The past two days, I awoke to find my N10, on the pogo charger overnight, at significantly less than 100% charge. First time, I had left it on while it charged and it was in the 70% range. Today, having been off all night and on the charger for 7 hours, the charge only went from 50% to 86%.
The really disturbing thing is the discharge rate. I've only had it on for 25 minutes or so this morning and it's down to 78%. The battery system settings area shows 57% screen followed by Dolphin at 7%. That plus the fact that it won't charge fully overnight, even when powered off, seems to eliminate a misbehaving app as the cause.
Since this behavior matches what I saw when my iPhone 3GS battery was about to fail, I'm guessing that's what I'm seeing here. And, of course, I'm 10 days past the 1 year warranty (purchased at launch), so I'm probably on the hook to fix this myself.
I'll try turning it off and charging it via USB during the day today, just to eliminate the pogo charger as the cause.
Just thought I'd see if anyone else had seen this behavior and if it's definitely the battery/charging HW or if there might be some sort of Android SW glitch involved.

You need to provide more info in order to properly troubleshoot. What version of Android are you running? Stock or custom ROM? Custom Kernel? Have you made any significant changes to your Nexus 10 since you've noticed the problem, ie. Did the problem begin since a recent update?

I'm on 4.3 stock. Boot loader has been unlocked, but the tablet isn't currently rooted. It was about a year ago, but an OTA unrooted it and I never got around to re-rooting.
No significant changes preceded this issue.
It looks like the 4.4 OTA just downloaded, but I'll hold off on installing it until I get this figured out.

It may be worth your while to try the update to 4.4. Some users have reported faster charging times and if it is a hardware issue there wouldn't be much you can do anyway.
I actually had a strange charging issue a couple of months ago which I thought was hardware related but after a full wipe and a clean ROM flash the problem resolved itself.
Last night, I tried using my Galaxy Nexus AC adapter & USB cable in place of the N10 adapter and Magnector and...it worked. The battery showed 100% charge when I booted the tablet this morning. The battery still seems to discharge more rapidly than I'd like, but at least it got to 100%.
I'll try the Magnector on the GNex adapter tonight and, if necessary, a USB cable on the N10 adapter tomorrow night to try to isolate the cause.

Bummer. Looks like the problem is either the Magnector or the Pogo pins and/or associated circuitry inside the N10. Magnector using my GNex AC adapter fails to charge while a USB cable in the N10 adapter works just fine.
I'm going to try cleaning the N10 pogo pins and Magnector contacts with rubbing alcohol and see if that helps. If not, I guess I'll have to buy a new Magnector. Hopefully, one of those two options pans out. I really prefer using the magnetized connectors on the N10.

Cleaning the pins on the connector using rubbing alcohol and a q-tip & lint cloth appears to have had some positive effect. The tablet charged overnight, while powered off, from 35% to 76%.
I have a feeling that a more thorough cleaning might restore the unit to full capacity. Anyone know of something better than alcohol to clean oxidized connectors?

Recently I purchased my first tablet, ofcourse the Nexus 7 32 GB and I am very happy with it.
As soon as I started it, I received the notice that an update was ready to be installed, which I did (4.2).
After that I got another notice to install 4.2.1.
So far so good, everything worked very well....also the normal charging with stock charger and cable.
Then after about 1.5 weeks I noticed that my battery level didn't went down from 100% to xx%, even after playing games for several hours.
I am absolutely sure this wasn't the case before, I did charge well and battery-level went down normally.
So because I couldn't tell if the battery was empty or not (because it kept being on 100%), the Nexus went down ofcourse.
Well, I plugged in the stock charger and cable and started to charge it.
Battery icon (when Nexus is off) nicely went from first quarter (25%) to full (100%) when I unplugged it.
It booted up nicely, but then I noticed that the battery-level showed 0% and kept stating 0%. Even again after playing games for several hours (GTA4 and RR2).
Normally it should decrease in battery-level ofcourse.
So now I'm stuck at battery-level 0%, but strange thing is that the Nexus works fine besides this small problem.
I can charge it, play with it for several hours, reboot, deplete the battery, etc....
Only thing is I can't see the actual battery-level which is very annoying, since I never know when the battery is empty and needs to be recharged.
I searched internet using Google and also here on XDA, but never found a solution.
What I already did was :
1. Reflash stock ROM, using the Nexus Root Toolkit.
2. Flash CM 10.1 with CWM Touch
3. Tried to hold down POWER + VOL UP + VOL DOWN for 30 seconds
4. Tried POWER + VOL UP
Nothing I did worked.
Did someone had this problem before and was able to solve it ?

Hi,
I had this issue too when i purchased my nexus 7.
For solve the probleme I've remove the back of the tablette then unplug and replug the battery.
Don't had any other issue. its realy a nice tablette you have make a good choice.
Sounds like a problem with the fuel gauge chip... Not sure if you can fix it.

That file only stores the data used to fill the battery graph... It has nothing to do with the actual calculation of battery percentage.

Check out this thread, there's people talking of a fix for PA for battery percentage stuck at 100%.. Maybe the same cause as your problem... Look from post #10047 onwards.. Makes me think its probably not a hardware issue at least.

In PA, is definitely a software issue and seems to be caused by paprefs. The issue that is commonly reported with the N7 across all roms is typically caused by the battery connector not being properly seated. Asus QC consistently has fallen short on this connector.

I have fixed multiple loose battery connectors using clear scotch tape. The problem is that they didnt use any adhesive on the battery for a batch of n7`s. Makes it possible for the battery to slide back and forth at least 5mm. When it does it pulls the internal battery lead right off the mother board connector. Tape the connector tight. Then tape the battery to that side. Do NOT tape over the copper tape. I even made a small strip of foam to place along the far side of the battery to remove the room to slide.
Easy fix for an annoying problem.

I can surely try to open the back and check if the battery cable is seated correctly, but I'm wondering....
If it isn't seated correctly, wouldn't that mean that the battery isn't charged at all ?
In my case the battery is being charged and depleted normally, since I can use the N7 to play games etc.
Only the battery-level indicator keeps telling me the level is at 0% and it says "unknown".
It's just annoying as I don't know when it's fully charged or fully drained.
Now I let it charge for a complete night and work with the tablet untill it dies on me.
Just to let everyone know, who might face the same problem :
I pulled off the back cover and found out that indeed the connector, coming from the battery going to the mainboard, was not fixed in its socket.
It was not completely out of the socket, just not firmly pressed.
So I pressed it firmly and put back the cover.
After restart, the readings are back to normal.
Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

I have exactly the same problem!! Can you please help me. I tried what you said - removed back cover, pressed the connector hard, and switched on again. The problem is still there. Can you look at this picture - http://android.hdblog.it/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Nexus-7-Teardown.jpg and tell me if the connector are the red and yellow wires on the left, on the side of the tablet closest to the camera? If so, how did you press it? Could you explain those steps once again please?? Much appreciated!

Make sure you put a piece of tape on the connector to secure both pieces together and also one on the battery to prevent it from shifting. The newer n7's had a battery that didn't fill the space for it...allowing it to shift and pull the connector free.

I had exactly the same issue. Word 4 word.
I took the back off my n7 (take the SIM holder off 1st, makes getting the back off much easier) and noticed the battery connection was loose. Unplugged fully, replugged and got my battery % back! :thumbup:

First off, for everyone that has battery-related problems, please check my thread:

It provides "fixes" to a number of battery-related issues.
Second, the cover is really easy to get off. Just use your fingernails. Start half-way down one of the long sides (I forget which, but try both - your fingernails will easily slide into the seam). Gently snap off the cover from your starting point. Slowly work your way around. If you go slowly/carefully, it'll come off rather easily and without breaking off any tabs. It snaps back on easily as well.
In my post, I recommend that you apply a small piece of electrical tape on the battery connector, as they have shown over time to come loose for a number of N7 owners.
In all but the occasional rare case, N7's with battery-related issues are easily "fixed" and do not need to be returned for replacement. Just read my thread. It'll save you a lot of time and frustration. It'll also might save you from a needless return!

Strange. my tablet is doing the weird battery bug. Battery stuck @ 100% for quite some time, even after a whole day of idle and @ home usage after work.
Realized it wasn't dropping.
This morning, I opened up the back and checked out the battery. It was glued down so not shifting around, but I noticed there were fingerprints on the copper material. Odd thing is I bought this tablet new. Box was sealed and everything.
So far I unplugged the battery and plugged back in. Haven't turned the device back on just yet. Might wait a couple hours and see.

Yup I stumbled upon your thread after a bit of searching. The tablet was actually rather new, just purchased a week ago. Was charging and draining fine for few days of ownership, and all of a sudden it started acting up. I realized it was too good to be true seeing 100% battery % after a whole day + gaming on it @ home.

I've tried searching, but no luck, so here's my issue.
My nexus 7 was around 25% battery last night so I plugged it in for the night.
Woke up this morning and the backlight was on, but the screen was off.
When I unplugged my n7 the backlight turned off. Hitting the power button had no effect.
I then tried pushing and holding the power button for roughly a minute, nothing.
I have disconnected the battery and still no response from the unit.
I plugged it back in for roughly a minute as well, still nothing.
Unfortunately I don't have access to a charger right now.
Is it possible the battery is dead even though it was on the charger all night?

Weird.
Just plugged it in to my car charger and it booted up. Battery is completely dead, so I guess with the backlight staying on all night it didn't charge.
Now why would the backlight stay on if the screen is off...

Don't go flashing different roms and kernels now like most of the idiots here, it could just have been your charger being faulty or a bad connection to the tablet overnight. if the problem happens again then you can investigate further.
BTW, were you charging from your PC/Laptop with a USB cable or through a wall adapter? i've had issues in the past charging my Nexus 4 and 7 not charging overnight on my PC
I feel like a broken record but since I've fixed a ton of n7s with loose battery connections, I would recommend checking the internal battery lead to make sure its not loose. Asus didn't do a good job of making sure all n7 batteries were secure and this allowed the battery to shift and pull the power lead out. Some clear scotch tape on the connector and one on the battery (avoid the copper tape areas) will eliminate this problem if that's what you have.

I ran into this problem. Initially, my Nexus 7 didn't start. When I plug in the charger the screen would flicker from time to time but there's no indication of charging. So I decided to open it up to see that the battery cable has loosened. So I managed to fix it and use it happily thinking that it won't happen again.
Since last week, the same issue happened. I thought it was the same issue and opened it up to see that the battery cable is firmly in place. So I got a shock. I removed it and re-inserted it again to see if it fixed it. But nope, it won't turn on. And now it's been a week and I don't know what to do It's nothing wrong with the loose cable cuz now it's firmly in place.
Now when I plug it in to charge, the screen will just flicker (as in the back light will turn on and off in 5 sec intervals). What do you think I should do? I tried holding the power button for 30 secs as well.
I bought this new from eBay and still under warranty. But I live in Sri Lanka. So when I bought it, I had to ship to a friend in the US and had to wait till he came down. So it's not easy for me to ship back and to receive another device. Hopefully I can find a solution to fix this myself.

Make sure that the cables between the battery and the connector are intact and not broken. One or two people reported a broken cable.
Does it boot while plugged in to the charger with the battery disconnected ? You could simply have a bad battery.

I checked again. The cables aren't broken. They are all in good shape.
It doesn't boot when I plug in. Actually it doesn't show anything on the screen. If I look closely I can see static flicker on the screen from time to time. Just like the static in TV but much much less. Like only a few of those in certain places.
When this happened the first time I opened it up to see the loose cable. So fixing that helped it then. But now I dunno what's causing it.

Might have to try a different charger, maybe something stronger. I JUST had that problem with my GF Nexus 7. It wouldn't boot with her normal charger and the screen would flicker like a TV. I used my Nexus 4 charger and it worked.
She had left the battery fully drain for over two weeks and I think the battery didn't appreciate it.

Yesterday I used my N7 while running errands & it was parked in the long neck windshield mount I have for it. This is the first time I've done this. I work third shift and it's usually night or early morning (and cool) when I'm driving with the tablet. Yesterday it was hot and the sun was shining. I didn't leave it in the car but it got hot riding around. I kept it plugged into my car charger the entire time (2 amp charger that fast charges). It stayed charged up most of the day but at some point it stopped charging. I noticed when I got home and the charging animation had stopped.
I took it in & plugged it into the wall A/C charger but it still did not report as charging. I just thought the battery was hot from being in the sun all day & had tripped some thermal sensor that prevented charge. I kept it on & plugged in thinking it would start back up when the battery cooled off. Nope.
The tablet is @ 6% now. I is off completely now and I don't have enough charge left to do a nandroid. I've tried all kinds of combinations of chargers and cables but it refuses to charge.
Did the heat kill the battery or some of the circuitry?
Is there any way to back this N7 up?
I'm planning on getting a new one when the new models come out anyway but I'd at least like to get a backup off of this one...
Edit: I updated my sig before submitting this post but it's not showing up yet.
I'm running Trinity Kernel & RasbeanJelly. Both are up to date.
Update: For anyone interested, I found & fixed the problem. I took the back off & was looking around for anything obvious. I knew the problem had to be either the battery or the usb port (or the electronics for either one). The battery is pretty much self contained so not much I could do there. The usb port is screwed down under the speakers and there is a flat ribbon cable that runs from it up to the logic board. The connector on the board is covered by a piece of black electrical tape type material. That is where the problem was.
There is no locking mechanism for keeping the ribbon cable seated in the connector. It is only held in place by the tape. When my Nexus got hot, the adhesive on the tape failed and the ribbon cable must have moved just enough to disconnect it. Thus preventing power getting from the port to the logic board and battery.
I reconnected the cable & reapplied the tape.
Problem solved!
On a side note, this week without my Nexus made me realize just how much I love this tablet. I have a Nook color running CM7 and an HP Touchpad running CM9 that I used as backups but the Nook was way too slow and the Touchpad was too big to be convenient. I can't wait for the new version...

I have been using my nexus 7 2012 for a year now .. it worked brilliant .. but now this horrible issues has sprung in from nowhere .. the battery wont charge up, or rarely it does,, but very slowly. i am running stock 4.4 unrooted . i have checked my ports for dust, swapped several cables and chargers (also used the original charger and cable). but with no luck. Surprisingly the problem appeared suddenly, one day it charged normally , the next day i left it on charge at 60% and returned to find it on 59%.. help me .. this is driving me crazy
Install the Battery Monitor Widget - should give you an idea of charging/power consumption. I'm assuming you've tried using the stock charger and cable?

Yes i used stock and non stock chargers and cables .. i am using battery widget reborn app to monitor the battery stats.. i also attached the screen shots but for some reason they are not showing up
I think your battery connector is messed up. U might have to open your tablet and disconnect then reconnect the cables.

Search in the forum people have fixed it many times u have top open up your tablet and dc/rc yout battery.

I have the official dock and never had any charge issues until yesterday....
While it's in the dock, it clearly shows it charging and yet the battery meter appears to be losing charge...
I have tried with the original cable and plug among other cables and yet nothing...
The only way for me to get charged is to turn the unit off and yet it still charges painfully slow...
Anyone with a solution other than opening the thing up and hoping it's the plug?

Mine's having the same problem. It seems to be a hardware problem.. It's charging very slowly or can't be fully charged.

It's very strange... If I turn it off and charge... it charges (again) very slowly.... 3 hours and I went from a 2% charge to 59%...
Doesn't matter if I use the dock or plug it in direct.....
So, to me... I would say a software problem... I just don't want to do a full reset and re-install if I don't have too...
my wife's was all the way dead today after not being used and wouldn't turn on. left it plugged in for 30 min and it powered on with only 2% battery. i t is stock unrooted and everything was all good until 4.4.2 is now charging very slowly. I switched to a non oem usb wire with the asus charger to see if it helps. it is the only stock android in my home (out of 7 devices) and I plan to keep it that way for now.

You can find it on youtube.. Just search for Nexus 7 battery fix.. I've tried on both my wife's and my Nexus 7 but it's not helping. Be careful not to break any connectors..

N7 is very easy to open and close back.
I had the EXACT same issue 2-3 times this year and disconnecting the cable and reconnecting it back fixes it EVERY TIME.
The battery cable is short and the battery is loose so movement pulls the cable out. Not all pins are touching so it results in poor contacts or no contact at all.
Its a design flaw that can also be fixed by sticking a folded paper under the battery.

I'll try that when I get home. My n7 has not been charging for so long its starting to scare me. I tried pushing the cables in but it seems like its pushed as far in as it'll go.

I have opened it up and reset the battery cables...
They originally looked pretty secure though... pretty tight....
Here's hoping that unplugging and plugging the battery back is solves the issue...

Tried unplugging and replugging but it's still the same. I think it's my charging connector though. It randomly disconnects when I plug it into the PC. Tried with 3 different cables even the stock one. But I'm not sure if it's the port or the battery. It charges up to < 60 slowly but it doesn't go beyond that and starts draining. Thinking of selling it and getting a flo instead

Just a thought, but another possibility is that the ribbon cable to the USB/headphone jack flex assembly has worked loose to the point of intermittent connections. See "step 10" of iFixit's N7 teardown
Or, if the connector itself is mechanically damaged, maybe there is some way to buy just that Asus sub-assembly. Anyone have a source?

I have the same problem, I purchased a nexus 7 charging dock from Amazon and it charges flawlessly. The dock charges using the 4 pins on the side of the tablet. BTW...The charging dock is under 24.00+ Shipping.

Could my work on my XT1575 cause the phone to charge very slowly? As long as I was using a good QC3 charger and a QC3-certified micro USB cable my MXPE phone charged fast. I have TWO working XT1575s. When plugged into the same charger with the same USB cable they both showed "Turbocharging" and both charged quickly.
Last week I replaced the back of one of the phones. -- exchanging the original back with an ebony wooden back. I had problems getting the ebony back to stay completely adhered so I installed it, removed it, installed it again with better adhesive. looks fine now.
Now, the back is securely in place BUT THE PHONE WON'T CHARGE FAST ANYMORE. Could I have damaged something in the phone while doing all that heating during the back replacement? I use a heat gun, always on the low setting, but I for the last installation I moved the heat pretty slowly around the back to increase the heat and hopefully improve the adhesion.
Everything about the phone works perfectly, both hardware and software. When I plug in a charging cable is shows "Turbocharging" but the charge time estimated by the phone is 7 or 8 or even 9 hours. That's about how long it takes too. And the phone won't charge past about 90%.
I've already replaced the battery. I have no idea how to further diagnose the problem. Have I effectively destroyed my phone while putting on a prettier back (to summarize how stupid I'd feel)?

Either you have a cheap low quality battery or you probably burnt it up with the heat gun. The NFC pad is on top of the battery if that still works then I highly doubt anything else was damaged but I could be wrong. Worse case scenario you desoldered something on the motherboard but I doubt it. First check the wattage on your wall charger if it says 5 volts and 1 Amp then that's your issue. Most wall chargers or USB ports I use have to be at least 5 volts and 2 amps or it will not charge and it'll actually get stuck at 90% like in your case because the charge rate slows down after 80% I believe and a crap wall charger won't have enough power to charge the phone like a high quality OEM wall charger would.
