So I bought the Nexus 7 today from one of the largest electronics chains in Norway. When I came home and booted it, the boot image was one I recognized from my Sony Xperia's wallpaper, not a nexus one (I have the nexus 4), furthermore I couldn't find it (the flower image) under wallpapers or live wallpapers. Also, there's no setting for automatic screen rotation, is this normal?
The picture attached is how the nexus looked on first boot.
What dies it say under About Tablet in the settings?
Which part?
It's still 4.1.2/JZO54K

OK yeah, that's what I wanted to know.
If it works fine for you, I wouldn't bother returning it.
I would return it without a doubt or at least ask for a better price. If you're paying for something new that's what you sould be getting. Did you break the seal in the box?

Definitely, OP, you should try to boot into the bootloader. fully power off and then power back on while holding down V-. if the bootloader says unlocked dont do any more with it take it back and tell them it is second hand. I would be furious if i paid full price and got a second hand device.
like @bransyeah said did the box have a seal?
The box was sealed, someone PMed me that it might be due to account back-up. It looks brand new as well, no finger marks/scratches etc.
It does however have some noticeable light bleed in the lower left corner... If it really bothers me, I'm going to take it back.
It's Google restore just doing its job. It's why I dislike it and don't use it.

With the next Nexus 7 coming out soon, I think you should return this and get that when it comes out.

Yeah man, wait for the Nexus Rumor 7. All the Android gossip blogs say the next 7 is coming out yesterday.
Horrible advise is horrible.
Its still a great tab

Just to apologize in advance to posting this thread.
I really need help on a choice im on the fence about since next week I will lose my 30 day return period.
Here it is 5 Nexus S's later and almost every unit had a different problem.
1st: soft resets at least 4 times a day.
2nd: wifi doesn't work
3rd: massive screen banding.
4th: back button did not respond to touch.
Now: screen coating is peeling.
I love Gingerbread! Its going to be really hard giving this away. I love the design and profile of this phone.
I've convinced myself that its ok for the weak wifi signal and a Gps that doesn't lock as good as other phones.
I'm torn between returning it or sending it in for repair.
I also have owned every Tmobile smartphone (MT4G, G2, Vibrant), I could exchange it for one of those.
Why lol does the best phone ive seen in a while have to be seriously half-assed.
Not because of the features but because of all those problems I put above.
I want something that works pretty solid and software mix but it looks the world is in capable of doing this.
Thanks And hope some one with patience can help me out.
Idk man I just picked up nexus s today from bestbuy, I had the vibrant and the problems you've had software/device related I have not seen on mine. Mine just OTA updated about 2 hrs ago to 2.3.1. I havent had it long enough to comment on peeling but ya.
Its solid device to me so far, But I understand what your saying after 5 NS later.
Yeah I really dont feel disappointed. Just sad. lol
I dont want to send it in because thats 2 weeks without it And I HATE Samsung especially their costumer support!
Well I know ur sad about it, But in order for stuff to be changed its gotta cost samsung money that all these phones r coming back. I mean its a shame, but maybe you still have a old android phone to hold ya over?
Nope lol I sold my nexus one....worst mistake of my life I guess Ill just do the return and hopefully my patience will pay off.
What sucks is that even after six months Samsung wont improve this phone as far as defects go. Look at the vibrant lol
If you have a good one with no problems hold on to it man because I wish my luck was good enough to have a good one.
On my third one here, will use vmy black tie for another eventually. Shop around. I went to different best buys. Some get bad batched. One had 10 all with the creased glass screen. Another had none. Some of these phones were made days before the launch so though its disappointing, I believe there are good ones. I have one now but the stupid platinum case already scratched my phone.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Like the poster above me, I would try to exchange at a completely different Best Buy. Bad batches are called so for a reason--the entire batch may be faulty.
I picked up my Nexus S at 8:00AM Launch Day and haven't had a single issue with it at all. I had to go through three MT4Gs before I returned it completely, and three G2s before I was satisfied with the last one(it still had issues, but at that point, I was tired of dealing with it). And on the screen coating thing: I don't know what coating people are talking about and if there is such a coating, then I think alot of folks are expecting too much out of it. Review/unboxing videos and my own device had fingerprints showing up the second people started using it. Do folks honestly expect touchscreen phones not to show fingerprints/smudges ever? That's unrealistic, imo.
And it's only under direct light(i.e. a directional lamp pointed right at it) that I see them at all. In day to day use, it's not an issue for me.
story like this, makes me feel a really really lucky guy, since i ordered mine by mail.
it'd have been a nightmare if it had any of those defects
I appreciate all the insight so far.....
If i do go back to an old one it would probably be the G2
but Im thinking of getting another one and fit it with a screen protector right away to stop this peeling garbage.

you reminded me of my friend who bought an iphone 4 the other day and he is like you " and me " he found a dead black pixel in the middle of the screen. the poor bastard couldnt sleep the night. stairing at it all the time. he knew he can go to apple store in the morning the next day. but still he couldnt sleep about it.
when he told me, i was crying laughing at him.
Im just going to call it quits with samsung lol They should just stick to TVs
I got a Led 40 inch and no problems!!
Im never going to get a samsung phone again and im going to make sure I book mark this sucker so if I do feel tempted Ill look back at my self hahahah
Oh and ll_l_x_l_ll, man i did have that problem with the vibrant and I lost some sleep on that man for real lol
Mine had a lot of these same issues the OP pointed out. I returned it, but not because of said issues lol.. I needed some extra cash for Sandy Bridge!

Have you tried returning your phone at another best buy? (if you can) as others have said, if your local store has a bad batch and sales are low you may keep getting units from the same batch.
Depending on the staff, you could also ask about the number of returns that store has had recently.
Seems a shame after 5 phones not to try once more in the hope you get a good one!

This doesn't sound like a bad idea whatsoever. Seriously... I'm on my 4th SNS. I just love it too much to give up. I did two swaps at one best buy, fully returned it and drove to another one. This one seems solid now, and I have a month if I change my mind, but if that's the case, I'll return it and go online. Sounds like you guys have been having luck, no?
If you look for defects you're going to find them.

Hi,
I am wondering if I should exchange my device. There is a minor problem with the screen. It is not really a detached screen as I haven't notice any pop up so far. Yet, I can hear little cracking sounds when I pressed the area around the front facing camera. So, what you guys think I should do? Also, if I get a new device, will all my downloaded apps be there once I signed in my google acount?
Great thanks!!!
I'm not sure if you should return it but if you think it could get worse it wouldn't hurt, and once you get your new tablet you can restore your Google account with all the apps you have back onto the new one.

Does it really bother you? If it does, exchange it. If it doesn't, keep it.
Or to put it another way, would you have ever noticed it if people here didn't point it out? You could get a perfect device when you exchange it, could get one with a different problem.

If it's not perfect return it. There is no reason to live with it. That's what the warranty is for.

It doesn't bother me much. As I said, the area does not pop up and the creaking sound comes out only when I press the area on purpose(wont't touch the camera at all). I expect the product to be perfect even it is 250. Just wanna see if you guys will bear a minor defect or returning it.
I doubt you would've noticed if you hadn't read about it here. Don't nitpick as long as it works.
It has plastic parts. Plastic creaks.

I disagree with the "don't nitpick" statement. Did you paid 250+ dollars for a tablet that squeaks and crackles if you touch it a certain way? That is what a warranty is for. Its your choice to take advantage of your warranty or not, however, just the fact that you asked should answer your question. I had one dead pixel and returned mine for a new one and the second one is perfect. If it wasn't I would have likely had my money refunded and waited until the hardware kinks were worked out. There is always risk involved when being an early adopter of new tech... but the risk isn't that you have to eat a defective device. It is personal preference but when I spend money I worked to earn and purchase a device brand new I expect it to be perfect out of the box. If it is a manufacturer defect then use your warranty and get a device that doesn't make you want to ask if you should return it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Be careful with this one. If the screen itself is fine and doesn't raise, and you are suffering no other problems, I would keep it. The replacement could just as easily have the screen raise problem.
The creaking is the casing I believe, if it's not in area you will be pushing lots in daily use I would just keep it.
I've had plenty creaky gadgets before, and I found a neat trick. Get some silicon based lubricant spray, put some on your finger and rub your finger round the contact surfaces between the casing and the back cover, including all the clips etc. Works 100% of the time for me.

Then just return that one and get a new one. I really would not care if I had to send back 100 Nexus 7s to get a perfect one. It also keeps you from getting it too if you think about it. I know it can be a hassle sometimes, but that is what a warranty is for.

Thank you for your comment and I agree with you so much. I am just afraid if I exchange another one that is worse than my first one. But you are right, newly developed product is not an excuse. I also worked hard to buy myself this little toy and I don't want to play with it with special care. Since it is just the fourth day of my purchase, I will keep it for couple more days to see if it is actually a problem to me.
first of all i'm from Malaysia and i bought my nexus 7 from a electronics company called "senheng" roughly more than a month ago..i was pretty satisfied with it until recently all the bugs and defects are starting to annoy me A LOT...
1) sometimes the touch screen is not responsive.i try pulling down the notification tray but it doesnt get pull down..
2) they are black lines on the screen sometimes when playing games or surfing facebook..it does happened quite often although it only appears for a split second.
3) this is the worst defect of all.sometimes the tablet acts on it's own,it's like it's having a mind of it's own.it would just jump back to the homescreen, swipe around and open up apps on it's own when i'm actually using the tablet.Basically it's like a ghost is using the tablet. So i try to find the cause of this problem and i'hv found than whenever i try to swipe around really quick the tablet will become not responsive for a while and it'll start acting on it's own, so i feel that there's a problem with the touch screen panel.
I went back to "senheng" the other day, hoping that they would replace a new tablet for me but they refuse to, so most probably i'm going to ring up ASUS tomorrow to report about my problems and hope that they would replace me a new unit. My main problem is the 3rd, i can live with the other two but the 3rd one is seriously bugging me.
Is anyone having the same problem as me? If so, what did u do to solve it?
p/s : i'm on stock 4.2 rooted...
Sounds like your touch screen is screwed. You shouldn't be getting lines on the screen.
Also there was some bugs with the touch drivers in the early stages. Have you updated to 4.1.2 or 4.2? Knowing your version would give better results.
Why did they "refuse" you a replacement? Is it damaged? Over the return limit?
I know this may have a moral stance, but I don't think anyone could tell a N7 apart from another N7. The serial number is on a plastic sticker that is easily removed. You could possibly purchase a new one, swap devices, and return the old one/new box. Or buy a new one and use it until Asus repairs your old one... then return it.
I've returned 2 [I fried one with a bad bootloader and swapped a 16 for a 32 (paying the difference obviously)]. They all just opened the box to make sure there were no obvious physical damage. The back cover isn't "meant" to come off, so they won't tear it down in the store.
If you want to physically kill one, download and flash a Samsung Galaxy Nexus bootloader. It won't even power on. No power + No Sticker = no way to tell.
The only reason I'm saying this is simply because store policies shouldn't be too strict on their exchanges for defective units. I've had equipment fail just after 30 days and you are left with junk. I understand 30 days is there for a reason and it is a good policy, but it should be a fine line. A day or two shouldn't matter.

they wouldnt replace me a new one cuz they said that they're gonna have to repair it and bla bla bla..i mean come on, the whole touch screen panel is screwed and they want to try fixing it?! my warranty is not over yet, it has a 2 year warranty.
i dont think we can actually return the tablet within 14days here in Malaysia, we dont have this kind of policy(not sure).
what do u mean for me to physically kill one? u mean i should just killed it and return to the store for them to replace a new one?
My touch screen also has started flaking out as you describe from time to time. Took it back to the store but do you think it would do it then? No, it acted normal until I got home.

Fortunately I havent had these issues on my 32gb N7. One would think it would be under ASUS manufacturer warranty. I know its a last resort but if you have to then unroot and relock the boot loader and send it back to ASUS. I know the idea of not having your tablet for a while is crappy but if that's the only option...

anyways, i'm gonna go to asus service centre today and hopefully they'll replace my unit with a new one...lol
Idk if they do or not. That's just the general rule of thumb when sending a device back for repair/exchange. Mainly BC they can say the issue may have been caused as a result of you unlocking and rooting your N7. That's why Google threw in the disclaimer when a boot loader unlock is attempted.

Most of the trade in web sites including amazon do not accept rooted tablet. Any suggestions on trade in programs that will accept a rooted (very good condition) tablet. Other than selling it on ebay or elsewhere. I am looking to trade in for another android tablet (nexus 7).

Why don't you un-root it? With it being rooted, that would not increase the trade value of the tablet by much.
So I just unroot. I was under the impression once its rooted it pretty much loses the warranty forever so unrooting wont help. I will try unrooting and send it back to amazon (where I bought it from), and see what happens. Thanks.

I had sent my xoom tablet to MaxBack and since I did not accept their re-quote they sent me back my xoom. When I powered it on, the colors including the Motorola Logo have a blue tint. And its very very prominent, not just light but a clearly distorted bluish tint.
Could they have damaged display of the device or is it some setting related, anyone know?

Its weird. Mine had CM10.1 nightlie from Apr 12 when I sent them and the one I got back had the same too. But now after receiving I locked back the xoom to factory settings thinking may be its display settings related. But it has blue all over it. Camera too, when I go into camera blue patches are all over the screen. It definetley seems like messy affair to deal with them now.

For giggles, reroot it flash an updated ROM. See if it makes a difference.
Things seem to getting only worse with this device. I saw this message and thought to try rooting it again. But only if I could turn the device on. The display wont even come up now. Couple of times it flickered with the display of home screen and thats it now even if I am hard booting nothing happens, display is just blank.
I'll keep trying and will try to root it again if it allows me to.

Very unfair practice this company has. The supervisor from MaxBack called me and said that they did not have any other xoom in their inventory at that time and the device display issue must be because I rooted the device. I told him I have been using the device in rooted state for months now. He is not willing to accept its because of something they did. He said such issues are imminent when rooted and it could have happened on the day I mailed them the device so its not something that they can do anything about. And he says because the device was rooted they rated the device worth $46 but due to this issue now he is willing to increase it to $56. I just hung up the phone. Its totally unfair and ridiculous of them to so bluntly lie. The tablet was flawless before I sent them and now it wont even power on. And he says its because I rooted. Unbelievable, worst experience the very first time of dealing with MaxBack. Now all I can do is dump this in trash, they totally messed up the device.
I also asked him if they saw any issue when they received the tablet. He said they did not see any issue when they received the tablet. Still he says, we have seen such issues with rooted devices so your custom rom or rooting must have caused the issue not our testing of the device. It was pointless.

Any headway on getting your device to boot?
before receiving it back from MaxBack, I had already submitted a trade in at amazon assuming I will be able to unroot.
I did unroot after I got it back from maxback although the display was not good and eventually display went completely blank. But I did send it to amazon anyway. I am still waiting to hear from them. I think I may not get anything/much from amazon as I had opted for "no return". Will have to see, they are still processing my trade in.

Lol, where do you find all these funky tablets? I haven't "really" closely examined my screen, but no issues. . It did irk me when my D2 started getting lots of dust under one corner of the screen, so I wouldn't go for a tab that had that prob new either.

Just curious, what store did you buy this from? Wouldn't they say "NO" after a certain number of exchanges?

I've been there with other tablets... Open it up at the customer service desk before leaving the store. Fortunately, I got a good N7 on the first try.

With the ****ty QC on Asus' part. Yeah. you can.
Isn't the display bonded to the glass now? I know I've had dust get under the screen of other phones/tablets in the past but that shouldn't be an issue with the new N7 unless it was there at the factory.
first post here...
.
got my 1st this morning, turned it on RIGHT away saw red pixel...
god damn i thought... here we go... went back to gamespot (Great customer support @ bellevue sq mall) and they exchanged it...
I used the second one all day but i just ran a dead pixel test and what do you know, I found a second one on this one too...
I think I'm going to wait until google gets their **** together, I am sick of wasting my time driving back and forth between stores and feeling like an ass infront of these people returning this device showing them the dead pixel...
/rant
I've gone through 3 nexus 7 tablets. best buy refunded me, so that's good. went to gamestop since none were at best buy. 2 defected ones (dead pixel...black dot in screen). so now i am waiting on the second batch of units from gamestop before exchanging again
so reading that you exchanged 4 times gives me hope! lol

I feel dumb just showing the problem to them. I wonder what they think of me...
But I just force myself to think that it isn't the store's fault, but Google. and not to care if they think I'm crazy
Yeah I was surprised when I got a good one on my first try, too.
Its hard to get a perfect screen on a high res display like this one. I hope you find a good display and share the awesomeness with us

going back to gamestop... 3rd trip now... lord help me...
Asus has terrible quality control.
I bought an expensive motherboard that they say is tested to be sure 100% working, and they even offer a 5 year warranty on. When I got it, one of the PCI ports was dead.
Sure is tested 100%
Got mine this AM at Best Buy. Told the guy at the pickup counter I wanted to take it out and turn it on first and why. He didn't mind. Mine's puuuurrrfect!
I just got back from exchanging my first 16gb. Had a big dust chunk under the glass up in the top left corner.
Felt silly explaining that I couldn't unsee it, and I really just didn't want it to get worse since it was obviously sealed badly. Best Buy swapped it out for me no problem, but did investigate before doing the exchange.
I also complained about the crackly speakers, but it looks like my new unit has pretty much the same symptom. I guess the audio engineer who posted here was right about the amp just dropping bits to control volume instead of actually applying analog gain. :/ Maybe there will be a software fix down the line. (My NS4G had an app with a ton of tweaks to the chip including changing audio pathways etc...)
Turns out my new unit has a hot pixel. It's just one though... I'll probably do a warranty exchange with Asus in a month after some new batches have been made. I don't want to keep gambling right now.
she ajuchst
I went to game stop at bellevue sq in WA for the second time.. great customer support once again
manager did come out and investigate... but I told him about all the issues it's been having and he understood...
it's not about telling them that once you see you can't unsee, etc... it's about telling them you are not settling for a defective unit
asus needs to figure it out...
edit: lol put catpcha in title by accident
