Constant Battery Drain No Fix Yet - Atrix 4G General

Hello,
Long time lurker here with an issue, I've tried many different solutions but seem to come up with no better results.
The main issue is that my atrix has never gotten better than 15 hours of life. It seems that it is not able to reach sleep state and therefore I get a constant battery drain of ~7.3% per hour regardless of usage.
I am a heavy user averaging 2 hours of screen-on time per day but I experience the same range of battery life (within an hour) whether I use the device or not.
I use background sync setting for google apps (gmail, contacts, music etc), whatsapp and groupme messaging.
I am currently using turl's ICS v6 with Faux123's v025beta kernel. However I've used Neutrino, Wet Dream and DarkSide with similar consistent results.
I recently bought a new OEM battery but that has not affected the run time. The last install of ICS I used the fastboot clean wipe (erase boot, preinstall, system etc) in hopes to fix possible lingering bugs but without any change in the battery run time.
The Atrix is from Bell, tegrapart d00. The screen was replaced once due to the screen becoming non-responsive for touch. Other than that no issues.
Using BetterBatteryStats it appears I have the "suspend" process bug that has been discussed on the forums before, preventing the phone from sleeping. This I think is the main issue, but different kernels and ROMs have not helped it at all. Is this a phone defect type of bug? I don't understand it enough to tell. Also previous forum posts concerning the suspend process have not yielded any types of fixes for it.
Any assistance or help with this issue would be much appreciated.

Switch to Turl v8 with stock kernel and make sure you fastboot -w first

Also try to calibrate your battery
Edit: when you replaced the screen are yo sure nothing is shorting?

Fixed! I had to flash a new radio. I flashed the 1.77.36P att radio. I had an older Bell radio before. Drain was 7% an hour before, 3% an hour now. Huge difference.

Try the newer 37P radio. It works just as well.

I got same issue as you (I think - can't install betterbatterystats for some reason market won't let me!!!) but I'm already running N_01.77.36P. Was going to reflash, but read the last comment. What is this new radio and can you help me find a CWM zip? no luck in google so far.

Chefs - softbank Japan battery drain

This is a polite request that the wonderful chefs in this forum please look at the extreme battery drain issues that were brought up here... It appears that trying to run any custom rom on the softbank version of the device creates a huge drain.
I can run stock rom with custom kernels perfectly, so maybe there are just a few files that needed to be tweaked/removed from custom roms to prevent this drain.
Thank you for the time and hopefully there is a simple fix for this!
I am in Oki using a SoftBank 001HT as well and had the same problem till my phone took a swim and I got a new one. Softbank said they repaired it but I had a totally new serial number, the only part I got back from my original phone was the sim/sd card cover.
With my original phone Current Widget was reporting a -150ma drain in standby when everyone else was reporting -3ma. The only way I could get a -3ma drain was to have the phone in airplane mode. I am currently running CyanogenMod 7 with my new phone and now i get -3ma drain in standby with data on, wifi on, bluetooth on, and data sync on just like everyone else.
Try following the steps in this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937080 And if that doesn't work try getting a new phone from softbank.

you just answered the question
by turning on airplane mode, you disable all radio functions. your battery drain stops so it's radio related.
try flashing different radios and see which one is the best for you.
I tried several radios and roms and still had -150ma drain with the old phone. I am using one of the same radios and roms that gave me -150ma drain on the old phone with my new phone and now I only have -3ma drain in standby.
My drain figures are just averages.

Thank you for clarifying that, cause i am on my 5th radio and none drain less than about 140ma unless in airplane mode.
So it must be something deeper than the radio.img...maybe a file in the ROM that wont let the radio ever go idle.
If someone could look at the files from a softbank japan ROM and compare them against the files of these other ROMs, we may be able to figure out the drain issue.
If anyone has any other ideas...please chime in!
Just for reference my stock ROM(the one that has no drain issues) is 1.35.762.2 CL277010
Just to clarify I am currently running CyanogenMod 7.0.0 stable release and radio 26.04.02.17 on my SoftBank branded 001HT with only -3ma in standby. I also ran it with radio 26.08.03.07 but my gps kept loosing lock. It was my old 001HT that had the -150ma drain problem.
The root and flash procedures I used were the ones on the on the Cyanogen Wiki page. I don't know if that makes any difference.

Looks like Softbank received a faulty batch of phones because I am having the same issues. Tried every rom/radio combo, but everything fails. ~150ma battery drain. The battery drain issue is getting rather annoying and I think I am going to do what you did and return the pos to softbank to get it fixed.
Did you root your old unit before returning it? If you did, did you unroot it before you went to the softbank shop?

It was rooted, Radio S-off, ENG S-off, Recovery Flashed, running one of the LeeDroid versons (even with -150ma drain with the screen off this rom gave me 6-7 hours vs. 3-4 CM7 was giving me), and I don't remeber what radio but it wasn't stock.
I was drunk at a bar when I knocked it in to the sink behind the bar and by the time I noticed, it was dead. I dried it with a hair dryer when I got home but it would not turn on so after I turned it in to SoftBank I dont think they could tell it was hacked or even cared since it was covered by the insurance.
I think hacking only voids the warrenty not damage protection insurance. Technicly if you brick your phone hacking it you damaged the phone and I assume the insurance would cover that. I only had to pay something like Y8500 and wait 2 weeks for them to "repair" it. They didn't repair anything, just gave me a new phone with a new serial number without the sim/sd cover and gave me my old cover back.
When I got my new phone the 1st thing I did was test it with current widget with the stock rom but the value was 0ma all the time. I went ahead and flashed it because 6-7 hours with LeeDroid was better then the stock rom and to my suprise i was getting the -3ma drain everyone was talking about so I flashed CM7 and still had -3ma standby drain. I thought it was SoftBanks network causing the problem at 1st, not the phone.
I don't think softbank users should assume that its a bad batch of DesireHD's just yet and try to get new phones. It could be other reasons and they should try the troubleshooting steps in the 2nd post 1st and try different rom and radio combinations and if they have tried EVERYTHING, then talk to softbank. I will post part of my 1st and 2nd serial numbers up when i get home and maybe they can be compaired or something then mabe we can confirm a bad batch.
I tried CM7 the last couple of days (which is very nice) and I didn't have any battery drain issues. That was my first Android Custom rom here in Japan on the Desire HD. I'm now playing with RCMix HD (also very nice) and I'll see how the battery lasts on that. I've not changed or installed any radios at this point. Are you sure you are using the correct APN etc?
(It can cost you a lot of money if you are not and your data bill is charged differently.)
On a second note: I really love this Touch Input keyboard in RCMix HD, and I'm not sure if the audio was better in CM7. If you try them out - please give me your opinions.
This is a double post reply.. I wanted to be clear that battery drain wasn't a problem with CM7 and I haven't changed or touched my radio. I'll see how RCMix HD holds up..
I am using Spike CM 7 right now. I like it a lot, but I'm only getting about 6-7 hours out of my phone now too. I need to figure out how to slow down the battery drain because it is super inconvenient to charge my phone twice per day.
My first phones serial number was:
HT0B6RX0**** <---- was BOUGHT 12/2010
Second phone was:
HT12JRXA**** <--- was MADE 03/2011
I am using CyanogenMod 7 and these are all the radios I have tried:
12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2 <--- Similar to stock radio
12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF <--- Similar to stock radio
12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M <--- Poor battery life
12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2 <--- Similar to stock radio
12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M <--- Great battery life but GPS did not stay locked
12.48.60.23U_26.08.04.07_M3 <--- GPS did not stay locked
The ones that I say are similar to stock are similar in battery drain and performance. 26.08.03.07 is the only one that showed much improved battery life but the GPS would not stay locked.
26.08.03.07 would give me 3-5ma 90% of the time with 60ma spikes 5% and up to 200ma the last 5%.
Stock and the other similar radios would give 3-5ma 50% and 150-200ma the other 50%.
Others my get different results. I am going back to 26.08.03.07 and check to see if the battery drain is as good as the 1st time I used it and to see if there is something I can do to keep my GPS locked.
OK, I have a little promising news as far as the battery drain! I flashed inspired saga v 1.0.1 made for the inspire 4g and I was getting a drain of 3ma with Wifi on and 1ma with it off(while screen is off)! The extreme downfall though was that a lot of programs were force closing, messaging and phone were broke, and cellular data wasn't working either.
So it looks like we may be able to use the inspire 4g roms as a base to see if we can get a working GB rom on our "mystery" softbank phones
Hope this helps!!

Got my dhd back from softbank the other day. I initially asked them to have a look at it because of the horrible battery drain, and possibly replace it but no dice. They said everything was fine with the battery (well of course, the battery isn`t the culprit in this case) but they did end up replacing the camera and the proximity sensor.
Still trying to figure out the battery life issue though. I tried the saga rom but the battery life isnt too great with that either. Maybe its due to the radio working properly with the new rom?
Did anyone try the new softbank ruu? Wondering how the battery life is with the new rom...
Do you have a link for it. I would love to test it.

You can grab it from this thread:

Make sure you have radio s-off before flashing though. Flashing the ruu will replace everything including recovery and bootloader so you will need s-off to downgrade again, if you need to, using and older ruu.

Thanks.
Help please
I have had my phone since day one, and I must be the only one who has neveer ever used the notification led. I seriously never paid attention. as far as battery, i found bus z to have fantastic life with ziggys 3/11 bfs wo havs, ocd to 1.114. Check your brightness settings, i run about 25%, and do you have gps on all the time, are you using bt all the time. this is the most stable rom ive ever used.

No gps on, no 3rd party apps, no bt on. I just re flashed and my battery was charged to 100% and it dropped to 80% while phone was on idle. What kernel

I think the notification led is an issue with z roms, when I've flashed them in the past I use the app blink to get it working again.

I also am having very fast battery drain. I dropped brightness to 50% and I tihnk I have had GPS going all the time. I will fix that now. I also want to know should I be using Version 3.0 >>>> Download or Version 2.2 >> Download
I know that sounds like a dumb question but as far as dates go it looks like 2.2 is the latest.
It "doesn't matter" which version you use depending on what you want as both are essentially the same minus a few, subtle differences. Nils provides several battery saving tips in the first page of both roms.
Nils Business Gingersense 3.0 v2.2 is based on Sense 3.0 thus it is more resource heavy. I personally use this rom and notice more battery life (as with any rom I use) when I don't use 3g. Not everyone is in my situation but I'm a grad student and I spend a good chunk of time at home so I primarily use wifi and extend battery life.
Nils Business Gingersense 2.1/3.0 v3.0 is a mix of Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0. It may be more toward you're liking if you can deal without several Sense 3.0 elements like widgets and rotating home screen.
What is it you do when you notice poor battery life? Also, ate you comparing your battery life to an AOSP rom?
Since I can't post in the dev thread yet....
I've had the ROM for a couple weeks with few issues. I am noticing problems with the camera saving pictures. Sometimes it's fine, other times the images don't show up for several minutes, then today, several never showed up in the gallery. Just looking through the gallery, sometimes older pictures show an error, or on some occasions, duplicate. The image never sharpens on zoom as it used to either. Tried a reboot and fixing permissions to no avail. Is there a known issue with the gallery in GB or with Sense 3 on these phones?

Big fan here, NilsP. Thank you!
Regarding battery life, I've been running this ROM for a couple of weeks and am getting good battery life, but I spend most of the day on WiFi (WiFi sleep policy = Never). I use the kernel included in the ROM and the stock radio.
Go in Settings > About Phone > Battery > Battery Use, then click on the battery graph. Check the line at the bottom that says Awake and compare it to Screen On. Your phone should not be awake constantly when the screen is off. If it is, then something is preventing your phone from sleeping. You can use an app like System Panel to monitor apps and figure out which is the culprit. This has helped me identify battery-hogging apps.
After flashing from 2.2 to 2.3 my available memory has gone from 130 to about 80 something. I don't know what i'm doing wrong here. Also I don't have anatase as an option in setcpu. any help errors be greatly appreciated. I love the ROM and can't wait to see 3.5.

I think the fast battery drain is not really the battery draining that fast. When I flashed this ROM, I had to wipe the battery stats and it slowed the drain amount down. At 1st I was losing like 10% every 10 minutes till I hit about 40% then it would hang there for most of the day. after wiping the stats it's a more accurate slow drain.

[CLUE] 2.3.4 GRJ22 Battery Drain

Hi,
I have a 9023 and performed the manual upgrade to 2.3.4. One thing I've noticed was a massive battery drain with the same previous usage.
Using Astro I've found that the process d.process.media was constantly using nearly 90% of CPU.
So, I have restarted and the process seems to have stop.
As I noticed some users also complained about the battery drain after the update. Please check if this process is also being crazy with you.
Actually, same thing happens on my 2.3.3 when i use a picture in usb storage as wallpaper. if i use system wallpaper, then problem goes

I would like to point out that the above process will not appear in battery usage screen. Also I have the same Cell Standby as top eater.
From what I see, battery usage is now more inline with what I had in 2.3.3 GRI40.
Still I'll charge it overnight ans see how it manages tomorrow during the day.
I can't find that process in my list. However, so far since the update my battery does appear to be draining faster. Im quite a light user and from one charge can get 2 days worth of usage (ie, charge tonight, use thursday and friday and charge friday night). I will see if this can still be acheived. Wont be happy if not.
Im trying 2.3.4 with kb3.

Initial findings not good. Lost 7 percent whilst asleep (~1% for every hr). Im pretty sure on 2.3.2 i used to lose 2 or 3%. How difficult it is it to role back to an earlier version. For me its quite important to be able to get 2 days usage out of it. One of the things ive been most impressed with.

Could you please not upload anymore screenshots without writing down some more details ?
Ok, you have 34% display and 31% cell standby, but how do we know if display time was 5 mins and not 2 hours ? Or if it was at 10% brightness or at 100% brightness ?
You should either write down all the details to the story, or don't write them at all. That includes uploading useless screenshots as well.

Battery Life BUG in ICS based ROMS

I've done a little research and there is a bug in the 4.0.3 AOSP release. You can see a link to this issue here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22878#makechanges
Attached is a screenshot of the problem ocuring in ICS Passion 13.1
I am curious is anyone NOT having this issue?
Yeah, mine started couple of days ago with the same problem. Android System shows 75% battery usage.
I wonder if there is a fix for this bug. I read whatever is on the link but there is all king of possible solutions.
I'm on MIUI and this is happening quite a bit too
Yeah, My battery will be 80% I reboot and it 10% or it's10% and I reboot then it's 80%...lol
I think, 84% is the culprit. Read my post here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23766036&postcount=2223

I used to have that issue on CM7 many moons ago. Did a bunch of searches and someone mentioned a process call GOOGLEBACKUPTRANSPORT.APK somewhere on XDA, that constantly runs even after you do not choose to backup to google (at least thats what I think its for).
I used root explorer to go into /system/apps and delete the GOOGLEBACKUPTRANSPORT.APK. I have never had any negative effect from doing it. It fixed the Android OS sucking up battery problem. Now I make it a point to delete it after flashing a rom regardless of whether batter drain is there or not. Never had that issue since.
Try it and see what happens. You can always just move it or rename it so you can put it back if it does not solve your problem.

Post to the Google Code bug
Just wondering if there have been any discoveries or new info on this problem.
I was experiencing this bug for a long time and I thought it was a bad battery. After replacing my battery it was still happening.
Battery life is the sole reason I went from ICS Passion (4.0.3) to Slim ICS (4.0.4).
I think battery life is better now, but I've also been incrementally restoring all my apps, ensuring battery drain isn't unreasonably affected with each restore.
I have this same issue! My battery lasted up to a day yesterday and today I had to charge my phone twice. Lasted only 4 hours. Pretty ridiculous I would say! I did try removing googletransport.apk and it reduced my android os to 25% or so from 60% that's about it.

Try using any of the ROMs on Android 4.0.4
EXROM
SLIM ICS
ZenWick
I too was on ICS Passion. I noticed a huge battery improvement when moving to the ROMs listed above (4.0.4 based)

Wow, this worked beautifully, thanks a mil illego.
Installed ICS Passion v13.1 a few days ago and had severe battery drainage, from 100% to 0% in 8 hours after calibration.
Looking at the battery stats I realized that the phone was always in AWAKE mode, with ANDROID SYSTEM sapping like 80%.
After renaming GOOGLEBACKUPTRANSPORT.APK the phone finally went into much needed sleep mode.
In hindsight, I enabled Google "Backup this Phone" during first ICS setup, and this must've tried to connect to the internet the whole time or had a process keeping the phone awake.
Brilliant fix, you made my day, thx.
I was using ICSSGS's 4.0.3 and noticing that my battery was draining pretty quick with little or no use.
I decided to try the Dark Knight 4.0.4 rom and my battery life has pretty much doubled.
No lock screen issues now either!
SlimICS!
I have been using SlimICS and have never had any batt drain issues. Googlebackup.apk is removed by default from this ROM.
I never get good battery life on a ics rom, tried on 3 different phones with 6 different roms. It looks nice but isn't battery friendly from my experience.

You must have one or more apps draining your battery.
User betterbatteryStats or "BadAss battery monitor" to check where battery is being used and whether any app is keeping the phone awake.
I agree
I have to agree. When I use a Froyo Rom my phone loses .5% per hour in idle. At times it loses a max of 1% per hour. However, with ICS ROMs I lose around 1.7% per hour. I have tried just about all ICS Roms, and all Kernels. While some are better than others, 1.7% per hour is pretty standard with any ICS. Trust me, I have no deep sleep issues, and no abnormal wakelocks. I've read all the post of saving battery life, and done them all. Roughly 1.7% per hour is what I get with any ICS Rom.
Personally, I like the look and feel of ICS so I just take the good with the bad. Can anyone shed some light on this. Why does ICS drain battery so quickly in idle vs older android versions. Or, is it just the Vibrant? Im stumped.

Curious observation in battery life on ICS LQ3

I have noticed accidentally yesterday that after I had my stock headphones pluggeed in the Note, the typical curve of the battery drain became much flatter and the different wakes during screen off have almost disappeared. The moment I unplugged the headphones, the battery drain went back to the usual 2-3% per hour on standby.
I am running stock LQ3 and stock kernel. I am rooted, as I have flashed it through Mobile ODIN, over stock, rooted LPY.
I have quite a lot sync-accounts - twitter, facebook, gmail, email, weather widget etc. so I am quite used to relatively short battery life but the trick with the headphones came as quite a surprise.
Before writing this post I decided to test it today as well and it is the same.
So, could someone test this and report? I think that if this proves to be true and common, the devs could easily track what's happening exactly and sort things out, so that battery can live longer without the headphones plugged in.

Maybe before writing this post you should also have asked yourself, Did I develop something here or am I asking a question?

Ugh...I am terribly sorry, this was meant for the General Discussion. Please, admin, move it there.
I've noticed that same if the SAR of the last samsung mobile is very low, the reception is quite good compared to other phones.
Do you notice also an improvement of the signal reception? Because if it is the case, it is that your headphones are used as a secondary antenna, giving the phone a stronger reception and less power consumption (better signal = less need of power usage for processing the signal)
This is just a theory...
After some ICS ROMs I went back to Gingerbread, mainly due to poor battery life.
When Litening ROM 2.0 was published I flashed that one. I liked the GB version a lot. The battery life was remarkable, a lot better than previous ICS ROMs. Because Litening is not much supported I tried Alba, also LQ3. A surprise because battery life was the same. I think I'll stick to ICS this time.

Alba often uses LB2 modem (from GB) in his ROMs - maybe it is the reason. I myself observed huge batterey drain on latest ICS ROMs while connected to Wi-Fi at my workplace. Fixed it by flashing ZCLP5 modem (from early "LP5 leak" ROM).

Hm, that is an interesting theory. I am not sure, however, that the headphones' cable really improves GSM radio reception. I think it is only for FM reception. Of course I have no knowledge behind that, just thinking.
I have frozen lots or apps in Titanuim Backup like:
- the whole range of SNS's
- Social Hub
- Wi-fi sharing manager
- the infamous wssyncmlnps
- software update service, etc
Also I have stopped a bunch of receivers, using Autorun Manager Pro, and disabled a lot of processes from Autostarts.
This should mean that I have opted out the most common battery drainers. I have tried to disable auto-sync for the time being, but that does not seem to be much of a drainer, so maybe the real problem comes somewhere from the modem.

Hey dimcus, i've been having this WiFi vs battery issues with some routers(including the one at home), weird enough it doesn't happen on some of them. I did read somewhere about flashing te Modem file, what leads me to a couple of questions ir you don't mind. Are you on ICS? Do i need to be root to flash the Modem file? If not, any risks involved? I'm on stock ICS LPY DBT.
Thanks in advance,
VR
I flashed the ZCLP6 modem earlier today, guessing that it would be better than ZCLP5.
It is too early to judge but first impressions are that maybe there is a slight improvement in battery on 3G but not something worth it over the stock XXLPT that I used to have and generally battery drain on wifi seems as bad as it has been ever since I flashed ICS.
I have read that some people dared to wipe their Notes and after that most of the problems had disappeared but I don't want to risk getting some brick.
I will try several other popular modems and will report back.

Hey, did you have the same issues? The orange arrow(th download ONE) keeps going on and off all the time, happened in most routers i've tried. So any help will be more than welcome...
Cheers,

Please let us know how you get on with them. Currently on LR1 modem and noticing a few strange wakelocks.
I have been with LR1 modem for about 40 hours now. What is better than the ones before is the much better behaviour on wi-fi. Other than that it is hard to tell any differences. So far 7 hours since unplugged, 1 h screen-on, half time wifi, half time 3g - battery is at 75%

wow.. that;s great.. i upgraded to ICS 5 days ago.. super poor battery..
then I heard to go with speedmod kernel, which I did.
no change..
Can you'se tell HOW TO change the modem?? I need to do something... mine just dont last worth a crap.. half day..
should I try a modem? and can you please say how to do just the modem??.
my baseband is N7000XXLPT
and build # is IML74K.XXLPY
thank you!
Unfortunately after several different ICS Roms (From Stock LPY to Cleanote 2.20) with several different Kernels (Stock, SpeedMod, Goku and more) and few modems (XXLPT, ZCLP5) I had to go back to Ginger due to extremely poor battery life. With all roms /kernels/modems combination the behavior was very similar. The phone was going into deep sleep pretty easily when idle with very low battery drain. On the other hand when using the phone I was getting about 10% drain each 20 minutes (A little less with data wifi and all sync off). I was also getting overheating with temp most of the times over 40 deg C. This drain was almost the same even with system energy savings on. I could not understand the reason for this strange behavior considering that many other users are having great battery life on ICS with their devices. Anyone is experiencing this situation ? NB now with Ginger the battery life is ok.

Hi
Do you by any chance have a German Note ? Mine is German and I was wondering if all the German notes had the same behaviour ..
Thanks
Battery drain with cm10 paranoid android
I am facing a huge battery drain issue. Used the phone for downloading and playing games and general usage yesterday and battery only lasted 3.5 Hours. Need to continuously watch the battery as it drops about 10-20% on idle. Checked the wakelocks and mainly wifi related, the phone is going into deep sleep just fine. HELP PLEASE!!!
lol continuously watching means you're the wake lock.
btw phone only has 3-3.5 hour screen on time. When playing games its usually less.
All do some reading into analyzing battery life betterbatterystats and cpu spy
