Battery percentage while using the phone - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
hope this question wasn't asked already, I searched for it and found nothing, anyway.
So, I'd like to know, when you're using your phone normally (browsing, texting), how many minutes does it take for 1% to drop? of course, I mean while screen is on.
I would appreciate if you also wrote which rom and kernel you're using. Also, what governor is being used, whether sync, Google now And location are on.
I'm currently using Slim + Semaphore (always switching governors), sync, GN, location and WIFI and under those conditions, 1% drops after 2-3 minutes.
Many people report hanging a great battery life, with 4-6 SOT and I just don't understand how it's possible. For comparison, I'm currently on 44% with 1 hour and 18 minutes SOT.
Please no flaming and such, I really want others to contribute to this discussion rather than hear something like "RMA your phone" and such.
Thank you.

It depends how you use your phone. I don't use facebook, i dont sync twitter or g+. I rarely use location services. The only things cause wake locks are whatsapp and hangouts for me. Then, I get 20 hours with 4 hours sot on wifi 2.5 to 3 hour on 3g. If i don't play any games i can get 5 to 6 hours sot (i don't know what can i do for 5 hours without playing games). It's not important in how many minutes 1% drain occurs. Sometimes 2% drain in 2 minutes sometimes no drain in 10 minutes. If you minimize your idle drain for your usage like get rid of unnecessary apps and greenify the apps have unnecessary notifications you can have 4 hours sot with browsing, twitter, xda, messaging and playing not heavy games.
I use latest nightlies of pa and franco all the time.

Yeah, I know, but I thought maybe something is wrong with my phone. Any other comments?

I get 6 hours of SOT when strictly web browsing. From what I have seen, this is about par for being stock. I don't use any battery saving apps.

[Q] How is the battery performance?

Hi,
I'm switching from Note 1 to Nexus 4 which should arrive this week. I wonder what the battery performance is like for an average user, does it last alteast a day (10hrs plus) with moderate usage?
Also, I heard glass back issues, does it really needs to be cared for a lot?
I just switched from the note 1 also to the nexus 4. Have had this phone for almost 2 weeks now. Battery life is a lot better than the note. I'm almost always on WiFi. I'm getting about 13+ hours out of the battery. I flashed the Franco kernel and noticed a slight improvement also. Deff a lot better battery life than the note

Battery life is awesome.
I get about five hours screen on time
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Right now I'm using the CM nightlities and franco r71 kernel and my battery is pretty good. It easily lasts a day, right now it has about 50% battery with about 10 hours on and 1hr 40min screen time on. I've uploaded a picture of my battery with one of the older nightlies. But some people have really good battery life and others aren't as good, it just depends if you get a lucky phone.
Battery live has been great for me. Easily over 3:30 on-screen time, sometimes 4:00, and less often I hit 4:30. At the end of the day and I usually still have some juice left. I use FrankenKernel and Trinity Four.

Battery life is subjective.

I can get at least four hours screen on time, sometimes over five, depending on other factors such as signal strength and whether I'm on WiFi or mobile networks.
Just been playing with it for the last hour and this is what it's looking like ... 84‰ battery remaining with one hour eleven minutes of screen time. Connection via mobile networks is usually more taxing though.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Stock I could go ~12hrs with moderate use and ~18hrs with light use.
With franco kernel r72, I get 2days with light usage (1.5hrs screen on, 1.5hrs call time, auto brightness, wifi on, bt on, gps on, location services on, push for gmail/plume) and a day with moderate use (same as previous with 3-4hrs of pandora streaming and 1hr of video.)
I can reach 2 hours of screen time when entirely on HSDPA or nearly 4 hours entirely on Wifi with stock kernel until the battery hits 25% mark.
With franco or harsh kernel I can reach 2 hours 30 minutes on HSDPA and 4 hours on Wifi until the battery hits 25% mark.
I send a lot of Whatsapp messages and browsing, not much phone call though. I don't measure battery life by phone up time because most of the time it's screen on time that matters.
Battery life seems great for me

[Q] What am I doing wrong? (N4 Battery Life)

I've had this phone for around week (off craigslist so it's been broken in) and I can't seem to get any sort of good battery life from this device. I mean yeah it's ok, max I've gotten is 2.5 hours sot with 10-12 hr standby.
This screen is from today so far. I'm already down to 40% and not even at 2 hrs sot yet. What's going on? I've tried Franco's kernel, fauxs kernel, and now I'm on matr1x kernel. (all with undervolting) I've tried carbon, stock, and now I'm on rasenjb.
I don't think I'll ever get to these 5 and 6 hour sot times with a day and a half of standby everyone is getting.. I bought this device because of how good the battery life I saw everyone was getting and it's been a big disappointment so far. I've tried almost everything and that's why I made this thread. Does anyone have any suggestions?
That's because everyone liked to install custom kernels, underclock, never use their phone like a normal phone and then claim 5 hours SOT which is total BS.
Expect 10-12 hours with 3 hours SOT, that's normal. I've gotten way better than that but only when connected to Wifi and almost no actual phone calls. Anytime you're on the cellular network expect 10-12 hours tops

I've seen a lot of screen shots with 4hrs + though. I guess it's only achievable on WiFi. I'm on HSPA+ for 8 hours of the day and then I come home and there's WiFi. So I'm guessing data is draining my battery throughout the day like a hog. Maybe I'll try out that screen off 2G mod that I saw. Thanks for your input!

6 hours+ sot easy....
google now off
low brightness
nfc etc off (go through all settings and turn all unecessary crap off)
double check settings/google/accountname.gmail .. make sure music sync is off/unticked
use wifi only or 2g if you must (set 2g only anyway even when on wifi, stops the phone switching towers all the time)
use custom kernel and undervolt (optional) ..most come standard with a bit of undevolt already
don't have lots of apps syncing all the time.. facebook ect
use aosp browser or similar and not chrome
don't use live wallpapers
don't play heavy games , use mostly for messaging and browsing

Don't be hating because you are in a poor signal area. I get 6hrs sot on wifi and at least 4hrs on hspa+. If you are in an area that is a weaker signal, like 3g and edge with only one bar, sot will be less. I am stock rooted, including kernel. If a person doesn't use the phone the battery will last a long time, but the sot will also be low. For example, 24hrs of battery life with only one hour of sot pretty much means the phone was just laying there and barely used. On the other hand, 10hrs of battery life with 5hrs of screen time means the phone was used much and faired good. Apart from sot, cell signal is the biggest battery drainer. When I go to my sis-in-laws, which is a very weak area, my battery steadily drains with my phone just in my pocket. *edit* I should also note, when at home on wifi, I'm also on my Microcell, so I always have a strong signal.

I usually get between 2.5 and 3.5 hours screen on time. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. You can use better battery stats to diagnose and try to kill unnecessary wakelocks. And yes you can under clock and sacrifice functionality, but rest assured 5-6 hours sot is not typical, even if some people can achieve it on a regular basis.

Are you referring to me? Lying about what? You don't think I can get 6hrs sot on wifi and my microcell. You don't think I can get 4hrs sot on mobile data cellular signal? Those figures are fairly common and I have posted screen shots before. Or maybe you don't believe that a poor signal will drain battery more? Do some research. http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?p=2817363

Signal
Yeah! Its true. Poor signal make your phone drain more battery.
If in your carrier the 2G signal is better than 3G. Set the phone to use only 2G network. (GSM)
Put this in the phone app: *#*#4636#*#* and see the difference.

You're not talking about real world usage. Nobody uses their phone like that. It's people like you that come into threads where regular users with genuine concerns and questions get ridiculed by some guy who has his "phone" set up like some friggin science project talking about 5-6 hours SOT.
Google Search: Nexus 4 poor battery life
About 12,600,000 results (0.19 seconds)
Google Search: Galaxy S3 poor battery life
About 6,310,000 results(0.24 seconds)
^that's half of the results and the S3 has been out way longer with millions more users/owners
Obviously the Nexus 4 has a sub-par battery for today's standards. Case closed.
I answered his question with real life facts, and you're in here spinning fairy tales feeding a delusion that he can go about using his phone like a normal person and get 5-6 hours SOT.
So yeah, you're lying IMO.
Having a poor signal doesn't cut SOT by 4 hours.
Yes, I forget, I'm not using my phone in the real world when I'm working on my science project. Lol. Sorry buddy, but I did unlock my bootloader and root in order to transfer app data from my previous phone, but I am running the stock rom, even odexed version, and stock kernel. I have syncing, nfc, wifi, and gps always enabled. The only thing I don't keep on is Google Now because I don't use it. If you bothered to look closely at the screen shots, you would see the constant strong signal due to my Microcell. When on a weaker cellular signal, it cuts into my sot. I use a Microcell because without it, I get a really crummy signal, so I know firsthand what battery drain is like. And as I stated, on cellular only, I get 4-5hrs screen time, worse if I'm in a really poor location. Idk where you get this 4hr difference from.

I usually get around 3.5 - 4 on Franco m2 and carbon Rom browsing the internet on WiFi. No other weird settings, all sync on. It's closer to about 3 doing the same on mobile data. Playing games will toast my battery. I'm still plenty satisfied with my battery life.

I uninstalled facebook. Also Google maps, Google search and most of the other common battery drainers are on greenify. I've come to the conclusion that my mobile data radio is the biggest drainer. Would upgrading my radio offer a more efficient battery life? (I've never upgraded a radio on any of my devices before)

It probably is low signal strength killing your battery, I should have thrown in the fact that 90% of the time I have full signal. Flashing a radio is no biggie, just dont be stupid about it and kill power halfway through the flash. No need to wipe anything either. I think i saw some recovery flashable ones around here, but i like to use fastboot whenever possible. .48 is the latest official radio, with .54 coming from an international white n4. I'm on .48 and holding off until .54 becomes official before deciding to test it out, since .48 is golden for me. Test all of them, older doesnt mean worse and some people have better luck with the older radios.
It may not be relevant to your experience, but I was disappointed initially in N4's battery life too. Even after dialing down most automatic syncing, being very conservative with screen brightness, and other standard measures.
I installed wake lock detector. In my case, Dropbox was at the top of the list, with an inordinate # of system wake ups.
Turned out a copy of Dropbox on another machine on the same network was, with the 'LAN Sync' option enabled by default, sending out gobs of wake-on-lan packets and was waking up the N4 very often; something that would happen even without Dropbox on the N4, presumably.
Disabling Dropbox's LAN sync seemed to bump my battery life ~20-30%.
Google told me 10 - 12 hours continuous useage. I haven't had anything like that from mine.

Very disappointed with the S4 Battery Life

I'm currently on deadly venom v 8.2 on mf3. I only get 2-3hrs screen time w this device. I already greenified all everything connected to Google like maps, services, search, etc. I hate the fact that you even have to do that just to maximize battery life. I don't like turning on and off stuffs like location services, blue tooth, and wifi. I always leave them on. I hate the fact that you need to lower the brightness or readjust the brightness again and again just to increase battery life. That's a no no! I have bad eyes, I use lux dash as my auto brightness. I don't have any background widgets on my phone. My home screen is just filled w apps (no widgets) because they say widgets eat battery. My phone can last the whole day when it's on idle. Battery is 3-4.5% per hour when on idle. It balloons to 15%—25% per hour once I start using it which is very annoying. These are the only apps I use and I always close them all the time. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, viber, Google voice, BBM, Gmail. What can you guys suggest to improve battery life? I don't believe people saying that they last 2 days or even the whole day. That's complete BS. I'll attach a screen shot on from better batter stats when I started making this, I started from 100%
12% in 33mins. Geeeez

Right. Bad battery is very likely. That and should be using better battery stats to get a picture of what's going on.
It's not the phone and naming the ROM as if that has something to do with it is bad form.

What he said. I am stock but rooted and using Juice Defender, Greenify, toggling gps and mobile data off etc, I get full day on high usage and 28 hours on light usage. Must be a bad battery.
Meh, did some math. 12% in 33 min did cross-multiplication for 99% battery used, got 272.25 minuets divided by 60 to get an hourly total. You'll be getting 4.5 hours on screen time.
I don't personally think that's bad. Did some more calculations for Nexus 5 on battery. Heard it's getting about 3.5 hours screen on time, so with that to get your 4.5 hours screen on time the nexus 5 would need about a 2960mah battery.
Well, firstly, you should believe that some people's last 2 days or so; as I've seen photos posted by "battery life enthusiasts" in the better-battery-stats thread and other places showing it's possible. 12% in 33 minutes isn't that bad and is around a stock TW battery expectancy.
You're on MF3.. which means you cannot run an AOSP rom, so almost anything your running isn't going to be extremely lightweight for battery. ALL TW based roms will drain battery more than a single AOSP or GPE rom, as the system is a lot more heavy.
I greenify anything associated with the google-cloud or push-notifications, if I want to know my Facebook updates I can click on the app myself. I have location services turned off because there's ZERO reasons to use it unless I have a need for my GPS. Do you know that MANY apps use your location service even when not running and cause constant wake-locks. I've also moved my Google Services Framework from a system app to a user app with Titanium Backup Pro so I can greenify it and completely disconnect myself from Google if I have no needs for the play store or push-notifications. Gmail and gmaps can still run independently fine without the Framework, the GSF is also a major cause of wake-lock battery drain. Even if you greenify google apps, the GSF is still going to cause numerous wake-locks and affect battery.
I don't have a photo at the moment, since my phone is plugged in all the time anyway (just to keep it topped off), but I've had it run for almost 2 days without charging it; with occasional screen time, gaming, and having it idle. I'm also on a non-TW AOKP rom that's very very lightweight.

Here is my battery so far. As you can see, it barely has been used since yesterday. Screen on time is 25 minutes. Wifi is always on and I weather widget reloads every 4 hours. GPS is off though. Obviously, it lasts slightly less than a day if I use extensively with games, web browsing, email. Considering how much I usually use the phone, it does last 2 days.
Im on MF3 and using Wicked rom with SS.
If you get a new battery....
If you are thinking about getting a new battery and don't mind the extra bulk, go for the 7500mAh Zero Lemon Battery. I got one over a month ago and it will EASILY get 3+ days of battery life. It will add a lot of mass to the phone, but if you are looking for stupid battery life, check it out. Right now I have 26 minutes of screen time and 92% battery life left. It's been off charger for over 8 hours.

Edit: Forgot to mention I'm Full Stock / Full Lock.
I have noticed the standby battery on this phone is AMAZING!... but the screen on time is horrible for me too :S... can barely get 3 hours and that is with like 30% brightness... sigh
people said amoled helps save battery... but i used to have muchhh better battery with my htc one
So these are my stats on very light usage. Very good idle time. Just 2.5 hrs screen time

[Q] Screen on time?

Hi!
I have a relatively new Nexus 4, which I got NIB about 6 months ago. The battery life is ok for a phone with these specs, it easily lasts 1.5-2 days, depending on usage. But my screen on time is really bad: I rarely get more than 3 hours, usually more like 2-2.5 hours when reading emails, Twitter and Facebook (no games). Everything is fully stock, I have very few apps, and other than really bad screen on time can't complain.
Reading about people having 4-6 hours of screen on time, I wonder what I could do to improve mine. I'm so upset because of this issue, that started thinking about selling my Nexus and buying a Motorola I would appreciate your suggestions!

Depends on who you ask. Some says flashing a custom rom will help, some says flashing a custom rom with a kernel, and others say just a kernel. As far as the best option, you will have to experiment to find the best configuration for you.

There are the usual fixes:
Turn off as much syncing as possible
Turn off location / bluetooth / nfc
Turn down brightness (although auto is relatively smart)
Beyond that, not sure how you only get 2-3
You can try apps that monitor battery usage more closely to get a better idea of what is actually draining your battery so quickly

Well, it would seem that the screen eats the battery, as I only get very poor battery life when the screen is on, otherwise the phone lasts ~2 days on a single charge with WiFi, 3G and GPS on. The brightness is set to auto, but I still get only 2-3 hours of screen usage with really simple apps (Chrome, Twitter, sometimes Facebook) and then the battery dies.

2-3 hours of screen time is normal.
You got to take into consideration;
this phones battery is NOT big, its small.
This phone has an LCD screen, the power is going to run out much FASTER than OLED screens.
Be happy you get 2-3 hours. Some people can barely get one.
I get 4+hour but with 6 hours total battery time. I can also get 1 1/2 days of light usage.
This phone isn't going to give you 5+ hours screen time on top of 12+ hours of battery life. Its just not gonna happen.

Are you saying that 2-3 hours of screen time are normal with stock ROM and I shouldn't expect any improvement?

For the most part, I don't keep up with the amount of battery life because my phone and tablet is never too far from a charger. Although I have watched the battery drain while charging when I watch a lot of videos on YouTube tho.

You might try a custom kernel that's optimized for extended battery life. You'll get small but noticeable improvement, just don't expect miracles!

Lol. I'm lucky if I break 1.5 hours

Uhh, I see. Thank you, guys!
Looks like my Nexus will be replaced with a Motorola after all
I get about 4 hours of on screen time with moderate gaming with CM rom.
Biggest difference compared to stock is that a lot of the services that run on stock are not installed or turned on.
Apps that constantly check in email/facebook/etc.. can drain things as well. Increasing the interval between checks, or disabling it altogether and just doing it manually would help.
BetterBatteryStats can help you narrow down what is giving you the biggest drain.

i can agree with you: my girlfriend and me got both a nexus 4. she has to charge her phone every day when she comes from school and also get not more than 2,5h screen on time. her phone is completely stock and loaded with a lot of beauty-apps, lol.
i rooted my nexus 4 and run paranoid android beta 6 with the stock gapps package and the hells.core b44t3 at the stock settings and iam getting at least 5h screen on time when useing my phone for about 20h-30h. iam just useing whtsapp, messenger, facebook, instagram, web browsing and google+, not playing games with it. i also tunred 3g off and use only wifi or 2g, because these apps dont need 3g necessarily.

NExus 4 Battery

HEy guys
I know how much we love our nexus 4, but I am really getting irritated at its battery now. How much is everyone else getting on a normal day usage which involves 3g usage half day half day wifi, song listening, google now on. I just wish to know if i am doing something wrong.
Cheers
My nexus 4 runs with ~3,5 hours screen on time through the day. Heavily listen to music, chatting, browsing news and internet but without google now and gps off.

google now disabled , nfc disabled , location disabled , brightness set to about 30 % and using hells doctor kernel on default settings i get about 4 hours of SOT which involves playing san andreas , listening to music , reading news and reviews on chrome browser some sms texts here and there, so if i just listen to music and use chrome i can squeeze about 5 and half hours of SOT i.e using wifi , and my nexus 4 is more than year old now so its still going strong as before i think oh yeah even if i used google now it had little to no impact on battery life for me
Everything turned on, full power screen, about 3 hours SOT. I'm using Hells Doctor kernel and an untouched phone drains less than 1% power hour.

GPS sucks a lot of batterie. Do you use location service in batterie save mode aka high accuracy?
Why would GPS use a lot of battery when it's not being used?

Unless you disable it, GPS will kick on from time to time if you have apps running in the background, like weather widgets.

When I bought the nexus 4 I would get around 3-4 hours of sot(screen on time). Its by this number people judge their battery life.
However I use paranoid android with their stock kernel/ Franco kernel which boosted my screen on time to 5-6 hours.
If you want a better battery life, my opinion is to flash a new Rom.
Another great app that did wonders for my battery was greenify. If you could get the donation package combined with xposed installer, your phones battery life would be extended by a large amount.
Hope this helps!
For have the best battery ever turn off your phone
