Help! No sound through car dock with 4.2.2 - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just unlocked/rooted and have been playing around with a few roms to see which I like best. One HUGE issue for me is none of the 4.2.2 roms allow audio to come through the car dock usb cable. I know google ditched the car mode in 4.2.2 and thats ok by me (lots of alternatives) but I just bought a car dock so I wouldn't have to plug multiple cables in when getting into the car.
Anyone know a workaround or any ROMS that have it working? Or, any 4.2.1 ROMS out there worth flashing?
Thanks
Andy

Can anyone confirm any 4.2.2 ROMS that have working audio through the motorola car dock? A few folks claim there are but no one will confirm exactly what ROM.

I take back what I said. These were guys talking about their stock ROMs on the HD. However this was just posted a few days ago: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/restore-car-dock-mode-on-android-4-2/

Thanks for the link but this just enables the car dock trigger to be activated and allows the home key to bind to the car dock home screen when pressed. I have had no problem with a 4.2.2 rom and a market car dock app being triggered when placed in the car dock. Once in the car dock though the audio does not flow through the usb cable (special cable that is split on the charging end with a headphone jack so only one cable goes into the dock)
The audio through usb car dock issue is a little deeper.
I will keep searching but thanks for your efforts.

Tried the new beanstalk but still a no go for sound through the dock. Phone kind of freezes when you try to play something while docked too like most cm 10.1 ROMs.
Silk hoping someone figures this out.

TC: Does this cable setup you have work on the stock ROM? I know mt Razr M car dock came with a normal USB cable and a separate headphone cable. I was under the impression that the Razr M did not allow audio over USB like some of the other models do.
Could be wrong, just want to see what's going on here it it is capable.

Yes, it works on stock ROM as well as CleanRom. The cable that came with my dock (some docks don't come with it) has on one end the micro usb and on the other a regular sized USB and a headphone female split off of it. It is really convenient because then you just dock the phone and both are connected.
Andy

Still searching for a 4.2 ROM with working car dock audio. Tried a few that some said had it working (BeanStalk, CM official nightlies) as well as most others.
Come on, someone has to have fixed this. Can anyone confirm any 4.2 or later roms that have fixed this?

I heard it's been fixed on some other 4.2 phones (s3 I think...)
Basically Google removed the code from the kernel, so a new kernel would be required to fix it.

Anyone know of any roms (confirmed) that have enabled this yet?

I haven't seen any or personally tried any. However, I was just looking through the thread about the XPosed Framework modules. There's a module in there that is for allowing car dock on 4.2.2. I don't know if it works, but it never hurts to try. You'll need to install the Xposed Framework installer app here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401 . Then use the modules from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327541 .
If it works, come back and let us know.

Don't think that is going to do it as I have no problems with Car Dock Mode being enabled (the phone recognizing it is in a dock). I will try it if I get the time though.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't read too much into what the module actually did.

[Q] Audio via USB?

Since the Nook Simple Touch does not have an audio jack, it's a deal breaker for me.
However, might there be some way to route audio via usb -> 1/8th TRS? If so, I would definitely jump on the device and buy it as soon as I get some money to spend on new toys.
Bluetooth maybe?
Well since the Nook Color hardware is so close to the N2E, since they have working bluetooth, I bet it won't be too long until we see the N2E with it as well.

Bluetooth is great, but it has quality issues. Is there any way to get audio straight out of USB?
would this soulve the ****ty audio hardware issues? my car offers USB bt and aux would USB do the trick?

Well I believe the SoC includes Bluetooth hardware. Since it's there why not have that ability on the Nook as well. Enabling Bluetooth could solve general lack of audio issues for some people.
I thought I saw it somewhere that it's concluded Nook STR does NOT have function BT?
This week at Walmart I saw a USB / Bluetooth adapter. I believe you would need a micro-USB adapter to connect it to the Nook. But as I was looking at it, I was thinking of this thread and wondering if you could make the physical connections work, would the nook end up with Bluetooth capability.
Any thoughts on if this would work or not ?
not bleutooth ...
the thread seems to be going into bleutooth mode...
Was wondering if connectiing a headphone with a microusb adapter would help get the audio?
like say this micro usb to headphones adapter
www[dot]amazon[dot]com/Samsung-Headset-Adapter-Strive-Flight/dp/B003W057FS/ref=pd_cp_cps_1
same as catzilla this would really help me decide on the nook touch
People seem to get it working with the nook colour, so it may be for the touch as well.
First step is to get USB host mode
check this thread,

Saombra,
But this only works on CM7. Still waiting for something that may run on regular nook android. And it is quite scary that you may fry your usb on th enook in case you forget to switch it back to client mode before connecting to your computer.

Someone with a little patience could probably take the required code from the latest CM 2.6.29 kernel sources and apply it to the Nook kernel sources.
Also I seem to recall that the "usb power issue" was solved some time ago?
USB host mode is nice and all that, but are there actually any libs in Android that can push audio trough USB?
I remember dreaming of being able to connect my X10 to an external DAC, but that was before I invested in a couple of squeezeboxes
Well, I hope we can find someone with time and knowledge to do so.
And regarding the usb host, that is the information I found from saombra's post.
I don't know regarding library, but I know that in this post those guys learned how to get audio from a dock using a samsung smartphone usb port. So there is a way. Maybe the only way.

Dock Not Properly Recognized?

I have a 32GB WiFi Nexus 7 and the official dock. The tablet is unlocked, rooted, and running Franco kernel with CM10.1.
I can't seem to get the dock to work properly. If I choose Daydream as the default dock app, it will open Daydream when I dock it. Daydream is set to only start when docked, not when charged, so this tells me it's at least partially detecting the dock. If I select Tasker as the default dock app, nothing happens. Regardless of which app is default, audio is never routed through the dock. It's routed through the tablet speaker.
This is driving me nuts, because I bought the tablet and dock to use for a car install. If I can't get the dock working, the whole project will have to be redesigned.

My dock is being detected just fine using the Franken Nexus ROM. However, I have the same audio problem just slightly different. When I dock it into the pogo dock, it says do you want to use audio through the dock? I said yes but sound is not coming otu via the dock over what I know is a working audio cable. If I say no to audio out via the dock and hook the cord up to the headphone jack, I get sound.

CM 10.1 is based on 4.2.
I think part of it was the ROM. I installed Timur's USBROM, and the audio is now correctly routed. Tasker still does nothing, though. I suppose as long as the audio is routed properly, I can use a power trigger to activate the Tasker profile. It's not ideal, but it will work while I try to figure out how to make it work properly.

Any Rom's past 4.1 with Dock Audio Working?

Just Checking back in to see if anyone has found a ROM past 4.1 that has working Dock Audio through the USB cable? I am still stuck on CleanRom 4.1 because I love the convenience of docking in my car without having to plug anything else in. Would love to move up to a more current ROM but haven't found one that works and kind of getting tired of flashing.
I think there is an xposed module that provides a solution for this.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it and it only hooks the home key to return to the car app in the dock. Doesn't do anything for passing audio through the usb cable.

MHL stopped working after root and knox 0x1 flag

well i wanted to root my s4 so i could use joystick center touch server along with an app im working on, but now i cant get mhl to work on my s4 i9505 it worked the same day 4 hours before i rooted it and today when i tired to test on my tv just hdmi connected, black screen.
i know the cable works because it works on my sister phone which is from the same shop i acquired mine from, but her phone is unrooted with knox flag 0x0 where as mine is now 0x1 but im on the original tw 4.4.2 rom the knox came with so im confused.
help me someone thanks
It's one of those things that isn't mention when you trip Knox. You lose HDMI out.
This is a fix for screen mirroring and Allsharecast. Maybe it also works for HDMI out.

what if someone opened up a stock tw rom and took the files hdmi relies on then overwrite them on a 0x1 device maybe hdmi would work since the new files wouldnt have been modified by knox?
That won't work because the rom files remain default when knox sets to 0x1.
What steps did you try from the post I gave? I can't test it, but from what I read it should work.
I know this thread has seen a couple of full moon's but I did a lot if searches an read a lot of post's and websites but I don't know how to manage this issue.
since my knox is dripped to 0x1 mhl/hdmi adabter has stopped working.
Has anybody done research of fixing this problem Or is there a work around?
Thanks for your replies
Best regards
CatRR

MHL stopped working after Rooting
Hi,
my experience with an S5 G900F running Android 5.0.1 stock ROM is, that before rooting MHL works fine with different adapters available on the market.
After rooting however, at least one of them (it's a 5-in-1 adapter with HDMI, USB-A, SD, Micro-SD Slot) stopped working at all, while the original Samsung MHL (MHL to HDMI) adapter still works fine. Anotherone, it's a cable with HDMI plug on the one side and one cable coming out of that, with a USB-A plug on the other side, and the second cable coming out of the HDMI plug is the MHL which goes to the phone. The vendor of that cable is "CSL computers", an Ebay shop. It costs just a few Euros and works fine with the rooted phones. I tried two different G900F and a GT-I9300. All with Stock ROM and all rooted.
Cheers,
Hartwig

Hi im having same problem with SM-G906L
(S5 prime lte lgu+ korean) After 6.01 root, no mhl. Ive ordered samsung mhl after my red generic version stopped working.
Hopefully samsung mhl cable will fix problem.
Im thinking this is a cheeky way for samsung to sell more of there accessories to 'phone rooters' without pissing off everyone else. Could be wrong.
Thanks harwigw for some hope on this one

Little update on this, from my experience, rooting does NOT affect MHL support at all. It all depends on the ROM that you are using. Stock ROM always works fine, rooted or not. (I am using CWM auto-root). It even perfectly supports fun stuff like CEC Remote Control. The one adapter that I mentioned as not working anymore turned out to have a wire broken, and worked again after I soldered it back on.
If you are installing a custom ROM, then MHL goes south. I once saw it working with CM11 on an i9300 and then never again. On CM11 the phone freezes as soon as I plug in the MHL adapter, and eventually reboots.
Maybe a Custom ROM that is based on Samsung-StockROM-code will support MHL, but I have not tried that, so I cannot confirm.
Cheers,
Hartwig

[Q] Audio over USB with Android 5.0

I know there have been threads in the past about the Nexus 4 not being able to support outputting audio over USB, but now that stock Android 5.0 supports it, can the Nexus 4 do it?
I'm using the factory 5.0 images and I have an external DAC/amp that I want to use (Fiio e18) that's made for Android, but nothing seems to happen when I hook it up. I've read posts that the Nexus 4 physically can't output power over it's USB, which is fine because the DAC has it's own battery source... but can it at least output the audio?
I started with the stock kernel, but also tried the latest Franco kernel (r214) with no luck. Also, I verified the DAC itself works by using it with my laptop. I'm hoping there's just some hidden setting or patch I need to apply to get it to work... Has anyone else tried this yet?

pls report your findings if you can make it happened!!
i can not help you with your problem but it is something that interest me too. i only can suggest to use a more feature enabled kernel like unleashed or hells core
pls report your findings if you make it work mate!
That's a good idea... unfortunately no dice with the latest unleashed kernel either (98u). It claims it supports USB OTG, so I was hoping that would be enough, but maybe there's more that needs to be done.

one thing that you might not know. nexus 4 does support usb otg BUT cannot provide electricity via usb. you must use a y cable and provide external power so you it might not be possible to use your DAC!
Thanks, I did know that, but I figured that since my DAC is self-powered (it has its own battery) that I wouldn't need to do the y-cable trick.
Worth a try though, I'm going to order one and see if I can at least get regular USB OTG to work. Maybe once that's working it'll be easier to troubleshoot the audio.
Just wanted to update, I got the Y OTG cable so I could have external power at the same time... but still doesn't work. This is with stock 5.0.1 and unleashed 98u kernel. I went into Synapse and enabled the OTG setting as well. DAC doesn't get recognized, and I tried a few free apps that are supposed to do OTG checks, but they all came back that nothing is attached.
Usb otg is one thing and uab audio out is another. USB otg means that you can connect an USB stick or external hdd to your phone ( with or without external power) USB AUDIO OUT need special circuits from your internal Dac to the USB. If those are not implemented you will never have USB audio out. This is something witch depends on the manufacturer ( S4 mini with snapdragon 400 don't work with USB otg or USB audio out, htc mini 2 M8 works perfectly with fiio E18 as a audio surce for external DAC). So if you really need USB audio out please next time do your homework and read before buying a phone. P.S. Htc mini 2 M8 has the best audio ever and really you don't need an external dac. If you need more power just use your fiio as an amplifier with your phone.
Maybe you could find for your phone a apecial kernel modified for better audio experience. Flash that and use your headphones.
Good luck!
Thanks, yeah I don't need usb audio out... I've had the phone for over 2 years and I still really like it, so no plans on getting a new one just for this.
I believe it's physically possible to do audio out on the N4... I've seen random posts about people getting it to work, but they've all been on custom ROM's based on 4.4.x stuff. I'd really rather not try to reproduce that since 5.0 is running so much better on my phone, and I was just hoping with the new native Android support it might work out of the box. But alas, it looks like google locked down 5.0 on the N4 - even USB OTG storage doesn't work unless you put a custom kernel like unleashed on.
In the meantime, I've just been using it as a headphone amp like you suggest and it's a big improvement.
