I have had a t-mobile vario 2 for the last 5 months. when I first got the phone I was excited to get the hsdpa activated and quickly phoned up tmobile and got through to a tech guy who activated it. I didnt really notice much speed improvement and tmobile only shows the 3g and not the h for hsdpa, but I was pretty happy with my speeds of around 70kbit/sec (tested through http://text.dslreports.com/myspeed?jisok=1). I downloaded fieldtest_157 which showed that I was connected to hsdpa but the values showed through hsdpa cqi status were very low.
after the activation I started getting the dreaded freeze that only a soft reset could fix and missed loads of calls. about 1 month ago I was suddenly unable to go online whenever my phone went into 3g mode, I was only able to when it switched to gsm. I phoned tmobile to get the freeze problem fixed. they said it was a known issue with the phone and made me permenantly switch my phone to the gsm network. I was basically told that my phone does not support 3g and hangs on switching from gsm to 3g for no apparent reason and that they were working on the problem. they must have done something on their side because when I switched to phone back on to auto network switching, I got gsm and 3g connectivity and downloads but not hsdpa (checked with fieldtest_157)
next day because I was unhappy with the download speed I phoned tmobile and asked for hsdpa reactivation. the first level ignorant pleb who answered made me hang on and reactivated hsdpa. same problem cant download except on gsm switch. rephoned tmobile and got through to another 2nd level tech guy and explained all my connection problems.he said that my phone had never been hsdpa connected and connected it for me. what do you know Im suddenly getting 950kbit/sec speeds and hsdpa cqi status shows all high teens or 20's. for some reason my battery is lasting allot longer and 5 months after getting the phone Im happy. my phoned hasnt hanged yet either.
moral of the story is to download fieldtest_157 from:

and check hsdpa status because either lots of bull is being told to tmobile customers or there are some pretty stupid people working there.

After reading another post here, suggesting that a solution may be to disable HSDPA, I get almost perfect Internet access, allbeit with lower data speeds of on average 280Kbps.
Surely if HSDPA was not enabled on my SIM, then it would be how it originally was and I would just connect with UMTS at around 300Kbps, not connect with HSDPA and not be able to do anything.
But I'll phone them, again, and ask for a HSPDA reactivation anyway.
Actually, thinking about my scepticism.
I was recently in Singapore using a prepaid SIM which does not have 3G access. The phone kept connecting to the 3G signal and then reported 'no service'. Obviously after selecting GSM only everything was fine.
So perhaps there is a similar kind of problem here. Whether the fault is with the phone or network(s) I don't know. I did try radio 1.06, which I believe was the original shipped version but that was the same.
i'm so glad i read this!! just called up t-mobile, they activated my HSDPA (thought it was just on by default)!.
tests so far showing 1.3 mbit download speed, i'll try in my home area too later tonight.
I'm seeing the "H" icon, not the "3" icon. using the latest HTC ROM that came out in january, not the default t-mobile one.

My hsdpa IS active. I get approx 90kbit/sec downloads on T-Mobile and I see a '3G' icon not a 'H'

I was getting intermittent hsdpa also and dns failures (except in gsm) and getting really fraustrated. I was going to ask for deactivation. Luckily the technician I spoke to (about the tenth person in 3 days) that eventually got me connected, new his stuff. He tried to trick me into admitting that I was using my phone as a modem for my computer and only connected me after I denied it. It might sound like conspiracy theory but I got the feeling that he only connected me when it sounded like I knew slightly more than the average Joe. My hsdpa connection has been faultless ever since. Getting consistently high speeds even with 1 bar. high speeds is not 90kbit/sec smads!! and even worse dns failure.
I had similar fieldtest numbers before my proper activation. now all much higher.
just ran a few more tests on this...
i manually set the phone to 3G instead of HSDPA (tool is somewhere in this forum). speed was about 280kbit.
HSDPA on and i get between 700 and 1200kbit. not as fast as the original 1300 i benchmarked earlier, but still great
I am connected to T-Mobile Internet (HSDPA) and I ran a speed test at www.dslreports.com/mspeed but I only got 395kbps, 0.324s latency. Why so slow?
That speedtester is rubbish - I once got 250k on wifi.

i've just found out that t-mobile doesn't activate HSDPA unless you call up CS and ask them to enable it. some people have been told that you have to be on web n walk pro to have HSDPA whereas others have had it added free of charge.

if you have the H - then you are def on it. If it was just 3G it would say 3G. But bare in mind that T Mobile HSDPA has been dreadful for nearly a month. It gets so bad that I am considering asking them to release me from contract for violating terms of service. I pay for HSDPA as advertised and I dont get it.
I had web&walk previously and I managed to get full speeds for a while. Once I have reduced my call plan(not data) the speeds were down to 300kbps and less. On these occations, I would still see H as the indication but sure they were capping it on the network.

My provider say that I have all set up correctly and doesn't know why speed is 'so slow'.

Which provider? Mobitel or Si.mobil? I have Mobitel, and it's true, that it isn't always as fast as it should be - in centre of capital city...
My ISP is T2, unlimited for 10€. It's not listed on this forum settings dropdown menu

Nearly everywhere 7.2mbit hspa is a myth - the only way you can get it is if nobody else is using the celltower.
A very reliable speed test application is: http:www.mobilespeedtest.com.
The dsl.reports app (on my HD) provides non accurate results.
The more people using a HSDPA or 3G celltower - the slower your speeds get.
Trust me - I've done all the testing from a corporate perspective - HSDPA 7.2 is a myth - you'll never get that speed - its more like 3.2mb/s MAX!. On 3G the average bandwith is about 300kb/s - but only on a good day.

With www.mobilespeedtest.com it managed to get 3Mbit downstream in Ljubljana-Vič, haven't tried Centre yet. For normal browsing and download of some small files it's ok. I'll report if I get better bandwidth!
With www.mobilespeedtest.com:
- I get a 2.37 Mbps speed test result on the 3 MB file(biggest) while connected from my mobile to a HSDPA 3.6 network which allows for a max 1.1 Mbps speed.
- I get a 2.4 Mbps speed test result from my computer while connected on a 15 Mbps ADSL - yes - I do 1.7 MBytes/sec transfers all the time - careful at the units of measurement!
- on smaller than 3 MBytes file size, the results are just random

The flow of the web pages has been so severely thrashed by ISP filters its not reliable to real testing anymore.
Stop.Calling.Any.Web page.A.Speed.Test.
Ping flood is designed for real measuring a line speed, but most ISPs have scripts which will ban you automatically if you sent packets faster than with a delay of 0.02 seconds. That is because is too much prone to abuse.
Here is some strangeness that I'd like to investigate.
When I'm on a voice call, data usage is strangely inhibited even when on Wifi. The market will report network errors, and when it does download an app, it will never install the app while on the call. Other apps that use data are either non-responsive or extremely slow. For example, the Engadget app will display text, but not images. As soon as the call is ended, all returns to normal. Again, this is not over 3g/4g, but Wifi enabled and active.
As an additional datapoint, over the same Wifi network, my laptop gets 12.63Mb/s down and 1.36Mb/s up while my Atrix gets 2.4Mb/s down and 1.4 Mb/s up.
Is anyone else having reduced and/or null data traffic while on voice, even on Wifi?
speedtest seems fine for me on WiFi. Not quite the max bandwidth.... my connection is 15Mbit down and it comes in around 9... but not bad either way. Upload bandwidth seems right about where it should be on WiFi.
As for the data use while on call.... i dunno. Never used it when i used my iPhone that i can remember.... and haven't had my Atrix long enough to even think of doing so, so i wouldn't know about that one.
Well I haven't tested data use while on a call, but as for the wifi data speeds...I've never once used a phone that received as fast a wifi signal as this one. My home modem usually connects at around 15.5Mbps. My phone speedtests on WiFi at 13-15Mbps. That's *amazing* for a phone.
I have had my SGSII for about 6 weeks now. Running it on the Telstra Next G network.
The problem is I am having a shocking internet experience.
My experience is based after coming from the HD2 running Android.
I have had the network freeze a few times. This is identified by the traffic arrows stay stuck. Airplane mode and back resets.
Basically cloud based apps like Market, Maps etc takes ages (60s-5mins) to start up. Kill and re-launch is quick).
Lots of network errors in Google Market.
Lots of Server unreachable errors in Emails (Pointing to exchange 2007)
I have updated the APN details to use Telstra.internet.
Great reception at home and work.
Calls and SMS's are fine.
Ideas? Waiting to see the Cyanogen rom. Wondering if my experience is due to Kies or another program getting involved with internet.
Any ideas please. My HD2 ran with the same Sim and worked like a rocket. No such issues.
Have you tried turning fast dormancy off? I'm on the Optus network, but I found with fast dormancy on I was getting unreliable internet (market would timeout a lot, doing installs/updates would fail straight away, etc). When I turned it off, I got better speeds and the connections were reliable.
Turn fast dormancy off:
1. In dialer - *#9900#
2. Select Disable fast dormancy
no such issues for me, using a vodafone branded handset. The only thing is that it will occassionally use 3telstra instead of telstra, in which case i need to manually select the network. a bit of a pain but not 2 bad

After contacting Samsung for an insane period of time (ended up on an international call to England i think... or now that i think about it could have just been some English guy in Aus lol) I have got an official explanation and confirmation that this issue is being looked into for KE8 (but it appears that KE8 has been launched in India already so it might be KE9).

I am no expert on mobile technology this in-depth however the (probably very) dumbed down version the Samsung guy told me was this;

The problem stems from the fact that this phone has 3 forms of data connection, 3G, HSDPA, and HSPA+.
3G is what we have all had since 3/Telstra launch 10 years ago.
HSDPA is the 7.2mbps connections that we got after that.
HSPA+ is the full fledged 42mbps Next G stuff that only Telstra has.
The problem is, when you are just using the phone as "a phone" it idles on a 3G connection to save battery and when you initiate a data connection it flicks on to the higher connection protocols for better speed.
What is supposed to happen when you initiate the data connection is the phone checks for H+ connection, then for H and then finally 3G. For some reason if you arent with Telstra or are in an area without HSPA+ the phone gets hung up for too long attempting to initiate the H+ connection and refuses to drop back to H!
Also, even if it does give up on H+ it then has an issue with falling back to 3G. Resulting in the problem that if it cant get H+ or the tower is too flooded for a H connection you get absolutely nothing until you restart the data mode within the phone, renegotiates with the tower and BAM, you are back in business.
So... there are 5 fixes;
1. Wait for KE9 (or what ever firmware fixes the modem timings etc)
2. Get a Telstra sim and never leave an area that has H+
3. Turn off/on data mode whenever it happens
to which i told him they were stupid answers and completely unacceptable, but then he came out with this complete gem!
4. using service code *#301279# you can turn off HSPA+ completely forcing it to start the data connections on HSDPA
5. using *#301279# again you can just turn off HSPA+ and HSDPA meaning it instantly starts downloading the data on 3G without delay
Now yes, i thought... great... ive bought this $779 phone that has all the latest and greatest technology and I cant even use it! But, I did some testing!
First of all my normal sim is Vodafone so turning off HSPA+ is an obvious one for me, im never going to get it so why bother. So now that the phone only attempts to get a connection with HSDPA the need to turn off and on data connection was getting more and more rare but still having the problem (i have a feeling that is due to congestion?). So i bumped it down to 3G only and it works perfectly 100% of the time!
The point of these faster connection protocols is speed so i did testing.
Vodafone sim, 4 bars of signal in the middle of a shopping centre.
HPSA+ turned on = 4mbps down, 1mbps up
HSDPA turned on = 4mbps down, 1mbps up
3G only = 3.5mbps down, 1mbps up
did this over and over and over again and to be perfectly honest, im willing to lose 500kbps to make sure that data always works and if you are just doing general web browsing the time it takes to initiate the HSDPA connection wastes more time than the slightly slower speeds with 3G does.
Now obviously this only works fine in my situation, if you are with Telstra and going from HSPA+ down to 3G means going from 20mbps to 3... i would be pissed. But for the rest of the country you are talking about a loss of less than 1mbps so in real world situations with just small amounts of burst data its fine

THIS IS A GREAT POST (even if it is a repost from whirlpool)!
So many people appear to be having this issue (including myself on O2 UK) where the data connection is stalling.
That code (*#301279#) is a gem.
Whilst I am certainly not happy that Samsung have released this phone with such a massive issue (telling you to wait until KE9 for a fix is really quite terrible!), I would rather have this fix in the meantime whilst waiting for the new firmware.
I have just disabled H/H+ by selecting 'Release 99 HSPA off' and my stalling issues have disappeared. Furthermore, my down speed is still 1.5 Mbps and upload speed is also 1.5 Mbps. I am more than happy with that speed. As the quoted post states, if you want more than this speed, this solution will not be good for you.

If you have it enabled it will fall from H to 3G in 7 seconds when connection is idle, otherwise in 30 seconds. 7 seconds are to short it will lose time and battery renegotiating to H to often. Ex: when you read your rss feed it will renegtiate higher speed for every article you read, very annoying.

this should be stickied, fixed my issues i had on optus the connection would continually change from H, and 3g and stall i just disabled all except 3g and now its perfect and very quick great post!
One thing i did on mine with Telstra is change the APN from Telstra.wap to Telstra.internet made the internet feel better. Also got much better upload and download speeds.

May be a sillt question but.
I used the stock dialer and put *#301279# in
Menu popped up.
Used my finger to press "[2] Change HSPA Revision"
Pressed "[2] Release 5"
Goes to menu with two options of which none seem to do anything when pushed.
Went back to strat of menu and selected "[1] Release R99"
Same options and none can be clicked.
So am I not doing this right? Have the changes been made with no signs or message? If they have changed how do I get them back?
I expected the option to change to visually say its "off" or something.
Although no message came up it appears my phone is staying in 3g so maybe it worked... Although I am in low reception visiting the country side so maybe they don't have H or H+ anyway....
If I selected the first option does this restrict data to 3G?
Select 2nd option for H?
or Select 3rd option for H+ or unrestricted?
Is this how its works?
Edit: I have now found it works like I thought. The screen after I click either of the options then shows what is active and is the confirmation in a way. I jumped on the forum a little too quick......
Hi. I've book marked this because I get this issue thanks.
However it is worth noting that difference between 6 and 5 is only hsupa which is upload. So you wouldn't expect change in download speeds changing that going back to 3g of course affects both directions.

WOW!!!! I just switched over.. mine use to max out at about 8Mbps, but my last test before the swap was 6.7Mbps... switched over and i tested 10Mbps and then 11mpbs!!

Telstra.iph works best for me in Perth.
I use a SGS2 (bought in Europe through Expansys) on Telstra since 2 months now, without any issue. I used several firmwares and kernels since then (not to test, just to update: KE7, KG2, KG3), all behaved the same way.
I tried two different APN (telstra.iph and telstra.wap), both gave me the same kind of speeds (quite good, except some times in the middle of the day).
I never found the datas to create the telstra.internet APN (they do not seem to be on ausdroid). Could someone point me to them?
As an aside, I've just finished testing the I9000TDUKF4 modem (yes it works!), if Telstra did actually have tweaks made as they claim, there was no discernible difference on Telstra's NextG using their 'T' version KF4 modem and a stock KG3.
Any changes if any must be on the hardware level or via software set tweaks, the modem really didn't make any difference at all to my download speeds.

I have a Verizon HTC 10 that is unlocked. I'm using it on metro pcs.
It has the same T Mobile band for LTE that is throughout my neighborhood. I put the correct metro apn settings in. Calls and data both work. But I'm having two issues:
1: When I make a call data goes out. When it comes back in, LTE won't kick in. Typically have to restart my phone for LTE to kick in.
2: When it does kick in, it's either working great or not. Example. So I'll do a speed test and only get 1 MBPS. My wife's phone on the same band (band 2) will get 15 MBPS down. I'll test several times, and get the same speeds. Slow downloads. Kick on and off Mobile data with no fix. I'll drive around town and won't get 1 MBPS within 30 minute drive. Out the blue I'll do a speed test 12 hours later and I'll be getting 15 MBPS down in the same place I could only get 1. I'll drive all around town and be getting full speeds.
So in short: LTE when it's on will either get full speed in my area or under 1 MBPS. Or it will randomly get stuck on 2G.
Any ideas? With research it seems like some people with the unlocked version had some issues but not with the Verizon one.
I plan to switch to a Verizon prepaid or MNVO soon but seems like this could be a bigger issue.
Any ideas? I've heard of some people with the unlocked version having some of these type of issues. But it makes no sense. My speed tests are .5 .6 .5 .4 .5 .6 .7 .5 etc. all day. And randomly that night in the same spots, I could get 15 14 15 16 14 16. I can drive again throughout the neighborhood, and once it's good, it's good. And when it's bad, it's bad. My wife's phone will be consistently good throughout this process using the same band (using LTE discovery to figure out)
Sounds like an issue with Advanced Calling. Unless the feature has been activated by both the carrier and enabled on the phone, you're not going to have data during calls. Likely what's happening is that using the phone on Metro PCS doesn't know how to properly handle the fast network switching. You could always try to enable airplane mode and disable it to get back to LTE.
