Is an S$ with More Bands Coming - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I seem to recall reading somewhere (but now I can't find it) that SprinT is coming out with an S4 with greater capability - i.e., some new LTE band, perhaps the former Nextel band?
I'm eligible for an upgrade, but don't want to buy if there is a revision coming shortly.
Anyone know anything about this?

Isn't nextel 800 frequency and I believe the current gs4 is capable of it. I may be wrong.

The current S4 is capable of the 800 frequency that iden was using. Once activated our phone is capable. In Korea they have the S4 with the Snapdragon 800 processor that is capable of lte advanced network, but no carrier in the US even has a LTE advanced network so it doesn't matter. Korea always has the newest and best tech.

Its capable of 800 voice. This device only supports band 25 1900 lte. Sprint has equipment up for 800 data but wont be running for a while. That's from multiple places on s4gru. They won't get a multi band lte device for a few months.

You probably read about the new S4 coming out in Korea with a 2.3ghz processor, as said above the Snapdragon 800, that'll be running on Korea's first (first ever in the world actually) commercial LTE-A network. I don't think Sprint would be rolling out a new network with their LTE still being very limited.

Yes that's what I said in my post. That is the lte advanced S4 and will not be in the USA because we don't have any lte advanced networks here.

Okay just so we are all clear, everyone can mark my words, there will not be a newer better Sprint S4 coming out thats supports any LTEA network. That phone will be in Korea because they have cell networks that can support LTEA phones. This is what the current S4 supports for Sprint LTE: Band 25; CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev.A: 800/850/1900MHz; HSPA+/UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100MHz; GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
I should have made it clear that I was talking about this CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev.A: 800/850/1900MHz when I said our phones support the 800 spectrum that used to be iDEN.

Look at my post above it shows what lte band is supported and which CDMA spectrum is supported. The S4 does not support 800MHz lte data.

I don't understand your response - isn't what I said consistent with your post?
The S4 does not support 800 Mhz LTE, but Sprint will have 800 Mhz LTE by the end of the year. Isn't this a problem - Sprint will be utilizing 800 Mhz for data because it is better at penetrating buildings, but the S4 will not support that band?

But it will still use 1900. You will still have lte. Cant wait for 800. 1900 seems to be like wimax a lot. Dropping off inside

Any NYC T-Mobile USA owners getting 3G on their Samsung galaxy note using 1900MHz/850MHz HSPA+ 84?
The Note would need to have the 1.7 Ghz Module accessible, while the hardware is capable, the drivers/software has not been developed to allow support. You need both 2.1 GHz and 1.7GHz to make T-Mobile 3g work. 1700MHz band (actually its 1710MHz -1755MHz) is the upload freq, and the 2100MHz band (2110MHz - 2155MHz) the download. You need both or T-Mobile will kick the phone into Edge only(850Mhz).

T-Mobile is supposedly testing out non-aws band for their data service and he's simply asking if anyone has tried it in nyc

If someone was getting T-Mobile 3G on the 1900 band, don't you think someone would have posted it by now?
Nope. I'm still only getting EDGE in/near NYC. And slow EDGE at that.
I've been switching back and forth between my T-Mobile SIM and an AT&T mvno SIM. I'm getting decent speeds with the latter but dreaming T-Mobile will come through with the 1900mhz 3G.
Any updates on this? Some markets like Pittsburgh have this already right?
I keep hearing end of the year. My understanding is that T-Mobile is working to get current 2G users off the 1900Mhz band before refarming can occur. They had a pilot program in a couple of markets and there was some rumbling of a national rollout of that program possibly in September. I follow this very closely and there is still nothing concrete. I just asked about this in a T-Mobile store and they said they are expecting further information, but nothing yet, They are moving as quickly as they can as they need the iPhone and can't get it until the refarm is done.

I heard that the Sprint variant of the S3 has a sim slot since its an international phone. All you have to do is root and unlock it and it should work on T-Mobile 4G.

That's not an accurate statement but it makes the point—non-T-Mobile GS3s won't work on T-Mobile's 3G/4G until they redeploy from 1700 to 1900 MHz.
T-Mobile hasn't put out a time table. AFAIK parts of downtown San Francisco (around the Moscone Center), parts of San Diego, and parts of Birmingham, Alabama (i.e. relatively nowhere) are the only places TMO has this configuration deployed.
That's not exactly true parts of Bellevue and Seattle Washington have been reformed too so I'm sure there's more areas

It did actually, AT&T and T-Mobile are gsm, while Verizon and sprint are cdma... completely different services. Your only choice is an AT&T, T-Mobile or a gsm international.

it did not.. i got a gsm phone from at&t thats unlocked to work on tmo. but i cant get it to work on tmo 4G.. thats why he didnt answer my question.
Look up t mobile 1900 mhz refarming. Thats ur best shot. Other than that right now signs are pointing to no hardware support for t mobiles currnt hspa bands. Basically, cross your fingers that tmobile changes to your frequency in your area with this phone. Tmobiles doin cuz they want to steal awayviphine users so they do have incentive. We'll be on that train too tho.

Never, probably… I don't have a source (you can Google it) but T-Mobile does not have enough spectrum in NYC to do much shuffling.

No, it won't.
The Sprint model apparently does not work. The AT&T may work later this year depending on your area. Are you asking whether you want to make a $500+ bet that it will? That's up to you—I wouldn't.

1) It works on the frequencies you posted. Let's rewrite that:
GSM/EDGE (aka 2G): 850, 900, 1800, 1900 Mhz
UMTS/HSPA+ (aka 3G/4G): 850, 1700 (aka AWS), 1900 MHz
Is it less confusing now?
2) AT&T uses 850 Mhz and 1900 MHz for their HSPA+ service.
3) TMO as of July 2012 uses 1700 MHz for most their HSPA+ service. T-Mobile will support HSPA+ on 1900 MHz in some parts of the USA by the end of the year. Very few areas (T-Mobile has only officially disclosed a tower near the Moscone Center, in San Francisco) do so now. Concrete details are sparse and nonspecific.
4) Next year is a long time—the SGS3 will be old by then, and the Galaxy Note 2 or SGS4 will have been announced. Nobody can predict the future. But, looking at the past, TMO released a new "4G" version of the Vibrant, so it's also likely they release new "LTE" versions of their phones.

TMO is doing their 1900 MHz refarming to free up 1700 MHz for use w/ LTE. Stuff I'm wondering:
What happens to older 3G/4G devices that don't support 1900 MHz? Do they lose their 3G/4G Internet? Note: the GS3 supports 1900 MHz, and does not have this problem.
How is TMO going to deploy in spectrum crunched areas (like NYC)? They don't have enough spectrum to move everyone over to 1900 MHz—does this mean 1700 MHz HSPA+ will be cut off when they bring 1700 MHz LTE online? Your non-LTE GS3 might lose 3G/4G Internet in this situation—but I doubt TMO would do this to anyone with a phone still in contract.
All in all, make your purchasing situation on the situation today. The next new thing is always around the corner.

hi tamasrepus... just to let you know, when i called the tmo rep like i told you in my previous post, he said that the SGS3 will use LTE.. but after your answers discredited him, i dont believe him. i guess we got to wait and see.

But LTE is a gsm technology, currently sprints/Verizons phone (Verizon razr maxx works on international/att networks after a recent update) is a hybrid, but they have weird lte frequencies, I've read that all US carriers will have incompatible freqs, but qualcom is building a chip that does them all plus European ones.

It's simple, T mobile phone works on At&t HSPA but not LTE. At&t phone works on its own HSPA and LTE but not T moble 1700 HSPA. We've been trying to see if we can make it work on t mobiles 1700 hspa band, no luck yet. To make matters more uncertain. T mobile says they're refarming their 2g/edge spectrum to work on At&t's 1900 HSPA band. The At&t phone out of the box would be able to pick up this 1900 HSPA t mobile refarm. Although reports of this actually occuring are sporadic and they also fired the CEO who's plan it is a couple weeks ago. LoL. If you get that, that's the complete break down. So here you go:
T mobile phone - Supports both T mobile and At&t HSPA 4g speeds, no LTE of any kind.
At&t phone- Supports At&t LTE and HSPA only right now, t mobile HSPA "may" be available for it's antenna's in the future.

Nexus 4 using 1800 frequncy ?

My cell provider uses 1800 frequncy for 4G LTE and I read some where that the nexus 4 uses 1700 or something .. So my question is am I able to connect to 4G somehow ? I live in kuwait and my provider is called "zain"

Its a hardware limitation as there are no signal amplifiers and filters installed except for band 4 AWS which are included in the chipset. This works basically only on T-Mobile LTE at 1900 MHz in the US. This issue has been discussed to death in this forum and is very old news.

So.. correct me if this is wrong; the Nexus4 supports AWS HSPA+ out of the box (aka T-Mobile), but also can be modded to support LTE on the same band- which many other carriers besides T-Mobile use.
This is very rare, isn't it? Because in every other commercially-released device, these two features are pretty much mutually-exclusive. If you buy a phone that supports AWS out of the box from T-Mobile or a Canadian carrier like Mobilicity it has no LTE support because those carriers don't offer it. If you buy a device with LTE support from a larger carrier like AT&T or Telus, it has no support for AWS at lower speeds because its carrier doesn't use them.
So the Nexus4 would be the only device to support both these carriers at maximum network speeds?

With the AT&T version you can see that AT&T only gets HSDPA up to 21Mbps whereas the Canada version with the same bands gets up to 42Mbps
Question : Based on the Dev edition bands it looks like it should get DC- HSPA at 42 Mbps....is that right ??
I'd love to know that when I'm in an area with poor LTE coverage I can at least expect to get DC-HSPA speeds up to 42Mbps.

I would guess its dc 42 by default and att rom/ modem restritcs to 21
Its the same hardware but cant be 100% sure until we get the devices.
that's because ATTs hspa+ network maxes out at 21. So if you're on att thats max you can get. Regardless of radio. You're not going to pull speeds that aren't available.

Hi wrong! The specs stated there is the maximum bandwidth not the network's maximum speed. It would be a bad marketing for HTC if they were to put 21 if the true maximum speed is up to 42mbps. Take note that the numbers game plays with marketing perfectly.
And also HSPA+ is different than DC-HSDPA.
DC-HSDPA is a next generation HSPA+ where the bandwidth was doubled. And HTC stating that AT&T version doesn't get DC-HSDPA only means that it has different modem chipset than the others since there's no way to limit or multiply a bandwidth through software means.
It's just like making a single core processor a dual core by modifying a software.

I'm not sure about the developer edition but the specs page of HTC was updated likely 19 hours ago.

Hi wrong. Yea I don't know what you're trying to say. He asked about the att variant so I assumed he was on att. Which doesnt do dc-hspa+ . So if he's thinking he can buy the dev version and pull down 42, which I assumed was the purpose of the post, on att its not going to happen. I'm not sure were you got your marketing degree but Bad marketing would be if HTC would to say on the att variant specs that you can get anything more than 21 with the phone locked down to atts network. Imagine all the upset people on att suing them when they cant pull down 42 they claim on specs because atts network isn't built for 42. Not good marketing. The phone is for att and that's the maximum speed att gives so HTC is going to post it as the maximum speed for the att one. Simple..

Anyways what if AT&T would somehow decide to upgrade their HSDPA speeds in the next 6 months? Or maybe announce tomorrow that they will upgrade it soon? Isn't it a big down for HTC? The specs made there are not specs of the network where the phone is to be used. It's the specs of the phone itself. You can't advertise a phone that it doesn't have LTE only just because the networks that will be used in it doesn't support it right?

The qualcomm MDM chipset has different versions.
Anandtech alone confirmed that the Asian version & the UK version has different MDM chipsets used.
Receive diversity is mandatory for LTE, but even the UMTS/WCDMA only One includes it since is is again required in part to enable the all metal design. All of the One models are based on Qualcomm’s 28nm 2nd generation LTE baseband, the MDM9x15 platform we’ve seen a bunch of, and its DC-HSPA+/GSM-only (LTE blocks fused off) sibling, MDM8215 for the UMTS/WCDMA only model. This is a big step up from the international edition of the One X and One X+ which both shipped without receive diversity and were based on the aging Intel/Infineon XMM6260 platform.

You guys are basing facts on assumptions that came from others while I am basing it on technicalities. So I guess I'll leave it out on others to decide which they think is correct.
And yeah AT&T isn't using UL version. You can go to this thread instead

I don't know how we got off topic but Yes. The specs ARE of the network that they are to be used on since a carrier variant is tied to a specific carrier. Listen, You can't advertise a phone being able to download 42mbps on a network that doesn't have it. Its false advertising to tell att customers that they can get 42mbps with this phone. Which is what they would be saying if att one specs said 42 instead of 21. And what I was trying to clarify to the OP that he's not going to get. It doesn't matter if it had a chip capable of 1 million mbps. Its a phone meant specifically to be used on att and att can only do 21 so that's all they're going to tell you the phone can do because that's all you(the general public) need to know. As for your last sentence, You can and they do. Just Look at the nexus 4. No LTE advertising but LTE capable. If att was deciding they wanted to upgrade their network it wouldn't be a big down for HTC. All they would have to do is change the Att one specs on their site.
And att variant and dev edition are the same. Both the UL version. WL is cdma. Sprint.

ATT stopped working on hspa.
Its LTE right now and a bud of mine told me they are currently turning on LTE Advanced. In my area they already turned it on but no press release though. You just see a minor speed bump until lte advanced chips are supported

I didn't realise my post would cause such a kerfuffle...I'm in Canada and simply wanted to know based on official specs provided whether the Dev edition would pull in DC-HSDPA speeds on Telus network that supports this dual channel technology

The reason why att variant advertises different speeds even though theyre the same m7-ul model was given in the first 2 responses. Unlocked models don't advertise speed because there's no carrier to advertise for. The thread took a turn for the worst when, for whatever reason, someone decided they were going to hijackand and fill the thread with "facts" based on misinformation.

In case no one answered the OP, the answer is NO. Unless the published specs are wrong, it will not operate on the 1700/2100 band. I believe that is the same technology used by T-Mobile?
Does anyone know if this would work on Verizon Wireless?

I asked Brian Klug, the author of the Anandtech review, this exact question and here is my question and his response.
"Hey Brian I have a quick question for you. Will the unlocked editions support HSPA+ 42?"
"The developer unlocked edition is only 21.1 single carrier 64QAM from what I know (AT&T variant)."
Judging by his review he's a lot smarter than I am so I'll take his word until we have confirmation otherwise.

It always has. You just had to be in the refarmed 1900 or the LTE areas to get better than 2G.

That's disappointing... I really was hoping to have the 2 current best speeds for the One...LTE and upto 42Mbps.
Im with Telus and beginning to wonder if I should sacrifice 32Gb of storage and go with a Telus LTE/42Mbps device

It is 21 if using AWS on the T-Mobile system. I don't know what it gets on ATT.

I'm about to get SG-S4!!
I read through the forum, didn't find a sold answer if SHV-E300S with Exynos 5 (Octa) will work with LTE in US!
Can anyone please let us know...

If you want to:
-Pay 200 dollars more expensive(import tax + local seller commission)
-Have a bigger size(korea version is thicker than us one) and have stupid korea restriction(sms limitation, etc...)
-Take a phone who only support Korea 4G frequency and imcompatible with all other country
You can surely go for this version. No problem!!!

Hi, since you have the korea version, please show us more pictures about its size, what difference does he have other than the fact he get overclocked processor and compatible LTE? Some physical difference? Bigger than us one? Thicker? Some restrictions? Do you mean that with your app, you can use 4G LTE in the US and in other countries? Also where did you buy your phone? How much does it cost? Thank you.
The overclocked processor settings was dropped before it's release. It's now 4 cores at 1.6 and 4 cores at 1.2. I'm guessing because of heat issues.
Just doing a backup will make the phone heat up quick. Plus, the battery life isn't good.
I should have waited two more months before buying a S4.
I too want to have the octa core S4 with LTE to use in the US and don't want to settle for anything less. Some sources say that the S4 Exynos octa-core supports 20 LTE bands, but often responses from people say that the Korean LTE S4 won't work with US LTE bands. Wiki contains some info on the S4 and LTE bands but I'm a noob so it's not clear to me why it is a definite no for LTE in the US.

I'm targetting to use the S4 on Tmobile LTE. So according to that info Tmobile supports 6 LTE bands, some of which are also listed under the K, L and S variations of the Korean S4. To me that sorta implies that Tmobile LTE would work, but then I'm a noob and not sure how that works out. I don't know how reliable the Wiki info is so it'll be great to know. I've also seen sources that say the Korean S4 supports LTE bands 1/4/7/17. The info are scattered around and carriers don't specifically release these info so that makes things even harder.
But assuming the wiki info is reliable, if you can explain how it works or not work would you please enlighten the rest of us. Thanks.

i have a shv-e300s too, and i have used lte because of skt hidden menu by switching to option lte all on the network mode because it doesnt have the option lte band 1 like your app do. and a few days ago my lte suddenly stopped working and i don't receive signals from my network when i switch to lte all. do i need to root it first? im from the Philippines by the way and my network use band 1 for lte thanks bro
