I am having a weird problem with my S4. It started about a month ago, the phone would not lock onto a satellite when I wanted to use Maps. If I left it on the 'searching for location' eventually it would kick in but only after about 10 minutes.
So I wiped the phone, restored my data and all seems to have been fine for 3 weeks but then it started doing it again last week. This time though, if I turn the GPS off and then back on again, the app that I was trying to use then starts working fine.
Today though I keep getting pop-up messages on the screen, every 10 mins or so, saying "Failed to update My Location - no signal" which I am guessing is to do with Google+.
Again, if I go to the quick settings, turn the GPS off and on again the pop up message goes away for at least a few hours. Anyone got any ideas what could be going wrong?

Hi Everyone,
I'm just received my AT&T Nexus one last night. I'm upgrading from a Touch Pro 2 and was excited to try Android. However, I have already encountered a very troublesome and annoying issue with the phone. After setting the phone up with my Google account I proceeded to start to become familiar with the phone and programs on it. One of the applications I was interested in using was Google Maps and navigation. I opened the application and browsed around the map for about 30 seconds until the phone spontaneously rebooted - showing the 4 color X logo for about 2 minutes and then continuing to boot into the operating system. I wasn't sure what happened so I tried to continue using the phone as usual, but this quickly became rather frustrating.
I had been able to use all the other applications on the phone without any issues. However, any time I opened the Maps application for about 30 seconds or so the phone would reboot. Sometimes it would come back into the operating system but other times it would sit at the 4 color X screen for at least 5 minutes before I pulled the battery to reset the phone. After this happening a few times I decided to try a factory reset on the device. Again, after this had finished and I used the maps application the phone rebooted after about 30 seconds of use.
This morning I was hoping my luck had changed and I wanted to see how the navigation application worked. I set the phone up to navigate to my workplace and began my drive. However, as I feared, the phone promptly rebooted after about 30 seconds of use (those 30 seconds seemed promising, if I could actually use the phone). The operating system came back up and I decided to give it another shot. Unsurprisingly, the phone once again rebooted after about 30 seconds of maps/navigation use. Even more frustrating, upon reboot the connection to the cellular network does not always come back online. Sometimes turning off the phone and turning it back on again works but other times I have to power off the phone, pull the battery and SIM for at least a minute, and try again.
This problem is extremely frustrating since the rest of the phone seems to work properly. I can use all of the other applications, send email, SMS, make calls - all the other things I would want to do on the phone. However, the maps and navigation feature was a huge draw for me to this phone and I am very frustrated that it is not working properly. While trying to figure this issue out I have already done 4 factory resets and even tried using the maps application before setting up my Google account, but I have not been able to find anything to keep the phone stable while using maps/GPS.
As of right now the phone is sitting back in the box ready to be shipped to Google/HTC/whoever support (if they ever get back to me). This is one of the most frustrating experiences I've had with a phone, and coming from a Windows Mobile user that's saying something. I tried to do a lot of searching online but couldn't find anyone else who had the same kind of problem that I was reporting. I have two friends who also own N1's (on Tmobile) and they have had nothing but great experiences with them. Does anyone know of what could be causing this issue and any way to fix it?
Thanks in advance!
That is crazy! Sounds like a bad lemmon... more likely the maps program didn't install correctly when it was flashed at the factory... have you tried using it with GPS turned off? This would isolate the issue to whether it is the maps app, or the GPS unit itself.
In either case, I would have the phone warranty swapped. Even if you could just re-install Google Maps, and it would be fixed, I would still be worried it was something more substantial. If you wouldn't be worried, and a re-install of google maps fixes it and that is good for you, there are places to get the .apk for google maps. I am at work, so no link is possible to a download for the google maps app on my end right now.
I agree that there is probably something wrong with the hardware. I did notice that there was a maps update available in the marketplace (sometime between the 2nd and 4th factory resets) but upgrading didn't seem to make a difference. I have contacted both Google and HTC support hoping that they will offer me a replacement device. However, I'm worried that the US holiday on Monday may slow my progress on the issue.
Thanks for the tips anyway!
Welcome! I would just demand that they declare it Dead On Arrival... that way they will ship you a brand new unit, then you return yours in the pre-paid packaging they send you. You probably won't get it until Tuesday/Wednesday because of the holiday.
good morning,
got my arc last weekend, and have tested several options last days. google maps works perfect in my car, also Sygic Aura. gps keeps working. but when using google navigation it works for about 3 minutes max (almost not less), and then it says gps signal lost. leaving it on, does not change it, but restarting keeps it working again for 3 minutes. am i overseeing a setting???
and anybody noticing when in google market i.e. that when there is a lot of white the screen, it flickers a lot??

ps further it looks a good phone compared to my htc touch hd with energy rom which i loved until now.

I haven't notice anything like that, would love to test it out tomorrow as I'm home now and there is no GPS connection here.
Regarding the flickering, do you mean very noticeable flickering or is barely noticeable?
as I can't see anything with my device, which means that you might need to factory reset or re-install the firmware using SEUS to test it out again..
but will report back tomorrow regarding the GPS
I've tested the navigation with Google and the GPS worked flawlessly for more than half an hour
So it could be your device which causing your problem or poor GPS coverage
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
Try another GPS app, I don't think GPS module can be faulty but its worth the try, also make sure you have more than 30% battery

Just increase the brightness above 50% to get rid of the flickering
I notice some flickering too when i'm in my room. Seems like the autobrightness working too much ?? Not sure tho.

Yes same problem with my arc. Was on a 2 hour journey yesterday, a few minutes of navigation GPS signal loss, closed navigation opened backup then got a full signal instantly, a few minutes later the same thing happened, so I rebooted the phones, this fixed the problem until 30 or 40 minutes later the phone just rebooted it self, then the same problem with navigation signal loss. I switched the phone off for 2 minutes then booted back up & navigation worked until it rebooted it self again I have just done a firmware updated, hopefully this will fix the problem????

Random restarts are fixed with 2.3.3 as for now it is a known issue with 2.3.2 from Google, Nexus S had the same problem.
I have the same problem, google navigation keep on checking for navigation capability..
I change to Papago X5, and it works fine!
Not sure if this is a problem with the phone or some settings i'm missing. I bought the phone 2 weeks ago so i think there is still time to get a replacement but i was wondering if anyone has seen this problem before.
The stock weather widget that is on the home screen by default does not refresh the weather sometimes. If you manually click on the refresh sign from the home screen, it shows it trying to refresh but nothing changes. Same happens if you open the app and refresh from there.
I have data turned on, sync, gps, etc. Nothing i can see that would be stopping it.
The problem is fixed if i reboot the phone. If the phone has been up for about 6-7 hours it still does the refresh just fine. If its been up for 30+ hours the problem above starts happening.
I have another S4 as well, have not been able to catch if the same thing happens with it, but a side by side comparison of "status" and all the apps running is identical and where my phone fails to update the weather (up time over 30 hours) this other one works just fine (up time 5 hours).
The only difference between the 2 is that my phone is rooted.
Happened with my s2. Not my s4
I think i was able to narrow it down and i'm starting to think there is nothing wrong here.
Clearing cache/data on the app also brings it back so no need to re-start. But the failed refresh seems to happen when i'm not able to get a GPS signal. (would be nice if it actually dont you this with an error pop up or something) Still need to try it a few more times but im 95% certain its timing out if it cant lock on GPS. It only seems to happen inside.
The other phone was working even without GPS turned on, which i thought was odd.I later found that it was not displaying current city, but instead was just configured to display the city i happened to be in.
Hello,
ok, I gave up on moving APPs to external SD on ICS 4.0.3...
Here is my new issue in a nutshell....
I updated to ICS 4.0.3 with no problems and everything worked fine for months. Within the last month, the tablet has developed a random problem, usually 30-90 seconds after it boots, where it may or may not freeze up (i.e. the screen is unresponsive) and I have to turn it oss and reboot and hope it doesn't happen again.
Sometimes this happens one or two times in a row and then its fine, sometimes it will happen five times or more, and then the next boot it is fine, sometimes it works fine on the first boot.
I have removed all kinds of apps and media to make sure I have lots of room and curently have about 5G free. but that didn't fix the issue.
I looked into the GPS txt files being left behind and made sure they are removed regularly, but that doesn't help the issue.
I used a Device Info APP to display what is going on when this happens, and while it doesn't show any APP or process I can see as the culprit, the CPU is being maxed at 100%?
It also seems to have "something" to do with the WiFi, as when it "locks up" the WiFi icon in the tray goes away and when I go to settings it seems stuck trying to turn off the WiFi. But at other times then the WiFi is working fine?!
Also, sometimes if I let it go to sleep for too long, when I wake it up this will happen..
SO... anyone got a clue what this could be?!
Hi all,
My gps and maps app are acting weird since yesterday night. I tried to reboot both app and phone, but something still seems off. I also tried to switch off and back on the gps, but it doesn't seem to have worked.
Long story short: I have a Nexus 4 with factory rom since 2013. Yesterday on the way home maps got stuck twice; it would show the road, but it wouldn't show my location.
Today I have been able to drive to the airport and return, but it often showed my location in the wrong place, especially when close to exits and parallel roads.
Any idea?
Thanks!
