[Q] Flash Stock Recovery - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I have my Nexus 4 with CWM + SuperSU and I want to ask about flash Stock Recovery..
When i choose reboot on CWM it says if I want to prevent the phone from flashing the Stock Recovery. I saw somewhere that we'll have Android 5.0 in September, I know I need to be Stock ROM, Stock Recovery, etc.. So can I just choose "no" and my Nexus 4 will flash automatically on the Stock Recovery?? or I need to manually flash via fastboot..
Another thing is: Do I need to unroot, or OTA will override the Root??
Thanks a lot, Sorry for bad English..

You are thinking too far ahead. When 5.0 will come out, there will be flashable zips available long before you get the official OTA update, so there's no need for the stock recovery.

Ok, but flash via Fastboot, or use the CWM option is the same or no?

Rooting from Linux without CWM?

I want to root my N7 directly from Linux, but I don't want to replace recovery with CWM. I like CWM on my phone, but I understand it won't allow OTA stock upgrades which I expect will be important for a while on the N7.
I've already unlocked the bootloader, but I haven't seen any instructions for rooting from Linux without replacing the standard recovery with CWM.
Can't you just flash CWM, root, and then reflash stock recovery?

There won't be any OTA that is not quickly (if not before it is released) will be available is a flashable download on XDA and other forums.
You are not going to miss anything.
You can as already posted, reflash the stock recovery, but again, whats the point.

Verizon 4.4 OTA

I pulled this from my phone and posted it in the other thread, and someone suggested I make a thread for it. Here it is!
http://j2cool.com/mirror/files/Blur_Version.139.15.1.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US.zip
To install, you will need to be on the latest OTA (camera update).
Fastboot flash the original system.img and recovery, img
You can then use the volume down key to select "Recovery"
Once in recovery, press the power button and volume buttons together to bring up the menu, and select "Install from SDcard"
You can then select the OTA, and install it. Your phone will reboot, and you will have to do this again from the new recovery. You should then be able to reboot system and have your new 4.4 Kitkat Moto X!

You don't need boot.img in either. Now, I don't know how the dev ed works, maybe it's just the exact same with an unlocked bootloader, so let me know how installing goes.

Because it's a large zip file from somewhere no one has downloaded before. I promise you, it's safe and clean though.

Dev edition you can install like any other device. The benefit is that you can flash custom files without recovery flipping its ****.

Put the zip in internal storage. Go into stock recovery, install zip, choose this update zip. Because one of the first things it does it flash a new recovery, you have to go into recovery again and install zip again (the second time around it knows it doesn't have to flash the recovery).
Of course, since this way uses stock recovery, you have to be running stock.
I'm on stock just rooted with unlocked bootloader twrp 2.6.3 installed will I lose root

Yes, you're going to lose root (the update will wipe out System). If you have an unlocked bootloader then it isn't a big deal -- just re-root after the update.
BUT don't try to flash this update with twrp installed. 1) I'm pretty sure it won't work anyway b/c it needs to verify that your System is stock and, at the very least, installing twrp changes the install-recovery script which is in System 2) this .zip file is made to be flashed from a stock recovery, so I'm not sure it would work 3) as I said before, part of this update is a new recovery - I'm not sure how well the process would go if you started from twrp
And how would I root after its done

The same way you rooted before?
I'm sorry, I've been assuming you have a Dev edition b/c you said you had twrp -- is that not the case? If you do NOT have a dev edition and you rooted via pwn- or rock- or whatever its called myMoto then NO, you will NOT be able to root after the update until someone releases another hack

I got this the second time (with the new recovery):
"Install aborted"
:|
Maybe the battery level is too low, so i'm gonna charge it a little and see what happens
PS: the "normal" OTA is downloading SO slow D: that's why i'm trying the one in this thread
------EDIT----
For some reason the download speed just increased, so i'm staying with it
I cannot flash this in TWRP right?

Im still using the twrp that was flashed with freegee. i'm a newb to all this. Maybe i should flash new version of twrp and try. I was trying to install the mal 4.2.2 rom and just got lg screen, then black.

I've been unsuccessful in getting any roms to work. I tried 4.2.2 rom and got lg screen then black, had to restore nand backup from twrp recovery but it was hellish to get into, had to do the hold vol+pwr precisely, almost gave up. So, reverted to a backup just fine.
Next tried to loki_flash recovery 2.6.3.1 (then was going to do them in order-2.6.3.2>2.6.3.3 [have not tried going directly to 2.6.3.3) and was hit with an unsupported aboot error (device mismatch).
So now i'm going to try and use flash tool to revert back to 11A, root, install twrp (I hope this is possible and I don't brick my phone [i'm new to all of this])
Anyone tell me if this is an acceptable option to proceed? Thank's in advance.
Acceptable. KDZ to 11A.
Just wanted to post I was successful using lg flash tool to revert to 11A, rooted, freegee twrp, flashed 2.6.3.3, flashed OSE ROM. Everything is well ATM!

TWRP will not work on the OTA, yet. However, there is a working CWM in the HD forum. I flashed it to my M and have zero issues with it.

I flashed the CWM recovery too...it does boot to recovery
but it seems to be some problem with CM11 package, the assert check shows my device ID is empty so the recovery just abort the installation.
I want to flash CM11-m6 snapshot....any ideas?

CM11 won't work if you've updated. Apparently, the boot loader is updated and the ROMs haven't been updated for it.

You have an unlocked BL, just flash SU to get root, and delete/freeze apps. That's pretty much what I did and used Xposed on top of that.
I haven't tried it yet, buy couldn't you just rsd back to an earlier build then flash your custom ROM?

I fastboot flash the lastest CWM recovery, but it didn't work for the CM 4.4.2 ROM, and twrp, it didn't work again. why? does the VFW rom change something?

It means that none of the ROMs out right now will work with the new CWM. Also, quit trying flash TWRP. TWRP is not compatible with the new KK, yet.
Got it, many thanks
Root
My xt907 Has the OTA 4.4 update and an unlocked BL. I don't have a custom recovery installed anymore. Is it possible to flash SU or superuser and get root with fastboot. If so. Please help! Thanks. I'm ok with flashing CWN if need be. I just want root to install a Xposed and remove bloatware.

I'm pretty sure you can use fastboot/ADB to sideload zips, though I'm not super familiar with the commands so I wouldn't know how to explain it to you.
I am familiar enough with the commands, but I am unable to find the zips to flash. any help would be great.
Thanks,

I was one of the people who thought it would be cool to update to the OTA immediately without waiting and reading... I got the CWM recovery going and rooted stock 4.2.2 , but I really cant wait for TWRP to get updated so I can get back to my Rom, or really any supported Rom would be better then stock. I have only myself to blame.

That is incorrect, you can get an OTA with an unlocked bootloader, but you must have stock recovery on an official ROM. If you are already rooted it is a coin toss, depends what has been changed, it may work or it may fail, but you will lose root.
That being said, many root methods replace recovery, so it is best to not take an OTA if you have modified your system from stock if you really don't know what you are doing, either flash stock images when they come available manually, or wait and flash radios/bootloader manually and use a custom ROM... it is, after all, a Nexus device.

Easiest to download the lollipop factory image and flash in bootloader, then you don't need OTA. Backup your data first!
If you insist on using the OTA, you'll have to first lay your hands on flashable zips / images of Stock recovery and kernel, flash them in cwm/ bootloader, then install the OTA.
Theres also a flashable zip of lollipop (search for thread in xda) that you can flash in cwm.
Tried to use fastboot (flashed bootloader) but I got no menu in recovery options, when I chose 'Recovery mode' in bootloader, I only see that dead android with a question mark, but nothing happens when I press volume down or volume up. Any idea?

The dead android screen is the stock recovery, to see the menu press and hold Power button, then press volume up.
