It didn't used to be like this. But now I get a pretty bad drain from Android System. It would be the second highest battery consumer, and would be using the CPU for quite a lot.
I'll post my battery screens and BBS stats soon. But for now, anyone else getting this issue? I'm on CM10.1 M1, tried different nightlies but still getting this f*cking problem. It's driving me crazy.

try a different rom besides for cm, or try a different kernel. no such issue here with the rasbean jelly rom/trinity kernel. android system stays between 2-6% here.

I have the exact same list of packages for Android System. Right now my phone's been on for an hour and it's at 21%, with a CPU total of 15 mins and it kept my phone awake for 4 minutes.
I dunno why it's like this all of a sudden. A week ago it was completely fine.
The thing is, I did clean re-flashes already and it still does that. I even wiped system. How do I properly reset my phone to get a clean slate? Should I RMA my phone if this issue doesn't go away?
Edit:
Just flashed MiNCO v6, and the drain seems to subside a little bit, but I need more time with my phone to judge better. Sigh, I'm missing CM's quick reply feature already!

It's not a hardware issue. The longer the phone is on, the lower % the Android System will be at (obviously lol) because the other stuff is averaging it out. You can also ry changing your kernel.
About the messaging quick reply, just replace MiNCO's mms.apk with CM's.

I used my phone for a 10 minute phonecall this morning, I did a little bit of wireless tethering to download some ppt files for my mba class on my laptop, and then I just did some basic surfing on the phone and using the xda app.
My battery level was at 80 at about 12:15 pm. I left for a little bit, leaving the phone where it was, and when I got back around 1:30ish, I looked at the phone and the battery level was 70. That's very uncommon and I was really surprised that it had dropped more than 1% or so in such a short time. And within a few seconds my phone just rebooted by itself. And when it came back up, it was running VERY VERY sluggish, and I opened up system panel, and my CPU consumption was at 90% or above. I had to reboot into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache, now the phone is running like normal.
I looked at my system panel monitoring data which I had running, and I'm posting the screenshots of the historical data.
It seems something suddenly happened to the system. I can't figure out what it is. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Check the logcat.
If you see a message saying something like "Can't read CPU frequency linked list - next isn't in the list" or something like that repeating endlessly as an error, and you happen to use iR's kernel, then it makes 2 of us and you can show him the logcat to debug.
I wanted to debug it, but I don't seem to find any time.
I'm using wild monks kernel that's listed in my signature. How does one do a log cat anyway?

Wildmonks' kernels are based on iR's source, if I'm not mistaken.
Go to Market, search "logcat".

correct.
I see the battery drop from 50% to 0....did you change anything with the battery calibration app?
I set my battery health to 100% from 94% and my phone switched off at ~25%. Try wiping battery stats.
Happening to me too. If you click on System you'll see it's really the suspend process. Typically on my N1 there is nothing in the log.
See here for further discussion: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126, "suspend" process runs continually in background at ~40% CPU on HTC EVO 4G
I had this problem too.after I installed look out on my phone, I notice that my phones battery was dropping significantly fast. I thought it was the look out app that drain the battery since it's a security app and should be running constantly. But it's not though cuz I installed the app on my wifes g2 too and hers is fine. Hers is stock btw and mine is running cm6.1. But after 2 days and few time rebooting it, it's fine and normal now.
I usually make it through one heavy using day, but when the problem exist it can barely make through half a day. I start my day at 8 and stop at 6

Anybody come up with anything on this yet??
I can confirm this issue happens with a whole bunch of iR's and WM's kernels. On the other hand, never happened on stock Enomther's kernel.
You can use OS monitor to see logcat or even dmesg log for battery stuff too. And you can use that app to export both logs to memory card whenever you want. I do that all the time to analyze my log from a computer when testing the battery calibrator app when developing new one.
No clue why that CPU is happening though. I, too, purchased system panel and It's by far the best app on my phone.
I had this once. It was a corrupt photo on my SD card. I formatted it, restored some files, and it never happened again.
Unless you really go through all your logs line by line I don't think you can figure this out. This includes both logcat and dmesg.
Are you experiencing high battery drain or high o.s readings in battery stats? I've had this problem for over a year running any aosp rom. I've tried everything. Was told its a rogue app...etc, etc. I finally fixed the problem. Its Google doing it to us. Now for some, the issue doesn't happen but for others simply open your battery stats and look into your high o.s reading by pressing it. In the reading you will see GoogleBackupTransport. That is the culprit. Now using root explorer navigate to system/app then mount system and then locate Google Transport. Its normally right under Google contact sync. Delete it and restart your phone then enjoy your battery again. Check battery stats and you will see your o.s drop. Its taking me awhile to figure it out but it really does work. Try it and tell me your results. Post pics of before and after.

I've wondered the same thing. I can't find anything on it either. Its just something that runs in the background sucking on the juice. It comes bundled in gapps and comes loaded in miui/dxrom. I thought it would screw up logging in on Google or what not but nothing. Also thought it had to do with restoring my apps but if that's the case, I'll restore my own apps than burn battery.

Never had the issue with Sense. That's why I stuck to Sense. I'd flash stock and up to the charts with o.s readings then as soon as I'd go back to Sense it would drop.

That's what I thought.....I just checked on my Sense 3.5 (HoneySmartDroid), and I didn't even see the O.S. on the list of battery uses. But in Sense, Google Maps takes the place of Google Transport in AOSP. It is constantly running in the background, even in multitasking. Kept hearing to clear data then force close, never worked. So I just uninstalled!

Its like a new world for me now. I'd dread flashing stock roms because of that. I've done endless research on the issue with no real results. I've seen people say after charging it reboot the phone and it will lower. I've heard rogue apps did it but I'd never install apps. I've heard to not check in setup to allow Google to keep my phone backed up and it still would climb. No real explanation. I've even seen people with the galaxy nexus complain to Google on their website about high o.s drain and they didn't know. I've deleted it and haven't had a single issue with any Google related stuff.

I downloaded BetteryBatteryStats 1.7.1.0 based on what you said in another thread. My Android OS is high, but it's not a process anyone mentioned.
Under Process, "suspend" is the highest, followed by Tapatalk XDA.
Under Partial Wakelocks, the highest is ConnectivityService (Android System process). All others have nominal usage.
I'm running IceColdInsomnia 7.0 and have only had this issue for the last two days. Before that, I was able to go two full days (light usage) without charging. Yesterday, I couldn't even make 12 hours with light usage, and today I'm already at 60% (before noon...).
Any suggestions? Am I using the correct BetterBatteryStats?
I was so stoked the first few days I used ICI because the battery life was absurdly good. Now I can't even make it to dinner time (or a charger) before it dies.
Forgot to mention, running Shot of Awesomeness kernel. Not sure if this is relevant, since I was using it when the battery life was both absurdly good and absurdly bad.

Kernel sounds like the problem. Try using the stock kernel the rom came with and test it out for a couple days. Kernels take a few days to settle in so that's why you were getting good and then poor results. I saw someone say in the inferno kernel thread that they flashed 1.5 and it fixed o.s. readings. Just read the thread to make sure nothings changed. Too many ics roms to keep up with.

Hi there; this is my first post so please go easy on me.
Bought a Nexus 4 which is my first Android device, but the battery life is bugging the hell out of me. Surely the screen should always be at the top, right? I left it to sleep overnight on a full charge to find that it had shot down to 60% when I woke up at 7 this morning.
I haven't rooted or flashed or anything like that, because as I said, I'm an Android virgin. I have location settings off, only Gmail syncing and the usual push notifications here and there. Nothing too fancy or strenuous.
Any help on how I can go around fixing this? I'm a little afraid to rooting/flashing/ROMs etc, because I've no clue what works best.
Cheers!
If your saying you left the screen on over night, meaning the phone never went into deep sleep.. If you slept for let's say 6 hours and the phones screen was on for that whole time it's normal that it went down to sixty percent battery.
Maybe I'm understanding your post wrong? Btw I cannot see the picture you posted.

Turn off mobile data and lower the screen brightness to 0 during the day. Also disable WiFi when you're sleeping. I also make sure all apps are closed using the app manager button on the far right.

This is NOT the answer. His battery in the image has dropped 7%. If he hasn't used the screen much it is perfectly understandable that screen might not be a large percentage of that 7%. As he uses the phone more screen will use a larger percentage of his battery and Android OS will use less.
If he gets to the point where the screen is on for an hour or two and the percentages are still like this then yes there is a problem.

Actually No the "Screen" should not always be at the top of the stat list. If you use the phone more than it idles, then yes... but if you are like me, mine says "Phone Idle: 20%" (which is on top) and "Screen" is 4th on the list with 12% (Wi-Fi and Cell standby above it) [this is my personal phone, and I mostly use my work phone. hence the high Idle & standby]
I was having an issue with my phone running out of battery, with very little usage from it. I mean very little, I might make 2 calls from it each day, and respond to an email now and then. I found that an App was preventing my Screen from going into "Deep Sleep" or even "Sleeping" possibly. So I uninstalled all apps (well I only had like 4 additional apps installed), except for 2 that I need (Google Voice & Drive). Powered off the phone, charged it fully, then powered back on. Its been running on the same charge for 24+hrs now and reads 68% battery remaining.
So check the apps you have installed, some use background data, and might be causing problems...

See now it is much easier to see that you actually do have a problem and what it is. You have the wakelock problem as you can see from Better Battery Stats which falls under Android OS on the other screen. It also appears that you have somewhat weak signal which could cause the wakelock to drain battery even more. There's not much you can do about that wake lock, some kernels have patches for it but those have their own issues as well.

Could I just install any kernel on stock android and be OK with it? As I've said I've no idea what's best for me; just something nice and clean that doesn't have issues like this. I live onsite where I work so my WiFi is pretty much on all the time if that helps in anyway whatsoever
I'm gonna let it run down completely tonight and charge it, but I don't expect it to help much.

The battery on the n4 seems horrible.
I'm completely stock I just got my phone yesterday, I charged it to 100% now its at 64% battery with only 47 minutes of screen on time.
on the s3 I would be around 83% with 47 minutes of screen on time.
I'm gonna unlock the boot loader and root soon and try Franco kernel I've been reading good things about it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The battery life on the stock kernel isn't great because the CPU management isn't optimized well. It ramps up the CPU (frequency, number of active cores...) very easily and keeps it there long, which removes the occasional lag but sucks more battery. Flashing a more battery friendly kernel would definitely help you if that is the root of your battery issues and not a badly coded app.
Franco's kernel is a very popular one, and very battery friendly compared to stock (and that doesn't mean you lose performance). It is the one I'm currently using. Most people report of screen on times of 4 or 5 hours. With not so heavy usage and wifi (not 3g) I can also pass 5 hrs.
To install a kernel you need to unlock your boot loader and install a custom recovery. No need to root, but.. why not since you're at it
You can try different kernels with the stock ROM. You don't necessarily need a custom ROM. Just be careful to read the dev's OP and instructions, and definitely not to flash a kernel for another device.
Also another thing that reduces battery is your mobile data, if there are a lot of programs that sync on the background. You can use a program that turns off your mobile data when your screen is off and switch it back on just for a sync every xx minutes. Juice Defender is such app, though I like to use Tasker for that. If you use Tasker and are interested in that project, ask or send me a pm. It works great.
So, I've been running the Milestone release of AOKP for a while and while it's been generally stable, I seem to be having an an issue with reboots when I don't use the tablet for a while. Maybe.
Once maybe every few days, if it's been sitting for a while (or charging), when I unlock, all of my recent apps have been cleared. The stock battery info doesn't indicate any downtime, but GSAM battery monitor will indicate a reboot.
I've seen this on both KToon and Franco's most recent kernels.
Anybody else? Any ideas?
Thanks!

I'd guess OP is seeing 'surface flinger RAM shell reboot' that's talked about often.
I'd guess europizza has a unit that is having a battery/motherboard/"power" related issue.
Why? - Based on reading these and other N10 help forums for the last 6 months.

While I have had the SOD with AOKP and Franco/KToon kernels, what I'm talking about isn't the tablet not waking up. It's that it's rebooting while charging or not being used for extended periods of time. (But I haven't had any SOD issues with the latest version of either of those kernels, btw.)

I'd guess calbruc has a unit that is having a battery/motherboard/"power" related issue.
Why? - Based on reading these and other N10 help forums for the last 6 months.

Ah, thanks. I've seen talk of this surface flinger business before, but never really knew what it was referring to. Haven't researched it much yet, but it sounds like something I'll just have to deal with for now.
Thanks again.

My phone gets down to 70% after less than 2 hours. It used to take probably like 3 or 4 hours to get to 70%. But I've also looked at the battery status and it says "Android Core Apps" has used 33% after an hour and 47 minutes on the battery. Look at the screenshot I attached. Please help?!

I haven't had the core apps problem, but I've had play services drain my battery extremely fast. I signed out of my accounts and then readded them. It helped me before maybe it would help you.
Also did you do a dirty flash?

Idk if I wiped cache and dalvic but no I didn't restore anything from tb I restored apps from kies because I got the mf9 update from kies.
I wpuld suggest Backup your apps/data using mybackup. Redownload ROM, go into recovery, wipe /data /cache /dalvic, reflash, and restore apps (apks w/o data I get FCS fro, apk+data) and data. Should fix your battery problem.

I say go odin back to stock mf9 and check whether your phone still gets hot or anything and to let your battery sink in for awhile then root and install your rom. Before doing this back up apps and internal memory since it will wipe it clean.

Okay, and I also forgot to mention when I hold down the home button and it shows recent apps, there's some weird thing called "MIPerractivity" or something like that. I have no idea what that is..

Having the same problem here.
Any help appreciated.
Same, MF9 update from MDL stock, unrooted
I'm having the same issue (coming from MDL stock, unrooted).
Is it the ROM? Is it Google Play? I'm not sure anymore, but i'm severely annoyed.
I had this problem until
I was experiencing the same issue on my phone. note I'm stock and not rooted. Until I updated the samsung apps.
For some reason the samsung app store had an update and was constantly waking my phone for the update, but because I had never agreed to the TOS(becuase I never opened the app) it wouldn't update resulting in battery drain.
I stumbled on the answer in a forum in regards to the G Note II. I was skeptical as to why it wouldn;t show the samsung app as being the culprit(something about using the google services core functions to update), but I know that it worked.
I'm sure an experienced dev can better explain why it shows as android os and not the Samsung app causing the drain.
If you already removed/froze those apps though I suppose you have a different issue.

Just did that and I never opened the "Samsung Apps" app too and just got the update. Hopefully this will fix it (Google Play services drain). Thanks man!
Shut down
Battery out for 30 secs
Restart
Worked for me
You could try a different kernel too. I use AGAT's Kernel. That kernel gives me SO much more battery juice.
