To do that you need root, because if you don't change those files the stock recovery will be back every time.

Yes. If you want to keep the CWM, you should delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/etc/install-recovery.sh

flash a custom recovery, then boot into it and flash a rom. there wasnt any need for the root toolkit considering all you have to do to root any nexus is fastboot oem unlock, fastboot a custom recovery, flash a custom rom, and reboot.

easiest way.. download the goo manager app from the market, free. open it, give it root permission when it asks, press the menu button(three dots on the top right), press install openrecovery script, press yes, let it do its thing, now twrp recovery is installed
fastboot would be the method to install it when youre just rooting. but if you are already rooted, through goo manager is the easiest way to install twrp recovery.

I found I had to reflash the recovery ROM every time I made a backup or flash with goo. Using ROM manager now and works fine.

[Q] Flash Stock Recovery

Hi guys, I have my Nexus 4 with CWM + SuperSU and I want to ask about flash Stock Recovery..
When i choose reboot on CWM it says if I want to prevent the phone from flashing the Stock Recovery. I saw somewhere that we'll have Android 5.0 in September, I know I need to be Stock ROM, Stock Recovery, etc.. So can I just choose "no" and my Nexus 4 will flash automatically on the Stock Recovery?? or I need to manually flash via fastboot..
Another thing is: Do I need to unroot, or OTA will override the Root??
Thanks a lot, Sorry for bad English..

You are thinking too far ahead. When 5.0 will come out, there will be flashable zips available long before you get the official OTA update, so there's no need for the stock recovery.

[Q] Flash Custom Recovery Without a Computer

Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster
I was wondering if there is currently a way to get a custom recovery on my phone without the use of a computer. I was able to root my phone using towel root, and first thing I did was install Rom Manager and start to make a nandroid backup until I got:
" RECOVERY BOOTING...
RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set Warranty Bit: recovery"
So I went into download mode, hit cancel and was able to boot into android but to this day I am unable to get into recovery, stock or custom. Due to my current complicated situation I do not have access to a computer and was hoping there was a work around to allow me to implement a custom recovery without a pc. I want to be able to make a nandroid backup, flash zips into the OS, and possibly experiment with other roms... I have tried looking into this myself but the only thing I came up with us an app called "Flashing Tool", though I don't know whether that will allow me to do what I want it to. Oh, and I don't care about Knox being flagged by the way.
So ladies and gentlemen of the Xda community, I beg for your assistance and would greatly appreciate any answers you can give me.
My phone is a T-Mobile Note 3, rooted stock Kit Kat rom, any other info needed just let me know.

That is the standard message while recovery is booting. How long did you wait?

After that message it just restarts into a boot loop showing that message over and over until I pull the battery, boot into download mode and then hit cancel so the phone boots up normally. Currently I do not have a recovery menu at all, not stock, and not custom.

Ok, installed Mobile Odin, first thing it said was to make sure I have the proper boot loader or it could result in a soft brick. Now it shows me the different partitions, one of them being "recovery"... Now what file exactly should I be using? Do I flash it to that partition or do I just use the" Open file" option? Can you guide me through it at all? I appreciate all your help thus far!
Edit: I believe I found the correct file to flash... Please correct me if I'm wrong but being that I have the T-Mobile version of the Note 3, my boot loader should not be locked right? So I should be able to flash this file *n9005-cwm-recovery-6.0.4.7-kk(0125).tar* using mobile odin, and all should be good, right? I would post the link but I'm a new user and cant... But this is the description of the file: SM-N9005/SM-N900T/SM-N900P Qualcomm Note 3 – CWM Recovery -*Download*-*Credits*(Also works for T-Mobile/Sprint)

I have never personally used Mobile Odin, but you need to flash the recovery's tar file in the software.

You my dear friend, have my everlasting gratitude! I now have a working cwm recovery! Maybe I should make a quick guide to show how to root and flash custom recovery without a computer... Lord knows I could have used a guide like that. Thank you Feral....

Trouble reflashing ASUS stock ROM for ZE551KL

I accidentally tried doing a factory reset, and flashing an incorrect rom. So I lost the stock rom, and have no other rom to use. I tried using TWRP to flash ASUS's stock firmware from asus's support website, under firmware. Using firmware file: "UL-Z00T-WW-1.16.40.763-user.zip"
but TWRP tells me "E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/TWRP/Stock.zip'
Error flashing '/sdcard/TWRP/Stock.zip"
I still have access to both adb, fastboot, and TWRP but I cant get an OS to install.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, haven't even had this phone a day yet, and already may have broken it.
I don't have an answer to your question , just got this phone yesterday and am in the process of figuring out how to root and install a custom recovery for this specific device.. I have found many methods to root but none for my specific model. I think you have the same model as I do and was hoping you could lead me to the place that will give me the files I need.. the box my phone came in has the model as ASUS_Z00TD (ZE551KL).. Sorry I wasn't of any help to you, hope you manage to figure out how to flash something that will get your device running again!

Happy to know that it works for you.
Whenever you got stuck in this situation, just flash stock recovery & you will able to flash stock rom again.

Do yo mean this stock recovery? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64441364&postcount=9
How do I flash it? just "fastboot flash recovery stock_recovery.img" ?
If so, I've tried that, and TWRP still boot when I try to enter recovery. Also, once I've flashed the stock recovery, do I just place the firmware on the root of the sdcard as 'update.zip' and try to install it from there?
Thanks for your help already, and sorry about the repetitive questions!
