Nook stable release that performs adequately - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the most stable release for nook color with good performance these days? I am finding some lag in at least two of the CM 10.1 roms that I have tried. Any comments appreciated.

I've tried all the CM9, CM10 and CD10.1 ROMs, and they all lag too much for this old gear and my tastes. CM7.2 (Gingerbread) is still my favorite. My advice... start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873

I tried the various CM 10.1 roms, but eventually went back to MiRaGe 7.2. The lag on 10.1 was annoying but tolerable, but on 10.1 I would have to recharge every night, while with 7.2 I can get a few days use out of my tablet without finding it dead if I forget to plug it in at night.

Personally, mateorod's aosp is amazing. Good battery life, Zero lag. No serious bugs.

I would have to concur with going back to 7.2 and Mirage in particular. 10.x all seemed sluggish, which is a shame because they've done some beautiful work on the roms and getting them to work. If only we could have the 10.x look and functions with the 7.2 speed.

1. There is no stock CM7.
2. CM based ROMs are good. CM7 is strongly recommended. Others reported loving MIUI which I've never tried.
3. Forget about HC.
OK so no HC
CM7 options:
1-MiRaGe
2-Phiremod 7.1
3-CyanogenMod 7
also
as far as i could tell the normal OC it to 1.1~1.3Ghz any special things i need to know?
Use plain old CM7 it is by far the best and you don't have to wait for the themer to update his/her rom.

My suggestions:
If you want an e-reader focused experience and plan to buy subscriptions and content from B&N, root their 1.4.1 ROM. You get a nice reader with the ability to jump over the Walled Garden walls.
If you want an Android tablet that can be used for reading books, go with Cyanogenmod 7.1. I run the nightlies myself, and have few issues.
Just be aware that the Android Nook app is nowhere near the same thing as the B&N reader. If you want that "B&N Experience", the B&N ROM is the way to go. If you don't care about B&N stuff, there's no advantage to their ROM, other than maybe the free-form launcher.
I just wish the Android launchers weren't all so grid focused. They make my tablet look like an oversized phone.
Ignore this post.
so... CM7 nightly build, use stock kernel? or is there something better?
Just use the stock kernel. I boot CM7 stable (7.1.0 currently) from SDcard using Verygreen's 1.3. I can't recall the last time I ran the stock firmware. Only reason I can see to use stock is if you subscribe to any magazines, or use their children's books. That is the beauty of running off SCcard, you can always switch back to the stock if you want to.

Dals overclock kernel is already included in the 7.1 stable. So there isn't any other kernels you can use anyway.

I'd put in a vote for MiRaGe.
Nightlies haven't been nightlies for a while due to build problems and CM9 preparations. This means that latest nightly doesn't benefit from latest fixes including those for SOD which also can affect the stable build.
MiRaGe has those fixes in plus a modular kernel which frees up more memory does seem to speed things up. It is a bit smaller as it has some stuff stripped out.
I'm happy with that build. It seems very stable and fast. I'll probably stay with these till CM9 matures a bit more.
moving to mirage from cm7
did anyone use V6 SuperCharger 9 rc4 with it?
Definitely MiRaGe.
No question about it.
I did CM7 for a couple of weeks and then MiRaGe for the past couple of weeks. No comparison. MiRaGe is much faster, much more stable, better battery life. Without a doubt, it's the winner of the two.
Haven't tried Phiremod. I have no reason to try something else.

+1 MiRaGe. If you'd drop by MiRaGe Thread's OP and review the changelog, you'll see there have been lots of improvements to the build including a modular kernel that is based off dalingrin's which is the base for overclocking and has the SOD patch as well. Aside from this, the signal icon/wifi bug on the latest nightly (253) is fixed as well. There's also an optional script called v6 supercharger that adds up to the total speed and ultimately reduces lags on your NC. Performance has been superb and I've been using it for almost a month. mrg666 also syncs to CM Repo if he finds anything new to add he updates it (like nightlies) and it's definitely worth it.
Tapatalkin' it from my rooted NookColor running CM7 MiRaGe [KANG] [7.2 RC] overclocked @ 1.2 GHz
Yup. Right now Mirage is the way to go. Combine it with the V6 Supercharger and you get a steady nice and mostly lagfree experience with quite everything you throw at it.
what settings to use with V6 RC9?

So... Is there a single completely usable ROM out there?

I've flashed almost 10 different ROMS now ever since the Asus ICS update and I'm still getting issues with SOD, RR, rapid battery drain, and/or wifi crashing after deep sleep. I just want my TF101 back. I don't care about Google Now... I just want a usable tablet!!!
You are flashing roms to rid yerself of an issue caused by a kernel?......If the rom You flash doesnt have a custom kernel you won't be solving any kernel issues....
In Short, flash a different kernel.....
Stock has been great for the 3 transformers in our family..
Go back to GB and spend a week on it and see if it does the same.. If so. Then you really have problems

Easily the best experience I have had with my TF since I got it
No RR's no SoD, everything works 100% and super fast, highly recommend trying it out if you haven't already
Pretty happy with Team EOS JB with stock kernel :good:
Tried Megatron and Revolver, reboot and SOD. Now i use ARHD with Harmony ICS at 1.6ghz speed. Stop searching cause it work:good:

wifi crash will be off after deep sleep only got in some ROM not alot, and they had been solve them. If you used any rom u must follow other posts.
I didnt got any issue like that becos i update kernel usually and I follow someone instruction.
recently I used EnergyROM and its make me happiest so maybe no more change ROM... I used 20 or over and I did got those issues like u when i keep update ROM and Kernal...
PS used ES Task Manager when u done any work and click on its widget to clear memory its make RR rate lower
To me cm9 works best... I wanna upgrade to jb but all have problems... cm9 is close to jb.. since some jb features are ported to ics...

Android Revolution HD 3.4.2 is the most stable rom for me. Don't know if you can still get such an old version, though.
I have tried EOS and 3 variations of CM10 (Raymans unofficial stable, Paranoid, LiquidSmooth). I like them all but EOS + KAT 47B gives me no issues to complain about (right now on 79 anyway). The others - last time I tried them - seem to have poorer wifi reception (and I don't mean just a matter of "bars"), occasionally lose wifi after re-awakening, and sketchy-to-non-existent GPS.
Truthfully, the EOS build works well enough for me that I could really care less if ASUS does an official JB upgrade at this point. Smooth, as robust as stock ICS when I left, stock browser working fantastic. I am on build 79 right now, probably upgrade to newer version if/when 4.2 features added.
I was set on getting myself a new tablet for Christmas, but after flashing EOS JB I have no more desire to upgrade to a newer tablet. It does everything I want it to, significantly better than when I bought it.

Great, I'll check out Team EOS' rom and cross my fingers!
holy ****, that did it! EOS and KAT are rock solid!
there are many roms with cool features and stuff but in terms of stability i find stock asus rom the most stable.
If you want the tablet to just work, stick with stock based ICS ROM. That means.... the Energy ROM, ARHD or Revolver.
on your advice

Im using Android Revolution HD 3.5.1. It has GPS problems, but everything else works well. I'd use a 4.1/2 rom but no flash.
Flash does work on jb roms.

Using it on EOS 81 with KAT 47b. Best this tab has ever been.

I have tried all these ROMs and kernels and every time i pick up my tf101 it's dead. SOD constantly. I have to turn it off now everytime i finish using it so that i can use it the next time i come it. Very annoying.
Is there anything else that could be the problem other than kernel/rom (i have tried TeamEOS and KAT and CM10 with latest kat kernel with lidfix).
Thanks be to anyone that helps.

I've tried CM10 unofficial stable too and I really like it. Fast, stable, reliable.

[Q] most reliable and fastest ics rom for tf101

I'm a bit late to the custom rom game for my tf101 but so far, it seems that after trying cm10, my data and apps are much happier with ICS than JB...which is fine with me since stock .27 has been very, very good to me...stable, reliable and good battery life. The problem is that it's very slow.
I'm currently using ENERGY ICS, but it, like most ICS roms, are going the way of the dodo...it's all about the jelly bean.
The ENERGY rom is working just fine for me so far and No Frills is letting me overclock.
Is anybody still working on ICS?
In my opinion the only super reliable ROMs would be the stock, OEM ROMs such as the one I released. Any other CM9 or CM10 based ROM is a community built ROM and will have its bugs and quirks. If you want solid, day to day reliability and all your ports to work, then stick with ICS. I don't see what you gain with JB anyway, the look virtually the same and the code really hasn't changed much.
Team EOS 3 JB Nightlys & KAT Kernel
100% solid, stable and very fast
I would recommend Revolver 4.x + Guevor's 22.6 kernel. I'm on version 4.1.1 for months now. It's stable, reliable - no SOD or RR at all. Oc'ed kernel to 1.4 GHzso it's smooth and fast.
However I've tried CM10 (RaymanFX) as well. It was even faster and smoother BUT I was suffering from poor Wifi and frequent loss of sound, that's why I decided to go back to Revolver ICS. But I definately will flash JB again, once the issues are solved.

.27 has been very stable for me so that's why I chose the Energy ics rom. I want faster while keeping the reliability. My concern was that since it's not being actively supported very much that it wasn't a finished product.
So far, it's working perfectly for me. I'll put it through the paces over the next few days to torture test it.
Best ICS ROM & Kernels.

I recommend Android Revolution HD (ARHD):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1245892
Mike just released version 3.6
I have tried many ROM's but keep coming back to ARHD. It is the most stable and has all of the features I want.
Much more smother & stable than the stock ASUS ROM.
Use Harmony:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693799
or
guevor kernel 22.6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1565519
If you want to overclock.
Good luck,
Rodger
Best ICS ROM for me hands down would be the latest Revolver. Very smooth and great battery life with dock.

I'll keep those in mind if my TF starts getting *****y with me. So far, it's night and day better than stock...faster, smoother and just better all around.
My browser actually loads pages without any problems. I don't have the need to flash for the sake of flashing or even comparing it with the Note 2. The only thing that matters is if what it does is fast/good enough for me.
I tried lots... CM10, Team EOS, Revolver... and they all had major issues making them unusable... plus I like the Asus built-in apps.
Stock (rooted) is the only way to go for me as other ROMs are simply too sluggish. I wish I had time to learn and contribute

I've tried several of the JB and ICS ROMS and always come back to stock 27, rooted and overclocked with guevor's kernel. It's fast and 100% reliable.

I'm not a chronic updater so I mostly look for stability and overall efficiency...not necessarily the newest and fastest...at the expense of stability. Stock ICS .27 has been rock solid for me...no random restarts, good battery life and worked with my apps...(but I don't use a lot of apps).
On the other hand, I do appreciate those who torture test every android iteration so the rest of us can experience vicariously what others are actually doing.

7.2 vs 10b5 vs nightly vs mirage for smoothness

my wifes NC she might want to play around in android but she is a reader and that needs to work well. i tried the latest nightly on a sd card and it felt sluggish, not sure if its because of the card, or the 10 nightly or i didn't play with it that much.
Of these options, for smoothness and less quirks and overall experience, what would be the recommended version to try ??
her version is 1.4.3
thanks so much for the time,
Joel

If she just wants access to a few extra Android apps, and they'll run on 2.3 GB, CM 7.2 is very stable and fast. I have been very pleased with the MiRaGe builds. I'm running current CM10 nightlies, and while they basically work, there are a few problems that might frustrate a non-techie (and make your life more difficult as a result). Web browsing, in particular, seems much slower no matter what browser I use.
In the interests of family contentment, I'd stay with CM 7.2 for now. CM 10 will no doubt improve rapidly, so keep an eye on it.
Sounds great, thanks so much for the explination. Mirage I think it will be, but I'll leave it up to her.
Do nightlies turn to release candidate or how do they progress? Not sure I want to update her reader every day, I know she won't. Lol
Will bench her 32g sandisk in the NC, think the pny was super slow in the 4k random bench. Probably didn't help the cm10 impression this morning. At least I know about it.
Thanks again

PNY are horrible for running off SD. Sandisk will be head and shoulders above the pny.
And nightlies turn to RC when the devs think they are ready. They are basically just a special snapshot of a nightly. They set a nightly aside and allow only bug fixes to that one for a while and then convert it to an RC. Meanwhile the regular nightly process continues. And nightlies do not need to be loaded daily. Pick one, and if happy with it, stay there until you have a problem, then try a newer one to see if better.
Sent from my Nook HD+ using Tapatalk
sandisk flies compared to the pny, it works great !! put the 7.2 mirage on there for a bit, then went to the 10 nightly. she is more familiar with the 10 since ics and jb on her phones. (showed her the alternate boot script, hold power, then press N, super easy and she is glad all her "nook" stuff is there in tact, including her current page in the book she is reading)
thanks for the starting advise, guess i'll be reading for a while, lol

Fastest snappiest rom?

Obviously the Nook is a little underpowered. I put CM 10.1.3 on it last night and it feels a little bit laggy.
What does everyone recommend as the fastest/snappiest rom for someone not concerned about having the newest coolest version like my wife?
Number 1 response is Mirage CM7. But I've been running CM 10.2 nightlies and am quite impressed. Not quite as good on battery life but nearly as quick and every app I've tried works.

CM7.2 Mirage. Nuff said.
I've tried out many of the CM10 based ROMs. They're not acceptable for me due to sluggishness.
I need PERFORMANCE more than FEATURES. Gingerbread may be somewhat old, but it's lightning fast on the NC.
I can even play HD videos on YouTube thanks to the 1.2GHz OC (from 800MHz).
Thanks guys. I guess Mirage is the answer!
