[Q] Site logins - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Evening All
Having a issue with a stock Nexus 7... When i try to log into a website ie. Amazon, Vodafone and a few others it refuse to log in to the page! All Google associated apps work perfectly fine, I'm though it may be a problem with secure sites but can gain access to my banking perfectly fine.. Have done a factory reset and the problem still persists. Can this be fixed or should i get on the blower to Google?
Thanks in advance
spong_miester

Try a different browser. Some sites don't play well with some browsers. Some sites I use can only be used properly on my laptop actually.

Either try opening the options in chrome and check "request desktop site", or if that does not work, download another browser like boat which allows you to change the user agent.

You are returning a device cause it won't log in to a website?
There is nothing wrong with the device! LOL. Its the websites. Or as said, browsers. I'd make up a story when you return it then.....dont tell them the truth!

Then obviously its not the tab.
It doesn't know what kind of connection you have, only that you have one. So it must be an isp issue if the sites worked at a different location.
You may have to live with it, or call your ISP. Do the sites work on your phone?
She'll be quite disappointed if you exchange and the issue remains.
Again, if you've tried different browsers, and it is all the same....then it isn't the browser, and it cannot possibly be your hardware.

The connection is TalkTalk Fibre and yes the sites work fine on all other devices (Lumia 800, Xperia S, PS Vita, and even 3DS!) so god knows what it is!

Well, exchange of you can and want to. Just don't be surprised to see same thing happen. Unless you accidentally did something very strange to tab to cause the issues.
Good luck!

Web browser bug?

I'm having a problem with the web browser.
Basically it keeps closing when I click on a link. Example, right here on the XDA forum when I click on one of the threads the web browser just shuts down & returns to the home screen. I had it just a day & took it back to the shop & they swapped for a brand new one.
Got home tried the web browser & it did exactly the same. I've not loaded any apps its straight out of the box, set up wifi & fire up the web browser.
Also I changed the UA string to desktop but it doesn't work either. Got no problems with my HTC Desire or the Dell Streak.
Any others having the same problem. Looks like I might have to return it again tomorrow.
I have experienced this too a couple of times. I found deleting cache data and cookies then also disabling plugins in browser settings seemed to fix this. Not a major issue.

Same here.
Strangely enough it only happened here at xda-devs but doing as you say cleared the issue and it's been right as rain ever since.
What does disabling plugins do? Does it stop flash from working? And how about the UA string, why won't it stay in desktop mode?
Thanks
As far as i can tell disabling plugins doesn't appear to do very much. I noticed YouTube videos will stop playing in the web browser (but will play in YouTube app perfectly fine) and that's about all. Flash support in this version of the browser is so minimal that it is barely worth having or switching on.
I have no idea about the UA string.
i had that problem on a nexus turned off my locations by wifi in settings and worked fine.
OK I've returned the phone for full refund at the shop I bought it from. I'm going to give the Galaxy S a final chance though as I will buy another from a different shop. I'm thinking it could be due to fact that the previous shop stock was from a dodgy batch of phones.
I think you'll be disappointed, sounds more like a software issue than a hardware one and I cant believe a batch of phones had a software flash go wrong like that. What id like to know is if this is just a Galaxy S thing or not? As I thought it was the same browser on all eclair phones.
I have a HTC Desire aswell. The web browser on the Desire doesn't have any of the issues I'm seeing with the Galaxy S. The problem I have with the Desire though is the external speaker volume is too low & tinny, but most significant is the pink tint when on the lowest brightness setting (I use the phone a lot in dark conditions). In saying that I noticed that the Galaxy lowest brightness setting is still much brighter than the Desire.

If you want to try out a good browser, then try Dolphin HD.
Very quick, slick and does have some nice features.

In what way?
I'm using it over the default browser and love it.
Ok, my browser (both the default one and Dolphin HD) shuts down randomly back to the main screen. Usually it's preceded by a single vibration, followed by three quick vibrations before it happens. This happens regardless of what website I am on.
I didn't have this issue at all on 2.1, and to be honest I really wish I hadn't bothered updating the phone as sites loaded and ran quicker on 2.1. Wondering if you guys have any ideas.
My baseband is I9000XXJPM
Build is FROYO.XWJP6
Oh and, I'm running RyanZA's OneClickLagFix 2.2+

The vibration pattern you mention are indicative to a Force Close procedure.
Clearly something is interfering with the Internet App.
What happens after a reboot?
It's the same after a reboot. I rebooted it this morning before coming into work. Later in the morning I was on the internet on my phone and the same thing happened.
edit: I upgraded via the reg-hack to force Kies to give me the update. The JPM firmware is onlly for nordic regions, I'm wondering if maybe the proper European firmware will solve the problem...

I would say it looks quite good that you have a problem with the ROM.
I would put the correct ROM on your SGS and if Kies is problematic use Odin.
There is a great information link on how to use Odin to upgrade a ROM at How to use Odin to Upgrade the SGS to Froyo.
I used it and it worked a breeze.

Dolphin, skyfire (i really hate this over hyped crappy product) uses stock browser engine. So, on froyo they perform as the default browser. Browser on froyo sucks badly. I browse quite often and got a few fc (vibrates.. phone unusable for seconds, that happen when an app FC in official froyo) or simply self close. Plus how much resources eats (cpu + mem).. simply pathetic. Eclair browser performance was way better..

That's just your opinion and you are quite entitled to it especially if you are experiencing the problems you mention.
Mine however performs without a hitch. It's quick, reliable and does exactly that as I ask of it.

[Q] Any way to browse without it being seen as mobile device?

Any way to make it happen? A lot of people he websites i've tried are giving me the mobile site and it's getting on my nerves.
Thanks

Unfortunately, you will have to do this after each reboot of the device. This has been an issue from the earliest versions of Android and Google seem to be incapable of finding a solution to what on the face of it seems to be a relatively simple problem.

Dolphin Pad seems to be a bit better about remembering this...although some sites still insist on loading the mobile versions, at least it seems to remember the setting once it's set. It's a good browser anyway, I keep going back and forth between the normal browser and it, can't decide which one I like better. Both are good.

What are you talking about? I set defalt browser to desktop a month ago and it still shows as desktop.
That's not the same thing - that just renders in desktop mode. Sites can (and some still) redirect you to an m. version. The difference being major HTML/CSS /JS(Q) etc. Optimization for mobile browsing is still a concern for a lot of Web developers.
You can set to render Desktop but the sites that check mostly doesn't care what you have it set at. If you don't meet its criteria for a Desktop browser they will redirect you to a m. version (IF they have that functionality in place - not all sites do)
EDIT***
I'd also like to add that the the UserAgent setting not being permanent is in all likelihood a Honeycomb bug. Nobody can get it to stick using the stock browser however it works flawlessly on 2.x OS versions.
I just went into the browser settings, under advanced, changed to desktop and I don't get the mobile sites anymore.

Same Here.
I just type about:debug and change the string to desktop. You need to do it every reboot but it is true desktop.

[Q] Unable to access internet with hotspots that require browser action

I have a Nook Simple Touch rooted with the latest Nooter and one issue Im running into is connecting to hotspots that require some kind of browser action to connect to the internet (e.g. hotels/airport that require login or simply "I agree").
After connecting to the hotspot Ive tried Opera mobile and the stock browser but just get a page cannot be found rather then being redirected to the access page.
Anyone have thoughts on how to get this working?
Thanks!
I do usually get redirected when opening Opera Mobile. I know this isn't an answer, but what you're experiencing doesn't seem to be the norm.
Does this happen at all such hotspots, or just a select few?

Honestly, I've only tried this once so far at Logan Airport today, but en route to a hotel for the week so will check again there and report back.
I have Opera defaulting to the "my opera" page, are you saying you automatically get redirected the moment you open Opera or after you try to go to a website?

Ah, LOGAN! I wish you'd mentioned that up front. Logan is an antiquated hell hole that should be condemned. I fly into and out of it several times per month. Their wifi setup is no better, apparently set up by the same clowns that did the signage in Central Parking. Nothing is obvious, and many things are hidden.
I often can't connect at all using Linux. If I fire up Windows, MSIE allows me to connect. They make you watch a BMW commercial or take a survey to access wifi once you find the right stupid button to click. Even then, it barely works.
It's the Logan Lottery. Good luck getting your bags quickly. Good luck with parking. And hope like hell the tunnel doesn't collapse again.
I think you'll find that most post-1990 wifi installations can be dealt with using Opera Mobile just fine. Give up in the Twilight Zone.
Ha! Well good to know. Hopefully Ill have better luck elsewhere. Ill be sure to post back results.
Thanks again!

[Q] Is anyone else having problems with google search

When I go into Google now on my nex7 everything works fine except for the Google search web results. It brings up cards and has voice response but brings up no web results. I wiped everything did a reset and flashed a different ROM and still having the same problem. Everything else on my tablet works fine. I'm beggining to think it may be a Google server problem in my area. Is anyone else having this problem?

Oooh - you too huh?!
If you are referencing the Google Search bar @ the top of each screen - my web searches are just hanging with no results also.
It does bring back personalized cards like you said & if I select the [image] tab @ the bottom it will bring back images from the web...but everything else is hanging....
Same here. When I type in to the search bar, it hangs. I can search using the browser. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling - did not fix. I am not rooted.

Really? I thought it's been a good roll-out for 4.1.2 JB.
Just this hickup & the usual lack of detailed usage training for end-users (which we actually embrace now as XDA-ers!)
Surprise, surprise. I'm having that issue also. Search on my N7 is giving me factual voice responses to a search like '50 milliliters in ounces', but if I say '2010 World Series' expecting to get webpage responses, I get the spinning circle. My Bionic returns webpages for these searches. I'm sure they'll get it sorted out, but kind of annoying at the moment.
Same with me. Changing from google.de to google.com did not work.
Disconnecting Wlan and connecting again and I can search once ...
I thought it was my fault
ok, well at least I know I'm not the only one. Hope they get it worked out soon.

Google services went down for 15 WHOLE minutes yesterday. That's a hiccup we don't usually see.
That's not too bad, but this issue still exists and it has been a lot longer than 15 minutes.
Same problem on phone and tablet. About 30 seconds later my search results show up.
Looks like they are aware of it: per Kousha N.

I just got home from work and Google search and Google now seem to be working fine now. Just did about 20 random voice searches in a row and had no hang ups what so ever. I didn't change anything on my tablet or in settings so obviously a problem with Google that is worked out for now.

Nexus 10 crashing regularly

Hey,
is anybody experiencing this, too? My Nexus 10 crashes pretty often, received it last Thursday evening and until today (Monday evening) it has crashed 4 times so far... (crash = complete freeze, I can only press the power button for a long time and wait for it to restart). Happens mostly when many apps are running, and 3 of 4 times happened when opening the Chrome browser...
Does that happen to you, too?

seriously, even after following the tips from the other thread (i never had HD Widgets installed and i disabled the google currents auto sync) it crashes, 3 times today, and 2 times yesterday. i didnt pay 400 bucks for a broken tablet, so i would like to return it or get a refund or replacement, or whatever... but the google customer support isnt working.
i went here: support. google. com/ googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2411741&topic=2453057&ctx=topic#DE
(country selection: germany)
clicked: Please contact our support team by email to return your device.
then: Email us (since i dont want to check shipping status and dont want to cancel my order)
then selected: I received a damaged device and need a replacement (or have other warranty-related questions)
and then there is just a blank page with no email adress, support form, etc... (see the attached screenshot).
do you know how to reach the customer support? i would call them but there is no telephone number either. google really screwed up big time here, first the ordering, then the shipping, then the device and in the end even the support -.-

I also changed to Firefox and deleted Facebook, so let's hope that solves the problem. Would be great to have a perfectly working Nexus, and it would signal a pretty poor performance at the Google HQ for programming an OS that can be easily crashed by a normal app from the Play Store (not some jailbreaked cracked virus app stuff).

I was having a couple of crashes a day and stopped using Chrome after seeing that given as a possible fix. I'm now using Boat Browser (three days) and thus far, have not had a single crash. I like Boat, although I'd like it more if it kept my tabs when I turn the Nexus on after sleep...
