Is it possible to have root without installing a custom recovery? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone.
I want to root 4.3 but I dont want to install CWM or TWR or another custom recovery. I want to keep stock recovery so I can directly update from Google when 4.4 is released.
Is there any way I can root without having a custom recovery?
Thanks for the help.

Yes, you can root without flashing a custom recovery. The first step is to obtain root access. The next step of installing a custom recovery (i.e. CWM or TWRP) is to flash ROMs and Kernels. You can just stop at ROOT.
FYI - There are stock and very close to stock ROMs available. Once Android 4.4 is released by Goggle, it does not take long (1-2 days) before people have the 4.4 available for flashing especially for the stock or close to stock ROMs. The more customized ROMs may take a little longer to have Android 4.4 ported into their ROMs.

You can also try Wugfresh's Nexus Toolkit http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/, which I have used and it works well, or the Nexus 10 Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001868

The command posted "fastboot boot boot.img" would boot your device once into a custom recovery without actually installing the recovery. From there, you can use the one-time booted recovery to install a root zip.

Yes.
I'm unlocked and rooted on the latest 4.3. N10 is so fast I don't feel the need for a custom rom at this present time.
N-Cry tool kit was the easiest I tried.

First you need to download the latest supersu. Then you need to download a custom recovery from here: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.5-manta.img
Place it on your C: drive.
Then go to fastboot and type:
Fastboot boot recovery C:/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.5-manta.img
Then select recovery with the volume buttons and press the power button.
In recovery flash the latest supersu you downloaded.
! Wipe cache and dalvik cache !
Reboot.
You're now rooted and still have the stock recovery.

One last doubt. When you say place the recovery img in C: you mean on my PC or on the Nexus 10?
Thanks again.
EDIT: I tried following your instructions but didnt manage to boot into the custom recovery. Maybe Im missing some step in cmd.

Doesn't that require you to unlock your bootloader first? (and therefore wipe everything from the N10)
I originally rooted my N10 (running 4.2.2) using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938 without unlocking the bootloader first...
No idea if it works on 4.3 or not, though...

I'm not sure if it requires unlocked BL. You can try, if it doesn't work, then you shall backup and unlock. But I believe it will work .

Will any of these methods work for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, or are there any other ways? I want to gain root and upgrade when updates come out as well, but we have no custom recovery yet for the Tab 4. I wonder if I could fast boot with the custom recovery for Tab 3 if it will work?

flash a custom recovery, then boot into it and flash a rom. there wasnt any need for the root toolkit considering all you have to do to root any nexus is fastboot oem unlock, fastboot a custom recovery, flash a custom rom, and reboot.

easiest way.. download the goo manager app from the market, free. open it, give it root permission when it asks, press the menu button(three dots on the top right), press install openrecovery script, press yes, let it do its thing, now twrp recovery is installed
fastboot would be the method to install it when youre just rooting. but if you are already rooted, through goo manager is the easiest way to install twrp recovery.

This is my game plan as well....Make sure I have the latest TWRP and Super SU before I attempt to re-root.
EDIT: I forgot, I switched from the Super SU app to the superuser app from clockworkmod a while back.
TWRP updated to 2.6.0.0
Superuser already at 1.0.1.8
re-downloaded superuser.zip (unknown version)
Ready for the 4.3 OTA.

Can you upload the SuperSu zip file you used to root?
I have exactly the same problem. Before updating to 4.3 I've booted CWM and did a nand backup.
After updating I can't boot into CWM or TWRP to flash the root zip. I get a blank screen instead of the recovery menu.
I don't want to flash a recovery, just boot like thousands times before to flash the root.zip from chainfire that works.
Same problem : I get a blank screen when booting CWM
I can connect with adb, backlights turns off after some time, and on again if I press a key.
I can boot in the recovery after flashing it !
So booting a flashed recovery from the bootloader works, but booting it with "fastboot boot" don't...

Coming back to the subject of this thread, I was NOT able to boot into TWRP from fastboot using the command:
fastboot boot openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-mako.img
the n4 was starting but I was just getting a black screen.
I had to flash the recovery to my nexus 4 with:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-mako.img
and after that I was able to boot as usual to the recovery and install chainfire modified .zip to gain root in android 4.3
Any other is experiencing this problem with booting into recovery on N4 ?
On my nexus 7 I was able to boot as usual into the recovery, without flashing it
@bagl0312 How I wrote, I have exactly the same problem. I will going to flash twrp, flash root zip and flash back the stock recovery for now.
Never the less fastboot boot recovery.img does not work atm

No Custom Recovery for KitKat 4.4

Just an FYI. I have an unlocked bootloader and had a good working version of TWRP 2.7.0.0 I planned to reinstall after I took the OTA. I get no errors when I flash it; however, when I try to enter recovery, I can only get into the new stock recovery..

TWRP needs to be updated.
It's easier to flash SuperSU through recovery then to push it through ADB, but you must boot straight into recovery right after you flash it.
I dont know if you use fastboot or Mfastboot.

When you press enter, hold volume up to enter recovery and flash SuperSU.
Thank you. I don't have mfastboot installed but fastboot worked fine. Now rooted and debloated!

Hi folks!
Where find I one SuperSU.zip file to root my device through ADB SIDELOAD (stock recovery)?

I don't wanna install a custom recovery neither unlock the boot loader.
Is it possible?

You can just boot into the custom recovery
fastboot boot recovery.img. You'll just boot into and not install it. Once you boot into it flash supersu. You're retain the stock recovery. You can then re-lock the bootloader if you want.
Oh, as an fyi, when you take an ota you do lose root so you may want to consider leaving the bootloader unlocked so you don't have to wipe your device again after the ota if you want to root it again

If you need your stock recovery your already rooted and have a custom recovery in place. So therefore your device has an unlocked boot loader. Flashify can flash recovery IMG without even powering into recovery.
