Has everybody encountered after doing some intensive stuff like doing AnTuTu benchmark, the phone abruptly slows down to a crawl where animations slow down like rotation being damn slow, swiping through screens also is slow, and games being damn slow. For instance, I ran AnTuTu benchmark and it won't go higher than 30FPS. where usually it's 40 - 60 FPS.
This is not the typical lag I encounter.
The only way to solve this is to restart the phone. Sometimes restarting the phone once is not enough.
This sounds fishy. Never happened to me before. Although will try again once I download Antutu.
Edit: Just checked... Ran Antutu. Got a score of 6474. Everything seems fine. After quitting Antutu, scrolled through the homescreens. Everything was smooth as before.
Edit2: Ran Antutu again & got a score of 6502. Tried playing ShadowGun immediately afterwards. It ran without any hiccups...
Currently on KL8.

Turn off the power saving mode and you should notice a big improvement in lag.
I get around 56fps running AnTuTu with system power saving off. With power saving on,I only get 27fps.A big difference.
Could this be an overheating issue? Your cpu might be throttling coz of high temps.

This is not only because of AnTuTu, this only happens when I'm running an intensive app, where suddenly after exiting it will slow down to a crawl.
The most annoying part is the rotation animation. It is devastating slow.

I'm not sure because the phone also isn't hot at that time.
I haven't seen this issue either with benchmark apps or with intensive games. Might be an issue specific to your device. What rom is it running?

I never had this issue on Stock ROM's.
Both custom ROM's I used had this issue.

What sort of "intensive app"? Is it still running in the background?
If you have an app that uses a lot of memory, and then immediately try to use another memory intensive app, you may the OS begins to run low on memory as the garbage collector may not have run yet.
Regards,
Dave

After playing GTA 3, Modern Combat 3, Asphalt 6, I will have this issue.
Killing the tasks on task manager won't help, neither cleaning memory.
Same problem
I have exactly same problem, my phone starts to lag randomly example in browser.
First its super smooth and then suddenly it kind of turns off gpu acceleration and starts to lag.
Even cm9 alpha doesnt have this problem so it's wery strange issue. And its there on every phone my friend also noticed it.
this is an issue with mali driver on note.
the gpu clock have two clockspeed that is 160mhz and 267mhz.
during that time when u run the benchmark the gpu clock to 160 and only utilise half of the mali power.
this had been explained by tegrak, creator of tegrak app.
the only solution is reboot and rerun the test or flash fm 2.0 that is clock min to 200mhz or flash tegrak kernel (can find at tegrak 2nd core in android dev forum) and use tegrak overclock app to lock the gpu to 267mhz.

CM9 is awesome, but I can't live without the video player.
It is same problem i have exactly same impact, everything becomes lagyer. Same thing with every note.
The browser was only sample where you can notice it.
I can hereby confirm that Tegrak Kernel Build 31 is able to resolve the issue after setting the minimum GPU clock to 267mhz on Overclock Ultimate.
FM Kernel 2.0 doesn't solve the issue.

One of my favorite things about the Note: No hotness!!! I had this issue all the time with the SGSII to the point that I couldn't hold it to me ear. My Note doesn't even get warm! So happy.
i am on a stock phone and seen enough force closures in the last week and more than enough in the last 48h. i was just showing my daughter the live wallpapers, so was just flipping through various ones, after flipping through them quickly and setting it, the phone froze, was not able to do anything for about half and hour as phone was booting and rebooting with me unable to even switch off the phone. luckily, at one point i just was able to change wall paper to the black wall paper available on the market and it sorted itself out. it has done this twice whle flipping through live wall papers quickly. the wll papers i was flipping through were flames, weather windmills, aquariium, 3d wall paper, most came with the phone with the exception of flames and black wallpaper.
the phone is fine now but OTG function is flaky, dont know if it is the connector, so have ordered a samsung otg from amazon now and will find out whether it is the phone or the cable.
the built in file manager has serious lag issues as it keeps 'processing' after changing every folder and have stopped using that now and use other free ad supported versions instead which have no problems. same with stock video player which keeps force closing often, so use mxplayer or dice player without issues.
an expensive phone like this should work stock apps fine and not require third party apps for video playing and file browsing etc. was on the verge of returning it when it froze but seems ok now.
I know that the Nexus 7 used to lag when the memory dropped below 3Gb when on 4.1.1, but I thought the issue was fixed for 4.1.2
Lately however, my memory has dropped to around 1.5Gb and now I'm starting to get lag. I was playing Shadowgun: DeadZone and it was lagging terribly, even crashing my N7. I just thought the lag was terrible net connection though and thought nothing else of it. So, started playing the normal Shadowgun but even that lagged. Played a few other games to see how they played and the majority of them lagged.
I'm just wondering, is this lag caused by the low memory, or something else? I've had no problems before, its just started happening. I'm on PA2.50 w/ franco kernel, 16Gb N7.

I'd try 4.2.2 stock, I have around 400-500MB usage idle. On 4.2.1 (stock and custom) I had way higher usage though (700MB-1GB).
On 4.2.2 though I seem to have only 1.2GB of usable RAM whereas 4.2.1 had 1.6GB
I'm no pro, but if RAM 'disappeared' maybe it got reserved as GPU memory? And the GPU using it's own pool now would explain why you have less used up in general.

Well the N10 is advertised to have 2GB of RAM. Prior to 4.2.2, we had 1.6GB usable, with the other 400MB or so (from what I hear) reserved for the GPU already. Now after 4.2.2, there's 1.2GB usable.
May as well just sold it as a 1GB device at this point... lol

Hmm, the only other device that comes close to this behavior that I've seen is the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (stated 1GB, has around 600MB usable). The display isn't nearly HD on that (1024x600 I think) so I really can't think of an actual reason for the 400MB loss there.
A Galaxy Prevail I have shows about 235MB usable, with 384MB stated.
Can't recall numbers on the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 7 though, but I really don't recall memory usage/free being of a concern.

And the device does have 2gb RAM. You should know by now that the RAM in phones and tablets is versatile and used for more than just user space.
One could easily argue the counterpoint of yours, which is that 2gb of RAM means more for the GPU while still keeping a respectable amount for the user. But obviously, you need to do your research when buying.

With some simple init.d and sysctl.conf tweaks you can have complete control over how the RAM is used. Search is your friend. Or at least it should be. LOL
It has to share ram with the GPU. This is monster resolution screen... Did you think it would have as much ram usable as a 720p screen? There's a lot going on at all times with this hardware because of the screen. Remember that ram is worthless if its not being used.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
They just released the updated kernel source for 4.2.2 for the N10 and there is a change where they up the ram reserved for the GPU by 384mb. The comment says they did this as otherwise when the GPU needed more ram it would cause fragmentation of the user space ram.

After having upgraded to 4.2.2... I have the same behaviour ....ram decreased to 1.3...in total before with 4.2.1 was 1.6...something strange, if the extra ram has been allocated for gpu....why with 4.2.1 wasn't like now?...in my opinion...they didn't free up the ram after upgrading..it's just locked...
I don't see notable differences between 4.2.2 and 4.2.1.... So that strange...could it be a bug?

The answer to why the total ram availible has decreased has been solved - Read gzub post.
Called it re-allocated, free'd up or locked, The GPU now has 800mb in 4.2.2 all to its self, where as before it had half that. So in running apps you will only see a total of around 1.2gb.
moving on...
I have a similar issue as the OP.
Sitting idle its running at around 400-500mb used but can, and often does, spike up to over a gb which causes it to not function correctly (Chrome especially seems to throw a massive wobbler and never stay open). I have nothing different installed than I have on my N7 or S3. I mainly use it for browsing, email. If I check running apps there is nothing else there above what was there when it was idling at around 400-500mb.
I have tried a factory reset and the issue still persists. Next step is to roll back to 4.2.1 to see if I can get the stability back as I didn't have these issues on 4.2.1.

Sounds you might be suffering from the same thing as I have since I got my N10.
I don't know how many have this or has noticed it but after a while the amount of free memory just starts disappearing and no matter what you do, you don't seem to be able to recover it unless you reboot. And when the memory gets low enough, the device soft reboots itself. I still haven't found the cause of this but I have finally found where all the memory is going. It turns out that it's the surfaceflinger process that hogs the memory. I started checking when I was running low on memory and surfaceflinger was at that point using over 400MB of it. My suspicion was confirmed when I rebooted and noticed that it went down to around 25MB and now after a while of usage, it has slowly climbed to 50MB.
It would be great if some developer could take a look at this in order to try to fix it.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is surfaceflinger? I don't see anything similarly named on my device.
I've just downloaded 'usage timelines free' to monitor memory usage in more detail on all my devices and compare.

It's a system process out of /system/bin/. Check your app to see if it's hiding system processes. Most of the process viewing apps/loggers hide system processes by default.
SurfaceFlinger is Androids compositor: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5699107/android-surfaceflinger
SurfaceFlinger shouldn't stay open though. Everytime I've seen it in OS Monitor the process lasts less than a second and disappears. Something he's running, or the ROM he's using is keeping it open for whatever reason..

I noticed it with the "ps" terminal command. Currently I'm running Aokp but before that I was running stock. I'm suspecting the aosp browser or flash being the cause but I can't confirm it.
EDIT: surfaceflinger is shown in OS Monitor all the time but with ps I can see the amount of memory it is using.
After some monitoring I found nothing. I did a full refresh install of 4.2.2 from the factory image and have installed nothing on top other than applying updates for what comes as standard. After two days of browsing it started to slow down again and show as low memory. I installed a terminal and ran 'PS surfaceflinger', it was showing as using over 600mbs. Stupidly I didn't take a screen dump, but I imagine it will happen again.
Anyone able to shed any light on what's going on here?
Having the same issue
I too have seen surfaceflinger using almost 600MB of RAM. My used RAM was over 1GB and apps were running very sluggish. My SwiftKey keyboard constantly does a soft restart in the middle of typing when the tablet is in this state as well as other apps acting as others have described in this thread. Time for a fix Google!
Just bought Asphalt 8, honestly expected it to run flawlessly on my Black GS4-i9500 but that was not the case. Installation was fine, but game is really laggy and the graphic is kind of messed up and unstable. It's like the graphic card is not powerful enough to run it at full speed. I'm playing on default settings and I made sure there is no other application running besides Airborne. My phone is a genuine one and have not rooted it. It's the same for Minion Rush and Asphalt 7.
What might be causing this problem according to you guys and is there any way to fix this?
Many thanks.

Had no lags like this on stock. Everything ran flawlessly.
but smearing issue bothered me so I rooted it and installed perseus kernel. Everything is fast as hell. And using wanam rom.
try a factory reset. Then update to latest ota. And test again.
There is no such thing called "lag" on my I9500, on GE Port or stock Touchwiz.
But yes, my phone is rooted and got swapped external to internal.
Probably there's something wrong in your beloved storage.

It is the way it is.
Forget these guys who says Asphalt 8 run flawlessly on I9500/I9505, it doesn't. Flawlessly is 60fps all the time. S4 can't deliver that.
It doesn't matter which ROM you are using, they do little to no help on GPU performance, unless when you are OCing the GPU.
Just make sure you don't have background apps running.
For Asphalt 8 on I9500 expect a frame rate on High Quality averaging on 30fps, with peaks on 40fps and dips on 15fps.
I9505 is a few frames worse.
If you really want have a gain on FPS, you should have root, be on Android 4.2 and change the resolution to let's say 720x1280.
got ard 30fps, can't say perfect but good enough to play. Anyway racing game don't require very high fps.
If you experience HEAVY LAG then something must be wrong.

Is there any way to show FPS when gaming on android devices ? I looked in playstore and there's none.
To get back to the subject, you should see what's wrong with your phone .. Asphalt runs well on S4 as it's running on IPAD 4 (but the bigger screen makes it better experience really) .. S2 also runs it well with medium graphics.
I thought the 3d titles were a bit laggy or jerky but played on iPhone 5 and we're the same smaller screen was rubbish.

It is paid though... It used to be cheaper, I paid U$ 1.00 (maybe I bought it on specials days, don't know...) but now it is around U$ 4.00.
It shows fps on screen. It affects the performance a little bit when active, something around 5%-10%.

Anyway, I am using Phoenix rom v8.
I have no idea if the "rom" affects the game because of some scripts or is it just my phone. I really have no idea what was causing.
Is it because of ext2sd? Greenify?
I optimize the ram before I play and see if 50% of ram and below is available.
