Swollen battery- 2nd archos device fails just after warranty expires - Gen8 General

Last time my Archos 70 tablet quit charging, Archos wanted $137 to fix it. This time on my G9 250GB, the battery has swollen to the point it looks like a capri sun juice pouch and has completely split open the casing. Warranty erxpired two months ago. archos wants $77 to fix.
At this point, I am convinced that ARchos is one of the worst tech manufacturers, always using cheap components and refusingto acknowledge shoddy workmanship. Is there any other way to replace the battery? I cannot stomach throwing more money at this garbage company.. As it is I have paid over $400 for archos products and have none functioning to show for it.

2 Batteries for Kaiser

AT&T lemon-law'd my Tilt (3 qualified warranty repairs means a free upgrade to a Fuze!) and I've got two Kaiser batteries I won't be needing ever again. I'll trade 'em for anything anyone in the forum thinks is a fair deal. I know used batteries are a crapshoot, so I don't expect much, you can just have them for whatever everyone else thinks is fair.
The batteries:
1 - Stock Kaiser battery that came with the phone. DynaPack KAIS160 1350 mAh standard battery. Will fit behind standard battery cover. Got it in December 2007, still lasts a full day with Bluetooth on and very moderate internet use. I usually get a few hours of video with it, so it's still a good battery.
2 - Cameron Sino battery. CS-TP4550XL 1600 mAh standard sized battery. Will fit behind standard battery cover. Lasts a full day under same usage conditions, also good for a few hours of video. Bought in September 2008 for a business trip, used about 50% of the time the last few months switching with the other battery.
Also available for anyone who wants it, since I'm only sending AT&T the phone back:
Battery cover
A stylus or two
Anything in the original retail box (including the box itself), if you really want it.
I'll entertain any offer, regardless of how stupid. Obviously, I'd prefer money towards the purchase of a new spare battery for the Fuze/Touch Pro, but I'll take whatever anyone else thinks is fair. I have no expectations. If you're unsure to trust, but are a prominent member of the forum, you can have the batteries first and pay me later after evaluating them.
Anyone have questions about the "lemon" clause of the warranty? This one surprised me and was my Christmas present from AT&T.
send 'em my way and I'll see if they're good. I'll send you some random stuff (I've got a ton of random stuff from car shows, trade shows, etc.. ) in return if they're good to go. If I think they suck, I'll send 'em back and STILL include some random stuff
don't trust me? google my screen name.. I'm not hard to find.
Since no one else seems interested in what amounts to two free batteries, I guess they're all yours. What's the cheapest way to ship?
To 22079, possibly USPS? I'll be sure to return as much to you to make like shipping costs. Hit me up on email at [email protected]
if the offer is still good i'd like a free batter or a stylus or two?
also i'm interested in how you got your replacement fones. I want to get mine replaced(im still under att manufacturer's warranty). What is the best excuse?
My fone has been acting sluggish, calls have been fading in and out, but they keep telling me its the network and not the phone.

[INFO] Bent bezel after short fall ...

Be careful with your transformer.. mine fell about 2.5 ft off a desk onto my office carpet after I bumped my power cord (had to sit it on the edge due to the short length of the power cord) and landed right on the power button the only spot on the whole bezel damaged, pushing it in and denting the bezel right at the button forcing the power button down.
Now my tablet won't charge with the button pushed in . and i have to pop the button out each time i want to take it out of or put it in sleep or charge it.
Gonna have to find a bezel to replace this one with and a new button to replace also...
Not blaming Asus, its my fault completely, Just a warning to everyone else that the bezel dents pretty easy....
Hi, not sure where you are located but if you are in the us or canada, ncix here show the warranty of asus (it is in bold) for notebook, etc (i guess it should be this one or close to it for the tablet...) :
Accidents Happen
You have extra protection when they happen to your ASUS notebook purchased in the US or Canada. ASUS will fix it or replace it for you at no charge during the first year after purchase in the event of damage from accidental spills, drops, electrical surges, or fire.
Warranty covering accidental drops, spills, power surges, and fire damage
Target 3 business day turnaround time for repair / replacement; not including receiving and shipping time
One-way shipping (from ASUS to the user) at no additional cost
24/7 toll-free phone support
One incident covered per notebook
So you could try with asus directly...
That damn cord is going to be the death of many tablets. What the hell were they thinking? My extension can't come fast enough, I've already almost had it yanked from my hands by picking it up while charging and forgetting the cord is so damn short.

It's not the first place I've seen someone mention that's their policy, but I can't find the link offhand as to the actual statement . Would love one for the peace of mind! I found the link for notebooks, but not sure if they cover the tablets under that policy.
I hope you're right and I'm missing it, but reading the warranty card enclosed with my Transformer says it excludes accidental damage. It is great that they offer this protection on notebooks, which I will keep in mind when shopping for a new unit.

Show all assus warranties (batteries, etc) and the notebook one is in a big black square.... Sad it's not for the tablet tough, still, may worth a try with asus directly...
no pix atm .... and oh well thanks for trying....im going,to call and beg for a bezel

Amazon Review
Anyone else have this issue? I don't have the item yet but after hearing this and reading this on an Amazon review (From a guy who otherwise reviewed the item very favorably before it happened) I'm at least a little bit concerned.
"Update:
So there are some build quality issues, the bezel around the edge pops out very easily. I am 6'4" so I have big hands and I pop it out just holding the things at times. During one of those pop outs I broke the power button somehow and have to send it back for repair, hopefully under warranty. Its a real shame too since it unit feels pretty solid otherwise. And ASUS customer support is a very bad experience. "

Sounds like that guys the Hulk or something. Can't see that happening... ever... with a normal grip, unless you twisted the whole pad to the extreme. Either that or his pad was faulty in the first place of course.

Funny. I am 6'4" 220 and my big hands are no problem for the excellent build quality of the TF101.

Thats funny, I've like 3 chinese tablets (ePad, herotab, no name 7") with crap build quality and none of them seem to just fall apart like that in my hand. This guy is definitely the Hulk and he sounds pretty angry.

On the bottom right corner of mine the backing isn't in "snug". It doesn't meet flush with the bezel and I can push it in and it comes back out repeatedly. It's kind of annoying because that's also where you hold it. It kind of makes the product feel "cheapy". However everything else on the tablet is great (speakers/screen/etc) so I'm debating whether I want to make a stink about it or just live with it.

I dropped mine from about 2 feet, and the bezel bent on the corner where the power button is. Now it's stubborn trying to turn the damn thing on. I called ASUS to see if they could send me a replacement bezel and was told they weren't taking in cosmetic damage issues. I told them it wasn't just cosmetic and was just brushed off.
Hopefully after a few months I can get my damn tablet fixed when sales are down.

The buttons are integrated with the bezel, if you get a replacement Bezel, the buttons get included from what I can tell.

thanks.. that would definitely make things easier....
I think it is asus fault
I think asus really is to blame on the short power cord...it's too short where one cannot even place safely on a desk to charge safely. While plugged in, I have to leave it at the edge of my desk making prone to falling off by accident. It already happened to me and I would love to even buy a longer cord. I'll pay for it...just make it available.
Second, the bezel is extremely soft. I got a few nicks already and I don't even remember anything hard touching it besides the desk and carpet. Since this is not an ipad, accessories are rare.

Dead Battery ???

Help me understand something here. I've had several phones that use Lithium battery technology (same as this Asus). I've had batteries that will no longer hold a charge and have had to replace them. So what is the point of spending $500 on a device that you can't replace the battery if it goes bad?
If it goes bad while under warranty, you have to send it in, and that is a big hassle. And if the battery goes bad out of warranty...do you just toss it in the trash? Or use it as an expensive paper weight?
I'm sure if you were technically inclined you could open your TF up and replace it yourself. People have been doing that with all the apple stuff.
Has anyone had the back off of one of these Asus tablets, and seen whether or not the battery can easily be replaced (if available) ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109928
This is the only thing I've seen with someone dissassembling the Transformer. Maybe he could help.
search. there is teardown info in several posts.
Every apple "i" product has a non user replaceable battery yet many people ( myself included) have replaced them.

Planning to buy 6P from Craigslist, How to make sure I'm not getting a faulty one?

I've read about the faulty battery issue, and sudden reboots/bootloop issue.
Is there a way to minimize the risk, if I can check the device physically?
Checking the manufacturing date? Checking how many hours are left under "battery" in settings?
Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks!
Don't buy this phone. There are so many issues with this thing. My network signals all of a sign went kaput (the network chip got fried go figure!). No I'm stuck with a giant iPod. Save your money and buy something else (serious advice).
I agree, don't buy this phone used. You have no way to test the battery and other issues might appear.
My phone is a year old and I have already gotten a couple of sudden shutdowns. In addition people often complain that they can't hear me and my voice is intermittently muffled.
i wouldn't recommend getting this phone used, especially this late in the game... you can't just ignore all the issues being posted
I stumbled across this because I am buying a used 64gb 6p on eBay right now (7- 22- 2018). My research shows that if one comes across a survivor of the bootloop death (which can be overcome by disabling the 4 large cores, why bother) AND one is willing to eventually buy a $15 battery kit and can use a heat gun effectively, the Nexus 6p is THE best phone right now for no more than $150. The 128gb can be had for $180. If one buys one manufactured later than 2/2016, the battery lasts longer and supposedly some other minor bugs were fixed.
For $150 even if you only get one year from it I believe it's worth it. Phones now are so expensive unless your signing your life away on a plan.
Battery problems, heat and lag issues. Can't wait to upgrade to Pixel 3 or anything else. I wouldn't recommend spending money on this peace of ... I loved the phone when it worked as supposed to, but now it just don't. Oh, and microphone problems when using speakerphone are also common.
I bought mine on ebay 64 gb for 150, it had a bad battery so i got them to refund $50. i paid like $15 to fix it been working absaloutey fine for 5 months so far. No lag at all for me or random reboots, all my cores work, signal works fine, and so do calls . I dont really know how it is on stock i have been on abc rom and franco kernel the whole time and loving the phone
This might be irrelevant to OP but here's my 2 cents
I bought one (exterior is almost mint) a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. I got it for $100 (from a guy that badly needed some money to go on holiday ) and honestly, I would say it's comparable to new mid range $300+ phones, even surpassing them in some regards - camera, software support, build quality, design, "feel". I'm not even sure why I bought it, since my trusty Z2 is still holding on, I guess I couldn't resist that price.
I knew what I was getting into, I read about all the problems beforehand, but I figured if it didn't get the bootloop till now, it probably won't. Also, I ordered a new battery off Aliexpress the day I got the phone. Screen On time used to be 2-3 hrs with random shutdown at 15-5%, now after replacement I'm getting ~5 hrs. Great success.
So for the 3 people out there looking to buy this phone, you can expect:
-bad battery life and random shutdown (just get a new one, they're dirt cheap)
-minor burn-in of the navbar (I notice it on white backgrounds only)
-getting warm after using it a while BUT it's a lot better after replacing the battery
-yellowish tint of the screen (I notice it since I'm coming from a cold LCD)
+camera performance comparable to flagships, especially with the Pixel camera app
+sexy design
+great build quality
+smooth overall
+very potent double speakers
+VERY fast charging with the original charger
I bought a used 128gb from a "refurbish" mill for $150 on eBay. It went dead after 2 days. Total battery/system failure and no joy with the charger. I got a free return shipping label and a full refund.
The same day I resolved to buy from an individual who can answer questions. If the seller couldn't tell me the manufacture date they were dropped from the watchlist. My research seemed to indicate that units made after 2/2016 were the ones to get.
I bought a 64gb made in 10/2016 from a guy on eBay for $100. It's in better than near mint condition. Google announced the end of the Nexus brand the same month so this has to be one of the last made. Everything is perfect (including Oreo 8.1) except that AccuBattery reports 60% battery health. I concur with all that skullzhunter said.
I already planned to change the battery, but 60% health will buy me some time before I have to track down a heatgun. The battery kits are cheap and contain all the special tools for the job.
I'd like to hear from skullzhunter what the date of manufacture is on his phone (for others, boot into recovery and select "barcodes"). Also, were you able to remove the top and bottom covers intact? I imagine the trick is to apply enough heat. The question is, how much heat is TOO much? Any tips on re-installing those little covers with future access in mind?

Interesting trick with the Barcodes, seems my phone was manufactured in November 2015.
The operation was more difficult than I expected, but I managed to remove the covers with minor marks. You have to be VERY patient and careful, and you don't necessarily need a heat gun, a hair dryer will do. I don't think you can apply too much heat really, the frame will quickly get much hotter than the glass/plastic pieces but it cools down just as quick. Just heat it up until you can't touch the aluminium, there's nothing you can damage.
A trick that I unfortunately discovered after putting everything back together would be to use a sticker/vinyl skin to lift the covers from the corners (after heating), instead of digging in the gaps - as there are no gaps really.
So other than a hair dryer, you will need a 1.5 philips screwdriver, some thin plastic pieces to keep the screen assembly from snapping back into the case when you pry it open, and most importantly the thinnest strongest piece of metal you can find.
I used some tiny 3M double sided sticky strips to stick the pieces back and kept some of the old glue as well, I removed the gunky parts only. I think there are different glues used for top and bottom, the one on top being easier to reuse, but the bottom piece kinda sinks in the hole, so you need to leave just a little bit and press really hard so it snaps into place. I think it will be 10x easier to remove them now if I ever need to.

PSA:Battery replacement

Well, i tried to replace the battery of this device because i was getting around 3 hours of SOT. Got a battery.
All fine, opened up the backcover, removed some scrws. Some of they were very tight and then got to the last one. Bottom right, near the battery connector.
Not sure if it was on purpose or not, but my T3 torx screwdriver couldnt budge it. The screw is destroyed now and i have no way to remove the backcover to replace the battery.
For a flagship, they used screws that can be deformed by a nailcutter. This is absolutely disgusting.
There is no way to remove the backcover without destroying it in the process.
Now i only wonder why they made the cover with 20+ screws. Was this on purpose to over any would be fixer?
Another laptop i owned from lenovo had a stuck screw for the cpu. So there was no way to put thermal cooling paste for it.
The screw in the lenovo laptop was also destroyed in the process.
On the otherhand, my samsung laptop is still going and its from 2011.
Let this be a warning. If they had used plastic for the screws, it would have been better because at least i wouldnt need mote expensive machinery to drill them.
Unfortunately, Motorola decided to use t4 (even t2) screws in some models, which might have been your case. I used a magnifying glass to make sure the screw driver fit perfectly before turning so it didn't strip them. Took about 2 hours with heavy patience and rewatching multiple YouTube how-to's from different view points. I actually broke the black plastic that covers the Qi charging coil but thankfully that isn't a crucial part.
I bend the frame and just the replaced the battery. Luckily nothing got damaged.
Gotta test now the new battery. If it works out, at least it will spare me 400+ euros for a new phone.
But seriously, the screws are ****. I removed some of them.
I am exceptinally lucky only one got stuck in the roght place so that i could bend the frame and replace it.
Advice foreveryone, becareful for the ribbon cables. Yhey are flimsy and can be damaged extremely easily.
This phone is worth the repair and time because there isnt much out there that really competes with its screensize and performance, and hope the battery repair can help this thing last a while longer. Maybe 1-2 years
Except for flagships, every midranger i have seen is inferior and you wont get a decent 6 inch phone for under $500.-
that's why I took it to the local shop to have a pro do the job, plenty of people have reported breaking things then putting it back together and the phone wont boot or stuff doesn't work
it looks easy on the video tutorials until you **** up [emoji4]

Well, i bought the battery off of amazon and its not available to buy anymore.
And the phone was dying at 15%>
Now with the replaced battery, i am getting 5-6 hours of SOT.
Its basically a new phone.
Does anyone know the dimensions thread of the screw? I'd buy some with a different head. My chinese screwdriver is very bad and unusable and screw too.
Maybe M1.4 x 3mm?
Thanks.
I am sure 99% that the screws are M1.4 x 2mm.
I ordered this, hope it will be OK.

Just my opinion but I felt it was worthwhile to pay $75 for a "professional" to swap mine out. They did not make the battery easy to replace, used crap screws, etc. The vast majority of folks would be better off going this route if its avail.

m8 the battery is like 13-18 bucks with tools, you just need to follow typical precautions. If I had 75 bucks I would've sold it long ago and bought a used first gen pixel or essential phone

I know that I could have replaced the battery for a $20 bill. Could have. Could have also screwed it up. Very easily screwed it up. I'm not sure where you could buy a first gen pixel for $75 or less. If you can do that, I'd say you ought to do whatever you can to scrape up the money. As far as the Essential, that's for the birds ain't it?
EDIT: Yeah, the Essential was definitely for the birds. It's sales have been so slow and sluggish that the next model has been cancelled. Whether at the $699 original price or even with the 200 or so discount that eventually came about, I get the impression it was overpriced. In my case, a Nexus 6 with fresh battery for $75 >>>>> New Essential at $500+. I still don't believe in $75 Pixels either and would love to be proven wrong. I am right or someone is withholding a massive bargain from XDA folks.
