[Q] Nexus 7 ADB Back/Restore problem - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to do a back up and restore using mskip's Nexus 7 Toolkit. Everything seems fine in terms of installing the toolkit and drivers but when I attempt the back up the file is only approx 125mb in size when there should be around 600mb to back up. Also when trying the restore, I enter the password and the Nexus displays 'restoration started' then instantly displays 'restoration ended' and theres no change to my device.
I have tried the manual command prompt method before using a guide posted on this site with the same results. I have heard that adb back up doesn't always work on some devices....am I just one of the unlucky ones or could I be missing something?
Running Widows 7 64 bit
Thanks

Thanks mihahn. Gave Helium a go but a keep getting a error message to do with my 'desktop backup password'. I think I'm gonna give up with this backing up idea, lol.

You set up the desktop backup password in the Developer section of the settings on the device.

dkendrick, thanks for posting. I did have a password set already, that's what was causing the issue. After doing a little research, apparently Helium Backup may not/will not work if you have a password set. The the guy who made the app even posted somewhere there may be issues and he'll look into it.
I've managed to remove my password and Helium backup now works perfectly, exactly what I wanted. Thanks mihahn for recommending it:good:

Manual restore of app and data from Titanium Backup?

After I flashed CM7 (after a full wipe) Titanium won't restore any apps or data. I made sure unknown sources was checked and made sure I had root and superuser running. I went to the online troubleshooting guide and followed the instructions to change the settings within the app also. Updated busybox and used fix permissions in Rom Manager and no luck. It worked fine on the nightly builds and worked great on Mikshift 1.0 and 1.1. I need to be able to restore my Battle.net authenticator on my phone for Warcraft but I need to be able to restore the data also or it won't work. Any ideas or insight on how to fix this issue or do a manual restore of the app and data would be great. I have the stock Rom and Mikshifts Roms backed up but I'd like to run CM7. Titanium works fine on the other roms and restores the apps and data like normal.

Are you running the Pro version of Ti Backup? If so, I read that it still has issues with CM7. Specifically, the batch one-click restore of apps+data isn't working. I read there is a setting somewhere to change it to a manual one-by-one app restore as a temporary workaround.
Titanium Backup>Menu>Prefrences>(Under Troubleshooting)App Processing Mode>Interactive Mode.
Try that and it should work...
I wondered if that was the problem, still not sure but nothings worked so far.

Only restores the app, I need the data so the app is sync'ed to Battle.nets servers like the original install or I can't log onto WOW with this rom running on my phone. A fresh install prompts you to sync all over again and the authenticator is useless if you haven't removed the old authenticator. I could removed the authenticator and reinstall it on the CM rom and then make another backup so I could use it across all the roms I already have saved (I like to jump around) but that's a lot of work.

If you made the backup with each app's data (it should, be default), it should be restored with data by default. I don't know why yours isn't doing that :/

The only only thing it'll do is restore in interactive mode which uses the stock android installer....so it only uses the apk file and doesn't pull any data with it. I've never has issues with titanium before on any device that couldn't easily be fixed. Still stumped lol. It does show a different version of busybox installed than all my other working versions show, and after using the busybox app from the market it still shows the old version. I've tried fresh installs of titanium and the CM7 rom and no luck. Guess I'll hold off and try to contact the developer or wait for updates. Shouldn't be long.

this is only an issue for the battle.net that puts a new serial with a new install. the Classic installer DOES restore data.
Once you have your battle.net restored the first time and it doesnt work, go back to Ti Backup, click restore and then choose Data only.
Should solve your problem. Please don't misinform others that Ti Backup doesn't work. It does, I promise, I use it often. It might appear that is only installing app, but it installs all data too (My angry birds better follow me!)
We had this issue and ran through a bunch of ways, and foudn that the method described above does work.

I asked for help and explained my problem, I stated it didn't work for me. My post wasn't labeled "Titanium Backup Broken for CM7!!!!" I tried your method and IT WILL NOT RESTORE DATA ON MY DEVICE on my CM7 rom period. I even downloaded the rom again I've done fresh installs and full wipes and as stated before it works fine for the older versions and Mikshift roms. Thanks for the flame though....that why I hate to ask for help here.

It just hangs until I kill the app. It will use the classic installer to install the app just fine but it will not do data. I'm gonna try a fresh backup on a different SD card. I know its just something off the wall, now its bugging me so much I have to figure it out lol.

Will you please try it one more time? Cosine83 had the exact same problem and it was fixed following the advice Riggs already gave you.
Go into Titanium preferences and change Apps Processing Mode to Interactive. Then restore battle.net via Titanium. After you've restored it again select it in Titanium and hit Restore. When it asks you if you want app+data or data only choose data only.

Sometimes TB just won't restore anything in CM7 if the backup was made in Sense. But backups made in CM7 work fine in Sense. Kind of weird. Had to manually restore data without TB, jesusice.

I've tried it lol I will try again. Quick question though, what version of busybox is showing in TB for you guys in your CM7 installs? Mine starts out with 1.16.2 and when I download busybox it rolls back to 1.16.0. It will not accept the new 1.18.? versions of busybox. I wondered if that was causing it.

I'm using Busybox 1.16.0.
Are you sure you're using Interactive (Classic Android installer) for all of this. Before you mentioned that there was a circle that was spinning and not stopping.
If you haven't restarted since that, you have to go and kill the Ti Backup process before trying any of this. We'll get your problem solved don't worry.
I got it. I swear the only thing I did was swap an old 2gig sd card into the phone and made a new backup from my Mikshift rom then a fresh install of CM7. I installed an old version (couple weeks old) of Titanium from a backup I made with Astro. And it worked right off the bat. Still had to go over every app and install it and then the data but I can live with that. Sorry if I got fussy earlier, I'm just not used to getting stumped like that lol. Thanks guys for all the help but I think its just my janky phone being a PITA. Its been kinda buggy since I got it.

You don't even need to do that second step.
While set to "Interactive mode", pick restore app + data. Once the plain-jane Android installer is done, CLICK DONE. Next, Titanium Backup will automatically restore that app's data, just like you told it to.
Unless this issue is specific to the "battle.net" app, this process has worked for me every time, with every app I've tried.

Can't backup my phone? Confused.

Hey guys. So I have unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7 using the root toolkit. All is well, have been running rooted apps etc. I have bought and installed ROM Toolbox Pro in order to backup my tablet (among other things), but it will not allow me to do this. When I go to make a backup of the current ROM (it is stock 4.1.1, unlocked and rooted), I get a warning that states "We failed to connect to ROM Manager".
Seems like I need ClockWorkMod Recovery installed? How do I go about putting this on the tablet? I don't need to start from scratch, i.e. unlocking and rooting all over again do I?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. I always managed to install custom ROMs on my Desire HD, I'm just a bit stuck here.
Also, when I persisted with the backup, disregarding the error message, the boot screen was a little dead Android with a red exclamation mark. Holding power button down allowed me to reboot the unit though.
Thanks
EDIT: Just found this guide, which, in the instructions, says to unlock and root first THEN proceed to install CWM. Would I be right to follow this guide?

Hmm I must have done something wrong. Installed CWM Recovery, tried to use ROM Manager to create a backup, it gets like 90% through then says there was an error backing up data. Now when I reboot I'm told that I'm running out of storage space? Before, I had like 2gb free, now 153mb? Have found where the backup files were saved, only ~20mb so that can't be it. Hahah this is neverending

You need to free up more space before you make your backup. Delete the backup folder AND the blobs folder. CWR now uses blobs folder for differential backups.

Question about rooting and the loss of data

Hi, I have a Nexus 4 and it is not rooted.
I want to root it, the problem:
I have many apps and emails accounts configured and dont want to make the whole procedure again.
I know that, if I root, will loose all my data.
Is there any way to make it like this:
1. backup all my configurations and apps
2. root
3. restore, and all will be working?
Download the ToolKit and do an ADB Backup.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351
Follow the guide. First time I used it... I made a few backups with different configs incase I needed to put it on different phones.
Works like a charm

Don't use a toolkit. Figure it out on how to do it on your own because when something is wrong with your phone a toolkit won't fix your problem because op doesn't know how fast boot flash work
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
If you use ADB BACKUP or a toolkit that uses it, be prepared. Some apps will likely NOT be backed up. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35270239#post35270239
I agrree, though, you're better off if you can do it without using a toolkit.
I use the app DataSync to backup app data to dropbox. Once you have the phone setup again and the apps downloaded you just sync it with your DataSync files in your dropbox account and the data will be restored. I would not try and sync system apps just user apps.
Unfortunately there currently is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader.

[Q] TiBa WiFi Access Points XML backup fails.

Please help me out here. With Titanium Backup everything backs up except my Wifi Access Points XML. If fails every time through running from batch.
Also tried from the menu 'Special Backup' > 'Backup data to XML' and TiBa crashes.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm rooted with superSU v1.3, Stock recovery, kernel and rom, TiBa pro and up to date. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry too much, TiBu should back it up in binary as well... at least mine does. During a restore it gives you the option to use the XML or Binary backup.

Thanks. Is there anyway to confirm a binary backup? Do you possibly know the filename so I can look for it in my backup folder? I have alot of WiFi access points stored so i'd like to not have to ask everyone around town for the passwords again if I can avoid it.

Look inside TiBu under the Backup/Restore tab, and scrool down to Wifi Access Points. Your should have one that says XML to the right and one above it that says 101 (or binary)

Well I feel considerably noobish for not noticing that, though I was sorting the list by backup date so it wasn't right above. Thanks for pointing that out.
One more question if you know, will the binary backup restore on custom ROM's and even newer phones in the future? Or is the XML a safer route for such things, in which case I would need to figure out why it's broken. Thanks again.

no news here either... also hoping for a fix in the next update.
I've been having the same problem for a while now. I think it could very well be related to our phone's build.prop because just today, I did a full backup and it finally backed up my wifi access points. It even restored it with no problems..
Note: I made the backup on the 4.2.2 Odexed GE ROM and restored it on the 4.2.2 Deodexed Kangabean ROM.

Add me to the list of people getting an Error message when trying to back up the XML version of the Wi-Fi Access Points file. I never like getting error messages, so I hope there is a fix. Would be nice if there were an easy way to tell TiBu to ignore this file.

TiBa is at least backup up WiFi in a binary backup, which is fine as long as you stay on the same device. It may not restore on a different device though, hence why I want the XML to work!

Same XML issue here - surprised TiBu has not fixed it yet...
Anyways, I have been simply backing up the data file itself.
from root: data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf is the file you want. Back that up to your computer or MicroSD and then use it to restore your wifi whenever necessary. Just overwrite the file. Can't remember if reboot is necessary afterwards but I don't think so.

Nice very clever. I tried restoring it just for kicks and it worked. I just dropped it in the folder, overwrote it, fixed permissions, then rebooted. Worked great. Nice.
On the other hand, I do hope that the Titanium team does fix this soon. It must have something to do with this device because it worked fine until I switched to the S4 from the S3 and when I moved my backup folder over to my new device it wouldn't restore.

Is It Possible to Backup Files When Phone Doesn't Boot?

Hello,
I literally installed the Facebook app from Google Play on my Nexus 4 hours ago and then my phone literally went blank. Eventually my phone was turned off as there was no more battery. I charged it and powered it but it no longer boots (it has been stuck at the X screen for hours). Is it possible to backup my files despite this so I can try to reinstall a custom ROM/unroot my Nexus 4?
I spent some time searching the forums and couldn't find the answer, so any response would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe, it depends if you can boot into recovery and have a custom recovery

I can. I am running on TWRP v2.3.2.3 but I don't think I can access the files through ADB as I did not set it to Development Mode (ever). It seems I can actually back it up through TWRP, but my concern is I don't know how to extract it out of my phone because once I reinstall JB everything will be wiped right?
Once I reinstall a JB version that means everything will be erased. Does anyone how to keep that backup from TWRP if you can't take it out from your phone? It appears my version doesn't seem to have Nandroid.
Also, does anyone know if it's "System" that stores all the contacts/text messages?
I want to backup my Data folder too but I only have 900mb free space left on my phone (I have the 8gb version) and my Data file is about 1.5gb. I don't remember if I have anything valuable in my Data file that I need to recover, so just to be sure, does anyone know if I can explore my "Data" folder to remove content to make it smaller so I can back it up? Thanks.
ADB via recovery should be the way to go then.
Did you try something as an ADB file manager?
See: https://github.com/sole/aafm for example.
This should allow you to copy the files to your PC without having to backing them up first on the device itself.
An alternative way would be to connect to the (ADB) shell, delete some useless files.. like music and stuff you already have (or package music as one archive - download - delete) etc. Till you have enough to package the data directory in one go. If done right the archive should preserve file permissions which is an extra plus I guess.
The way I try to make sure I don't have a problem like this is:
- Letting TitaniumBackup backup all important applications + data every night @ 4 AM when it's charging (while I am sleeping).
- Use FolderSync to sync the new backups to a server I have running. Could also be cloud of course. (Only on Wifi and while charging)
Good luck!
If you can boot into recovery it might be possible to pull data there.
Also, if you know which ROM was installed, you can try just flashing the system partition of respective ROM. It might not fix your issue but might allow you to boot and backup your data prior to completely resetting everything.
I've had something similar once. Tried all kind of solutions via recovery/fastboot/adb and only flashing a clean system image allowed me to recover important data. The phone was unusable still (constant FC's) but it allowed me to establish an adb connection and pull all data I didn't want to lose.

Problem Solved, didn't follow any of the suggestions. Thanks though.
If you can, please do put your solution here so other people with a similar problem can use search and find the solution. Thanks!

To be honest, I actually didn't. I decided to perform a reset and lose my data (and reinstall my ROM) as I didn't have the patience to experiment and figure it out. I just don't have time for that.
