[Q] Deep sleep reboot or something else? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've been running the Milestone release of AOKP for a while and while it's been generally stable, I seem to be having an an issue with reboots when I don't use the tablet for a while. Maybe.
Once maybe every few days, if it's been sitting for a while (or charging), when I unlock, all of my recent apps have been cleared. The stock battery info doesn't indicate any downtime, but GSAM battery monitor will indicate a reboot.
I've seen this on both KToon and Franco's most recent kernels.
Anybody else? Any ideas?
Thanks!

My aokp+franco also falls asleep and I nave to reboot. It's annoying, I'm going to change ROM. I'd like to know if it is related to the ROM or the kernel though.

I'd guess OP is seeing 'surface flinger RAM shell reboot' that's talked about often.
I'd guess europizza has a unit that is having a battery/motherboard/"power" related issue.
Why? - Based on reading these and other N10 help forums for the last 6 months.

While I have had the SOD with AOKP and Franco/KToon kernels, what I'm talking about isn't the tablet not waking up. It's that it's rebooting while charging or not being used for extended periods of time. (But I haven't had any SOD issues with the latest version of either of those kernels, btw.)

Ah, thanks. I've seen talk of this surface flinger business before, but never really knew what it was referring to. Haven't researched it much yet, but it sounds like something I'll just have to deal with for now.
Thanks again.

Working SoD fix from Dalingrin (re-post from rootzwiki)

Sorry if this is already posted around here somewhere, but I found this yesterday and was surprised that I hadn't seen anything here about it:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8853-working-sod-fix-from-dalingrin/
I installed the new kernel on both of my TouchPads last night, cleared both caches and fixed permissions, and set my lower CPU speed to 192MHz (from 384MHz to help prevent SoDs previously). I wasn't using SoftLocker, so I can't comment on that.
I haven't had a single SoD yet, and I left one of the TouchPads unplugged overnight to see what the battery drain looked like with the new kernel. I'm pretty sure it drained <1% overnight, and CPU Spy shows that all that time was spent in Deep Sleep.
Obviously this isn't a long-term evaluation, but initial results look promising.
UPDATE: Some folks have reported that applying this kernel breaks sound for them. I know it's happened to some people on alpha 1 and others on alpha 2.1, and I also know it hasn't happened to others (myself included). There's quite a bit of discussion about this on the linked thread, so if it happens to you, please refer to the existing information there.
Just flashed this clearing cache, dalvik and fixing persmission.
No SoD yet but NO SOUND.
I have no sound on my touchpad.
cleaned everything and flashed the fix again but no luck.

I think that may have happened to some other folks on the rootzwiki thread. Read down a bit and see what they say. I believe some of them reflashed CM7 with the new kernel (toward the end of the thread) and that fixed the issue. Worst-case scenario, someone has uploaded a recovery zip with the original kernel so you can roll back.
For what it's worth, neither of my TouchPads lost sound, so it's definitely possible to apply this without that happening.

I don't think it's been mentioned much because it isn't a common issue anymore, i've never had sod on my touchpad and a lot of people claimed alpha 2 fixed the issue.
Sent from my HP Touchpad using Tapatalk
Alpha 2 definitely didn't fix the SoD issue (otherwise why would Dalingrin have kept working on it?). I think most folks used some combination of SoftLocker and cranking up the minimum clock speed to avoid it, both of which have significant impact on battery life. Hopefully this kernel (or some subsequent iteration if this one doesn't fully address it) will give stability and good battery life, particularly when the device isn't being used.
I've had the SoD on both a1 and a2. Flashed this fix. No SoD yet. Sound is still there too.

according to the rootzwiki thread the fix is not allowing WIFI to go to sleep mode. This was the cause of most SODs.
You'll find in this fix that your WIFI will not turn off during sleep even if you set it to do so.
so after i installed the update it don´t save my "overclock"
i set up 1512 mhz but after reboot it´s gone and back at 1200
any idea for this?
Im not sure if Im the only one. But since Alpha 2 I have yet to see SOD, was there anyone else who saw SOD vanish completely with Alpha 2?
I had one sod with alpha 1 then none with alpha 2. I haven't installed any apps or changed CPU settings it just has never happened to me.

Not a single SOD here, but i skipped alpha 1.
After playing with it for a while, no SoD, but now I'm having wifi issues. Won't stay connected. Did a restore back. Now no wifi issues, but as soon as it goes to sleep, it wont wake up. Uggh. Can't wait till this gets stable. Getting bored of webos.

I get Sod all the time. I put my cpu to 648mhz and it still does it. I even put it up to 1500 min 1700max and it did it. I'll edit this post to see if flashing works. Im charging my touchpad at the moment.
EDIT: flashed. So far no SOD but its a little too soon to tell. We'll see what a few hours does.

i think the problem is alpha 1 related
im guessing a clean wipe will fix the problem...
I had sod from hell.. I just kept it on the touch stone to keep it awake in between.
This fix worked though. Whole day without death

Try No-Frills from Market. He's on here too. No SoD for me. It has some feature that prevents it.
Alpha 2.1 was already out by the time I got my touchpad, only had 2 SOD on it prior to installing this patch and none since. Currently I am using No Frills CPU with 192 min and 1512 max I think. Running great and no other issues to speak of. Sound is working fine and this has not impacted my battery life at all, may even be better.
Op should be updated to state that this kernel breaks sound on alpha1. Make sure you are on alpha2 before flashing.I posted both a revert and a repackaged alpha2 with the fix already applied in the thread on rootz.

I just updated my original post in this thread with a disclaimer about the sound issue. I think it's also affected some alpha 2/2.1 folks, so basically I'm just making sure folks know about it and know to consult the original thread for information about how to resolve it.
Ya I'm not sure what the common thread is with no sound then. I only experienced it in relation to alpha1.

Constant Battery Drain No Fix Yet

Hello,
Long time lurker here with an issue, I've tried many different solutions but seem to come up with no better results.
The main issue is that my atrix has never gotten better than 15 hours of life. It seems that it is not able to reach sleep state and therefore I get a constant battery drain of ~7.3% per hour regardless of usage.
I am a heavy user averaging 2 hours of screen-on time per day but I experience the same range of battery life (within an hour) whether I use the device or not.
I use background sync setting for google apps (gmail, contacts, music etc), whatsapp and groupme messaging.
I am currently using turl's ICS v6 with Faux123's v025beta kernel. However I've used Neutrino, Wet Dream and DarkSide with similar consistent results.
I recently bought a new OEM battery but that has not affected the run time. The last install of ICS I used the fastboot clean wipe (erase boot, preinstall, system etc) in hopes to fix possible lingering bugs but without any change in the battery run time.
The Atrix is from Bell, tegrapart d00. The screen was replaced once due to the screen becoming non-responsive for touch. Other than that no issues.
Using BetterBatteryStats it appears I have the "suspend" process bug that has been discussed on the forums before, preventing the phone from sleeping. This I think is the main issue, but different kernels and ROMs have not helped it at all. Is this a phone defect type of bug? I don't understand it enough to tell. Also previous forum posts concerning the suspend process have not yielded any types of fixes for it.
Any assistance or help with this issue would be much appreciated.
Switch to Turl v8 with stock kernel and make sure you fastboot -w first

Fixed! I had to flash a new radio. I flashed the 1.77.36P att radio. I had an older Bell radio before. Drain was 7% an hour before, 3% an hour now. Huge difference.

I got same issue as you (I think - can't install betterbatterystats for some reason market won't let me!!!) but I'm already running N_01.77.36P. Was going to reflash, but read the last comment. What is this new radio and can you help me find a CWM zip? no luck in google so far.

Battery Drain using AOSP roms?

Are you experiencing high battery drain or high o.s readings in battery stats? I've had this problem for over a year running any aosp rom. I've tried everything. Was told its a rogue app...etc, etc. I finally fixed the problem. Its Google doing it to us. Now for some, the issue doesn't happen but for others simply open your battery stats and look into your high o.s reading by pressing it. In the reading you will see GoogleBackupTransport. That is the culprit. Now using root explorer navigate to system/app then mount system and then locate Google Transport. Its normally right under Google contact sync. Delete it and restart your phone then enjoy your battery again. Check battery stats and you will see your o.s drop. Its taking me awhile to figure it out but it really does work. Try it and tell me your results. Post pics of before and after.

I've wondered the same thing. I can't find anything on it either. Its just something that runs in the background sucking on the juice. It comes bundled in gapps and comes loaded in miui/dxrom. I thought it would screw up logging in on Google or what not but nothing. Also thought it had to do with restoring my apps but if that's the case, I'll restore my own apps than burn battery.

Never had the issue with Sense. That's why I stuck to Sense. I'd flash stock and up to the charts with o.s readings then as soon as I'd go back to Sense it would drop.

That's what I thought.....I just checked on my Sense 3.5 (HoneySmartDroid), and I didn't even see the O.S. on the list of battery uses. But in Sense, Google Maps takes the place of Google Transport in AOSP. It is constantly running in the background, even in multitasking. Kept hearing to clear data then force close, never worked. So I just uninstalled!

Its like a new world for me now. I'd dread flashing stock roms because of that. I've done endless research on the issue with no real results. I've seen people say after charging it reboot the phone and it will lower. I've heard rogue apps did it but I'd never install apps. I've heard to not check in setup to allow Google to keep my phone backed up and it still would climb. No real explanation. I've even seen people with the galaxy nexus complain to Google on their website about high o.s drain and they didn't know. I've deleted it and haven't had a single issue with any Google related stuff.

I downloaded BetteryBatteryStats 1.7.1.0 based on what you said in another thread. My Android OS is high, but it's not a process anyone mentioned.
Under Process, "suspend" is the highest, followed by Tapatalk XDA.
Under Partial Wakelocks, the highest is ConnectivityService (Android System process). All others have nominal usage.
I'm running IceColdInsomnia 7.0 and have only had this issue for the last two days. Before that, I was able to go two full days (light usage) without charging. Yesterday, I couldn't even make 12 hours with light usage, and today I'm already at 60% (before noon...).
Any suggestions? Am I using the correct BetterBatteryStats?
I was so stoked the first few days I used ICI because the battery life was absurdly good. Now I can't even make it to dinner time (or a charger) before it dies.
Forgot to mention, running Shot of Awesomeness kernel. Not sure if this is relevant, since I was using it when the battery life was both absurdly good and absurdly bad.

Kernel sounds like the problem. Try using the stock kernel the rom came with and test it out for a couple days. Kernels take a few days to settle in so that's why you were getting good and then poor results. I saw someone say in the inferno kernel thread that they flashed 1.5 and it fixed o.s. readings. Just read the thread to make sure nothings changed. Too many ics roms to keep up with.

[Q] Why is Android System consuming so much batter nowadays?

It didn't used to be like this. But now I get a pretty bad drain from Android System. It would be the second highest battery consumer, and would be using the CPU for quite a lot.

I have the exact same list of packages for Android System. Right now my phone's been on for an hour and it's at 21%, with a CPU total of 15 mins and it kept my phone awake for 4 minutes.
I dunno why it's like this all of a sudden. A week ago it was completely fine.
The thing is, I did clean re-flashes already and it still does that. I even wiped system. How do I properly reset my phone to get a clean slate? Should I RMA my phone if this issue doesn't go away?
Edit:
Just flashed MiNCO v6, and the drain seems to subside a little bit, but I need more time with my phone to judge better. Sigh, I'm missing CM's quick reply feature already!

It's not a hardware issue. The longer the phone is on, the lower % the Android System will be at (obviously lol) because the other stuff is averaging it out. You can also ry changing your kernel.
About the messaging quick reply, just replace MiNCO's mms.apk with CM's.

[Q] Random Reboots. Whats causing them?

I've been getting random reboots for a long time now. But it seems to have been getting more frequent recently. Did some research and many said to post up my last_kmsg. Here it is. Hope someone can identify the problem for me. I thought it was the kernel (previously using franco), Hence I dirty flash PA again. It happened on previous versions of PA too and I factory reset from time to time. So I'm not sure whats causing the issue. I cant seem to emulate the reboot. It happens even when my phone is in sleep mode. Let me know if there's any other info that you need. Thanks

what apps do you have installed?? is chrome or chrome beta one of them?...i had installed chrome beta and had random reboots as well...if not then try to install a different rom..see if that helps
sometimes it happens i would recommend you a factory reset and try with other ROM.
for example Carbon Rom + Hells Core no deadlocks and very fluid and stable!
they release a nightly per day!

I too have been getting random reboots on PA since moving up to 4.3. I can live with them as they only seem to occur when I'm not using the phone. My guess was it's an issue with 4.3 or PA ... which will be fixed I time, or it's because I restored all apps with titanium, which I don't usually do, and something got ****ed along the way?

I just uninstalled chrome beta as you suggested and install chrome in. I'm also suspecting a certain app that is causing the reboot but can't seem to pinpoint which. Hope someone that can interpret the last_kmsg could point out the cause. Will monitor a few days to see how it goes.

Is this ROM battery friendly? Battery is a main factor for me since I don't use much of the customisations like halo or pie. My battery brains reeeealy fast when I turn on 3.5g. Such vast difference compared to when I just use 2g.

nice! if you have uninstalled chrome beta then your problem my friend is solved! ....if you ask me...Vanir Rom by mbq with Hells kernel is a beastly combination. Battery is damn good i get 4-5 hrs of screen on time...and its damn fast too, closest thing to psx compared to speed with almost all the customization you would want

I just uninstalled chrome beta as you suggested and install chrome in. I'm also suspecting a certain app that is causing the reboot but can't seem to pinpoint which. Hope someone that can interpret the last_kmsg could point out the cause. Will monitor a few days to see how it goes.

yes my friend! i am looking for the battery friendly and this one is so stable! and hells kernel is being a good kernel even in Beta.
use 2G we cant do anything respect this.
You will need to catch a log when the reboot happens, since the last_kmsg is only written when the reboot happens, and is not written in case of soft reboots... So i thinkj last_kmsg won't help...
Mine was rebooting fairly often. By chance i went into settings > date and time and somehow the setting for “automatic date and time" got unchecked. Since I checked it I haven't gotten any reboots yet. Just posting this to see if anyone who has been having random reboots has that setting unchecked.

I took up your advice! But I'm still on stock kernel. Not sure if the jss hells kernel will be compatible with the 4.3 rev3. But it was mentioned on the thread that it is though. Haha. I'm getting 2hr+ screen on time with 2g. Maybe I should flash hells?

I just fetched all 4 logs using syslog app. Will that be helpful? I'm really a noob in this. Hahaha can't read the codes.

Hm... Interesting. Mine have been checked all these while. Don't think this is what's causing my reboots. I'll keep an eye on it nonetheless.

battery life usually depend on kernel..not so much on the rom..give hells kernel a try and see how much juice you can squeeze from your battery...im running jss kernel on rev 3 and works perfectly fine so no need to worry abt that...matrix, semaphore and franco kernel are good alternatives as well if hells kernel doesnt work for you...Are you still getting those random reboots?
The speed of vanir is craaaazy. But I'm not getting more than 2.5hrs screen on when on 2g. And there's some weird issues with the camera. Like screen tearing. Im guessing that would be from the hells kernel being incompatible to an extent.
How do you get 4-5hrs screen time??
