Why didn't my nexus 7 charge last night? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Plugged it in overnight, daydream was even running, just unplugged I now, battery 32%. Hopefully it's a one time thing, but serious doesn't make sense

Maybe the cable wasn't inserted fully

I had a similar issue too, it turned out that the stock charging cable was defective. My computer still recognized my tablet though. I've been using my GNex's cable since then without any problem. It is one of the most common issues with these devices. So, try another cable, and if the problem still persists, it can be a SW defect too.

The micro USB port is extremely fragile. I had to exchange one due to it breaking easily.

Well its warranty expires in august, if it's going to break, hope it does soon. However it charged fine last night so hopefully it won't happen again
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

It could be a one time thing where the plug wasn't fully connected since it seems to be charging fine now. Before your warranty expires, you can send it in to be checked out if you want. It doesn't hurt to give it a shot if you don't mind spending some time without it.

dropped my nexus now it only charges while off

well as I'm sure you all did.... the first thing I did when you got your N7 was to unlock and root it so you could load up all the games that you worked hard at on your phone... everything was great until it slipped off of my car seat when I got home and now it will not recognise the USB port while its powered on... my computer will not recognize the device at all to transfer data either... luckily I have already unlocked/ rooted and loaded team win recovery...
so here is my question... where can I look to see if something got broken when I dropped it... I took off the back cover and and everything looks ok...
my other question is will google replace it if I send it back saying that the cable does not charge while powered on... I can not relock/ return to stock without usb/adb connection
the length of turn around time that I hear about with the 16gb models I might wait it out to see if I can deal with it... I have a wifi web sharing app that I can use even though its very slow compared to a direct cable
If you can get back to the stock rom ...I'd sent it back if it's all possible. The Rma is quick and painless if your tablet was bought on Google Play.
- The turn around time for me on a 8gb and 16 gb tablets from Google play was just a few days. (Under a week from the time I called until the time I got my tablets in my hands. )
Well I let it charge off for the night and it is charged 100%... I guess I'll just rely on wifi connectivity for a while and see if I can manage before I try and return it
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
That really sucks man typically they won't replace a device that has been unlocked. Have you tried a factory reset yet? I I know it sounds unlikely but I have had accelerometers go to "sleep" from being dropped and or a faulty rom and a factory reset brought it back. Its really weird since you do get a charge when its off.. if it was broken hardware I would think you wouldn't get a charge at all. Make sure you do a nandroid backup before so you can get your apps back if it doesn't fix your problem.
Also about the RMA for the 16gb I believe now they are actually out of that model at the time. They may have a stash just for returns but if you decide to try a return I would make sure to find out what the estimated wait time would be.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Yea that's the weird part... But I did flash it back to stock ROM but nothing worked... If I could get USB to work I could flash it back to stock and lock it... Its a loose wire somewhere inside I'm thinking

My N7 16gb charged properly on the first charge. Now on the second charge, it will only charge while powered off. My device is stock and has not been dropped.
I plugged it in last night, while powered on, and woke up to find the battery in about the same state that it was in 8 hours earlier. That was with it plugged into a 2.5 amp HP Touchpad charger. I tried plugging it into a 1 amp charger and got no indication that it e was charging, until i turned it off. Then it put up the charging indicator. I will try using the N7 charger and see if that makes any difference.
It is possible, but very unlikely, that the device is doing a handshake with the charger when the device is powered on, and if it fails then refuses to charge. If that were happening i would expect to see a warning pop up on the device.
UPDATE: My device will charge properly off the asus charger that came with it. It totally sucks that the N7 appears to do a handshake with the charger. My advice to the OP is to make sure you only use the original charger.
Does ADB wireless work? Might not help you with fastboot, but you could push/pull files...
Yes all wireless connections work fine... But I guess I'm just going to have to live with this issue since it was my fault but at least I am already rooted with custom recovery so I might get lucky and have a kernel that might be able to fix it...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Based on the post about the charger "handshake," maybe it's the charger that's gone bad, and not the device?

I dropped it cracked screen and can't unlock the screen, UK Repairs
Hi, hope someone can help :-0
I dropped my Nexus (oh dear!) and the screen's cracked. It powers OK, just I can't unlock as the touchscreen is not responding.
Asus UK can repair it, but can't quote me a price (because they've had so few repairs in yet)
Questions:
1. Anyone dealt with Asus UK repairs? Or any ideas of the costs of replacing a broken screen?
2. Can I reset the device by just using the on/off and volume keys as the touchscreen is dead
Thanks
As long as you have adb connection you can reset it to stock... I've got no USB connection so I cant... wugfresh toolkit has all the proper files to flash the stock image...
I've been doing OK with no USB... I charge it at night and I last me all day easily

Nexus 7 doesn't charge when on, but charges when turned off?

It's really weird. When my nexus 7 is on, it won't charge or connect to the pc by usb, as if the usb port doesn't work. When I turn it of it charges normally, not problems whatsoever. I tried with factory cable and charger still same issue.
I don't have the receipt to return it so I have to find a fix, any ideas?
Raplacing the usb port might do the thing or is it something else? Is someone having this issue?
Thanks

You don't have enough power on your USB port. Mine charges via usb just fine while in use. My car charger does what yours is doing.
I'll assume it charges fine when using the ac charger that came with your n7?
Why you can't connect to your PC...I don't know. Like you said...maybe a bad USB port. I'm using an Asus USB 3.0/SATA lll PCI card.

Read the documentation. It does not support charging over USB while in use. There's not enough power through a computer USB port.

I have the exact same problem. Mine won't charge when on and will not connect to PC via USB. Did you ever find a solution?
I had the same problem, it turned out to be an iffy USB cable. Grabbed one of the kids micro USB cables (for their phone). Fixed the issue for me.

Doesnt matter what kind of cable I use or charger. Cant get it to do anything but Stickmount still works somehow.
Sorry to dig this out. Have the same problem as OP for a few month. Now I'am annoyed enough to find a solution.
Anybody with good advice?
Cable/charger won't matter: if GN7 is on (either active or standby) it won't charge (or get recognized by PC). If switched off, it charges anywhere (wall mount charger, PC USB, ...)
I'm also having this same problem and have been unable to find a solution after about an hour or so.
I didn't find a solution. Sold on cl for dirt cheap. Bought an n7 2013

I bought my n7 on 11-30-12. In the last month or so its developed the same problem. I called Asus for warranty. The guy says you can send it to Texas for it to be studied and repaired but it will take a LLLOOOONNNGGGG time. He said I should wait til the factory warranty ran out and hope Wallyworlds extended warranty offers to replace it with a new one. I tried taking the back off and unplugging-replugging it, didn't help. I tried a factory reset, didn't help. Guess I'll keep trolling the interweb for ideas til the end of the month and hope Wallyworld gives me a new one! Either way its the last asus for me. I may have to sharpen my teeth for all the crow I'll have to eat when I show up for a visit at my brothers' homes with an ipad air...

I had this problem with my Nexus 7 (2013). In my case, the usb charging port on the tablet was severely damaged. This caused the USB port wires to short with each other. USB charging was obviously not possible. However, the unit would charge with the wireless charger--but only when off.
Since I had a wireless charger, and the USB port was destroyed already, I took a hemostat clamp and physically snapped and removed the USB charging port and wires. Once the USB wires were no longer shorting, the wireless charging worked flawlessly.
If you don't care about USB charging or connectivity, this workaround may work for you. Otherwise, you may consider a daughterboard replacement or replacing the USB port.
Hope this helps...
You need a good wall charger, a USB port on your computer isn't going to cut it. Buy one of the high power ones from Amazon. I find mine will hold at whatever level it is at now with my Kindle's wall charger if I'm using it but will charge pretty quickly when the screen is off.
I know this is an old thread but I acquired a nexus 7 2012 from my sister. She said it doesn't charge. I did a factory reset and found that it charges when it's off and holds charge so the battery is out the equation. I purchased a new usb port and fitted and although the USB fits a lot better it still only charges when it's off. I've used plenty of wall chargers Sony, Samsung but won't charge when it's on at all. Anyone get to the bottom of this?
Thank you

This is an old thread, but I have the same problem. My N7 charges only when turned off no matter which cable or charger I use.

Loosing battery while charging

recently I noticed that my n7 is loosing battery even when charging, I was running cm10 with the kernel that came with it, and I tried switching to rootbox, but that didn't help... I'm using OEM charger with OEM USB cable, I just called Asus and they created an RMA for me, but I just wanted to find out before I send it in, if there's anything I can do to solve my problem on my own.....
Thanks,
Aryeh

The first thing to check I think is if the cable and/or charger is defective by using another cable. If not, you can restore the original 4.2.2 Android and ROM with Nexus Root Toolkit. If nothing changes, inspect the micro USB port for damage as they are extremely fragile. Asus’ warranty claims that your warranty is void if non-authorized personnel tamper with the device. So you should be careful if you decide to open the back to inspect if the battery is properly connected to the motherboard as I have heard stories of them not being connected properly. The last thing is to inspect if the battery itself is defective.
I hate restoring back to stock... Backing up my internal SD took almost a whole day... But but I guess I'll have to do that anyway if I send it back to asus
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I would +1 with the cable idea. My USB cables get man handled like crazy so I am never surprised if they misbehave.
Also, I don't think it'd be too far-fetched to try a different type of 'power brick' if you have another (preferably Samsung) charger around. But I know these are less likely to cause issues for most users. However, if you're that adamant about sending your tablet back I would try this last.
In addition, does the tablet charge normally when powered off when plugged in?
When the screen was off i got from 13% to 100% in 4 hrs
I ordered another OEM charger from amazon and if it doesn't solve the problem I'll return it

[Q] Is my battery failing?

The past two days, I awoke to find my N10, on the pogo charger overnight, at significantly less than 100% charge. First time, I had left it on while it charged and it was in the 70% range. Today, having been off all night and on the charger for 7 hours, the charge only went from 50% to 86%.
The really disturbing thing is the discharge rate. I've only had it on for 25 minutes or so this morning and it's down to 78%. The battery system settings area shows 57% screen followed by Dolphin at 7%. That plus the fact that it won't charge fully overnight, even when powered off, seems to eliminate a misbehaving app as the cause.
Since this behavior matches what I saw when my iPhone 3GS battery was about to fail, I'm guessing that's what I'm seeing here. And, of course, I'm 10 days past the 1 year warranty (purchased at launch), so I'm probably on the hook to fix this myself.
I'll try turning it off and charging it via USB during the day today, just to eliminate the pogo charger as the cause.
Just thought I'd see if anyone else had seen this behavior and if it's definitely the battery/charging HW or if there might be some sort of Android SW glitch involved.

You need to provide more info in order to properly troubleshoot. What version of Android are you running? Stock or custom ROM? Custom Kernel? Have you made any significant changes to your Nexus 10 since you've noticed the problem, ie. Did the problem begin since a recent update?
Sorry, forgot to add those details.
I'm on 4.3 stock. Boot loader has been unlocked, but the tablet isn't currently rooted. It was about a year ago, but an OTA unrooted it and I never got around to re-rooting.
No significant changes preceded this issue.
It looks like the 4.4 OTA just downloaded, but I'll hold off on installing it until I get this figured out.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4
It may be worth your while to try the update to 4.4. Some users have reported faster charging times and if it is a hardware issue there wouldn't be much you can do anyway.
I actually had a strange charging issue a couple of months ago which I thought was hardware related but after a full wipe and a clean ROM flash the problem resolved itself.
Last night, I tried using my Galaxy Nexus AC adapter & USB cable in place of the N10 adapter and Magnector and...it worked. The battery showed 100% charge when I booted the tablet this morning. The battery still seems to discharge more rapidly than I'd like, but at least it got to 100%.
I'll try the Magnector on the GNex adapter tonight and, if necessary, a USB cable on the N10 adapter tomorrow night to try to isolate the cause.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4
Bummer. Looks like the problem is either the Magnector or the Pogo pins and/or associated circuitry inside the N10. Magnector using my GNex AC adapter fails to charge while a USB cable in the N10 adapter works just fine.
I'm going to try cleaning the N10 pogo pins and Magnector contacts with rubbing alcohol and see if that helps. If not, I guess I'll have to buy a new Magnector. Hopefully, one of those two options pans out. I really prefer using the magnetized connectors on the N10.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4
Cleaning the pins on the connector using rubbing alcohol and a q-tip & lint cloth appears to have had some positive effect. The tablet charged overnight, while powered off, from 35% to 76%.
I have a feeling that a more thorough cleaning might restore the unit to full capacity. Anyone know of something better than alcohol to clean oxidized connectors?

Phone burned through cable

Has anyone had this before?
My phone burned through the cable I received with it.
http://imgur.com/ZLXNU8E
I tried charging it today, but the charging light didn't turn on. Didn't think much of it, but when I removed it from the charger after 10 minutes, I smelled burned plastic. And part of the cable got stuck in the phone. Had to pry it out with pliers.
Phone doesn't charge anymore, but it still works.
Really glad I noticed it in time, otherwise I could have had a fire on my hands... Was really hot
Sucks pretty hard to be without a phone for the time now.

Yes. I have heard of this.
And it scares the h*ll out of me!
I'm not a fan of fast charging due to this issue. I've seen it happen on other devices as well. Batteries are not meant to charge at such rates. I'd rather have a slower charge personally
This is why whenever I charge my phone, I keep the AC/Cooler/fan on of that room, keeps the phone temp low and helps in faster charging.
Whut? This is actually very concerning....is this a usb type c problem you think? Or does this happen with other phones too?
You should report this to LG
This needs more media attention. I don't think anyone has zeroed in on what's causing it yet. This could happen to all of us for all I know.
Need a response from Google.
Definitely not charging my phone over night anymore, Google and LG need to look into this.

I had this happen with my old HTC Desire way back when. Woke up in the middle of the night to a burning smell. Could hardly touch the phone it was so hot. Battery was swelled up to the point it was deforming the back cover of the phone.

i just purchased the 5x on saturday and paid for 1 day shipping so hoping to get it tomorrow. but this is making me worried... i might get a usb type c charger thats rated at much lower current to help prevent this instead of using the included 3A charger. or get a standard usb to type c cable and use a regular 1-1.5A charger.

Speaking generally, this almost always has happened, for years, to people who pull the cord by the wire, not by the plug. My wife is terrible about this and she goes through 3-4 cords to my one.
Anyway, that may not fully explajn this problem, bug it'll sure makd it more likely.
Well. I just googled and I found this article. My nexus 5x just burned yesterday and the worst was that everything was wood, even the floors. It almost started a fire at my home yesterday and I am mad because of that.
There is a picture I attached and I'm returning it tomorrow because I had it for almost 3 weeks now.
