I rooted my phone and install a custome rom but today I tried to flash back my original rom I backup and tried to update my phone through kies and it says my firmware can't update due to a change in my firmware. My phone is still rooted and I still have a custome recovery install. Is that causing the problem? Sorry I'm new to all this. Thanks.

That's exactly the issue. If your device status is listed as modified, then Kies will not work. You basically forfeit your option to update through that program. I think unrooting would help, or just wait and flash the new 4.3 ROM that will be available soon.
This should have been posted in q&a. It would be helpful to know what specific phone you have. You say you've flashed back to the stock Rom but you still have a custom recovery? How did you flash back to stock?

I have a Samsung galaxy s4 Im377. What I did was, I used twrp to restore back my original firmware I don't think that will restore back Odin back to my phone.

If you want to restore back to stock and remove the custom recovery you should use Odin. That should let you get the ota firmware upgrade.
So I have to use Odin to put back my original firmware? Also I'm not to sure how to put back Odin to stock recovery.

When you flash the stock firmware with odin it'll put the stock recovery back on at the time. You don't have to do anything special.

You don't flash the backup with odin. Get the stock firmware from sammobile.com for your specific device and carrier.
So I would download Odin to my pc than download and install the original firmware with odin? Do you have a step by step on flashing with odin? Thanks!

The attached guide is not for the i337 but the process is the same. Just don't use any linked files, except for Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924

Won't work if you have a custom recovery. You'd have to wait for a modified update than you can flash.

Since you are already running a custom rom you can just flash an MDL based rom. However, you will not have the MDL modem/firmware. If you want this either get your phone back to factory stock via Odin or if you can restore a nandroid and stock recovery (whatever it takes to flash the OTA update) then you can get to the MDL stock rom with MDL modem/firmware. From what I have read most have to Odin back to stock but a few have said with stock recovery and no app changes the OTA flashed successfully. Personally I would just use Odin, take the update, root/custom recovery, and be done with it. Your choice.
**EDIT....can now flash the modems separately without having to use the OTA procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919
I am kind of in the same boat. I have stock rom but I rooted it and installed custom recovery. I can't seem to find any of the flashable modded OTA updates. Can some one point me to them?

Hi again,
I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could get my hands on the stock recovery file for the Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505? I need it soon, unless flashing the stock firmware would reset the recovery to stock recovery.
I'm currently using CWM recovery.

Hi,
Look HERE
Look for the one that matches your current firmware.
OK well thanks for the link but my phone is ZHUAME1. Does that matter or can I use any stock recovery file?

Hi,
I know.
I was just suggesting that you ask in that thread if the firmware will replace your custom recovery.

So, my S4 wont read my simcard anymore, and I have to send it back.
What do I need to do to make sure that Samsung accepts and replaces my device.
It's Rooted, has a custom recovery and ROM.
Thanks.
EDIT: Its a Canadian S4.
Remove flash back via Odin find stock factory image for YOUR DEVICE (I337m) I take it you didn't update it so find the Odin files that correspond with the fw that your phone officially came with

So I went back to the Official Samsung firmware, and used triangle away. Now when I boot into download, both say official. However, when I check device status, it still says custom.
I have removed Root and have a custom recovery installed. Found a Sprint S4 recovery, but I can't find the Canadian. Will the sprint one work?
Only other method I could think of is using Kies (if you don't have it downloaded it) to restore it completely.

See, I cannot go back to stock and do the triangle away method as SIM card is required to activate the phone, which currently won't read a simcard. Can I not just flash the recovery? Or is there a way to bypass simcard activation? Thanks
I want to update my i9505 to the latest android 4.3 through Odin but I don't want the new Knox bootloader, could someone please give me any instructions of how I could achieve this? I don't want to install the "custom" stock roms.
*EDIT*: Could someone also give me instructions on how to compile the edited firmware.
I tried to Google it but to no avail.
I shall be grateful to anyone who helps.

In order to remain on your old bootloader you will need to root. Any reason why you don't want to? Root, install a custom recovery then flash the pre rooted rom. They are stock based.

Thank you for your reply, I'm rooted with custom recovery. However I wish to create myself a Odin copy for emergency purposes, I currently have the official MGA firmware update for Odin. I want to create a Odin flash-able firmware update without the new bootloader,
EDIT: After going through the thread all the firmware files include the new know bootloader ;(
As far as I know you can't flash via odin. I suggest you flash the CWM version this has no bootloader. As your already rooted using the knox free cwm version is the safest bet at the moment.

No modem, you can install that separately via Odin as we can't flash modems using CWM. It contains stock rom and stock kernel.

probably because it hasnt been updaed in GooManager to support the L720T.
I believe there is a TAR file that you can flasg via ODIN. Philz has a great recovery that works and is based on CWM.

You can use any s4 rom I believe, but you will lose the Spark function of the T model if the rom doesn't support it.
Main thing, have a good Nandroid of your working touchwiz system, flash new rom, if you boot loop, nandroid back to your working system.
Before you install a ROM and after making a nandroid. Restore it to make sure it backed up correctly.

Make a note of your firmware and baseband as you may need to reflash to the correct firmware in order to have the best experience. I'm still on MK5. I have decided to be patient and wait. The spark is very noticeable compared to my s3 (i had).
