I don't understand the hype around it. Why carry a controller around to play games on a 5 inch screen? Makes 0 sense to me. I was able to play Metal Gear Solid, FF7 & 9, Tekken 2 & 3 no problem with the fpse OSD. If you could somehow transform the controller and the z into some kind of nvidia shield, that would be a different story..

I have been doing this lately when I am staying in hotels for work to watch bbc iplayer etc and using a bluetooth mouse to drive the phone.
I will be interested to try a controller and see how well it works using the Z as a games machine so I am glad the functionality is there!

I just tried to connect one, but it requires usb adapter for syncing or for work, so it is too complicated.

You only have to do this once! I have had this ability on my Tablet S for the past 6 months or so, it makes playing games a lot easier. You don't always have to use the PS3 controller though...

Is the usb adapter just a normal usb host cable you would use to connect a usb drive to the z?

Yup, just the normal micro host cable. Then plug in Usb to mini into your controller. Sync them up and you're done! Disconnect and play wirelessly! You can use SixAxis Controller to add support to games that don't natively support the controller.

You just have to connect one time with the cable to pair it, after that you can use it wireless until you pair it with another device and you need to re-pait it with the cable. It's a one step operation easy and fast.

Sweet! i saw they had this for the Xperia S - but on 4.1.2 they didn't have the dualshock options - so confirming once more, this is on the C6603 4.2.2 Spain Stock Rom?

i upgraded to 4.2.2 yesterday and now i see the settings in xperia settings! sweet! but problem for me - it works while connected to USB through the OTG cable, but does not work wirelessly! i tried connect/reconnecting rebooting, bluetooth on/off about 20x...........guessing my controller my be messed up... it was hit and miss sometimes with recgonizing it even with the usb cord..
any suggestions? i want to use it wirelessly for sure!

Question: if you pair a PS3 controller for the first time..does it then work with all PS3 controllers or do you need the cable for everytime you try a new controller?
edit: sorry didn'tread

You need to pair each controller as the other controllers will still be paired with the ps3.

Did you try with your PS3 wirelessly ? If it works with PS3 then your mobile or its connexion is the problem
Also it doesn't works with all game, tried with The Dark Night Rises without results.

Strange, for me its seems to work as should using FW 4.2.2 .423 ES, check your controller first with a PS3, also when you use OTG cable in the xperia settings it marks a blue notification when the phone recognizes the controller after that just disconnect and use bt instead.

It wont work here, i bought a female usb connector so that i can connect the USB cable of my Xperia z with the USB cable of my PS3 controller. Anyone an idea why this wont work? I think it gives the same effect like the cable discribed in other massages (from Xperia to USB)...

Wireless 360 controller

So I have the wireless USB dongle for connecting my 360 controller to my computer, anyone have any idea if this could also be used for connecting a 360 controller on the Xoom wirelessly?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I used a wireless mouse this way with an otg cable, so the potential is there, can't give you a definite answer though
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I have an otg cable and still can't get this to work. They touted this at Google io so I know it can work.
I was thinking about this with ps3 and 360 controllers earlier. I'm thinking there's a good chance the wireless dongle will work for the 360 controller, but the thing that annoys me is that--other than just putting the xoom flat on the table--there won't really be a good way to prop the xoom up for a good viewing angle with where the ports are.
Edit: if the dongle doesn't work, it's going to have to be the "charge and go" or whatever that plugs into the controller and has a usb connector.
I could be wrong, but in the presentation I dont think they said the wireless 360 controller itself - they said PS3 and 360 Controllers and since they did say the PS3 wouldnt work through bluetooth I assumed the 360 Wireless wouldnt work either but the full USB 360 would.

Well that's dumb. I guess I could find a cheap USB controller. Just tired of spending money. I already have a wii classic controller, just not the actual wii controller. I think I would rather go wireless with the wii controller.

Yeah, I have the datel wireless classic controller ordered since before the update was announced (should come in tomorrow!).
EDIT: 360 controller charger adapter does NOT transfer data. Whoops!
Let me know how that works for you, may go that route

If you want to use your 360 controller without buying another one, this is probably the cheapest option:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Black-Play-Charge-Kit/dp/B000OYMYZQ/ref=dp_cp_ob_vg_title_1
This basically just makes the 360 controller a usb device while charging it, so I can't see why this wouldn't do the trick.

I have this and it has never seem to connect to my computer, I don't think the USB cable transfers data
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
the usb cable does not transfer data it just charges the battery using usb from the Xobx. I have this for my Xbox. I would also like a wiresless control like the PS3 or 360. I use my wiimote now but i dont like the way the buttons are setup.
Yes as others said, the charge cable does NOT make your controller a usb controller, it only uses usb to charge it. I've never played with the dongle and my xoom hasn't arrived yet but I would assume the dongle uses different drivers than the usb controller. You might be able to get it to work by finding those drivers.

Yes, it works! If you're talking about this dongle, I also have it and can confirm it works. I've been using it this afternoon to play some emulator games with my wireless 360 controller!
It's awesome, because you can connect multiple 360 controllers to the Xoom this way. The problem with that though, is that the Xoom can't seemingly differentiate between input on controller 1 and input on controller 2.

I use the standard portfolio case and just put the Xoom in that upside down. The screen orientates itself to flip and then the ports are on top. Aside the branded logos on the screen being upside down you would never know the difference.
Here ya go!
It can be used to navigate the homescreens and menus, but it doesn't work too well for that. Seems to work well with Gensoid though, haven't tried it with anything else yet.
I was on the latest Tiamat kernel until 3.1 dropped, then followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074609
I haven't done anything else special to make this work. It just did! When in Gensoid, I just went Settings>Input Settings>Key Mappings, and mapped out the necessary Genesis controls. The 360 input shows as "unknown" in the settings, but it still seems to work great

guys what gamepad is currently working for your 3.1 acer iconia?, i tried 2 gamepads already but both of them did'nt work

Hey, sorry for not reporting a controller that will work. So far I don't have one that is seen by the Iconia. I've tried a couple different wired generic usb controllers and a wireless Xbox controller with the usb adapter.
I would like to save someone the trouble of buying a usb wireless adapter for a wireless Xbox controller specifically for their A500. I've tried one, and the dongle powers up and appears to be functional, the controller won't sync to it. Works great on the pc and I highly recommend one for that.
Maybe someday, but it doesn't seem to work for now.

out of curiosity, in snesoid and nesoid when i go to set any buttons other than depad i get an <unknown> when i press any buttons.... for whatever reason the dpad works fine, and in another snes emulator my gamepad works fine i can use all the buttons no problem as well in playstation emulators. Dang. I wish Tiger Arcade scaled correctly with Honeycomb. All Metal Slugs and tons of great fighting games would rock with a controller (duh).
Tiger Arcade scales fine on Froyo tablets but not Honeycomb. Just a tiny window.

Lack of Ports

I may be stuck with my a500 for a while unless someone starts releasing accessories. when I travel my usual set up is as follows. I hook my hdmi cable from the dedicated port on my tablet to the hdmi on the TV. then hook up my Belkin multi usb port to the dedicated full sized usb port on my tablet. then I plug my external hard drive to to one port and my mouse and keyboard into the other. now I can sit back in bed and control my tablet from the bed, surf the net play games and watch movies. I have searched but have not found any adapters that allow usb and hdmi at the same time. I really want the note but use this combination when on the road. any suggestions?
TIA

Thank that should solve the Hdmi out issue. now i guess i just need a usb adapter to connect my hard drive, keyboard and mouse. I can use my belking usb 7 port to add more usb connections. I just hope that the note can handle all of those connections without issues. anyone tried hooking up multiple usb ports? I guess this solution adds another 150 tot eh price of my device. the biggest thing i will miss is easy file sharing with a usb stick. When on business trips or even vacation I can get large files by just plugin in my usb stick. seems technology is making things harder for me.

So, you're able to power your external harddrive with the tabs battery and dont have to, like with my adapter, have to connect your harddrive to the mains power? Is that assumption right?
If so, and if its not a bother can you provide info on the adapter you use please mate, im sure others like me would appreciate it i.e. model or product web link

no its a misunderstanding. Of course the external hard drive has to be hooked up to wall power. I even had a problem hooking my usb stick directly to my tv's usb without choppy video. When ever and where ever i travel there are always enough outlets to plug in my hard drive and tablet. The only thing that I am waiting on is a good solution to hook up my tablet to the tv's hdmi while having an exteranl hard drive mouse and keyboard attached. the above suggestions may work. After reading the reviews on the wifi hdmi adapter it seems video playback may be a concern. most of the business men i know use a usb stick to take files off their work pc if they need to bring them home or take them on a business or vacation trip. cloud storage isn't always viable because sometimes the files are large and internet connection is not always available and sometimes way to slow. having the full sized USB makes the task a whole lot easier. carrying info in a micro usb card for file transport doesn't work well because it is too easily misplaced. Anyway I am just weighing the positives and negatives and the solutions have been very helpful.

Cheers, was getting my hopes up there
As far as connecting to the tv wirelessly, if the tv in the the hotel you frequent are smart tv (wifi) capable, then you can stream your media over wifi using dlna apps on the market like imediashare, theres a few others, but if you want to mirror everything thats on your tab wirelessly, then it looks like the screencast hub is your solution assuming your ok with the price,.
Maybe a usb to hdmi adapter might work in your situation assuming you have enough usb ports for all you devices, and thats assuming a usb to hdmi adapter would even work on our tab
Just use one of the portable wireless HDDs. No more problems iwth connecting it to the Note or any other device as long as it has WiFi.

looks like wireless is going to be my only real choice. I wanted to stick with wired because there would be no connectivity issues just plug and play. So wifi from my hdd to my tablet and then wifi from my tablet to my tv. hope that works. and Bluetooth for my mouse and keyboard.

In your situation, getting a wifi harddrive with a usb connection, for usb sticks, would solve the usb stick problem, and would be future proof for other devices with wifi, but no usb port, although, im just assuming here, that there is such a thing as a wifi hd with a usb port,. If money is no concern and indeed if there is such a thing as a wifiHD with usb port i mean theres gotta be...... right?), might be worth it, gd luck
I also own a a500 and recently bought note 10.1.
I must tell you the difference in performance and screen colors and contrast is pretty big from one to another.
Even though I must say all those add ons to get what we had from default on a500 is kind of dissappointing.
For hdmi you have two ways...the dongle, which is WiFi based....that is if you go to a cabin for a weekend with no WiFi outside your city....it won't work. Or you have the adapter which unfortunately works only if it is also connected to to AC which in my opinion also limits the portable function or idea of a tablet...I mean it is like doing the same connections you can do with your notebook....
So tough choice there, maybe consider as I....having both.
Same thing here with usb otg adapter.
Acer did sacrifice thickness over having standard usb and mini hdmi ports but it really did the trick.
Kind of mad here with Sammy as you may say....good luck and if you find new ways of having less accessories please let me know!!!

Was thinking out loud mate
If i were gonna get a wifi hdd, id check for ones with additional benefits, i.e. a usb port (host), so if i have anything on a usb stick, i can connect that to the wifi hdd aand transmit it over wifi via wifi hdd........thing is, i have no idea if there is a wifi hdd product out there that has a host usb port, my brief search showed nothing, would be a nice feature though

I've had *terrible* luck trying to connect drives to the Note 10.1... this is probably the single 'failure' the Note has in general.
There are two different problems at work. First, the USB port only sources 100ma. That makes it fine for most keyboards, mice and *some* USB memory sticks (but not all), but forget anything that needs more power. Worse, even devices that ARE self-powered will draw more than 100ma just to drive their USB connection and that trips the Note's 'overcurrent' warning causing it to shut down the USB port.
Weirdly, even if you go through a powered USB hub, you still get this behaviour... that doesn't even make sense.
The bizarre thing is - if you connect in just the right sequence with just the right timing - you sometimes *can* get it to work, so it's not that the Note isn't capable of handling the USB load - Samsung's software is purposefully tripping on devices by enforcing the USB current limit too tightly (well or I have a defective Note or USB dongle - but I've tried several and they all seem to work this way).
The other problem is that there doesn't seem to be integrated support for NTFS (or exFAT, from what I can see), so you're stuck with FAT32. I've switched all my USB keys over to NTFS as I work with large files regularly. It also doesn't seem to support things like USB ethernet dongles.
Ironically, this is one place where the Asus Prime really shines - you can hang almost anything on the USB port and it'll work fine and the dock, because it has a big battery built in, seems to handle heftier devices quite well. It even supports NTFS out of the box.

I think you're confusing WiFi and WAN. If the dongle is WiFi based, you can bring a pocket WiFi access point and connect all your devices to it. Where you are isn't really relevent since it's not connected to the internet through cable, DSL or cellco. These pocket access points are *tiny*.
Here's an example of one:
http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/home-sol...350-wireless-n-pocket-router-and-access-point
Looks like I will have to stick with the a500 nd get the small note 2 for stylus use. The a 7 inch note would be perfect.

"External" gamepads with Shield

Hi there,
let me explain my goal. I want to use my shield for all my PC gaming. Portable around the house, and that is great when the main TV is being used by other members of my family.
But also it's great to connect it to the TV when it's available. My main PC is a desktop one used for working and when I play I don't want to be there. I prefer sofa, bed, etc.
So, I wanted to have a fine console experience in my sofa in front of the tv, but wirelessly. I have these accesories for it:

USB OTG, HDMI, USB hub, USB-ethernet (the one that actually works is this: http://plugable.com/products/usb2-e1000 ), and wireless Xbox controller with the usb receiver.
Well,
I almost have it, but not 100%.
HDMI works
Ethernet works
USB hub works
Xbox controller works but D-pad does not, and that is frustrating, because every other button works fine and it's a joy to lie in my sofa to play that way. Some games need the D-pad and because of that this is not a solution.
The other way to use the Xbox controller is leaving it connected to the PC and it works good when I'm in front od the TV because my PC is just upstairs. BUT, most of the games when launched from Shield ignore the controller of the PC and only work with the Shield itself...
Is anyone crazy enough to try this way of gaming?
I know the Nyko dock would help to achieve this, but it's completely missing since it was announced...
Would a bluetooth gamepad work with all the buttons (D-pad included) for a perfect PC streaming experience???
Tomorrow I friend will let my try a PS3 controller. Let's see how it performs. I did not want to root, but I will at least to try it wirelessly.

I use an OnLive controller. I haven't tried the XBox 360 Wireless dongle, but Bluetooth works great. If you're looking for a controller that has similar build quality and characteristics, I strongly recommend the OnLive one, even without the service (I don't have the service, just the control).
I'll give the dpad a try this weekend and verify it works on my SHIELD though, since I haven't tested that extensively.

Thanks for answering.
Yesterday I tried a PS3 controllorer. I rooted my shield to use it wirelessly with the sixaxis app, and it works exactly the same as the Xbox controller. All the buttons are OK, except D-PAD ones.
It's weird, beacues the D-pad buttons work fine in the shield interface but not with PC-Steam games. It's a very small detail but if Nvidia solves this in future update would be perfect.

I didn't try streaming (I handle only the Android side of things) but I'll make sure a bug exists about it. I'll bet it'll get fixed pretty quick.
Same issue here!
I am having the EXACT same issue! Everything works perfectly except for the d-pad. I've also noticed that the right analog stick does not work like a "mouse" on the home screen like the native controller does.
If these 2 items would be fixed, I would have a veritable portable "steam machine" in my living room!
Will follow this thread and hope there is a resolution soon! I bought the Xbox 360 Receiver for this express purpose! Note: The wired 360 controller works perfectly, so was surprised about the wireless one not working.
The wired one is special, but I'd expect thus stuff to get fixed. I'll try to look into it.

What do you mean it does not work?
PC receiver for Xbox controller works fine with the shield.
You can see my setup in the picture above and it works the same as a wired one.
You need the controller receiver:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2
And a true Xbox 360 wireless controller:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-Glossy-Black/dp/B003ZSP0WW/ref=pd_sim_vg_1
If you root your shield, the PS3 controller is a good choice too. Less cables involved because you will be using bluetooth to pair with the shield.
But as we said, it's not a perfect experience. Many PC modern games use D-Pad buttons for extra options and without them you can't play properly.
I think you're being too literal on "not working" there King Conan. Read his post, he's having the same issue with lack of d-pad on the wireless. He considers this to be not working probably because of games that require the controls. I would have to agree, I use d-pad all the time.
but he says the wired works and the wireless don't...
Both work exactly the same, that's why I didn't get him.
It's not just the wireless with the d-pad problem, wired is the same way?
Yes D-PAD problem happens wired or wireless.
The funny thing is that DPAD works fine in Android interface but doesn't in PC steam games.
Gotcha, sorry. I read the entire thread but for whatever reason I took away the problem was exclusive to wireless.
Hopefully they fix it in the next update, I just ordered a micro-HDMI cable and USB OTG adapter ;/
The wired and wireless ones report currently to Android at the low level.

Sweet! I've been trying to get the Mogo Pro controller working with my Shield, but to get the Universal Driver to work, it has to be rooted. Not going to root my Nvidia Shield, having too much fun with it. Once I get a reasonable wireless controller working with my Shield, this thing is going to be a powerhouse game console connected to a 50" TV.

What you mean exactly by replicate? Every button and stick funcion can be remapped.
I don't have an xbox controller but I imagine that the kernel has the gamepad modules so if you are rooted it should work. If you are not rooted this is also possible but I would need a data capture so I can include it on the next release.

I think numeric keypad would also be useful. As I have an harmony and an universal IR receiver Flirc I simply added another device that has much more buttons to configure and made proper assignments. I was using this device in my previous media center. With the keypad I can shortcut to movies starting by a given letter, for example if I click "2" two time I go to movies startin with B. In a big library this is quite useful. I don't know why they go cheap on these remotes with only a couple of buttons.
I accidentally (I bought it for an MK802IV android tv stick I have on other tv) found a 5 usd remote that also works on shield, it feels kinda cheap (because it really is ) but all buttons work, even the mouse and power buttons, it's powered by 2 triple A batteries, I tested it on shield with the remote's usb receiver plugged to the micro usb port in the back of the shield using an otg connector .

It also works connected to any of the "normal" sized usb ports, but they're being used by two 4tb external hdd's, so I connected it to the micro usb port instead, I also could've used a powered usb hub, my d-link dub-h7 works fine on shield, I guess I was just too lazy to do so . Remote size, when compared to the stock remote, is not very different, just a lot thicker (as expected, since the stock remote is really very thin), on top of the photo you can see the otg connector ("normal" size usb female to micro usb male) and the usb receiver that comes with the 5usd remote. I should mention that I only tried it on kodi, es explorer and shield menus, not sure how it does on other apps.

I just noticed that it's missing a PLAY/PAUSE button. Too bad, I use that a lot.
Agree, I wish the OEM remote wasn't so thin. It's ridiculous. I'd rather have a thicker remote that feels good in the hand and I don't have to charge as much because the battery is so tiny.

I've been searching a lot about this but, I'm yet to find a remote that's compatible with shield, is powered with batteries (that way you don't have to charge it all the time), has proper media control buttons on front, a decent keyboard on the back and can connect via bluetooth / wifi without the need of a usb receiver
