[Q] Unable to access internet with hotspots that require browser action - Nook Touch General

I have a Nook Simple Touch rooted with the latest Nooter and one issue Im running into is connecting to hotspots that require some kind of browser action to connect to the internet (e.g. hotels/airport that require login or simply "I agree").
After connecting to the hotspot Ive tried Opera mobile and the stock browser but just get a page cannot be found rather then being redirected to the access page.
Anyone have thoughts on how to get this working?
Thanks!

I do usually get redirected when opening Opera Mobile. I know this isn't an answer, but what you're experiencing doesn't seem to be the norm.
Does this happen at all such hotspots, or just a select few?

Honestly, I've only tried this once so far at Logan Airport today, but en route to a hotel for the week so will check again there and report back.
I have Opera defaulting to the "my opera" page, are you saying you automatically get redirected the moment you open Opera or after you try to go to a website?

Ah, LOGAN! I wish you'd mentioned that up front. Logan is an antiquated hell hole that should be condemned. I fly into and out of it several times per month. Their wifi setup is no better, apparently set up by the same clowns that did the signage in Central Parking. Nothing is obvious, and many things are hidden.
I often can't connect at all using Linux. If I fire up Windows, MSIE allows me to connect. They make you watch a BMW commercial or take a survey to access wifi once you find the right stupid button to click. Even then, it barely works.
It's the Logan Lottery. Good luck getting your bags quickly. Good luck with parking. And hope like hell the tunnel doesn't collapse again.
I think you'll find that most post-1990 wifi installations can be dealt with using Opera Mobile just fine. Give up in the Twilight Zone.

Ha! Well good to know. Hopefully Ill have better luck elsewhere. Ill be sure to post back results.
Thanks again!

Even if the cab was released, I'm pretty sure it checks your phone number anyway, considering the way the browser works is completely server side.
Here is your cab and all I did was use the search function... You should try it!!!! 10th tab from the left and 3rd from the right!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378549
As mentioned above, you need to be registered for the beta and they are the ones that allow you to use it.
i'm near fed up with the skyfire beta.
i signed up January 28 (day ONE!) at about 3pm, and still have not receieved an invitation to the beta. They claim to be going first-come, first-serve, but if that's the case, a hell-of-a-lot of people signed up within hours of hearing about it.
They just sent me an update email, saying they'll try to get everyone in Beta 1 by the end of April.
Also, I see no reason to be fed up, considering they're providing you this service. They don't actually owe you anything, let's remember.

ummmm...... yea what he say
he really does have a point tho
Ive had the software for a little over 2 weeks now and unfortunetely im extremely unimpressed. The software is incredibly slow on my mogul. The only plus side I have to using this software is to watch you tube videos which Core Player already does in a much easier to usse interface. I'll get back to it once Beta 2 rolls around.
i also signed up on the first day and just got invited to use it a few days ago. i wouldn't worry too much, as mentioned before its really not that good. picture this... remote desktop on someone elses server, with sound, thats it. Its no opera mini, but its coming along slowly. Honestly its really not worth waiting for until version 1.0, and their on .5 still.
I got my invite about a week ago. And btw, i am from Finland. So they now allow non-us people too.
I love it. It's slow to browse but:
- Internet map-services work! A local one has sharper satellite pictures
- I can wach CNETTV.com! Picture isnt that good but audio comes always clear. (it also saves the zoom location on bookmarks. So i just click the bookmark and watch)
- Internet radio stations work! The ones that are flash. (like http://www.finetune.com/wii/ )
- I noticed that it also has atleast .wmv plugin installed on the server-side. So you can play direct-video links too.
I've had it for about 2 weeks, and I think it definitely will be the best browser when all the bugs are worked out. It can render basically any page on the internet perfectly. If you go to Youtube, for instance, it looks as if you went there in IE or Firefox on your regular computer. All of the flash stuff works. Google maps? Yes, you can use street view mode, and it's pretty snappy too.
It has two modes for touch input, which I will call cursor mode and hand mode (that's what the icons look like). This way, you can decide if you want to pan the entire webpage with hand mode or if you want to interact directly with a zoomed in flash applet with the cursor mode.
I signed up for the beta a few months back.

More ranting about Skyfire found here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378549
Over at this 31 page thread, you can gauge your sign up times with other users, and guess where you are on the list. Skyfire is just going in order of people who signed up, and it looks like they are still sending out invites to people who signed up on the first day still, jan 28th!
There is more info throughout

yes i have it and you cant get it ...j/k.....its a good browser but I have some reservations..one security....logging into sites that require passwds is not recommeneded with the browser as it is not secure....and the whole video thing is cool but its like logging into my pc using logmein and watching video...choppy....but I think the will improve on it...my 2 cents
my new iconset is out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378260

Proxy for Wifi

Hi Guys,
Did a search on this and it appears WIFI Proxy's arn't available on the Hero which is damn annoying!
Any ideas when this might be available, I did find an app that might work but sadly didn't, it was on some google page somewhere! Doh!
anyone able to either point to another app, or know when this might get fixed!
Rich
Nope... Android doesn't support proxys over wifi at all.
Whilst Android does have a "HTTP Proxy" setting hidden away (the app you got modifys this setting) the only app that could use it was the web browser, but as of Android 1.5... Google in there infinate wisdom stopped or broke even that.
And I don't expect Google to add it any time soon... like most things that are basic fundamental settings that should have been in Android since day one (it was in development for years before it was announced wasn't it?) .
Its damn annoying!!! Can't use it at work at all..........really annoying...hope its fixed soon or someone builds an app!
Thanks for your response

Not sure what the problem could be but have you tried myPlayer? This gives access to a few UK channels such as bbc 1/2 itv etc. You can pay to get more but the free version is pretty well featured.

I have but with TV catchup you can watch a good few channels inc my fav sky sports news for free, ive played around and still cant seem to get it sorted, hoping someone here can be of assistance
how are you trying to watch it? with skyfire?
if its skyfire, try deleting the prefs file and soft rest. it should say server 100. for uk but sometimes thinks your in the us (served 110.). if it keeps happening try reinstalling.
hope it helps
myplayer is damn good though
Tried disabling the proxy in advanced networking?
are you using a version of opera that is using speed booster or something? cos if you are the speed settings on some versions of opera (mine doesnt so i cant tell you specific menus to look at, or which versions, i just know this is what can happen) the data is routed through their servers, which i think are in norway or somewhere, so regional specific websites see the wrong source. You get teh same effect on bbc iplayer.
I had the same problem I got this off their forums and it worked for me.
uninstall skyfire.
reinstall and make sure you are conected to your local WiFi after that it will reconise you as uk based.

[Q] Things I miss from stock...

I'm happily running CM7 from SD on my NC, but stock NC had a few things that I miss:
Power-level popups when plugging in or out.
WiFi login help: when connecting, it tests for redirection and offers to forget or pop up the service's login page. This really helps at hotels and on commuter rail.
Magazine subscriptions, but I know that's being worked on.
Anybody got pointers to any of these?
Thanks!
There are a whole bunch of battery widgets that will give you power level at a glance.
As far as magazines go, it's not as complete as the native BN capability, but Zinio can be made to work. Do a search here for "WORKING Zinio on CM7"
I've got a couple of functional subscriptions working.
It's a workaround, but if you go to Settings | Wireless & Networks | Wi-Fi settings you can select any network in range, forget previous or current networks, or manually add networks that don't advertise. Its not automated, but it's pretty straightforward.

I'll have a look! I was hoping to use BN, to reward them for producing a cheap tablet, but they're not making it easy.

It's not that it doesn't see the access point or connect to it. When it connects, it checks and notices that you don't get full access until you log in (room number, good behavior button, whatever) and pops up the access point's login page. Pretty slick, actually.

That is a pretty slick feature. I'll have to take a look through the market and see if there's anything like that.

Found one! It's called "WiFiBrowserLogin" and I've used it now on the train and on a closed portal network here at work. Seems to work fine. It pops up a browser window with the clickthrough page and off we go.
Thanks for the update. And I'm sure you are aware magazines can now be read through the nook app.

You betcha! I even renewed a lapsed subscription, and will do more Of course, I have to get the issues I missed from eReader.com, too bad they're not better integrated, given that they've been under common ownership for years now.

[Q] Site logins

Evening All
Having a issue with a stock Nexus 7... When i try to log into a website ie. Amazon, Vodafone and a few others it refuse to log in to the page! All Google associated apps work perfectly fine, I'm though it may be a problem with secure sites but can gain access to my banking perfectly fine.. Have done a factory reset and the problem still persists. Can this be fixed or should i get on the blower to Google?
Thanks in advance
spong_miester
Try a different browser. Some sites don't play well with some browsers. Some sites I use can only be used properly on my laptop actually.

Either try opening the options in chrome and check "request desktop site", or if that does not work, download another browser like boat which allows you to change the user agent.

You are returning a device cause it won't log in to a website?
There is nothing wrong with the device! LOL. Its the websites. Or as said, browsers. I'd make up a story when you return it then.....dont tell them the truth!

Then obviously its not the tab.
It doesn't know what kind of connection you have, only that you have one. So it must be an isp issue if the sites worked at a different location.
You may have to live with it, or call your ISP. Do the sites work on your phone?
She'll be quite disappointed if you exchange and the issue remains.
Again, if you've tried different browsers, and it is all the same....then it isn't the browser, and it cannot possibly be your hardware.

The connection is TalkTalk Fibre and yes the sites work fine on all other devices (Lumia 800, Xperia S, PS Vita, and even 3DS!) so god knows what it is!
Well, exchange of you can and want to. Just don't be surprised to see same thing happen. Unless you accidentally did something very strange to tab to cause the issues.
Good luck!
