Battery Life BUG in ICS based ROMS - Vibrant General

I've done a little research and there is a bug in the 4.0.3 AOSP release. You can see a link to this issue here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22878#makechanges
Attached is a screenshot of the problem ocuring in ICS Passion 13.1
I am curious is anyone NOT having this issue?

Yeah, mine started couple of days ago with the same problem. Android System shows 75% battery usage.
I wonder if there is a fix for this bug. I read whatever is on the link but there is all king of possible solutions.

I'm on MIUI and this is happening quite a bit too

Yeah, My battery will be 80% I reboot and it 10% or it's10% and I reboot then it's 80%...lol

I think, 84% is the culprit. Read my post here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23766036&postcount=2223

I used to have that issue on CM7 many moons ago. Did a bunch of searches and someone mentioned a process call GOOGLEBACKUPTRANSPORT.APK somewhere on XDA, that constantly runs even after you do not choose to backup to google (at least thats what I think its for).
I used root explorer to go into /system/apps and delete the GOOGLEBACKUPTRANSPORT.APK. I have never had any negative effect from doing it. It fixed the Android OS sucking up battery problem. Now I make it a point to delete it after flashing a rom regardless of whether batter drain is there or not. Never had that issue since.
Try it and see what happens. You can always just move it or rename it so you can put it back if it does not solve your problem.

Post to the Google Code bug

Just wondering if there have been any discoveries or new info on this problem.
I was experiencing this bug for a long time and I thought it was a bad battery. After replacing my battery it was still happening.

Battery life is the sole reason I went from ICS Passion (4.0.3) to Slim ICS (4.0.4).
I think battery life is better now, but I've also been incrementally restoring all my apps, ensuring battery drain isn't unreasonably affected with each restore.

I have this same issue! My battery lasted up to a day yesterday and today I had to charge my phone twice. Lasted only 4 hours. Pretty ridiculous I would say! I did try removing googletransport.apk and it reduced my android os to 25% or so from 60% that's about it.

Try using any of the ROMs on Android 4.0.4
EXROM
SLIM ICS
ZenWick
I too was on ICS Passion. I noticed a huge battery improvement when moving to the ROMs listed above (4.0.4 based)

Wow, this worked beautifully, thanks a mil illego.
Installed ICS Passion v13.1 a few days ago and had severe battery drainage, from 100% to 0% in 8 hours after calibration.
Looking at the battery stats I realized that the phone was always in AWAKE mode, with ANDROID SYSTEM sapping like 80%.
After renaming GOOGLEBACKUPTRANSPORT.APK the phone finally went into much needed sleep mode.
In hindsight, I enabled Google "Backup this Phone" during first ICS setup, and this must've tried to connect to the internet the whole time or had a process keeping the phone awake.
Brilliant fix, you made my day, thx.

I was using ICSSGS's 4.0.3 and noticing that my battery was draining pretty quick with little or no use.
I decided to try the Dark Knight 4.0.4 rom and my battery life has pretty much doubled.
No lock screen issues now either!

SlimICS!
I have been using SlimICS and have never had any batt drain issues. Googlebackup.apk is removed by default from this ROM.

I never get good battery life on a ics rom, tried on 3 different phones with 6 different roms. It looks nice but isn't battery friendly from my experience.

You must have one or more apps draining your battery.
User betterbatteryStats or "BadAss battery monitor" to check where battery is being used and whether any app is keeping the phone awake.

I agree
I have to agree. When I use a Froyo Rom my phone loses .5% per hour in idle. At times it loses a max of 1% per hour. However, with ICS ROMs I lose around 1.7% per hour. I have tried just about all ICS Roms, and all Kernels. While some are better than others, 1.7% per hour is pretty standard with any ICS. Trust me, I have no deep sleep issues, and no abnormal wakelocks. I've read all the post of saving battery life, and done them all. Roughly 1.7% per hour is what I get with any ICS Rom.
Personally, I like the look and feel of ICS so I just take the good with the bad. Can anyone shed some light on this. Why does ICS drain battery so quickly in idle vs older android versions. Or, is it just the Vibrant? Im stumped.

Thanks.

I have had my phone since day one, and I must be the only one who has neveer ever used the notification led. I seriously never paid attention. as far as battery, i found bus z to have fantastic life with ziggys 3/11 bfs wo havs, ocd to 1.114. Check your brightness settings, i run about 25%, and do you have gps on all the time, are you using bt all the time. this is the most stable rom ive ever used.

No gps on, no 3rd party apps, no bt on. I just re flashed and my battery was charged to 100% and it dropped to 80% while phone was on idle. What kernel
are you using?? Also are you on version 6.2?
I think the notification led is an issue with z roms, when I've flashed them in the past I use the app blink to get it working again.

I also am having very fast battery drain. I dropped brightness to 50% and I tihnk I have had GPS going all the time. I will fix that now. I also want to know should I be using Version 3.0 >>>> Download or Version 2.2 >> Download
I know that sounds like a dumb question but as far as dates go it looks like 2.2 is the latest.
It "doesn't matter" which version you use depending on what you want as both are essentially the same minus a few, subtle differences. Nils provides several battery saving tips in the first page of both roms.
Nils Business Gingersense 3.0 v2.2 is based on Sense 3.0 thus it is more resource heavy. I personally use this rom and notice more battery life (as with any rom I use) when I don't use 3g. Not everyone is in my situation but I'm a grad student and I spend a good chunk of time at home so I primarily use wifi and extend battery life.
Nils Business Gingersense 2.1/3.0 v3.0 is a mix of Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0. It may be more toward you're liking if you can deal without several Sense 3.0 elements like widgets and rotating home screen.
What is it you do when you notice poor battery life? Also, ate you comparing your battery life to an AOSP rom?
Since I can't post in the dev thread yet....
I've had the ROM for a couple weeks with few issues. I am noticing problems with the camera saving pictures. Sometimes it's fine, other times the images don't show up for several minutes, then today, several never showed up in the gallery. Just looking through the gallery, sometimes older pictures show an error, or on some occasions, duplicate. The image never sharpens on zoom as it used to either. Tried a reboot and fixing permissions to no avail. Is there a known issue with the gallery in GB or with Sense 3 on these phones?

Big fan here, NilsP. Thank you!
Regarding battery life, I've been running this ROM for a couple of weeks and am getting good battery life, but I spend most of the day on WiFi (WiFi sleep policy = Never). I use the kernel included in the ROM and the stock radio.
Go in Settings > About Phone > Battery > Battery Use, then click on the battery graph. Check the line at the bottom that says Awake and compare it to Screen On. Your phone should not be awake constantly when the screen is off. If it is, then something is preventing your phone from sleeping. You can use an app like System Panel to monitor apps and figure out which is the culprit. This has helped me identify battery-hogging apps.
After flashing from 2.2 to 2.3 my available memory has gone from 130 to about 80 something. I don't know what i'm doing wrong here. Also I don't have anatase as an option in setcpu. any help errors be greatly appreciated. I love the ROM and can't wait to see 3.5.

I think the fast battery drain is not really the battery draining that fast. When I flashed this ROM, I had to wipe the battery stats and it slowed the drain amount down. At 1st I was losing like 10% every 10 minutes till I hit about 40% then it would hang there for most of the day. after wiping the stats it's a more accurate slow drain.

Samusng Galaxy S2 horrible battery.

Hey guys, I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S2 (over 2 months ago)
At first it was really good with battery life, lasting over a day with medium use.
It started to get really bad, draining down from 100% to 50~ over night with no use at all.
I searched the problem and came across these forums, which said 2.3.3 was a problem sometimes.
Now this is also my first android phone, so I'm not sure exactly how to do all the tinkering around with it. Long story short, I found that changing to 2.3.4 helped a lot. It did, for 2 days, now I'm getting the same problem again. Maybe I didn't do it right? Need help! (also this forum is huge, not sure if I'm in the right spot)
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM and kernel? Pick out a ROM that you like and then install a nice kernel like Speedmod. Lite'Ning ROM v6.1 and Speedmod T39 together really increased my battery life.
Is there like a "how to" section on this site somewhere?
As I said, this is my first Android phone, so I'm a little lost as to how it all works

Or also get titanium backup, and freeze all the useless crap on the phone that you dont use. I did that and it went from 7% every hour (despite the fact that there were no wakelocks) down to 0.5% every hour
EDIT- on standby/very little use, that is.
Also after you flash charge your battery to 100percent and calibrate your battery there is a good free app in the market

Well if you're using its smart phone capabilities it will really drain quickly. Specially when on data. What I did was to get an extra variety and an external battery charger-best investment for this phone ever.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You can also see what drained your battery by going into battery usage: Menu - settings - about phone - battery usage. or create the shortcut on your desktop.
download betterbatterystats to check what processes are burning your battery and stuff. helped me a lot, this app.
Given that you are getting decent performance for a bit, which then drops off, I'd say it was far less likely that the cause was the hardware or the ROM and far more likely that it is something you are doing with the configuration or software.
Try removing any widgets you have added - does that improve battery life? If so, add them back one at a time until you find the culprit. Also, make sure you are not signed into stuff like Latitude - that is an absolute battery killer.
You have seen that you can get decent life from the battery, now you just need to work out what affects that.
It was the 2.3.4 OS draining the battery. I wouldn't touch my phone, and in 8 hours it went from 100% to 20%, with the status saying Android OS 100% in battery usage.
Now I'm on 2.3.5, battery is at 95% after 4 hours.
I'll give it a few days, and see exactly how it goes and if there is a substantial difference in battery life in relation to use.
I almost had the same problem with the battery but i flashed omega rom and so far i have no problems! I always have wifi on when i am at home and 3g when i am not at home and the phone can run up to 2 days!
Have you tried doing a basic search and looking at one of the 100's of other threads crapping on about battery life?
<deleted> sorry
galaxy s2 i9100 Battery Problem!
I am using Samsung Galaxy s2 for a while and I am facing an extremely low Battery Back up. Around 9-10 hrs to the max. I got the battery changed from the Samsung service center and have tried changing alot of different firmwares.
KE4 -> KE7 -> KF3 -> KH3 -> KI3 -> Simple and clean 1.2 KI4.
Nothing works.
I am attaching my "Battery Usage" images along. Please find a solution for me. Thank you.
Calibrate your battery, but you must have root access. When you have root than load the calibrate app.
i am quite heavy users on my sgs2 at first i had battery problem lasting only 5 - 7 hours... i got juice defenders free version from market and well it didnt boost my battery life to 48+ but it did made me last 1 and half day
New battery stats!!
Alright I experimented with the battery to check whether there is a problem with my battery or my firmware/kernel.
I tried the same battery on 2 different Galaxy s2. Battery stats below :
DEVICE 1:
Firmware : Stock KF3 Rooted
Kernel : Stock KF3
Battery Usage : 14hrs
Display : 45mins
Voice Calls : 1hr50mins
Battery remaining: 50%
DEVICE 2:
Firmware : Simple & Clean v1.2
Kernel : SpeedMod k2-18 test3
Battery Usage : 12hrs
Display : 45mins
Voice Calls : 2hrs
Battery remaining: 19%
Now in the above case I have used the same 1650maH battery in 2 different handsets. So why so much difference in battery life on an almost similar usage when I also made sure that the Brightness levels of both the phones also remain same.
Please help me out on this.

[Q] Do you have battery problems with SwiftDroid RC5?

Hi! I wanted to know if you guys have a problem with the battery life on SwiftDroid RC5. I have a poor battery life and therefore big battery problems.
i had mine and bought a new batt no probs after that
Yes, I do. Since RC4 and RC5 I have very poor battery life. Before it was enough to charge once every other day, now I have to do it daily.
Actually after installing RC5 it was a disaster as battery didn't keep even 24 hours but after recalibration it's better. But even then during the course of the day while doing basically nothing (say, sending and receiving 3 or 4 sms) it goes down from 99% to 40%.
Edit: I should mention that I overclocked to 800MHz, but I used to do it before RC4.

yeah swiftdroid is a real battery drainer but

good in battery and performance!!
Same here. Experiencing battery problems on SwiftDroid aswell. Like mentioned above the battery drains even when doing nothing. Experience this on basically any mod built on SwifDroid ofcourse. Changed to EleganceSwift, waiting for mike to release AOSP with Bluetooth-free radio ;-)
There's something more to it.
Recently I was playing a bit with my phone, installed couple of applications and then suddenly I realized that battery doesn't drain as fast as it used to. One thing I noted is that for example Videos application doesn't reside in memory anymore. I'm not saying this one was the sole battery hog but I'm starting to suspect that those cases of battery going down very fast may be related to some misbehaving app or apps and not necessarily be Gingerbread's fault.
If that's the case, the solution would be, I imagine, to trim system preferences to have such apps killed fast not to let them stay active.
using ASIS atm, but when I was using RC5 I didn't notice much faster draining. Still, it depends how many apps are running on your device and did you overclock it? I used to have min 250MHz, max 600MHz and it was pretty fine with texting, multiple apps running and music. Now with min 825MHz/max 825MHz it's draining faster ofc
Well,I remember a day when i update to SwiftDroid RC5, the batter drains and there isnt any app running in background after that i changed to a another rom.
btw fdespotovski, Multiverse is my favorite rom, in fact, i wrote on the offcial blog but i have problems with the RC3, statusbar sound widget doesnt work properly for now im on RC2

I'm not using ASIS, still at RC5, and what I reported is that both RC5 and RC4 drain battery much faster than earlier versions. Assuming ASIS is just cosmetic change to RC5 it doesn't surprise me you didn't notice any difference. And again, I do overclock to 800MHz and I do it since M5 if memory serves me well. I know principles of overclocking and I know, and accept, drawbacks that come with it. But when at the same clock RC3 can live two days or more while sometimes RC5 barely manages only one then I suspect something is not right.
I tried to check which applications are responsible for battery drain but system report is not helping when telling that 98% took Android system, 2% cell standby and 2% phone idle.
Sorry for necroposting but I didn't want to litter forum with new thread and the problem itself hasn't go away.
I'm still using SwiftDroid v2.0 RC5 and until recently I still had problem of battery barely keeping one day: whole night on the charger and after moderate to no use during the day on the evening it was almost drained.
Recently I installed one more application (rather unrelated, I'd need really solid proof that CPU Spy directly improves energy usage) and after that the battery easily keeps for two days. Which brings back the theory I have that the short battery life is not necessarily caused by Android itself but by some applications staying in memory and not sleeping properly. If so, installing extra app may help just for this reason that it having higher priority will swap out those misbehaving ones.
Thus I propose little hunt, if anyone's interested. I'd like to stay focused on v2.0 RC5 (maybe RC4/ASIS if you believe the difference is not too big). I need reported both GOOD and BAD battery life. In either case please write down all apps currently in memory (you can skip those you have installed, I'm mostly interested in what comes from ROM). And don't forget to mention which actual version do you use and whether it's good or bad case.
Given some meaningful data I hope to isolate which apps cause excessive battery drainage. I'm not sure what to do with that information next but I think it would be good start anyway.
To make said start, here's what I have:
SwiftDroid 2.0 RC5 / GOOD battery
- DSP Manager
- Usage Timelines Free
- Doit.im
- K-9 Mail
- Auto Memory Manager
- Superuser
- Settings
- TM World Clock
- Go launcher EX (doesn't report itself as staying in memory but I suppose it has to be running somewhere)

Battery life decreasing...

Ok, so I've had my SGN for little under a month for the first few weeks I had it I was getting great battery life, almost 6 hours screen time full day of battery etc.. Then I rooted it using one click root because I wanted some more access, since then battery life has seemingly been slowly getting worse. I have tried changing back to stock roms and custom roms, I've fully discharged the battery and charged while it is off a number of times but I'm down to 3 hours screen time and can't get a full day out off it anymore.
Is this something to do with the way I rooted, what can I do test and try and get back my battery life, this is the main reason I got this phone..
It's hard to say if it was the first update I installed/rooting or something wrong with the way I'm charging but it's certainly decreased even on a stock ROM without installing anything..
Anybody else encountered this?

I have the same "feeling" with my Note. I have installed System Panel to monitor usage but I can't find anything specific that seems to be sucking the power. But it certainly "feels" like my battery is draining faster than before.
It's probably as the phone gets older, you install more & more Apps. Some of these are probably working in the background sucking your battery.

Even with a clean stock rom, it doesn't seem as good as it was without root or any updates.. Wish I remembered what the phone came loaded with, I'd give that a go..

Try Rocket Rom v17 or latest XXLA1 firmware and your battery life will come back even better than before, just me
Same "feeling" here! I will try LA1 firmware....
So I'm currently sitting on 4.30 hours screen time, 15 hours uptime with 20% battery remaining.
Running la1 firmware and la3 modem, been using stock browser. Taking lots of photos with flash too, so I think this combo has rectified my issues but I know there's more potential as this is roughly the same stats I got on my dhd, although that was underclocked and tweaked to the clappers.
Faith is resetored in my device, hopefully it improves.

Battery Life Rom REALLY Needed

Hello all
I have been roaming around XDA for a very long time now and I finally made an account because I simply cannot find an answer. I have a samsung vibrant and not the 4g nor can I upgrade(long story). I use my phone when I need it and i text alot. But lately my battery life hasn't been any good, I've tried reconditioning and the whole bit and nothing seems to give me my needed battery life. I am currently using ICS passion 13 RC1 and it works great, when Im not doing anything -.-; When I use it like for the internet or text a lot it drains. I got to 48% in 2 hours one time and thats with limited background processes. I know ALL about the keeping background proccesses and data using apps down so I hardly have any apps installed, which is very irritating at times, I dont even use the facebook app for that reason. I tried many different roms and it seemed Axura had done that best at one point but it was taken down or is no longer supported for whatever reason so I am now in search for a rom that can get me through the day. I text a lot and web browse occasionally. I dont have wifi so i cannot use that to save battery life while surfing so thats out. I would appreciate all the help and will try every rom if i have to lol XD
I appologize for the long message but I am so tired of hesitating to use my phone as a smart phone.
I get good battery life on the ICS Euphoria ROM. Your battery could be shot, you might try replacing it.
Any of the 2.3 or newer roms are going to get bad battery life. Fishmanmod's updating of Bionics has been very smooth and getting great battery life for me.
I find that battery life between 2.2 and ics is pretty much identical for me as long as there are no wakelocks preventing deep sleep. I'm currently on CM9 nightly w/ glitch kernel and deep idle enabled in nstools and have no battery life problems.
You could also look into getting an official 1800mah battery if you really need more juice
ICS Slim hands down the best.

Your issue is Passion. That ROM chews through battery worse than any I've ever used in the 2 years I've had my phone.

Its not just your Rom, I am on the CM9 nightly and noticed ICS ate my battery by noon today. I was down to 3% from 7am. Granted I am toying with it a bit more but I was still at work so I couldnt use it non stop and I wasnt even watching videos or listening to music on it. I have updated the kernel to SubZero 34 to see if that helps.
Chances are, your battery has lost some of its ability to hold a charge. I recommend buying a new OEM battery, chances are it'll increase your battery life by a good two or three hours.
So far, I haven't noticed a significant variation in battery use in various ROMs, I've found battery life to be more determined by the kernel.

On a side note, I destroyed my screen by stepping on it a few weeks ago. Ordered a new AMOLED screen (not the LCD knockoffs) and battery life did in crease by about 3-4 hours. Same OS, same battery.
So I think some excess drain could be caused by the screen, which might explain why some phones had such poor battery and others don't. I also no longer have the "graying/shadow" issue that plagues some of these phone.
So far ive had the best battery life with ICS passion RC2.1 and my 1800mah anker battery
Since flashing CM9 and then putting on the SubZero kernel (34) I did a full charge and decharge to test and got 12+ hours on it with my normal use. So I have to say SubZero kernel really helps out if you are on ICS.
I f you dont mind going back to a 2.2 rom I would suggest trying bionix 1.3.1 fishmanMod or Deranged9 fishmanMod alpha 1 both get awesome battery life especially when mixed with juice defender.
I was also using ICS Passion and noticed a significant degradation in available battery life. I have three batteries so I'm confident it was the From. Until then I had been using various Froyo rooms and all seemed to have better battery life than ICS. I personally felt it was more likely to be your kernel choice that would impact battery life. I just switched to the SLIM ICS from and I gave been very impressed with both the battery and the responsiveness. Same quadrant scores as Passion but it feels so much faster

I haven't taken the dive into ICS yet i may have to try that out.
If you r searching for nice n smooth rom try
[4.0.4][6-Apr]Slim ICS [3.2]

another thing you can do while flashing wipe battery stats only once....then reboot to normal drain your battery till it reaches 1% charge it full widout any interruption and when it reaches to 100% unplug it and do the calibration from any software available in the market I use Battery Calibration Professionals

repeat the process for atleast 3 days in a row and you will feel the difference..hit thanks if it helps
@OP ICS is simply not battery friendly. You're going to want to use froyo if battery life is that important to you.
Or you can build a battery friendly ICS rom and let us know how it all is
The later builds of Cyanogenmod9 I have been on the stock kernel and its going all day with moderate use without battery issues.

+1
Bionix Fishman Mod is the first custom ROM I've ever installed on my phone and it's battery life is AWESOME. I recently added an 1800 mah battery and I've had 24+ hours on one charge with moderate to heavy use. The ROM itself is smooth as glass and no glitches to speak of.
Trying Bionix

I just installed bionix-V FishmanMod Final 3. Fingers crossed. I don't mind switching back to 2.2 as long as I have better battery. However I did notice when I reinstalled ICS before going to bionix that just factory, not even logging into the market. I got 1 day and 7 hours of battery life, granted I did not do much but text occasionally and some web browsing here and there. Is it possible that the android market is constantly checking on stuff or there is some data being proccessed constantly? I do live in an area where my signal is not great for 3g like 1-2 bars.

Alright so after about a day with the rom, I noticed it's just as bad. I am still getting battery drain and yes I have a new battery in so it is not that. I unplugged it from around noon, did alot of working on it with reflashes and little bits of texting and mostly just scrolling around the O.S. im now at 44%. its been about 5 - 6 hours.
Although I have been switching the battery between 2 phones and their battery meter is very different. like a 5% difference so that may be confusing it. Will update.
