I have some experience rooting(evo 4g, nexus 4). I think that i have decided to use Casual root, for the apparent simplicity, to root my att s4. My question: is there a step by step video tutorial for windows 7? I see there are some drivers to download, but im not sure where they go. I downloaded them but after that im not sure what to do. Total newb here, but willing to learn and try.

Which of these would be easiest? Is there also a step by step somewhere or a video like the one just posted?

casual is about the easiest possible way to root your device. just follow the simple instructions. do not install any drivers. just plug the device in and start casual. the rest will take care of itself. after the process is complete, continue on to backing up before proceeding. check out this guide. cheers

Assuming its the MDL update, its fine to install. Then go the Sprint Original Android Dev Forum and find CF's Auto Root thread. Its pretty simple, you just have to get familiar with Odin.
As a former HTC user myself I'll say dont let it intimidate you, rooting using CF's Auto Root is a cinch. Theres a how-to video as well that will walk you through step-by-step.

Don't forget to throw a thanks (and a donation if you can) to Chainfire for his dev work, and to the OP of the how-to vids.

If you are moving from MDL to MF9 update, do this before you use Chainfire. Chainfire works great with MF9, but you have to manually load MF9 and do a bunch of extra steps if you use CF first. Also, the HotSpot mentioned in the CF Auto Root thread doesn't work with MDL and will brick your phone. If this occurs, don't stress there is a QBKing77 Youtube video that tells you how to unroot and reverse it all and start over, including resetting the recovery software from TWRP back to stock. After unrooting did Sprint's OTA update to MDL, followed by OTA update to MF9, then re-install of TWRP, then free HotSpot, with no problems. Links are all here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Hello, I just rooted my phone through chainfirez method and made a backup with clockworkmod and backed up the efs files. I saved both of them to my desktop, sd card, and uploaded it to dropbox. I can't seem to find any good instructions on how to install a custom rom or the pros/cons of them. Does anyone know a guide for beginners on selecting and installing roms? Thanks for any help. My phone is the S4 i337m from Fido (Rogers).
Basically, find any Canadian S4 compatible ROM, read the OP. Any ROM thread will have instructions on how to install it correctly. With today's phones, there is no one good source for instructions on installing all ROMs. Each ROM will vary. Just pick a ROM and do what the OP tells you.

Just find the trends that have the info you need and have some patience and read read read. What i like about this forum is that everything is so detailed and easy to understand. Sometimes you have to do trial and error and you learn from the result and apply the knowledge for future reference.
Like the others said, it depends highly on the rom you want to install and you should always follow the steps in the thread of the rom. For your peace though look at the CyanogenMod site.

Once I unlock/root it, can I flash any ROM in this forum?
Thanks

You need to read the threads that are in the General and q & a sections. Start with the pinned threads. The questions you asked show that you have not done any reading and all members are expected to search and read. You will be glad if you do, because if you don't you will more than likely end up with a brick. There are several threads that already have the answers you asked. Good luck.
I read the stickied Q&A, which linked to the thread I posted above. It seems that the tool should be able to root and unlock my MK2 phone. I just wanted to confirm to double check.

It doesn't. Read all section stickies, there is a big guide in the general section telling you what works.

Hello and welcome! Let's see if I can't help a little here...
First you should back things up as rooting methods from scratch will wipe all of your data/phone.
After that, there are two ways to research or go about rooting; either follow this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
or if you are NOT feeling a comprehensive guide and want a more straightforward one you can do the following...
you can follow muniz_ri's instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-to-update-to-g900voe1-5-0-keeproot-t3149784/
specifically #4 in Notes in the first post (in addition, install a superuser app [supersu, superuser, etc.] from the play store). Afterward, you can go to the first link I showed you to put it to any version you want, or any of muniz_ri's update and keeproot threads or whatever ROM you might want to install.

Now you search the forums and read the stickies at the top. They're there for a reason, learn it. If this is too advanced for you, no one is writing step-by-step instructions specifically for you. You must learn for yourself, it's all been posted before.:good:
