GPS Fix and Help - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi all, so I've been trying to use my gps lately and when it's off wifi getting a signal fix has been really bad sometimes not happening at all. When I do get it it's 1300-1400 meters off... Can anyone please share help to get better satellite fix? I tried searching specifically for the GS4 and didn't find anything... Any help would be much appreciated!

Having the same problems here. Seems drastically worse after the latest update. Playing Ingress is almost impossible.

Try an app called GPS Status and Toolbox. It lets you use AGPS for more accuracy, along with correcting your phones compass. Works wonderfully. It sort of auto loads when you use a GPS application such as Google Maps or Navigation.

Yeah I'm not sure why it's occurring and no one else reporting on it but Navigation is pretty much unusable.

Thanks I did try a few apps...
Gps Toolbox
FasterFix
GPS Essentials
Nothing worked. At this point, I'm still searching. Appreciate your input!

I experienced this on AOKP last weekend and what I noticed in Google maps it would lock on for a second then drop for about 10 seconds then try again.
In GPS toolbox it would do the same thing and still think the amount of satellites it was connected to were still there. It's like the software isn't correctly talking to the hardware. Driver issue?
Sent from my SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app

Yeah I'm not sure. I don't even lock to any satellites at all sometimes.
AT&T S4 | GOLDENEYE v3.0 | KT 7.7 | xda premium

I'm thinking now this may be based on kernel issue perhaps unless someone can refute that claim. I'm pretty sure when I was running stock AT&T I was able to get extremely quick lock and accuracy. Maybe Ktoonz and faux kernel is causing the issues?

that also fixes the compass/magnetometer, and allows a quicker/tighter GPS fix as it downloads data as to where GPS sattelites OUGHT to be at the current time. there used to be a similar program for WinMo devices with GPS; it would auto update GPS location data so GPS locked on faster.

Have you tried this from the dialer *2767*3855# it's a full factory reset? It's from the sgs3 section I used it a few times when my GPS went on vacation by itself worked like a charm

This worked great for me, better than both the original fixes. Thanks for the heads up.
I was actually going to post the Auto Config tip on the original GPS fix thread. This fix works best for me. It's still flaky sometimes but it's much better than stock or the first fix.
I left in my initial settings from the first fix, and supplemented it with the auto setting from this fix. And though I leave use wireless networks disabled, I get an exact lock in about 5 seconds now!
now if only we could fix the compass...

NP guys
I was just playing with the settings and found that this worked great so I made a vid.
I also turned on MS Assisted so I can get a lock indoors
So this doesn't require you to have wireless networks turned on?
this one works great...
I actually never really had a problem with gps in the first place but usually it only finds 7 satellites and this fix instantly found me 11...

just tried those settings on my vibrant (exchanged my 1st one - this one just arrived today) and GPS was crap before the settings, and worse after the setting changes
just tried the settings and mine is even worse.
just joking, just joking OP, thanks for the tip. finally, after the first gps fix that was put out, this locked me on in my exact location, not 3 blocks away, from the start.

On mine if I use Maps and Nav it works fine but if I try and use Google Buzz and then maps it does not work until I reboot.
I just stop using buzz and it work fine now, not great but fine. it's accurate to about 3 feet for me if I have it in standalone mode, if I enable MS assist it accurate to about 15 feet.

GPS Not Working

Hi All,
I am using a Galaxy 3 with Lestatious 1.1 Gingy ROM with Apollo's Lagfix installed. My phone is working great (thanks to both Lestat and Apollo and each one of you) but my GPS is not working.
I can use wireless networking for positioning on Google Maps but the moment i turn on GPS it says "Your location is temporarily unavailable". I have tried many fixes including the ones mentioned in the development forums like:
1. Tweaking GPS2Setup
2. Using SGS Tools
3. Using a gps.conf file
4. GPS Booster
5. Fasterfix etc etc
Nothing has worked so far. Please help
sry dude.. i m afraid that u hav to reflash ur phn... nd then plz DO NOT instll any OCTY apps... coz it makes perfect workin gps DISABLED.. it's my personal experience!!...so beware of these apps...
There is an option in gps settings to obtain location from wi-fi and mobile networks...make sure it's checked......you'll get a faster location fix with that option checked......

I've found the GPS to be useless with the fix or without. It seems much better to use simulated GPS on the 3G network. Sure, theoretically, it's a bit less accurate, but then again, theoretically GPS is damn near perfect, but if it was, we wouldn't be having this issue.

I tried octy but it didn't help me much... :S
Octy apps did not help me to fix my gps.. I tried octy to make my gps faster.. But it made my workins gps dead every time.. I had to hadr reset or flash to make my gps alive again.. I am from india.. So I can assume octy app has some issues atleast with the indian..
So as octy did not make it for me, I tried gpssetup2 ... It locks my gps in 30seconds.. So I wil recommend you guys to go for gpssetup2 1st before going for octy apps..

The GPS for the LG GT540 is only supported for UK and US. As I live in New Zealand, it doesn't work for me unless I use the mod.
If you do live in those regions, see if it is receiving enough signal for it to make an assumption of the location. Wi-fi or cellular data makes the location more accurate.

After a long time (1 day) with the mobile switched on the GPS doesn't work, with any app, google maps, gps status or runtastic, I wait for the GPS fix status but the GPS system doesn't detect any satellite. Only few times works properly.
When it doesn't work I need to make a long batch to make it work, switch GPS off, run "fasterboot", run "GPS fix", switch GPS on, reboot and try it again... after this process some times works, and some times not... so I need to repeat the process until it works and it's a desperate situation.

Do you have data assisted location on? Go to --> Settings --> Location and security and then check if 'Use wireless networks' is only on. GPS will work with that on but will be less accurate that the use of an actual GPS connection. Also try it with both 'Use wireless networks' and 'Use GPS satellites' (if not already) and then try it with only 'Use GPS satellites' (to see if it actually determines location from satellites.
My GPS module seems to be also [email protected]#d up :/

I use it sometimes of the road or while walking. I use it about once a week, but the frequency can fluctuate. I use MapDroyd. It's free on the Android Market and you can use it offline with a downloadable map.
I haven't had any real problems with the GPS and 2.3.5 although it seems to get a bit jittery occasionally (sometimes jumping up to 3 miles away from the current location) and every now and the GPS seems to shut down and restart.
I use Sygic GPS Navigation but it also happens with Google Maps as well.
Do you have or had 'Use wireless network' on. It happens to mine too. It seems like the location of which it used a data connection on is first used and then the actual location by a GPS.

That could be why mine now works. I when to 4.2 (from Trinity kernel), I went to stock 4.11.... Then to 4.2. Never thought that doing a clean install may have been what "cured" my problem. BTW...the only app that didn't work was Google Nav. Go figure.

This did the same thing to me also after the 4.1.2 update and 4.2.1. Tried to find a fix for it both times and never could. Had to do a hard reset both times.
4.2.1 broke GPS in offline GMaps
I updated my N7 OTA to 4.2.1 from unrooted 4.2 yesterday and just noticed that GPS no longer works in Google Maps offline. The GPS icon obtains a fix as well as GPS Test app confirms satellite fix. But in Maps, it goes from "waiting for location" to "...unavailable".
My N7 was previously rooted under 4.1.2 before I went to 4.2. I performed a factory reset under 4.2 and kept it unrooted. I can't confirm whether I tried to use GPS Maps offline after going to 4.2.
Between the shortened battery life under 4.2 and now the inability to use GPS offline, I'm seriously debating about reverting back to a clean 4.1.2 and start over.
Did the update yesterday and after reading this thread I downloaded a couple of GPS apps and tried Google Maps with wifi sources turned off. No problems finding signal and getting a lock quickly. Mind you, I have a stock OS, no root as I just bought my N7 on Saturday.

Sadly, I am not rooted either, but right now, maps is hosed. Mind you, given that this is a WiFi tablet, it isn't huge ( I prefer 3rd party solutions more), but this is still something that shouldn't happen..
There's something in common you guys have, something to figure out... because GPS/Maps/Navigation etc is fine on my N7 on 4.2.. I haven't seen 4.2.1 yet.
edit: Just got 4.2.1, GPS is still fine. Holds sats, Google nav is happy, etc.

Is GPS enabled in the "toggles"?
To test you should first use a simpler program like "GPS Test" (free) in Play Store.
If the GPS lock is very, very slow you can try the next sequence:
- stop all GPS programs
- start your MOBILE data connection
- start GPS Test program.
Obviously you will get a GPS lock much faster outdoors and possibly never underground or in buildings with a lot of metal in the walls or on the roof.
Im outdoor and im not underground also the gps toggle is on.
Can it be better when i install a custom rom?

Have you tried the navigon app available with Samsung phones? Might not be the phone but the app itself especially if you have recently upgraded to KK...
Definately try a test gps app, it will tell you if you have signal. Also if you have mobile data off try with it on a couple of times as this uses the net to locate the satellites to lock onto the signal faster...
