Xperia Z on seawater - Xperia Z General

Hi all! summer is almost there and i was thinking... can i immerse my phone on seawater like in normal tap water?

It is not recommended.
I heard that the seals will weak because of the salt.I tried yesterday when I fall off from my jet ski.
Nothing happened.
Only immersed the phone in clean water after.
I made a picture tho.

Nice picture
I personally would probably use it in the sea but not submerged and then just rise with bottled water/tap water to remove any chance of corrosion ect.

Exactly, sea water will not cause any damage right away but if the devices is not rinsed with tap water afterwards it can cause damage to the plastic seals.

ok, so still safe to use at sea right? then quickly rinsed it with the tap water...thank you

Be aware that you can scratch it very easy because of the sand that is in the sea.

Read the manual and the advisory that came with the phone. It has a very specific advisory about salt water.

Those are common English terms. Both of them are different and I don't remember Sony stating anywhere that XZ is a water proof phone.
Not always whatever stated in Wikipedia is right. Check this out.

No, please, don't put it in seawater
but in the swimming pool, maybe, I just took a lot of videos with it

Really? PLEASE read the manual, understand it and use the XZ in accordance with Sony's instructions. English lit' 101.
I was going to explain the device and write a long reply but if you cant understand the manual what's the point?

It is a waterproof phone but with many limits:
1m50 and 30minutes maximum
No hot water
No sea water
etc...

A perfect explanation of WATER RESISTANCE as apposed to water proof.
Take a good look at your Rolex divers watch. Can you find the term water proof? For sure not, it will read "Water resistant to xxx atms".
Why do we have this debate thread after thread? Ones canon DSLR camera is NOT water proof if one requires such a camera one purchases the appropriate camera for that task. WHY would any sane person take a mobile into a swimming pool? The XZ is a mobile phone not a camera. If one desires underwater photograph's buy the appropriate equipment. I just believe this has to be written thread after thread after thread...

woot... i hv submerge mine into waterfall, its still ok.. eh.. but its not saltwater ..

water sports: secure it a bit more:
got gelaskin scraps I cut in bands and stick from pins to volume rocker
charging pins > micro sd 6cm
headphones > volume rocker 12cm
+speaker if you want
standard adhesive tape should also do the job without leaving residue when unsticking
quick to do so think about it. will prevent the flaps from opening/water from touching the joints
No case bc it tends to retain water
you can also moisture the joints with special silicon grease.
an armband can also secure a bit
the phone fits in otterbox 200 case
these 2 ways are not convenient when you have to film/take pics
so
+ "maxpedition gear retractor" attached to bag / board shorts one side and looped to "DEFF finger ring" (fantastic multi purpose product fo the z ill have to review) attached to Z lanyard hole
+ tape
extreme: lanyards lost thread

Gorilla Glass My Arse

Dropped my phone about 3 ft face first onto the floor and screen is cracked from the bottom right corner to about half way.
Anyone know where I can get a really good TPU case that is pretty thin?
Amazon always seems to have the best prices for cases. And has a lot to choose from.

Topic on this already...
1. It's a scratch resistant, not drop proof.
2. Laws of physics. The center of gravity is focused on the front for these phones since they're so light and thin. Yes it's more likely to fall on it's front like a bowling ball on a stick thrown up.
3. Counter balance this with a case in the back.
4. Sucks to be you.
5. Use the search button next time.

While these guys are being harsh, there is some truth.
gorilla glass is meant to be excellent against scratches, not breaking. That it cracked is not one of its features.
It sucks, but hopefully you can find a place to repair it. Would be interesting to know what a new screen would cost.

Look on eBay then
If you want something that is fall resistant buy a Nokia Lumia when having one of those things you should worry about your feet that your phone. Of course Samsung S3 is a delicate creature that has to be tendered with great care. There many fall resistant cases but to be honest the best protection is safety. I don't see how anyone would like to have a bulk that is twice the normal phone. A normal barely there casemate and a screen protector would do well for everyday usage. Thought there was another from case mate again that included a hell lot of protection. It had two parts, one rubber and the other a normal tough case but really that made the phone look like a satellite phone.
Alright sorry I thought it was break proof according to the video it looked like it. Also, it's not a big deal I still have 14 days to get warranty it was my fault and I can admit it, no need to be so rude about how it's my fault.
As for videos, I don't read much into them because those are mostly staged and does not reflect what really happens.
I remember watching a Gorilla Glass 2 video on youtube showing no scratches on one of the new Sony phones; I just laughed because they person was scratching with razor blades and hitting with a hammer; showing no damage. The only problem with that is the camera does not pick up the micro scratches which one can see with the eye (which the user shows it with no scratches in the video). Eventually the video poster did crack the glass after repeatedly hitting with a hammer.
There was also another video of the same phone being dropped in a big puddle of water and also it being ran over with a jeep...! Perfectly intact ha ha!
I have the flip cover and I drop my phone about 4 feet got a little scratch on the back 'maybe I'm lucky? but I think it was my case?

Blurry photos? Quick lens polishing guide!

I saw this thread for another phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732200 and decided to give it a shot myself.
After a spending a whole summer in a gorgeous mountain camp, my poor G2 was taking very blurry photos with lots of light blooming.

I used the following items:
Q-Tips (or your preferred brand of cotton swab)
Pepsodent Regular Toothpaste
Rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol
3x5 card (not strictly necessary)
WARNINGS:
Too much alcohol or toothpaste could leak into the camera/phone.
This removes the purple lens coating. I wouldn't do this to a new camera, but mine was already taking bad photos, so this is an improvement.
Do this at your own risk!
I took a Q-Tip moistened (not dripping) with rubbing alcohol and cleaned the lens. (True, it's not really the lens, but the plate protecting the lens.) I then put a tiny daub of toothpaste on the paper card and touched the tip of the moistened Q-Tip to the edge of the toothpaste. This put a tiny, tiny amount of toothpaste in the cotton. I wanted just enough to get some grains of abrasive embedded in the cotton, not enough to make visible smears of toothpaste.
I then took the loaded Q-Tip and firmly but carefully rubbed the lens for 10 seconds or so. I then wiped it off with a clean Q-Tip with alcohol, dried, and examined it. There were still a lot of mottled scratches, so I repeated the process several times until the lens was clear. There was still some purple coating around the edges, but the center was clear. Then I took another test photo:
Much better.

it worked for me!
My phone appears to have a fingerprint on the inside of the inside of the cover, I only noticed it after the phone went back to HTC for a warranty repair. I may double check that it isn't on the outside.
Unfortunately, the sky was a bit overcast. (The old photos were taking in brilliant sunlight.) Grr...XDA won't let me post links to photos. The photo names indicate whether they were before or after.
I think I may need to polish the bottom of the lens more. There seems to be some odd flaring down there.

For the one's without warranty, it's just 3 torx screws to take of back and pop the glas out. Then you can clean out dust to.

{DISCUSSION}Xperia Z back glass coming unglued

So I've had my Xperia Z for about 2 months now and it has endured water tests, and stress test (software wise). I'm completely satisfied with the results. However I was cleaning my phone with my microfiber cloth and noticed something odd when cleaning. As I look up at the top left of the device I see that there is a slight bulge or lift of the device I am wondering if this was after my long photography session I did with it as it heated up quite a bit and the Snapdragon S4 is around the same area. I'd like to know if anyone came across this lift / bulge and had any issues with it / got it back down because the uneven-ness bothers me mentally, I have still washed my phone however haven't fully submerged it since I've noticed bulge. I'll post some pictures on what I'm talking about, I figured someone here can help me out with this for I won't be close to a Sony Service Center to have a look at my device until July.

Your backplate is definitely loose. If I were you, I wouldn't submerge it anymore because I think it isn't waterproof anymore. Looks like the glue melted while you were heavy using your Z and caused the backplate to lift. You should definitely bring your device in for repair or replacement.
Try heat it up again at that point e.g. with an hairdryer and then press it for a time while it cools down again. Maybe it works.

You must have to close all your ports and flips for avoiding water getting in..
Even If you had closed your ports Still be aware..!! Bcoz it is not enough.. There are much more changes of getting water in through the gaps between Cam, sound and lock key..
Z1 got IP 55 and IP 58 certification.. But certification says It is Just a "Water-Resistance"..
I think Sony don't know the difference between "Waterproof" and "Water-Resistance"
In short Sony is cheating us..!!

i bet your ports were not closed properly or your phone was faulty, because i went for swimming with my z1 for almost an hour and no issues.
many people have fun at dipping their portable hot in cold water ( highly unadviced ) ... of same if your phone is well fell, you can forgotten the waterproofing... and sony unadviced the chemical products, chlore in pool, same for salt... the better it's of the wipe after with of the soft water... But I have changed my ecran, after broken, and no issue with water...
Envoyé de mon C6903 en utilisant Tapatalk
No trolling, I had mine four hours (brand new out of the sealing ) and gently putted it into 20 cm of normal water. Maybe 1 minute because I was filming it. So I know the ports where shut tight because I filmed those parts with extra care and it wasn't dropped.
Well, dead after 2 minutes.
Turned out the sealing of the headphone jack was not there or the seal wasn't good installed. Press phone in your mouth and try to blow into the headphone jack. Shouldn't be possible.
About the warranty. A big mouth and a "f**** you, it's waterproof morron" mentality works. After a lot of idiots (at the service centre) whining about warranty and waterproof I got a brand new one. They had to, I filmed it
I cannot do this without swearing, but we don't need these topics, be aware, be aware, we are aware. No one will put his phone in the water with everything open + my Z1 was in the rivers, lakes and nothing.

As Sony is advertising "Z1 is waterproof smartphone.." But actually it is not..!!

So be aware Guyz..
Thanks & Regards.

And tell me the difference?
Water proof and water resistant is the same, but people uses the term water resistant, when they mean SPLASH water resistant.
The Z1 has 2 ratings for it's water protection:
IPX5 > Resistance against low pressure water jets
IPX8 > Resistance against immersion in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
What Sony doesn't inform, and I think they should, is the the phone can be under water, but you should avoid any abrupt movement underwater, or doing thinks like jumping in the pool with your phone, the water force in those situations is massive, and our phone isn't protected against high pressure water.
We also should mind those water jets (from the pool pump filter), or even tap or hoses with high pressure.
With that in mind, and keeping the sealing in the covers clean, your phone should be fine when taking a bath.
Mine survived water slides, tubing, and swimming. Had it in my shorts cargo pocket whole time I was not taking pics with it.
So be aware the phone works as designed.

My phone is waterproof. I dropped it in the baby's bath by mistake and it was fine. Also I've used it all over winter whilst cycling with no protection.
I don't find any purpose of this thread. One should know under what circumstances phone stays waterproof. Thread closed

water resistance actuality

So I'm on vacation with my family and have a Verizon nexus 6. I waned to further test the usability of the phone in water. I have seen the video where it was submerged and was convinced it was good to go for the most part. I decided to record some video about 2in submerged. It did it great and worked so i kept going and tried some more. Never had it deeper than about 6in. After about 3videos the proximity sensor changed to a red light pretty much then it faded away. The next malfunction was the signal dropped and then the phone shut off and it was basically in a boot loop going from Google boot animation and continuing to loop. After about 30 min of that the screen started to go fully white then black for another 30 Min. Then it died and is not coming on. So basically do not purposely submerge your n6. Just wanted i share my experience with the community. For those wondering. I have a new one coming Monday after the $150 deductible.
Also prior to doing this i had used the phone in the shower 3 times with no problems getting it wet.
So don't submerge a phone in water that isn't rated as waterproof?
Why? Just why would you even attempt this??

Um, WTF were you doing with your phone in the shower ... Never mind, don't think we want to know
That's like saying "when I drove my Subaru into the wall it no longer runs" or "While moving my piano from the 5th floor it dropped and broke." "When I touched the 400 Volt power line it shocked me."
PS:
Water resistance means it resists water, not that it is water proof. It is more likely to survive a splash or two but is not designed to be submerged. Think old Casio watches that you could wash your hands with while wearing but going to the pool would have been a mistake.
I find this rather interesting and commend you for your bravery. couldnt/wouldn't have done this myself but interesting none the less lol

Bravery? That's not the word that comes to mind for this attention seeking stunt.

Cause.....water
Thanks for confirming that our phone isn't waterproof, I'm sure there's an extremely small minority of owners that don't already know this.
Thanks for confirming dude
OP, are you too rich ? looking ways to burn money?
This is pretty funny lol.
I personally wouldn't test the limits of water resistance, but that's just me.
I didn't even know nexus 6 advertised water resistance, I knew it had no wasn't water proof certification though.

Water resistant, yes, water proof, no.
Water resistant is splash proof, which is no where near submersible. Jeez some people are odd.
OP, appreciated the attempt but if you decide to purposefully destroy another phone maybe next time do a series of water exposures with each slightly higher than the last. This might give the rest of us a better idea of how strong the water resistance really is.

I think its funny so many of you give a **** what he does with his phone. who cares, if he wants to throw it in the toilet and piss all over it and pull it back out and use it that's his decision.. I would like to know what the limitations of the phone are as far as water goes, so yeah dunking a 600$ device in water isn't something I have balls enough to do but of someone else is willing to hey I will definitely watch
