i bought it..something is wrong with the radio (i guess)...like i just want to use a different ROM that you can skip the account process on so i can ROOT then try to upgrade the radio to see if it will work....but dont you have to have ROOT in order to flash stuff?

well if you are trying to create an account from your phone with no signal, just to sign up on a computer.
the screen does give you an option to skip the sign in process.

Only for ADP1
op: Look in the dev forum helpful threads sticky for a link to activating w/o google account. Also, as a previous poster said, you might want to just do the whole rooting process. Downgrading to RC29 will revert both the radio and android build.
The official OTA CRB43 includes the new radio. If that's what you flashed and it didn't help, flashing the radio isn't going to cure your issue.
Haykuro's IonR2 also gives you the option to skip sign in.
hmmm so i guess i just need to call up htc CC and make up some bogus story saying that cupcake fried my radio....cause i cant even get signal...
i actually had 2 bars last night... so i was able to sign inn and use wifi...but it just randomly cut off....and i wiped my phone....without thinking
so i guess ill give htc a call
Lost signal now at RC29 w/old radio
But I cannot figure out how to proceed. I have been rooting modding for a year now and suddenly lost my signal while the phone was just sitting on my desk. loaded recovery still didn't work, went back to RC29 stupidly and now cannot get newer ADP build loaded because I cannot login past account screen and my Adb isn't working because my phone is not recognized via USB. Is there a secret to that pre-account login? Thanks for any help I have a $400 paperwight right now.
You should be able to enable wifi and login to google. I just went through this process since I don't have any service on the sim i'm using in the g1
--fg
what was the selllers name o ebay. i did the same exact thing and when i got it i updated everything and nothing worked.. i sent it in to htc cause it was under warranty. i told them the truth and its been repaired just waiting on fed ex to deliver it. they replaced the main board and antenna wire
similar problem
sorted: the issue was sim card being faulty.
i recently got an old UK G1 from my brother.
It keeps saying 'no service'. I have downgraded it to RC7 for purpose of rooting but it still says 'no service'.
I was able to bypass initial registration process using adb.
The phone is connecting well to wifi. It is also able to search 'available networks' but does not connect with tmobile.
I have asked for another sim card (it will take a few days to arrive) thinking that the problem is related to sim card but could i be wrong?
Is this problem related to hardware?
Is it possible that wifi, bluetooth and searching network works well and still the hardware is faulty?
what are your thoughts?
Hi guys,
I recently picked up a used S4 on Craigslist for cheap because the guy "screwed up" using Odin and flashed something that caused his phone to not register on any networks. I figured, what the hell, it's cheap enough and I might be able to restore it. So far I've restored the Rogers firmware over Odin and tried installing a custom rom/recovery too. I'm still getting this problem unfortunately. The IMEI reported with *#06# and in the status screen does match the sticker on the inside of the phone.
So I'm sure everyone's going to suggest that the phone was stolen and the IMEI has been blacklisted. My provider (Fido/Rogers) apparently doesn't care if the IMEI is blacklisted, they'll let it run anyway. I called up Fido anyway (since I'm a Fido customer) and asked them about the IMEI of this phone and they say they don't have any record of anyone calling in reporting it stolen and they don't have an IMEI database so she didn't have much to say about it.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've also flashed just the kernel, and I will flash a modem onto it too. I know my SIM card works, and both my SIM card and the last owners SIM cards don't work. I know the radio works because it picks up the emergency signal fine, and the SIM tray isn't damaged because when I put in my Fido SIM the Fido APN's automatically come up, as well as the lock screen goes from "No SIM inserted" to "unregistered SIM." Could my EFS partition be borked? Wifi works and IMEI shows up correctly.
The buyer said he would take the phone back if I can't fix it, but I want to try a bit more before I give up. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, that would be great. Thanks a lot in advance XDA!
Summary:
-Used S4
-Owner flashed something wrong in Odin
-Gets "Not registered to network" error, unregistered SIM error
-Tried restoring
-Tried new ROM/Recovery
-Carrier says IMEI is fine, also tried directly registering the IMEI to my account
-IMEI is correct in settings/sticker on back of phone
-Wifi/everything else all works

My girlfriend has a Bell sim, which when we insert, gives us the "Please enter unlock code" screen.
My sim does not do that. I know this device is for my carrier, but I figure the easiest way to get this going is to just unlock it and see if the problem persists on other networks.
I've tried that unlock tutorial before. The first time I tried it, when I just got the phone from the previous owner, it said "Golden-backup does not exist" so I couldn't do the restore step of that guide. After Odin-flashing everything and starting over, I can't even get into the UMTS menu anymore! I'll try another restore and give it another go though.
Edit: Another problem. I did a restore again using Odin and notices that it never properly wipes the phone. When I finish flashing, my Wifi still autoconnects on first boot, and every few seconds, a process crashes causing the phone to freeze. Has anyone heard of this kind of problem before?
Quick update:
Managed to Odin-flash it to the earliest firmware I could find for the phone without any crashing or freezing problems. Trying to do the network unlock method mentioned online. It does not work, even though I'm following the instructions to a T. Could it be that my EFS partition is borked and that the NV rebuild can't happen, meaning my radio configuration would also be borked?
Edit: Oh and when I booted up my phone for the first time, the phone was actually ON Fido! But within a few seconds, it went back to "Emergency calls only."
Hmm, that is some odd behavior, and definitely not a carrier lock. Shame it's never that simple to fix.
Not quite the same as your issue, but I lost my ability to make and receive calls after flashing a newer modem on an AOSP firmware. Flashing custom kernels, older modems, the latest stock rom and kernel were no help at all. I tried everything I could think of short of groveling. In the end the only way I got everything working again was to flash the original factory firmware my phone shipped with, factory wipe it from stock recovery, then flash it again. If you've already tried that (and I'm guessing you have), consider contacting Samsung regarding warranty. They've been really good to me in the past, even with second-hand phones.
I can confirm that Odin doesn't clean everything out. In my trials I also noticed that flashing via ODIN without a factory reset presented no setup wizard, caused lots of FC's and left some previous files hanging around.
Sounds like a bad sim tray.

I had trouble with my handset after it got run over in the street, making it's otterbox earn it's money. The only bad symptom after that episode was Emergency calls only kept recurring.
I cut a tiny square of transparent scotch tape, avoided touching the sticky side, and placed it squarely on the SIM chip's backside, to make it fit the sim slot more snugly. It sounds like you should try stacking two or three layers on your chip as it sounds to be more loose than mine is.
Hi everybody! Thanks for all the help trying to fix it! It ended up being that the guys the previous owner had unlock it used the debug-menu unlock method and my phone was one of the ones that doesn't accept it. Lots of other people complained about similar problems as me in the free unlock method thread. In the end, I paid for the FastGSM USB Unlock method and it fixed the problem.
OH MY GOSH YOU JUST SAVED ME from buying another phone!! THANKS so much.. I added 3 layers of tape on the back of my sim and it works!!! weird.. cause I have the Dual Sim.. and it was the first sim that would not work. the second sim was fine.. anyways.. THANKS SO MUCH!!
So I bought a galaxy s4 for sprint. I called to check the esn meid number sprint said it was clean and also checked it on swappa it also said it was clean. So I bought the phone. When I received it I tried activating it on my account dialing star 2 and talking to a rep. I give them the dec number and they said it can't be activateD???????? They said the " ID number is not compatible with this brand"? But it still has clean esn. The rep said it might of been flashed to use on a different carrier. S I've done research for 24 hours straight to to figure out this problem all I want is the phone activated on my sprint account. I going to talk to a guy about flashing the phone back to sprint, wanted to ask first to save the money maybe. So I've seen some similar post about flashing back but none with the same issue i have. What I've tired is CDMA tool, qpst and dfs but can't get the phone to respond when I click read. I've noticed today that I have the samsung drivers installed but not the Samsung diagnostic drivers, idk if that would make a difference but I'm going to try. Also I've noticed the network under the settings of the phone says samsung instead of sprint. The dec and hex number on the sticker under battery do match the ones under settings. The phone was rooted when I received it I completely put stock rom back on using Odin. But trying qpst and dfs I believe it has to be rooted to read ? Correct me if I'm wrong, so I re rooted the phone but it still didn't work or do anything. Idk what to do anymore any advice would be greatly appreciated I just want to activate this phone on my sprint account
Update: first of all I want to say thank you all for giving me advice on what to do. But I tried every single one and nothing seems to do what I want it to do sprint still says I can't activate it. Now with there stupid choice on just being able to activate the phone online instead of calling in is the stupidest thing sprint can do. They already suck with service. So about the sprint bootup logo I never see it maybe cause its unable to be activated, I don't know I tried putting the stock firmware on it still nothing. I tried calling boost to see if they could flash it back to sprint for me but they said they don't even have the phone in there system it's still sprints phone. Also I want to try to go to a sprint store but since the phone isn't activated on my account, without insurance I don't see what they could do for
It sounds like either a demo device for display purposes only or possibly a flashed esn.
If the esn was flashed it would show in the system as a different device.

Had the same thing happen to me a week ago on a different phone. The Sprint rep started a ticket to have them check on the phone's Dec and hex. They said on a rare occasion there will be an error and it can be fixed if it is truly a Sprint branded phone. Does it boot up with the Sprint logo?
I had this happen with my Optimus G that I got off eBay. I'm pretty sure that it had been flashed to a different carrier, so they couldn't activate it even though the ESN was technically clean. The Sprint phone rep told me that they "opened a ticket" on it, and a few days later I was able to activate it. I have no idea what they did internally to get it to work though.
EDIT: I take that back. It was my Evo 3D, not the Optimus G. I've had too many damn phones

Another possibility is the sim card is missing or from a different phone. Are you getting any signal at all when you power up the phone? If there's no signal then you might have a bad or missing card. From what I've gathered, sims between sprint LTE phones are not interchangeable. The card is matched with that specific phone. Swapping sims between same model phones won't work either. If this is the case then you need to call around to repair centers or corporate stores and repair centers to ask if they have sim cards for galaxy s4. Depends on where you go and who you talk to but it can be free or they can charge you.

No it doesn't boot up with sprint logo but it is a truly branded sprint phone the sticker in the back the prl number
It won't bootup to with the sprint logo until it is activated. If they flashed it to another carrier then that was removed. When you open up a brand new phone on first boot you won't get the Sprint logo until the phone fully boots and activates then it installs the Sprint specific files. What you should do is download the full mf9 tar file and install it with odin to make sure the phone has the correct radio and modem files installed for sprint network, then do the ##72786# entry in the dialer to factory reset the phone and activation status. Then try to activate the phone with Sprint.

Perfect solution... go to ebay and pay $70ish to get it flashed to prepaid (straight talk) on verizon towers. You have no limitation on mods and flashing roms. However you will lose 4g.

Actually, when brand new out of the box and first boot it will boot with the Samsung logo and during the first turn on the Sprint customization are added like all the sprint bloatware and boot animation. The second boot will then have the sprint boot. So if someone flashed it to a different carrier it wouldn't have the boot animation.

Sprint S4's always come with the boot animation out the box, whether or not its been flashed, when you flash a custom rom that is only when you lose sprints boot animation. Nothing is loaded afterward, All L720's come with sprint firmware, as I337 comes with AT&T firmware and so on and so forth.
You can just pay someone to repair the IMEI and MEID and reload a local Sprint PRL so it can be activated on sprint, I just did one yesterday for someone who had the same issue, $75 and they brought a cracked up galaxy s4 from sprint with a clean ESN as the donor.

That's the next step. I just have to wait until I get home so I don't need to use my phone and can pop the Tmo sim back in and do the reset. I did a whole reprovision and all and was surprised that didn't do it.
And you would have thought that would have done it, but no. It did initially. The restore stalled so I restarted the phone, and was back in the same boat again. Just reset again.
Got into developer mode and turned on oem unlock. Haven't had any problems since. Restarted phone a few times and even reset it again. Oem unlock stayed on after resetting.

I have unlocked my Sprint G6 and am using it on the TMUS network. Has anyone figured out how to load a different firmware that would support LTE and voLTE (Wifi Calling is not an option right now on my phone).
The phone seems to be stuck on 4G and the signal bar randomly goes up and down.
I'm in the same boat. I bought a Sprint LG G6, supposedly new, unlocked, paid for, and when I put in the TMobile SIM, it thinks the tray isn't inserted all the way. When I boot to the android OS, it sees bars, but it doesn't think a SIM is inserted. TMobile is baffled (I took it into the store). Now, I'm reading all kinds of conflicting information about how to deal with this... what's what? FYI, the person who sold me the phone is splitzo, won't answer my texts/calls. Unavailable for help.
Which of these is right?
1. I need to UICC Unlock it first. What is this, and how is it done?
2. I need to do a FACTORY reset. Where is this done from, bootloader, or the android OS's system menu? Are there specifics on how to do this?
3. I need to have Sprint SIM unlock it and that alone is good enough.
4. I need to flash the firmware from the bootloader. I didn't see anything on the TMobile forum for the LG G6 that looked promising for being able to do this. Astonishingly little. I'm assuming it cannot actually be done, flash from Sprint to TMobile...
5. I need to do something ELSE from developer mode or from the bootloader. How does one get into "developer mode"? Is this the android OS developer mode, or is this bootloader/recovery mode/lower-level developer mode? How does one get into developer mode?
Please help straighten this out. I can't be the only one left in this situation!
2. Factory Reset by going to Settings > System > Reset
5. Enable Developer Mode by going to Settings > System > About Phone > Tap on Build Number 7+ times.

I finally figured out that for the Sprint phones, a lot of phones in this model had bad SIM trays. I had the SIM tray replaced and everything (including the TMobile SIM chip) started working great. I didn't need to do anything to it, since it was unlocked.

is this true???
I'm having trouble with Tmobile sim on g6 unlocked as well. After talking to sprint reps for numerous times, finally one guy said I have to de-register the device from sprint network to release it to tmobile..
his recommendation was I port out .. LOL thanks Sprint.
Is the Sprint G6 hardware different to an unbranded G6, can the unbranded firmware be put on once the phone is unlocked?
Thanks

I think the unbranded/unlocked ones are GSM only. I was looking to see if a TMo one could be used on Verizon, and saw there were a few variations and the ones with CDMA are different than the rest.
They're not where Samsung is making one phone with everything.

so after talking with sprint community thru PM (much better support), I got my g6 unlocked. on tmobile, talk and txt works but no DATA. It seems like common issue but no one has firm answer. Anyone?
where did you get the sim tray from? been having this issue since i bought it. hard reset works but restart does not! so if your phone is dead of battery, then you gotta do hard reset which is a pain to transfer data/reinstall etc..

are you sure? i am in the same boat. spent countless hours on this. my phone is unlocked, hard reset detects other network sims but once i restart/re-insert it won't.
if what you said is true, have you tried to put sprint sim using defective tray? at least for me, it detects sprint sim anytime but other sims only when i do hard reset. if tray is the fault, then it should not even detect sprint sim, correct?
where did you get the sim? am worried if i buy from ebay, what if that too has the same issue?
I mean the sim reader ITSELF was bad, not the tray you put it in with. Sorry about that. I used several sims, from TMobile...
Got a tough one. Ever since last Wednesday my SIM card hasn't been recognizing like it should be. It will randomly stop working and not work again untill I flash a new rom/backup/stock. I've tried clearing the cache... Nothing. When I go into *#*#4636#*#*, if I turn of radio power, it will recognize my phone number after about 10 seconds. Also, It says that APN settings are not available for this user under APN settings... Any help is appreciated, thanks.

This only works with mediatek devices...
I have seen many posts about the sim card error, and have now experienced it myself. I have a USC XT1768 (on AT&T), running RR for about the last 4 months. Everything has worked perfectly until 3 nights ago when, suddenly, for no reason I had no service & saw there was "no sim" recognized. A Google search led me to switch to 3G and turn on airplane mode and reboot. After rebooting, I turned off airplane mode and service was restored. However, I am forced to use only 3G. After multiple "tests" switching back to 4G LTE, I always lose service. Yesterday, I "tested" again and LTE worked for about 8 hours before I got the sim card error. I re-did the airplane mode/3G process and I was back in business...just with 3G.
Last night when I got the "No Sim" error, I noticed that the preferred network in *#*#4636#*#* was "Unknown". It had been set to LTE/UMTS/Auto. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I switch it to Global, or anything else. The problem remains. Oddly, when I just entered *#*#4636#*#*, the preferred network setting was on WCDMA. Weird...I didn't select that setting.
Anyway, maybe this can kind of help someone else.
Tried the airplane mode/3g thing, still nothing for me. Just "lost" all recognition of a SIM. Nothing. No matter what I do, won't recognize. Lots online about it, loaded the latest F/W, etc., still nothing. The phone is like a new phone. Something feels hinkey about it though. Seems it's happening to unlocked Moto phones after about two-months.

I've had it for about a year when it happened, but what I did was send it to Moto and just told them it stopped working out of the blue. Flashed stock and sent it in. Within about 4 days they sent a new one. I would recommend that if you have a backup phone.
Did you have an unlocked bootloader (using the Moto code they send along with the warning that it'll void warranty)? If they still warrantied it, I'll do what you did, then sell the replacement ASAP. What an unreliable POS...

Not really. Clearly a small percentage of E4s have a SIM problem; Moto should own up to it. However, that's unlikely as they never acknowledged the HW GPS issue on the G4P line that impacts a much larger proportion of devices.

I think it's more related to custom modifications

Yeah, it was unlocked but I don't know why they had still look it though..
If you erase modemst1 and 2, the SIM will be recognized again. At least, it was on my XT1768. I wrote a small TWRP flashable version, for when it happens when I'm out and about. Just boot to recovery and "install" it. It's attached to my reply.
Additionally, the following firmware build is supposed to have the fix for this issue: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=746010030569967659
Addendum: AFAIK, all Moto E4's running a build less than NPQ26.69-64 have the SIM issue. From what I've seen, it happens when one doesn't have any signal for a few hours, then comes back into an area that has a signal.

can you please explain this step by step for a naive person. My Moto E4 amazon version has same problem. Hoping to fix it on my own

Can you boot TWRP or another custom recovery? Need that to apply the 'fix' in the form presented. Not even sure it will work on a bootloader locked device.

Must be other variables involved. Have a much older build and frequently travel to/through areas with no coverage. Have yet to experience a SIM issue.

Your bootloader is locked, so you can't apply my fix from TWRP. You will need to hook up your phone to a computer, boot your phone to your bootloader (power + down), on your computer cd to your Android Sdk tools directory, then run "fastboot erase modemst1" and "fastboot erase modemst2", then reboot your phone.
However, you should be getting OTA updates. The most recent firmware should prevent the issue.
