flash a custom recovery, then boot into it and flash a rom. there wasnt any need for the root toolkit considering all you have to do to root any nexus is fastboot oem unlock, fastboot a custom recovery, flash a custom rom, and reboot.

easiest way.. download the goo manager app from the market, free. open it, give it root permission when it asks, press the menu button(three dots on the top right), press install openrecovery script, press yes, let it do its thing, now twrp recovery is installed
fastboot would be the method to install it when youre just rooting. but if you are already rooted, through goo manager is the easiest way to install twrp recovery.

I found I had to reflash the recovery ROM every time I made a backup or flash with goo. Using ROM manager now and works fine.

Just got my 32GB Nexus 7 and am in the process of rooting and of course i will be no doubt trying out custom ROM's i see Paranoid Android and Liquid Smooth both of which i have used (current PA) for the Galaxy S3 also have ROM's for the Nexus 7, anyway i will be selling my laptop and just using the Nexus from here on in, my question is, is it recommended to download Goo Manager to download and Install ROM's, etc, i usually use CWM but am aware that Goo Manager seems to be the more updated and popular choice thesedays and seen as im new to the Nexus i thought you folks could offer some assistance here.

Don't need goo manager to flash roms it is just like ROM manger to a degree. I only use it to install the latest twrp recovery and to to check for ROM updates. Seem like u already know how to flash so I won't get into that. Use this site and are others to get ROMs for our n7 store them in a folder ( I have one title Roms) and flash as normal.

Download it from the thread and boot into recovery manually. I wouldn't use goo or ROM manager to flash anything. You did already unlock the boot loader and flash a custom recovery correct? This requires a PC.

Also use CWM to flash roms. I use goo to check if there are ROM updates.
I didn't flash custom recovery but yeah unblocked the bootloader and rooted, cool I'll install cwm then.

You can only install a custom recovery after being rooted. And the only way to root is to flash a superuser package with you guessed it, a custom recovery. You can't just install ROM manager and flash a custom recovery. You have to manually flash one with fastboot on a PC.

Flash PA rom.
step 1 went okay,
afterwards i tried to go to recovery mode inorder to backup but i got the lying android with the red warning sign.
I did backup using Rom Manager and nexus 4 toolkit but I'm worried I can't get to recovery mode if something goes wrong.
How shall I proceed before flashing the rom?
The robot lying on it's back is the stock recovery. You need to flash CWM/TWRP before you can do a Nandroid

Do yourself a favour and learn how to use ADB instead of toolkits that do more harm than good if used by inexperienced users and you`ll learn to do it the right way.

If you have Rom Manager Installed and are rooted you should be able to install CWM thru it.

I did explore the Recovery Setup but wasn't able to do anything usefull.

according to ROM Manager you already have CWM installed and its up to date. Have you tried booting into recovery using ROM Manager?
When I press reboot to recovery directly from rom manager it works...
I'm just affraid that in case that I brick or mess up something I won't be able to get to stock recovery mode.
volume down + power button = bootloader (android on his back) also called fastboot mode
use volume buttons to scroll to recovery then press power button to select it
you should then be in CWM recovery if its installed correctly.
If you are using a custom recovery your stock recovery is gone. You would have to use fastboot to flash the stock recovery image back onto the phone. Its rather simple to do as is flashing the stock image file back onto the phone.

There is a bug that restores the stock recovery after a reboot and there should be an option in the root toolkit to fix it. Not saying this is what happened but it may have. The stock recovery is stored in system memory somewhere and the bug fix just removes it so it won't restore itself after reboot.
Follow efrants guide for ADB and fastboot

I call it a bug because its an annoying feature. There are a number of threads no how to remove it but using a toolkit to do it is just as easy.

but after I've read what you wrote about the bug I open the nexus root tool kit and then I realized what I should have done.
I pressed Custom recovery checkbox and rooted again.

Glad you got it working. I would still learn adb and fastboot. Though I too use the tool kit every now and then out of convenience.

I read online that i need to change a file name within the system which helps to stick the custom recovery, how do i do this? BTW im not rooted and its my first time :laugh:

To do that you need root, because if you don't change those files the stock recovery will be back every time.

Yes, you can root without flashing a custom recovery. The first step is to obtain root access. The next step of installing a custom recovery (i.e. CWM or TWRP) is to flash ROMs and Kernels. You can just stop at ROOT.
FYI - There are stock and very close to stock ROMs available. Once Android 4.4 is released by Goggle, it does not take long (1-2 days) before people have the 4.4 available for flashing especially for the stock or close to stock ROMs. The more customized ROMs may take a little longer to have Android 4.4 ported into their ROMs.

The command posted "fastboot boot boot.img" would boot your device once into a custom recovery without actually installing the recovery. From there, you can use the one-time booted recovery to install a root zip.

I'm unlocked and rooted on the latest 4.3. N10 is so fast I don't feel the need for a custom rom at this present time.
N-Cry tool kit was the easiest I tried.

First you need to download the latest supersu. Then you need to download a custom recovery from here: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.5-manta.img
Place it on your C: drive.
Then go to fastboot and type:
Fastboot boot recovery C:/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.5-manta.img
Then select recovery with the volume buttons and press the power button.
In recovery flash the latest supersu you downloaded.
! Wipe cache and dalvik cache !
Reboot.
You're now rooted and still have the stock recovery.

Open your cmd, copy the recovery to your fastboot folder then cd to it. After that type:

I originally rooted my N10 (running 4.2.2) using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938 without unlocking the bootloader first...
No idea if it works on 4.3 or not, though...

Will any of these methods work for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, or are there any other ways? I want to gain root and upgrade when updates come out as well, but we have no custom recovery yet for the Tab 4. I wonder if I could fast boot with the custom recovery for Tab 3 if it will work?

There is an app called towel root, basically what it does is temp root your phone. It doesnt work on android L, but it works on kitkat and below...

TWRP will not work on the OTA, yet. However, there is a working CWM in the HD forum. I flashed it to my M and have zero issues with it.

I flashed the CWM recovery too...it does boot to recovery
but it seems to be some problem with CM11 package, the assert check shows my device ID is empty so the recovery just abort the installation.
I want to flash CM11-m6 snapshot....any ideas?

CM11 won't work if you've updated. Apparently, the boot loader is updated and the ROMs haven't been updated for it.

You have an unlocked BL, just flash SU to get root, and delete/freeze apps. That's pretty much what I did and used Xposed on top of that.
I haven't tried it yet, buy couldn't you just rsd back to an earlier build then flash your custom ROM?

None of the ROMs have been updated to work with the new recovery. Just give it time.

It means that none of the ROMs out right now will work with the new CWM. Also, quit trying flash TWRP. TWRP is not compatible with the new KK, yet.

I'm pretty sure you can use fastboot/ADB to sideload zips, though I'm not super familiar with the commands so I wouldn't know how to explain it to you.
I am familiar enough with the commands, but I am unable to find the zips to flash. any help would be great.

I was one of the people who thought it would be cool to update to the OTA immediately without waiting and reading... I got the CWM recovery going and rooted stock 4.2.2 , but I really cant wait for TWRP to get updated so I can get back to my Rom, or really any supported Rom would be better then stock. I have only myself to blame.
