I don't know if this friend of mine made a monumental discovery or is just plain stupid. He told me he used a Samsung USB Jig to get in download mode on the Nexus 7 when he couldn't flash through the usual method. I tried explaining to him that the USB jig can't work on it since the JTAG connector is configured differently, but he insists that it worked.
So, since I don't have the device myself I need to ask you guys. If you have a USB jig at home, please try iton the Nexus 7 and post the results. I suppose that if you have one, you know how they work.
Interesting story, I'll try

Well, I can't say that I'm surprised. Thank you!
He took an extra dose of stupid that day

Wow... Also, it has nothing to do with the j-tag connector. It is the bootloader. So both of you are more or less wrong. Your friend is a lying idiot and you are just misinformed.

If I wanted to try and repurpose a flippy phone to slave to a smart phone, and be able to pick up and end calls, would there be a particular model or OSS base I'd have the best luck with? Like having a smartphone, but my parents don't, and I want to find something bulletproof. If it could it somehow dial out as well, I'd be set, but one thing at a time I guess.

This would be cool to have. I'm sure there are a number of Nokia or Motorola phones out there that would work with Android if you're skilled enough as a hacker.
Gonna dust this off. What other ways could one go about having a flip phone pair to take calls from your smartphone, outside of fabrication wholesale? I dunno any cheaply disposable phones that can be reprogrammed, and maybe the Raspberry Pi could work, but it seems like a waste to throw that much hardware at a device that can stick in your ear. Anypony?

The best I could find was this:

Which I actually found for sale here, but I have no idea how reputable that site is...

I have bought some basic stuff (no phones ) from at dinodirect.com and it was ok for was it was (cheep).

Okay, Nice to know that there is a commercial option, but is there anywhere I can get bluetooth headsets and clamshell cases in bulk? I know a decent amount a solder-fu, and a friend with a CNC, so I might be able to get some sort of kickstarter going maybe perhaps?

Given the reports that Google CS are advising that the screen lift problem has been resolved. Has anybody who recently received a Nexus 7 from Google, got a picture of the internals near the screen bezel that shows what hardware changes have been made ?
If not, then I will continue to assume that the hardware has not been updated... and that the Google CS advice regarding fixes is just "words".
Deag
I think the problem is shorter screws. I don't think anything has changes other then that.

not necessarily hardware revisions, but production runs:

I doubt google CS would know if a hardware issue is resolved and even if they did know they wouldn't know which stock their warehouse is shipping. They will always tell you the tablets are fine. WHat CS rep from any company will tell you over the phone not to order the product?
Hello everyone!
I cracked my Nexus 4 tonight =/ Interestingly, a few weeks ago, it fell 9 feet on hard floor and didn't break. Last night it falls 3 feet from my night stand and it is cooked -__-
Completely unresponsive to touch. Can't even put the thing in Silent/Vibrate LOL
I haven't been able to reach out to LG because of the time, but from collective experience, what's the most economical way to get this fixed?

don't remember the figure off hand, but someone said the repair cost was very reasonable directly through lg. search for the other busted screen threads here..
There are quite a frew threads on this - it happened to me before oem parts were easily available and it was just as expensive if not more to buy it and do it yourself. LG does it for $140.

Are you absolutely sure this was a Nexus 4 kernel? If you in fact flashed a kernel that's not a Nexus 4 kernel, say one for the Nexus 7 then you have a hard bricked phone. Flashing a wrong kernel will basically fry your bootloader as it overwrites it with the wrong devices bootloader or something like that and there is no way to fix it yourself. A JTAG repair will recover your phone and that's not something you can do you have to pay for the service.
If you search the forum for JTAG you will find lots of threads on hard bricked phones like this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089390&highlight=jtag
Here are some links to the guy who does the JTAG repair.

Edit: I actually had to look this up as kexec isn't a kernel but a process added to a kernel that allows hot reloading of a new kernel while a device is running.

Flashing a kernel for the Nexus 7 will hard brick the Nexus 4 and I am afraid the only way out is a JTAG repair, which I provided a link to in my previous post. I haven't heard of anyone recovering their phone any other way. The JTAG service is like $50 and you have to send the phone to the guy who does it. If its a newish phone I'd try and go through Google first to get a new one just don't tell them what you did just say it won't boot up.

New Nexus 4 owner here. I'm scrolling through the Q&A section getting a good laugh/realization of how utterly stupid a vast majority of Android users are.
I'm not new to Android by any means (OG Droid/Thunderbolt/GNex), but I'm loving all these "help!!" threads. 95% of these bricks would never happen or would be fixed if people took the time to read and stopped using these toolkits. I mean you do own a Nexus, it doesn't get easir.
I'm sure the people I've quoted (myself included) have bricked a phone a time or two, but the difference between us and the OP is the fact that we know what we're getting ourselves into and we can read.
OP, it's people like you who ruin the good for everyone else.
Anyway, enjoy the new phone. I'm sure we'll see you back in here soon after you root and unlock bootloader with a toolkit, go to flah a rom and accidentally wipe system, data, and internal storage.

hey guys
I've just received my nexus 7 2012 from Ebay.
The seller clearly stated that the device couldn't charge while turned on.
So now, is there anyway to charge it while it's on, or fix this problem.
It also doesn't interact with the PC when it is plugged in, which is why I bought the tablet in the first place.
Thanks,
Jem
Return it to stock firmware. If it still won't, it's hardware related... Though I don't see how... Haven't read any issues on your situation.

Thanks for your reply,
GSam shows no current being put into the device, and I think it is on stock firmware, I've just bought it as I said and I've done a root check just in case.
The device has already been factory reset when I received it so I'm certain it's hardware.
The previous owner said that the micro USB connected had been replaced, so i'm thinking maybe a whole I/O assembly would help fit if not narrow down the possible problem.
Also, do you think a new battery would help? It's only a power source but some wires to the little connector could be damaged.
Thanks again,
Jem
