Hi,
Some of you Razr I owners might want to look at this.
Motorola Is Listening
http://www.beneaththewaves.net/Projects/Motorola_Is_Listening.html
Some commentary is available at:
Motorola cell phones are regularly phoning home
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5973282
I'm a bit concerned about this, although not sure whether the Razr I is affected.
Curious to see what other's people's opinions are?

I just saw that post about an hour ago; it's an interesting read.
There have been a couple of forum posts about Motorola customer service reps allegedly knowing that your phone is rooted when you call in for help/repairs/etc. This might be related.
I'm a bit concerned about this, although not sure whether the Razr I is affected.

Based on the strings in the article I'm guessing it is related to /system/app/cce.apk (com.motorola.blur.service.blur) - do you have this package or anything that sounds similar?
If so, are you able to block it with AFWall/DroidWall?
I'm attaching the manifest file from my copy (Droid Razr M running 4.1.1).
We should be "safe" if we use a custom rom without MotoBlur like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174731.
Craps.
I just connected to my Razr I (running 4.1.2 Retail.en.GB) with adb, and 'adb shell pm list packages' gives
Code:
package:com.motorola.blur.service.blur
package:com.motorola.blur.setup
package:com.motorola.blur.setupsettings
package:com.motorola.blur.updater
package:com.motorola.blur.weather
Running 'ls /system/app/cce*' in the shell also gave me this:
Code:
cce.apk
cce.odex
so a related version of the software may also be on the Razr I.
On my device there's :
com.motorola.android.omadrm
all the "suspicious" stuff i could find.
if you perform the debloater provided for Omar's rom motorola can't track you (i think)
omfg! haha!
can i block this?
Do they listen or not
Does anybody know for sure, if this is true for the Razr i as well?
Seems that not a lot of users care about, because every data goes to the NSA anyway
Thanks,
Marti

Probably RAZR i as well. Just use Omar ROM + debloater and everything seems to be fine.
I had run the debloater too but after reboot were the Motorola apps still at the razr I. The only difference I have seen was, that the settings were lost.
Do you have any idea what was wrong?

Not sure if this will help in anything, I have installed Network Log, in the first half hour, it has logged activity for the shown apps, I removed activity from FB and Google services though... What do the 'root' and 'kernel' apps represent? are these the ones being talked about here?

I had the same problem. And I tried it three or four times.
At the end I had a look which apps should have been removed and did it manually.
via RazR I & Tapatalk 4
Of course, I deactivated the automatic updates because I do not like any changes without my confirmation.
I had run the debloater several time but no change. Chrome I was able to de-install manually but for Google maps, this way didn't work.
In addition, I have some trouble in accessing the local memory. External sd-card no problem and root access to local memory too but e.g. the local download folder, I can access in recovery mode but in normal mode not.
If u use the ES-Fileexplorer u have to push it into system/app to get full access. And in settings u must allow rootaccess
I prefer Filemanager. There is no need to push it into system-folder and for me it is easier to use.
And ofcause u have to navigate to system/apps with the explorer and delete the apk and odex manually
via RazR I & Tapatalk 4
The back-port of the trebuchet file manager,I tried to but when I started, I will only get a blank white screen. About 3 minutes later, I will get a crash message. At the defy, I liked that explorer but not further.
With ES explorer,I have access to all the internal folder but downloads, music and so on, I do not find. Before I unlocked the boot loader, I hadn't seen this.
Root access isn't the problem.

I'm meant to be getting a brand new RAZRi in the next few days - I'll be doing tests on this myself and will report back if I find anything along the lines of what's in the OP.
It doesn't surprise me to be honest. Very crafty.
Wtf is this? Do anyone knows if samsung or htc does the same?

I'd assume so. I can't see Moto being the only ones.

I'm pretty interested in rooting my Droid X for things like custom ROMs, themes, and lowering voltage use/underclocking for better battery life. The only thing that's stopping me from doing so was an article I read about how certain apps on rooted phones were displaying passwords as clear text. Now as much as I want to unlock the full potential for my phone, I don't want people being able to access my personal data. My question is can someone access my data on my rooted phone if I have Bluetooth/WiFi/GPS disabled? I don't use Bluetooth devices with my phone, I'm perfectly happy with 3G coverage for my phone's internet uses, and I don't really use the GPS feature.
When you "root" your phone all you're doing is gaining Admin privileges. That being said, even in "un-rooted" environments you can have Apps doing crazy stuff. My best recommendation is know what you're downloading, check reviews.
I am aware that rooting gives super user access and access the root directory, but does that mean that other people can access the root directory on my phone over 3G/Wifi/Bluetooth?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
No, you specifically give each app root access when it requests it.
You can then choose to always allow, allow once, or deny.

Same problem. Try changing the USB mode to charge only, if you're still having trouble. I just rooted today and I'm trying to learn the terminology for all things root, bootstraps, rooms and the like.
Good luck, and enjoy rooting!
thanks i actually was able to get mine through by closing all programs running and it took about 10 mins to pass. Also does anyone know if it is okay to turn off usb debugging while rooted?

Hello all, I am new here so I'm sorry if I am ignorent of anything
I have an Iconia tab, and have been patiently for the netflix app to be released. Well it finally seems like it has been done here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150
My problem is when I download the apk and try to open it I get the error ''cannot open file''.
Any suggestions? Thanks
Download the apk with Firefox mobile or your desktop PC instead of the default browser. AFAIK, streaming still doesn't work for us, just queue management.
Its not working on the acer yet.
Edit: ninja'd
I think I read somewhere it's a Honeycomb issue, not just an Acer issue.
the device check disabled apk asks you to upgrade to the latest version on the market (which doesn't exist on our device), and the non-check disabled version will let you browse, but if you try to play a video it pops an error saying the device is not supported.
Hopefully we'll get something that works in the near future. Netflix claims to be working on other devices and it looked like tablets were on the list as well.
Thanks everyone for your answers. Any chance we can keep this thread going as an update to everyone wondering when netflix will be brought over so users do not have to scour the web in search of the answer?
Just a bit of a noob question, but what about changing your build.prop?
If I understand correctly, that requires root, and I do not want do downgrade to gingerbread.
Yup..

Such a shame Netflix has not gotten it together for us yet - this screen rocks as a movie player!

I have my acer rooted, but not well enough it seems. I still run honeycomb, and in fact still get firmware updates from acer. I rooted it so I can setup my two 1tb external hard drives to it lol. just used gingerbreak and a couple other things post root. However, i did try and edit the build.prop but wont allow me to save, just read only. I havent messed with it extensively, but seems like there should be a way.

If you use root explorer it will let you mount the file system read-write so you can edit the file.
Alright guys I am not sure if it has been tested but when I get home. I have the lib files that fixed the playback issue on sense 3.0 I will install the deactive device check version and push the lib Files It may actually work!! I just tested on another device that had playback issues worked flawlessly!! Ill let you guys know in like 2 hours or so when I get home.
Right on!

i am very excited to find out on this
Alright guys so after dismantling netflix.apk the latest version the issue is within one of the files called nrdp.js Think of it as the gate keeper to our netflix enjoyment. It checks certain areas of the device here is the list we need to bypass to get the rsa key injected into our devices for access to the netflix servers.
1.Get Model
2.Get Software Version
3.Get Certification Version
4.Get ESN
5.Get ESN Prefix
Those are all the functions it calls for device checking. That I could find. There is also a certificate file ca.pem that controls how long the app works for before you have to get new certificate that is encrypted up the ass so big roadblock..... Sorry I tried and will continue to try but it does not look good... Damn those large companies with their big sticks.

Hello, since sometime ago (don't remember when, sorry) my Dialer and SMS apps stopped working.
I never did any 'crazy stuff' with my Milestone 2 - just froze some motoblur stuff with Titanium (and only the really unnecessary stuff like ESMusica, things that you know they're useless) it's rooted too, but that's it. I unfroze everything and still no go, when I try to open them I get a black screen for two seconds and then it goes back back to the home screen.
I don't remember when it happened because I've been using GO Dialer and GO SMS for a long time, so it doesn't really bother me since they work on any launcher, but... I may buy a Galaxy S2 or an Atrix and it will be kind of weird selling the phone without the native Dialer and SMS borked
Anybody went through something similar? And any solution?
Thanks a lot in advance.
maybe just do a factory reset before you sell it? had the same problem with titanium, but i couldn't even recieve any sms...
first try unfreezing all blur-sh** and then reboot it, maybe that helps!
Before you sell it, do a factory reset and flash Retail Brazil SBF.

Thanks! Good idea doing it before selling (not in a hurry because I just found out my carrier won't discount me until feb 2012 - so maybe I'll be able to get a quad core phone by then, I love my iMac and iPad but I hate the iPhone's keyboard and lack of multitasking - what made me try to freeze all the motoblur stuff was that my phone is constantly hitting 100% cpu and slowing down even with the motothings frozen and oc'ed to 1.25).
But on the unfroze+reboot thing, no luck The messaging app runs, I can click on the facebook messages, etc but when I click text messaging it goes back to the Home Screen. I deleted the app cache/data via app settings on the phone and no go.
If I do a factory reset, what will I lose? My phone apps and contacts? I can reinstall then, and my Go Launcher setup is backed up on the SD and my contacts are synced with google and the mac's address book so maybe I can benefit from it?
Thanks for your response!

Dan can you tell me or point me to how I do this sbf thing? I never flashed anything on my phone, never tried custom ROMs because of the locked bootloader. Thank you.
Search for sbf_flash (mac/linux) or RSD Lite 5.3/4.8/4.9 (windows). Those are the programs that can flash a motorola signed SBF to your phone.
For the files download:
http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone2
For an explanation of the CGs(partitions) stored inside each SBF (see Droid X section):
http://and-developers.com/partitions:cdt
For a GB SBF get the leak in the Dev forum and the root method in the General or in the Droid 3 forum.
To flash it you need to be on bootloader mode, Power + Volume Down + Camera.
For a better explanation on how to flash it search the forum, you may find it.
Sorry, no links of the forum, I'm on mobile.
Edit: If you want a custom Rom, I only tested the MIUI and it is good, the others (not including Mostly Blurless GB) may have some crazy bugs.

Thanks a lot for the great explanation! I'll actually try it because since my phone performs very well one week and drives me crazy the next one depending on the apps I'm using, it seems like a good idea to start from scratch, I'll just look for something to manually backup my contacts before (I know google backs them up, just wanna be 100% sure I don't lose anybody lol).
Again, thanks a ton for such a detailed explanation.

Yeah I never worried but... One friend I added a long time ago (including fb profile, etc) was not imported - at least not her phone number - so I'm worried now that the contacts I added manually (in her case I just added the phone number, the rest was all fb+google info) won't be 100% synced. I'll check some of the people I added manually if I can remember who they are lol.

Baseband Help (TIM BRAZIL)
Hello,
My Milestone 2 is no network, when I turn it appears unsigned. Saw in other forums that the problem may be the Baseband, I'm using the ROM and it came MIUI Defy Baseband Switch, tried all the bands available for Brazil, but none works. Could you help me?
I regularly have the same problem with my dialer app.
It is not that it stops working but after a few days of collecting calls it crashes when I dial certain numbers, for example 420 which is one of the most common number starts for me, the app crashes immediately.
If I clear the stats for the recent calls -in and out- the app doesn't crash but it will crash if I try to see the number matches for that 420 that I dialed.
I hope I'm making myself clear.
I think it is a bug in the app because I don't use titanium to disable anything related to the dialer or contacts or search or anything that has influence over the dialer app.
If anyone has an idea as to why this happens please let me know.
Martin.-

First, I've only had this phone for about a week and I love it So far everything just works. I'm coming from The Incredible, Rezound, Gs3, GS4. I'm not saying I don't miss root because I do. I miss Tasker, Xsposed, Wifi Hotspot Xposed Module, root explorer and safestrap (for the times I want to play with a rom).
Life without root
Tasker Sub - Smart Connect - I found a sweet little app called "Smart Connect" in the Google Play Store . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonyericsson.extras.liveware&hl=en - Previously I would use takser to for certain conditions - example I would have tasker launch waze when I'm attached to my car Bluetooth. Smart connect does this along with many more option just like tasker.
Wifi Hotspot - I have unlimited data so the hotspot doesn't work for me - I searched and searched and can't find anything but PDA connect that works with USB tether - This is probably the main reason I miss root, especially on vacation with the family. IF ANYONE FINDS A BETTER WORK AROUND PLEASE POST! THANKS
Root explorer - It still works but without root you can't write to existing files. I always like the cloud storage tabs feature, you can add dropbox and other services as a tab and it all still works. Copy and paste still work. I use this a lot for Moto 360 watch faces. I download them to dropbox and then use Root explorer to move them to a folder that Watchface and Facer can use. Works Great!
Please list other work arounds here, I like to see what everyone else is doing.

I know replacing it removes the rcs and volte icons that show up after rooting. That's all I know tho lol. It has to do with data service I believe.

If I remember correctly that should have to do with video calling but not positive.

Do we know anymore info on this? After rooting the s7 (at&t) everything was fine, accept sending texts through messeges failed. Then this notification came up, I could not remove it from notifications. I did a restart and got stuck in boot loop and had to factory reset. Now, I haven't finished root yet, but still on same rom and this has popped up again.

i got the stupid devil faced notification too. its also from com.sec.vsimservice . I never had this before but it seems ever since i started using Digits from t-mobile.
I cannot remove it for the life of me and it doesnt matter what rom i am on. I tried clearing cache and data and also blocking notifications but i can still see it when i pull down the notifications. I get it right after i send a chat message using default samsung chat app. BTW im on the note 5 t-mobile.
EDIT: i found out that vsimservice stands for virtual sim service. Well it must be freaken t-mobile Digits beta program... =/ so annoying.
I started getting the devil notification after root on stock every time I get a voicemail. I can clear it like any other notification, it's just annoying.

Mike the file nerd
I'm far from an expert at this but I could tell you how to avoid the problem in the future. I assume that if you have access to directories that contain system preconfig apps you must be running root privilege. Follow down the path to you're particular carrier. In my case I'm technically running on unlocked carrier but for the most part my phone still believes it is AIO(Cricket) ie boot still runs cricket sales code still runs as AIO. ECT. so in my example the file path would be /system/omc/AIO/etc. Inside your carriers file you will find several manifest (.xml) and text (.txt) files somthing along the lines of default_application_order.xml and/or enforcedskippingpackages.txt In my case on my s8 I have both. I haven't personally tried this yet so don't blame me if you try it and turn you phone into an 800$ paperweight (disclaimer) not to mention tampering xml is slightly outside of ethical phone use! That being said I'm of the opinion at least in my own case; if I pay for a device and don't have a contract against it i.e. I outright own the device I may set it up as i please. (Disclaimer) So ethics behind us. If I were to be experiencing this problem I would start by adding the problem pkg (...vsim...apk) whatever yours is called to the enforcedskipping.txt first (as it's slightly less unethical to change a text than a manifest) second find the system app either by an app like sysapp remover or like a real man inside the file system under probably something along the lines of "priv-app" dir or by superuser enabled terminals either abd via your computer/mac/linux whatever you run or by one of the many available terminals in the store of your choice and uninstall your problem apps (i highly suggest making a complete nandroid backup or tar or whatever recovery you use first and also saving a copy of the apk just in case) reboot your phone to recovery clear your cache partition remount the system and reboot. If this hasn't cleared up your problem back to recovery for a factory wipe with said modified files in place and backup ready. Reinstall everything then restore your backup via cmw/twrp/safestrap/bootstrap/odin/lgbridge/etc.etcetc whatever your preferred recovery method is your problem should be fixed. If still not mod the xml instead of the txt and restart from step one. Once again I do not know what dependency/gradles/etc may or may not depend on this what functions you may kill sim cards locked/ruined etc and I'm no professional so if you brick☠??? your ??that's on you for listening to an amateur enthusiast. Now I'm sure one of our wonderful experts here will come along and correct everything I've just said but I'm ok with this I listen to these guys every day I wouldn't know a fraction of the things I do without this wonderful forum and these amazing devs. So I appreciate their criticism as tutoring.

With all that said and out of the way I would like to hear from anyone who has tried this personally or other method for removing this as I myself was led to this particular thread because I was investigating the possibility of what I could change within this particular system app myself. I brick my phone phone twice a day usually so before I crash my very well set up system I usually investigate first the reciprocation/ramifications of adjusting system orientated files/apps.
