im a on custom rom right now and i have nandriod back up of stock touch wiz. if there is an ota update can i just go back to the back up i made and just do the update
Won't work if you have a custom recovery. You'd have to wait for a modified update than you can flash.

Since you are already running a custom rom you can just flash an MDL based rom. However, you will not have the MDL modem/firmware. If you want this either get your phone back to factory stock via Odin or if you can restore a nandroid and stock recovery (whatever it takes to flash the OTA update) then you can get to the MDL stock rom with MDL modem/firmware. From what I have read most have to Odin back to stock but a few have said with stock recovery and no app changes the OTA flashed successfully. Personally I would just use Odin, take the update, root/custom recovery, and be done with it. Your choice.
**EDIT....can now flash the modems separately without having to use the OTA procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919
I am kind of in the same boat. I have stock rom but I rooted it and installed custom recovery. I can't seem to find any of the flashable modded OTA updates. Can some one point me to them?

I'm running NexusBeam 3.0 on my Nexus S i9020T. I just downloaded official OTA 4.0.3. Now I'm flashing official 2.3.6.
My question is, do I have to unroot before I flash official OTA because its gonna remove root?
If u have cwm it won't flash. U have to flash a pre rooted zip that cwm friendly or go all the way back to stock.

So as I've gathered I can't update OTA when one is available if I have a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP). My question however is if I will be able to apply the update using my custom recovery, and if so, will I retain root and all my frozen bloat from TiBa? Thanks.

You are referring to custom ROM's correct? I was hoping to remain stock and root and still be able to apply updates.
Maybe I should be the bullet and flash a custom ROM that still incorporates TW (want the gestures).

Motorola device manager says that there are updates available for my razr m. I'm wary to update "OTA" because I dont want to loose root/bootloader.
I'm pretty happy with the stock ROM (still called motoblur?) Is there a stock rooted rom with all the radio updates and security stuff thats the latest version?
The only other android phone I had was a sprint HTC EVO. That phone it seemed would always have a stock rooted ROM based on the newest updates. Is that the case with the RAZR M?
Thanks for the help and any info that can be provided guys.

Yeah, take the update, you'll probably need stock recovery to do it, and then re-root or you can just flash one of these: http://batakang.com/ftp/?dir=devs/mhous33/XT907 . The first zip can be flashed in recovery and the other is for RSD. You'll need to root these too, but that's easy enough if you're unlocked.
Okay I have safe strap recovery 4.33 or something like that. Where can I download the stock recovery?
I seem to remember clockwork was able to hot swap recoveries. Would that be a good method for swapping to stock then back to safe strap?
Also, do I just download the OTA in zip form? If so, where can I find it at?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks to everyone helping me with this.

Yeah, I haven't found a stock recovery.img that's flashable. Just flash the stock recovery.img in fastboot, exactly the same way you loaded up TWRP.
I took the ota with twrp installed and unlocked BL. It flashed and at the end twrp asked if I wanted to fix root, I selected yes and kept root. I was wary in doing it by reading the forums, afraid I was going to lose root, but it stayed. I'm now using stock ROM with arrrgh kernel and seeder. Its running extremely smooth.

I was cleaning up & deleted it. Fixed.
Where can I find arrggh kernal and seeder?
Okay so because of a previous response on this thread, I took the OTA. I had TWRP, root, and unlocked BL.
After the update, TWRP appears to be gone along with safestrap. I think my bootloader is still unlocked but I'm not sure how to tell.
Can someone please tell me how to get root back and how to get my customer recovery back? I am having such a hard time with this phone getting it to work properly. I remember with my EVO I had it down to a science but I've forgotten a lot of steps and many things have changed since then.
I need like a noob guide I think lol.
To reiterate, got latest OTA. My bootloader is still unlocked as far as I know. Need root and custom recovery back. Thanks XDA.
Next is flashing the arggh kernal and seeder I guess. First things first though.
Should have used voodoo. Now just fastboot cwmr img & flash UPDATESU both on my goodies page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327340
You can extract the img out of the zip.

That's exactly the issue. If your device status is listed as modified, then Kies will not work. You basically forfeit your option to update through that program. I think unrooting would help, or just wait and flash the new 4.3 ROM that will be available soon.

If you want to restore back to stock and remove the custom recovery you should use Odin. That should let you get the ota firmware upgrade.

When you flash the stock firmware with odin it'll put the stock recovery back on at the time. You don't have to do anything special.

Is there any easy way to tell without being able to boot fully? There isn't anything immediately obvious on google. I'm trying to help out a friend, his phone doesn't get past the boot animation anymore and he doesn't know which version he has. I can boot into download/recovery modes but don't see anything that screams MF3, MK2 or any of the others.
Updates: I can get to sideload but don't know if I can install any Roms through sideload without a custom recovery. The recovery right now is stock 3e I think.
