[Q] Galaxy s4 stops charging off wall charger. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I somewhat recently got an AT&T Galaxy S4 and it was working great, until I went to charge it. It seems that most of the time, when I plug my phone in to charge at night, it stops charging after about 10 minutes. I am already asleep by this time so when I wake up, I'll have like 40% battery left.
I have tried different chargers, cables, sockets, just not a new battery.
Any tips to try before buying a new battery to test? Also, what's a good slim battery for a general user?

Personally I think you should call it in to get it replaced. See my thread here:

I was hoping I wouldn't have to switch it. Oh well, as long as it works. Thanks!

Yeah... well i mean it may not be the same issue I had but it's better safe than sorry, you know? The warranty is still valid, so might as well take advantage of it.
But in your case, at least it's charging and you're maintaining some sort of usable phone. Mine was dead for 2 whole days.
I would go ahead and call today because they ship Next Business Day. Meaning you'd get it tomorrow (if it's not too late). I had to wait 2 days because of the 4th of July.

Easy & Effective Permanent Bump Charging Solution

Ok, this whole bump charging thing pisses me off. My phone should just charge, I shouldn't need to spend hours every morning bump charging it. I've read that others have found work arounds that seemed to work for them - the only thing that's fixed the rapid drain rate in the start of the day (which refers of course to the lack of a full charge) has been daily bump charging. I've read about people using Christmas light timers to do this, but this is a bit more...robust. I've tried something new that seems to be, at least for me, a permanent solution.
1. Purchase something like this. There may be other timers that would work as well.
2. Plug your HTC charger into the timer.
3. Set the timer to cut the power off at, say, 4:00AM (this was a good time for me based on when I wake up for work).
4. Set it to turn power back on one minute later, at 4:01AM.
5. Set it to turn power off again at 4:31AM (my bump charging usually takes 30 minutes per cycle)
6. Set it to turn the power back on a minute later at 4:32AM.
7. And so on and so forth for a total of about 10 cycles (this is what works best for my Dinc, at least)
8. Turn your phone off when you go to bed.
8a. If anyone can figure out a way to auto-power off at around 4:00am, this would work even better. Power Off 1.1 wouldn't work on my SkyRaider Dinc.
9. Plug your phone in.
10. If you programmed the timer correctly, your phone should be fully bump charged at least 10 cycles by the time you wake up! Power on your phone and GO!
I'm interested to find out if others have tried this method. So far it's working wonders for my battery life. Comments welcomed.
Thanks for this post, creative solutions like this one are always nice.
HTC needs to get it together and finally fix this issue. It's starting to piss me off especially in the morning when i have to turn my phone off.

Curious as to how this is an os problem when the incredible is the only one that has it. Also, i wonder how a phone that charges through an os can charge while turned off... its a physical charger problem, not os.
The OS shuts off charging too early. But, its HTC phones in general, from what I've read. Bump charging has been around longer than the Dinc.

but from googling I see majority of the problems come HTC devices, so it is prob a os to hardward issue, or a complete software issue that has been addressed towards HTC... After digging around looks like the G1 had this problem also.
So who knows.
Honestly, my goal wasn't to inspire debate. Just wanted to offer some advice that may help others. If it helps an EVO user or a G1 user, all the better.
FWIW, it is just how the phone works. My Samsung Omnia charged the same way.
I simply let it charge overnight. When I get up in the morning I check my email or whatever and then put the phone back on the charger while I get ready for work. I leave for the day with a fully-charged battery. No muss, no fuss.
What's the big deal?

I suppose I'm just neurotic in that, when I wake up to a phone I plugged in the night before, I want the damn thing to be charged. With three children running around, two in diapers, EVERYTHING is muss and fuss. That's why I posted this solution that works for me. If you don't find it necessary for your circumstances, I'm jealous.
Would clearing the battery stats after bump charging help it get a better charge even when not bump charging?

My Moto Droid didn't do this. In fact, you couldn't charge it with it off.
Nor did my Omnia.
I have an easier solution which works perfectly:
Power the phone off
Charge overnight while I sleep
Power it back on in the morning
That's it. The issue is that the phone doesn't fully charge unless it is powered off. Bumping doesn't do anything special.
Even when it is powered off, if you unplug it and plug it back in you can get around another good hour or so of charging. I turn my phone off at night but bump it when i wake up in the middle of the night because it always charges for at least another thirty minutes.

Mmmm yea I am going to have to strongly disagree...
Actually, not true (about it being the Incredible only). I have an HTC Imagio also (my previous phone) which just happens to have the same battery and it had the same issue. If I charged the phone fully, unplugged the charger, turned off the phone and plugged it back in, the orange light stayed on for quite some time before turning green again.
I'm not saying it's a totally a hardware issue (something to do with the charging circuitry) but I think it's a combination of that in conjunction with the O/S. Android defintely seems to drain the battery a heck of a lot faster than WINMO6.5 did (as proven by my friend who has an HD2 and is dual booting 6.5 and Android. He's found that WINMO 6.5 lasts at least 5 hours or more than Android).
So ultimately, I think HTC needs to look into either A) the quality of these batteries, B) their charging circuitry, C) Both, and the folks at Google need to get to work on their power management logic and algorithms.

I've seen the same results that Amin did doing this whole "Bump" thing vs. just charging with the phone off, unplugging, and plugging back in. I've seen the same results on another HTC phone as well that was a non-android phone.
If you get a set of lithium AA batteries and get a charger, you can test how this is SUPPOSED to work. If you charge the AA's fully, take them out of the charger, then put them back in, you might see the light orange for maybe a minute or so before the charger realizes that the battries are full.
The HTC phones don't seem to do this. They seem to think the batteries are partially drained.

If you charge while off and unplug and replug, you may get some more orange light time. My concern isn't whether I can make the light go orange, it's battery life. What I have observed is that if I charge to full with the phone off, I get better battery life than if I charge to full with it on. None of the other factors (unplugging, replugging, etc) seems to make much difference.
Suggested 18 hours of charging - BY AN HTC REP!!!
Ok - For your amusement, check out some these emails (link below) that people recieved from tech support staff at HTC. In one of the emails, the support rep suggested 18 hours of charging using a modified "bump-charge" technique.
Are you freaking kidding me?!?!?

I just bought a HTC TP2 battery charger on ebay for $5 and 2 1500mah TP2 batteries for another $5 a piece and charge one while I use the other. Almost never use the stock battery and get tons of life on the TP2 batteries. Easier than this bump stuff.
I usually just carry the fully charged stock in my pocket. Just in case I am in a low signal area all day.

You sure you dont have any programs open? Also I don't use a task manager if that means anything to u

I bought this, it took about 2 weeks to get to me,(but for 12.99 for 2 batteries and a wall charger) as it was coming from hongkong, but got it yesterday, and its great, 2 extra batteries, and a wall charger so now i dont even need to charge my phone, i let the battery die so i can train them right, and just pop in a fully charged one when needed. the charger even has a usb hookup like the original wall charger that came with it, so really you could charge an extra battery, plus the one in the phone through the usb cable. The batteries are the same as the stock one that came with the phone. I wish i would have done this with my G1, instead of spending 90 bucks on 1 extra battery that didnt even have an external charger.

That would work, but I use the phone most of the day. It is not idle.
I take my phone off the charger at 5am @ 100%
Text most of the day at work with a 30 minute phone call at lunch...
Some moderate browsing and gaming...
I get home around 530pm, and "usually" have around 40%...

They are Samsung batteries, they look exactly like the one that came with my phone( down to the details written on the battery, only different thing is the date which was from 6/10 where the one with my phone was 7/10 and the s/n number), so I would say yes it is the same quality.

i bought the same set of batteries and charger. i'm still going through the charging/cycling phases with these new batteries. i'm not sure if they are on par with the stock batteries but i'll soon find out after a few more charges.
I am still doing that also, but I have to say that the wall charger is worth the money so even if the batteries don't work out, at least I have this awesome dual wall charger!

I got the same type of deal on ebay, 2 batteries & the charger (did the same thing with my MT3G as well), it's always nice having extra batteries, and I can use the charger when I'm traveling (it will also charge up my PSP). Now just need to get a mini to micro USB adapter and I have one less cable to carry around for charging - although I recently got an external drive for data storage, so I guess I will need a second cable if I want to tether my phone and use the external drive.
The batteries are not as good as stock and one seems to hold a charge better than the other (have to mark them so I remember which is which - these are generic one without the Samsung label), but as I train them via charge, use until dead, swap, charge, this should at least max them out a bit. The ones I had for my MT3G actually outperformed the original battery that came with so was hoping for the same. But considering how cheap these are, I could even pick up a couple more.

Those batteries from Hong Kong are not an original Samsung battery, they are just compatibles.
The lasting power of a li-on battery depends not just on the mAh, also the circuit inside the battery counts much of it.
The circuit takes care of the special sleep modes and energy saving features of a battery.
Samsung has its own energy saving codes that can not be put into a common compatible batteries.
This is why an original one is much more expensive than a compatible ones.
Extended battery for the vibrant, lasts twice as long and great door
Check this out: Moretalktime's feedback is 100% and the door is soft rubberized--better than stock IMO. It cradles well in your hand in a very comfortable position and lasts over twice as long.

Re: Batteries not lasting all day
I'd like to throw in an observation on this thread. My battery life is quite good on my Vibrant. Lasts all day easily but there are a couple of things to take notice of. First, I do not use any task killers or such, but I do check if there are any running programs with the built in task manager and stop them once I'm through with them. I've found that Voice Search and Web Access continue to run even after I've closed or backed out of them. Thus the need for use of task manager. But here's what I really found out. I've always charged my phone using the wall adapter with USB cable plugged into it. Never had a problem with battery life. Then for some reason, I decided to start using the USB cable attached to my computer. It would charge as normal and each morning it showed 100% charged. But after about 1 week of using the USB cable from the PC to charge the phone, I started having the horrible battery issues that I've read about. Extremely fast discharge. Leave at 8am and have like 50% use at noon. Crazy. So I started using the wall charger again and the phone has returned to its original state, easily lasting all day. Just a heads up for some of you guys having battery problems. No idea why this has happened but I've confirmed it. Maybe the Power Management thing on the USB ports on the PC?
I just saw this thread after a search on Google. I already posted elsewhere, but this looks like it might be the battery some of you are looking for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10055333&postcount=80
If nothing else, they also sell a 1600mAh battery which is 100mAh larger than the stock battery and still fits unter the stock cover. Good Luck

Battery failure during 1st extended usb trickle charge

Well, I don't think I had seen any yet but I might be the first device/battery failure as a result of using one of the new superior charging kernels.
I have been using the Netarchy 4.2.2 beta kernal (aggressive with havs) I believe and everything has been fine for the past week or so.
This afternoon I plugged my phone into USB and laid down for a nap. I woke up not long ago and my phone is completely dead now. It will not power on or indicate that it is plugged in or anything. I don't have another battery to test, but could it just be a battery failure? Or is it possible the whole device is hosed?

Anything is possible. Chances are that it was not the kernel though. Try a different charger and maybe a different battery. If all else fails take it in for repair.
How full was your battery before you plugged it in? You could try pulling the battery and waiting an hour or so before putting it back in and powering on.
I was down to about 30% when I plugged it in so it was getting a full charge. I remember getting a phone call during my nap that I ignored. When I finally got up the device was completely dark. I've got it unplugged and the battery out for now. Hopefully it will power back up in an hour or so....
If not I will have to try a buddy's battery in here tomorrow to see if that does anything. If not I'm simply out the device, there is no "taking it in for repair for me" unfortunately.
I hope it powers back up for you. If not, it would be good to try your friends battery so you could start trouble shooting.
Was this the original stock battery?
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Try a different cable. A little while back I thought my phone borked on me as it would not charge even though the charge light was on. When my wife's did the same thing I got suspicous and tried a different cable. Like magic, the problem went away.
I don't think the phone is hosed, might be just the battery, I had that exact situation happen to me back in december, when plugged in theres not even a light. I tried drastic measures to get it working even heating the battery to 120f for 5 min then letting it cool for 10 over and over, it finally worked when I got to a sprint store and they plugged it in to one of their wall chargers, I was shocked after hours of doing things with no results. to this day im still using the same battery and it has the same life as when new
still using sbc kernels too
been running SBC and have had no negative effects
Original red oem battery. I've tried my usb cable and my 2 wall chargers so far. Still no lights.
I did see the screen blip on for a fraction of a second a moment ago while pressing at the the power button, so that gives me glimmer of hope. About to see what happens with a car charger on the way over to my friend's to try another battery.
Wish me luck!
The fact that you where using the SBC can mean absolutely nothing. I have a friend with an Evo as well, I flashed every experimental kernel and Rom I can find and have had no real issue, hardware wise. Him, on the other had, had only updated via the Sprint OTA, never flashed any custom roms or kernels, never even Rooted.
one night while texting a reply to me, his phone flat out died. it was plugged in and everything, just went black and charge light went out. I put my battery in his phone the next day, swapped SD cards, etc, etc. nothing brought it back to life, it was gone.
Sprint actually replaced it for him, just tell them that you where simply charging it and it wouldn't turn on the next day. they won't be able to get it to boot up because it's dead.. no idea why his did it, I kindof feel that is what happened with yours. I don't think the kernel had anything to do with it.
Well it's been confirmed to be the battery by trying another one.
Today is the first time I've ever let the phone do an extended charge over USB using one of these sbc kernels and the battery just happens to take a **** during the process? That's one killer coincidence...
try the battery again tomorrow out after sitting for a bit, it will charge and work again

This happened to me when I was using a Zendroid kernel a couple weeks ago. You should be able to just plug your phone back in and charge it again. The orange light may blink at first or not turn on for a couple minutes, but it should charge.
I'm honestly not entirely sure, though. I put my dead battery in my sister's Evo, and the light thing is what happened to me. I let it charge in my sister's phone, and it turned out fine. Worked in the morning. Hopefully, you can do it in your own phone if you don't have another way to charge it.

4.2.2 should not have SBC.
It would not be surprising to hear that a stock battery just quits working. Sprint replaces these for peeps all the time. Li-Poly batteries are cheap to produce and like anything else, there are always bad ones in the bunch.
Seriously doubt it was caused by whatever is loaded on the phone otherwise there would be more coming up with same issue. Unless there is something with the beta and USB charging method. Still doesn't sound very likely.

That is a killer coincidence...but I do believe it is just a coincidence. I am at CES right now (well prep meetings and such) and the only way I charge when I travel is through USB. I have been using the 4.3 with SBC straight off of Net's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719763) and have had no issues. Good to see you have your phone back, but I am willing to bet it was a faulty battery, not the kernal.
Hope it doesn't turn you away from the SBC kernals, it is so much nicer to see it stay between 100% and 90% for hours on end instead of 10 minutes like before.
It's the kernel from my experience mostly tied to sbc kernels. My phone did the exact thing. I mean exact. Pulled battery, used different cables etc. One thing I did not use was the OEM HTC charger. I have PCs around me all the time or the car charger. My phone died in my room where I have other wall mounted usb chargers. Didn't think anything of it. A few hours later phone died. It was 54% or so when I plugged it in. I came back to a dead phone. Nothing i tried initially worked. Sprint tech support same thing. I knew they couldn't resolve it. I have spare batteries but this OEM battery was too new. I wanted to know the problem so as to not repeat it. Sprint offered to replace my phone but I said let me get back on that. Since I knew the kernels were playing with voltage and that over or under voltage can mess with the phone. I plugged the OEM HTC wall adapter in and sure enough I had a orange blinking light. I waited for a few mins. Booted into recovery and installed a nandroid backup with sense. It booted great and guess what my battery percentage was? 55%. The battery did not die but the system shut down and it wanted the exact voltage from the HTC charger to kick start it. Since then for me personally I have stayed away from sbc kernels. It might work for some but not for me.

Um, SBC and undervolting/HAVS aren't the same thing.
SBC is a new, experimental charging method that "just" came out.

Nexus 4 charging issue and wireless charging

So I've had my Nexus 4 for a couple months now and I've taken really good care of it. It's pretty mint. But today it refuses to charge and I have a phone interview for a job on Thursday and I really need this little guy to work. I have CM 10.1 and thought maybe it could be related to that in some way. Maybe it's just kinda glicthy right now? But the last time I was using the phone it died and I put it on the charger and an hour later it wouldn't turn on. I've tried 3 different chargers and none of them give me the little battery charging image or light up my LED notification light. Any troubleshooting ideas? If not, can anyone recommend a cheap wireless charger that works very well? Thanks for your help in advance, I really need to get my phone working immediately.

try your stock charger. Just leave it there for 10 minutes or so then try turning it on again.

what other chargers do you have at your disposal? Ideally you should use one with a rating of minimum of 1 amp. The stock charger is rated at 1.2 amps. For your case, if the 1 amp charger doesn't work, try a 1.5 or 2 amp charger for 30 minutes or so. See if that works.
Did you drop your phone or hit it against something?

Did I just get a lemon?

I got a brand new battery (Samsung branded, so "original") a month ago. But...it takes 1h40mins to fully charge from 0 to 100%. I remember the S5 took like 2h at the very minimum to charge from 10 to 100% some years ago with its first battery. Did I just get a lemon with twice as small battery capacity (Again, everything looks like the original battery. Says it's Vietnam-Korean and has a manufacturing date as well at the bottom left corner.). I flashed a stock 6.0.1 ROM to see if there was some fast charging option left enabled from the ROM/kernel I am on but it still said it needed around 1h40mins for a full charge from 0 to 100%. Wtf? Help, please
PS: I can get 4h SOT and around 10h total time with watching YouTube via WiFi for 2 hours and the other 2 doing other stuff around the web and other apps. But this charging time bothers me, it was not as fast as it is now.

My batteries for my S5s are starting to go bad but last about 4 - 5 hours with youtube, but I keep my screen as dim as I can get it. Samsung has a page on fake batteries, maybe this might help you:

Guess my battery is an original one according to this. Maybe it's just not manufactured recently? If it's made 2 years ago and has been staying at some storage place it lost its charge? idk

Its possible, depending on where you got it from It could be a used battery. Do you see any type of nicks or scratches on the gold connectors at the top? Do you see any swelling on the battery as well? I got two batteries I use for my S5 and one is starting to swell and will not charge to 100% anymore.

I got it from a normal shop, they don't scam people as my last one was also from there and was fine for the 2 years I had it. And battery is perfect, no swelling, etc. Just weird that it charges for 1 hour lol

Are you plugging the phone to any type of fast charger? My S7's fast charge plug in would charge other non- fast charge phones just slightly faster than a normal charger?
Grasping at straws here lol
You could ask the store to see if you could get another one, if that one is the same it maybe just normal now?
None of the Samsung batteries had a date on the label that I got with a brand new s3, s4, s5, note 2, note 3, and note 4.
