Video player not working (stock, purple icon) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Stock rom, stock everything, not rooted or any kernals. Don't know a thing about hacking Android devices (soon to change!)
Stock video player doesn't work? It worked flawlessly before, now it goes from a white screen to black screen to homescreen with a message "Unfortunately, Video has stopped."
I have disabled some stuff in the App Manager but nothing that seems to be linked to the stock video player? Anyone else with the same problem?

In system settings, apps find the player and clear it's cache.

Cleared in both the app (1.47mb file) and video player (100kb file?). Still acting the same :crying:, thank you for the suggestion!
I can still access my media files by going thru the files menu, but that gets annoying after a while :cyclops:

If this started after you disabled stuff then you disabled something related. It is not uncommon, especially if you are not sure.
Reenable apps or do a reset.

Fixed..... Cloud Agent or one other thing fixed it. Thanks!

Bump anyone?!
what music app are you using? Have you attempted looking through settings to see if there's a "shake to change song" option?

I am using the built in Google music app, and no there is no option in it to turn it off.

Media scanner running...

Everytime I try to start my camera, it won't open and "media scanner running" starts. I can clear data in Media Storage and it corrects the error until I reboot my tab and it starts all over again.
I have tried everything I can think of including switching to every available ROM. The only "permanent" fix I've found is flashing the 3.1 OTA rom.
I'm hoping someone has had this problem and found a solution.

Multiple times...just found what I think has fixed the issue. Seems I had a corrupted multimedia file of some sort. I just deleted all media (pics, movies, music) and started from scratch and has worked thru 3 reboots.

After a few hours the tab rebooted itself and since then video player has been working, no idea what it fixed, but it fixed itself.

the media scanner can crash if it stumbles on a file with issues (corrupted, wrong file ending etc.)
first thing to try is to delete (backup) all the media files and see if works without them as Alleycat wrote.
teamovercome.net/p7500/?page_id=5 has a good guide at the bottom of that page for restocking. Also there seem to be a lot of problems around weird filenames, last week Kies would not even detect my Tablet until I deleted a bunch of files with strange characters.
I too had the same problem running task's slim 13. Does anyone think that this might be an android virus of some kind?
Edit: I also noticed a process called "root" running superuser permission. My screen would just flash "root has been granted superuser permission" but i would not open any kind of app. Also, when checking superuser I could see root had been granted access several times. Not sure if this is related.
EDIT: Nevermind, it appears the system just needed to scan for media and my sdcard was pretty full so it took a while.
I get that sometimes, to solve it clear cache of Video Player
Thanks
I will try this, I am still having issues with video player for v3.2

Hi,
I finally gave up on this problem and stollped the media scan from running at all - I have not noticed the difference except that the camera and video player now work. I used Rescan Media Root from the Market.
Sinnce I use QuickPic to manage media, I doubt I will suffer from the Media Scanner not operating.
Also using Slim 13.1 and the native Video Player. This issue did not occur with Dice Player, but I like the way the native player handles 5.1 sound
same problem. I am coming from AOKP. Can this be an issue when comming from an ICS ROM as the camera doesn't work there. I did a full wipe/dalvik wipe/cache wipe, why would this still be lingering? Still hasn't fixed itself and I tried the clearing cache under settings > apps. Any other ideas?
I had this when my storage was maxed out, what's the status of your free space?
Same happened to me after switching from ics to hc. The only solution is downloading Rescan media root from market and disabling the media scanner
if you are still in HC 3.2, the easiest way to fix this problem is going to task manager and kill the programs in the ram manager. worked.

Video playback stuttering.

My nexus 7 (4.1.1) stutters every 7-8 seconds during all video playback (Netflix/YouTube/local). It even occurs with WiFi turned off and playing locally stored content (Transformers movie). Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?
We had another thread going on this but it seems to buried now. You are not alone 'it's happening to me too. It is also happening on games for me too. I think it may have something to do with 4.1.1 update as others and I didn't have problem on 4.1. I am trying to flash a 4.1 ROM but am having issues at the moment doing so.

Not problems here with 4.1.1 watching Transformers end to end twice. Try doing a factory reset and retry the videos stock.
Did yu mess the build prop? Like did yu try out the tablet mode?

I also get some stuttering when I use Netflix but not on sling player nor YouTube

I made a copy of build.prop but didn't modify the original file. I'm rooted on latest build.
I had changed the density so I can have it in tablet u.i mode but I switched back I put 213... But I had remembered for some reason it was at 212 before I even changed it, but I put 213 cause everyone on xda said that's was what the original number was... Check & see if it's at 212 of not changer it to 212... It worked for me

Found a fix
Go to Settings then Developer Options and check Disable HW Overlays,
seems to solve it, not sure why.
Well from what I've researched what it tends to do is pool the system memory so I don't think it's a good idea to turn it off. When you have it turned off each program is no longer being allotted a separate amount of memory. However when I did turn it off and it seem to fix the problem I have with stuttering in games.

I don't know if this works for others but my problem turned out to be rotation control app. Had it set to auto and it still did stuttering. Uninstalled and instantly cleared the problem.

What exactly does the rotation control app do? I mostly use my N7 in Landscape mode, would uninstalling this app interfere with this? I'm getting god awful stuttering when I try to play an .mkv file streamed from my rig to my N7.... Makes the movie unwatchable. But my .mp4 movies (720p) play just fine..? I also get the tiniest amount of stuttering in Dead Trigger.
Yes, works for me too, it is there a rotation app to replace the culprits? Thanks!

Yep, it was the rotation app for me too, removed it and now it's back to "butter". Thanks!
Another satisfied customer here, removing the rotation app removed the video glitch, now I installed Apex Launcher to get the home screen in Landscape mode and it seems to be working without any glitches.
Are there any other apps with such problems? I never installed the rotation control app but I still have stuttering. Disabling HW overlays fixes it, but it sounds like that's a less-than-ideal choice. I can't think of any other app that would be causing the problem.

I hope so, though for now I disabled HW overlays - Rotation Forces Auto on Ultimate Rotation App is just too darned useful to live without. Plus it boosts the benchmark performance. Not sure about it yet, but I see no side effects with actual usage.
stutter WORKAROUND...
Hi everyone,
Instead of disabling HW Overlays... or uninstalling `Ultimate Rotation` app (which I really like!), set the given app/game to `Manual rotation` in the settings:
1) swipe out and tap the Ultimate Rotation icon
2) `Settings` (bottom right)...
3) `Per App Settings`...
4) tap the app in question...
5) choose `Manual` rotation...
6) exit... and try the game/video (stutter be gone!)
NOTE: I just noticed you can do this while the stuttering app/video is running. Just do Step 1 (as above) while your game is running (it will pause when you tap the Ultimate Rotation icon), then simply choose `Manual` rotation and you`re back in the saddle again.
hope all that made sense...
cheers!

Gallery problems

OK i have looked everywhere and tried every "solution" i have seen. hopefully XDA can help...whenever i open up my gallery and go to All tab for my pictures, there are my regular pictures there but also a whole bunch of grey boxes. when i select them i dont have the option to delete them and its driving me crazy. went to the picasa web app and deleted all my empty albums, cleared the cache from my gallery app and even tried doing it from the desktop application and they are still there. any help would be greatly appreciated. oh any btw phone is completely stock, unrooted.
This is not an ideal solution, but it's what I've done. For me, the gallery was freezing, or at least lagging for 5 or 10 seconds when I'd try to select an album.
My fix, if you can call it that, was to stop using gallery, and use something called QuickPic instead. It's basically the same thing. It also makes it very easy to exclude or include folders.
Yea I was using quickpic on my last phone and just havent installed it yet on this one. Still would like the gallery to function properly though.

Could these be pics that were deleted that gallery thinks are still there?
Have you tried a reboot? Clearing data and cache for gallery app?
What mods have you done?
Not sure what gallery thinks they are. Ive deleted everything thats unwanted in picasa but there is still a little picasa icon next to the empty albums. No mods done at all

How about some screenshots so we can see what is going on? I find that the newest ROMs based on the newest International firmware, fixes all of the gallery stutter and lag as well.

[Q] Not able to rescan media

Hey guys,
I've been searching around, but I can't find a clearcut fix, so maybe someone here has some insight. Recently I started noticing that random pictures started dissapearing from my gallery, seemingly (but not 100% sure) after the kitkat update on my Note 3. Before I also saw some pics dissapear (a couple I downloaded) but I didn't put much thought into it.
Now, after the update, I was sarting to notice more pictures have dissapeared. The thing is, if I go into whatsapp, select a convo and click on media I actually see the pictures and all, but in the gallery in the "whatsapp images", and in "all images" album they are nowhere to be found. I tried for a solution on google, but to no avail except rescanning the media. Usually that would be taking the sd card out and put it back in to rescan the card, but it refuses. The weird thing is that every app in the store that deals with rescans imediatly Force closes when starting the scan. I mean all of them, and I installed about 10. I have no cfw's or roms running so I can't figure out what the issue is.
Obviously I tried resetting, rebooting and all the usual stuffs.
ANy help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dylan

Wiped Dalvik-cache & user data.

Improvement: Zip, Zilch, Nada.
