[Q] Screen on time? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I have a relatively new Nexus 4, which I got NIB about 6 months ago. The battery life is ok for a phone with these specs, it easily lasts 1.5-2 days, depending on usage. But my screen on time is really bad: I rarely get more than 3 hours, usually more like 2-2.5 hours when reading emails, Twitter and Facebook (no games). Everything is fully stock, I have very few apps, and other than really bad screen on time can't complain.
Reading about people having 4-6 hours of screen on time, I wonder what I could do to improve mine. I'm so upset because of this issue, that started thinking about selling my Nexus and buying a Motorola I would appreciate your suggestions!

Depends on who you ask. Some says flashing a custom rom will help, some says flashing a custom rom with a kernel, and others say just a kernel. As far as the best option, you will have to experiment to find the best configuration for you.

Are you saying that 2-3 hours of screen time are normal with stock ROM and I shouldn't expect any improvement?

There are the usual fixes:
Turn off as much syncing as possible
Turn off location / bluetooth / nfc
Turn down brightness (although auto is relatively smart)
Beyond that, not sure how you only get 2-3
You can try apps that monitor battery usage more closely to get a better idea of what is actually draining your battery so quickly

Well, it would seem that the screen eats the battery, as I only get very poor battery life when the screen is on, otherwise the phone lasts ~2 days on a single charge with WiFi, 3G and GPS on. The brightness is set to auto, but I still get only 2-3 hours of screen usage with really simple apps (Chrome, Twitter, sometimes Facebook) and then the battery dies.

2-3 hours of screen time is normal.
You got to take into consideration;
this phones battery is NOT big, its small.
This phone has an LCD screen, the power is going to run out much FASTER than OLED screens.
Be happy you get 2-3 hours. Some people can barely get one.
I get 4+hour but with 6 hours total battery time. I can also get 1 1/2 days of light usage.
This phone isn't going to give you 5+ hours screen time on top of 12+ hours of battery life. Its just not gonna happen.

For the most part, I don't keep up with the amount of battery life because my phone and tablet is never too far from a charger. Although I have watched the battery drain while charging when I watch a lot of videos on YouTube tho.

You might try a custom kernel that's optimized for extended battery life. You'll get small but noticeable improvement, just don't expect miracles!

Uhh, I see. Thank you, guys!
Looks like my Nexus will be replaced with a Motorola after all

I get about 4 hours of on screen time with moderate gaming with CM rom.
Biggest difference compared to stock is that a lot of the services that run on stock are not installed or turned on.
Apps that constantly check in email/facebook/etc.. can drain things as well. Increasing the interval between checks, or disabling it altogether and just doing it manually would help.
BetterBatteryStats can help you narrow down what is giving you the biggest drain.

i can agree with you: my girlfriend and me got both a nexus 4. she has to charge her phone every day when she comes from school and also get not more than 2,5h screen on time. her phone is completely stock and loaded with a lot of beauty-apps, lol.
i rooted my nexus 4 and run paranoid android beta 6 with the stock gapps package and the hells.core b44t3 at the stock settings and iam getting at least 5h screen on time when useing my phone for about 20h-30h. iam just useing whtsapp, messenger, facebook, instagram, web browsing and google+, not playing games with it. i also tunred 3g off and use only wifi or 2g, because these apps dont need 3g necessarily.

Looks good!
What is your brightness setting?
More info about your settings please?

Auto mainly but i adjust sometimes upwards, as ICS auto brightness can be a bit too dark for me sometimes.
I turn wifi, gps off when im not using it, NFC is off if that makes a difference. 3g is on always. Nothing special, I just "use it" as I normally would.
I think 2 days and 8 hours is pretty good going?

No idea feel free to ask me specific questions!
what apps have you used in this 2+ day period?? games? streaming video? web-browsing? These are the most common uses and they are also the biggest battery killers. I'm sure if I had my phone in airplane mode & barely used it at all I could get better battery life than that. Please give us more details on the specific apps, etc. you ran in this period (to the best of your memory, of course )

Hmm probably only an hours worth of "apparatus" - game, good couple of hours on google reader, facebook etc. no more than an hour on the phone.
my "normal" usage really; not trying to be overly conservative, but also not constantly on. certainly nothing to suggest that I'm getting any worse battery life than I did on 2.3.x
Next time you get this kind of usage from a full charge down to zero let us know your screen on time please.

Battery life stats don't mean much if you don't really use the phone for those 2 days. I'm at 16hours with 66percent left.

Here's mine. A day and half. Similar battery performance with GB even though that Android OS is way too high (higher than Screen)
Yes; that Android OS' looks like a statistic and therefore has a 87.8% chance of being made up on the spot (like that one!).
This is a sample of my battery life and quite unusual for me; Mobile Standby is the highest because I spent five or so hours in an area with very poor coverage, when it could get a signal it was 2G.
Wifi is on when I know I have a hotspot I can use. AutoSync off unless I need it. Bluetooth wasn't used. Screen brightness mostly at the minimum with some time at Auto. Latitude constantly running in automatic update.
Screen on time was 2 hours, 30 minutes and that included approximately 20 minutes of Google Maps (not Navigation).
The biggest difference I've made on my device is to log out of Google+. My use is mostly checking two Gmail accounts, browsing the web, using DropBox / Documents-to-Go, texting, some photography.
Disabling Latitude's AutoUpdate stops the device from waking up with the screen off (all those little blue ticks on the use bar) and makes a big difference to battery life when I'm on the move.
How can you guys take screenshot on stock?
Hold down power and vol. down simultaneously for a second or two for a screenshot.
Also, nice battery life. I've been running about a day with ~50% left, 2 hours of screen time and somewhere around 30 - 45mins gaming. WiFi on all day and calls/texting was minimal.
Have a look https://plus.google.com/u/0/105051985738280261832/posts/FV3LVtdVxPT More insight regarding Android OS from google engineer.
I am running stock 4.0.3 ICS and battery lasts only 10-11 hours.(Data Disabled, Occasional Wifi Use, Brightness reduced to minimum.).

Do I Have a Battery Problem?

I have had my Note for 9 days now and wonder if my battery may have an issue. Yes the phone is entering deep sleep, No I don't have any specific app that is running it dry. Screen takes most of the juice. I have it set at automatic brightness. Everything is off. It does auto sync. Signal is fantastic. I can hardly get 3/4ths of a day. I usually spend 30 minutes on the phone. 30 emails, 2 hours browsing, 30 minutes on tapatalk. This has always been my pattern and coming from a Motorola photon I always made the day easily. I'm on ISC (stock) not rooted just plain old stock. I'm thinking maybe a battery problem? What do you all think? Thanks for your help.

I've only had my note a couple days. I've gotten about 10-12 hours out of it both days. But that was with what I would call moderate to less then moderate usage. A little web browsing and facebook, probably less then 2 hours total. Maybe 20-30 texts and reading emails for maybe 30 minutes and 10-15 minutes of calls. I'm not sure what to expect, I am coming from a rooted HTC evo which I ran a lot of custom roms/kernels on, so I got great battery life with it. But I don't remember how it performed stock. The Note gets me through my work day, but not much more.
Charge the battery to full.
Let it drain completely (till it turns itself off).
Charge the battery to full once more.
I don't know the science behind it, nor does everyone benefit from doing this. (Something to do with calibration of the battery) but I do this after every major update, or new phone. I'm currently sat on 44% battery after 24hours usage (Moderate, certainly not heavy usage).
You have to remember the note will consume a large amount of battery simply because of its screen size (As you've noted its the biggest offender).
Someone with more experience/knowledge will hopefully be along shortly to give you better more informed advice but this is what I know from experience.
Normally what I have seen is I get approx near
4 hours of battery life (screen on time)

Batterylife on samsung ics (XXLPY) is terrible if you compare it to gingerbread. It is nearly cut down in half. I guess touchwizz has gotten more hungry than before or samsung has altered ics so much that the advantages are gone.

I do this method every 2 or 3 months on all my devices (iPod, phone, Laptop) so that the percentage or battery shown on the devices is more accurate. I read somewhere that since most of us charge out devices before battery dies completely, like we charge it when its 80 or 60 or even 20 instead of charging it when it completely dies, doing so makes the accuracy of the percentage very low but we can't help it but to charge it at what ever percentage for various reason thus, I always drain all my battery on devices completely than charge it full before using (minus the first full charging). Any ways if your ICS it seems to be a bug, it cannot be fixed until a new update.

Do the charge/drain cycle.
I've done this and improved the battery life immensely.
Currently my note has been on for 3d 21h 16m 1s and has 11% charge left - okay so it hasn't been used much over the weekend but that not a bad standby time.

Battery Life Worry/Question

My battery life has been pretty good. However, the number one thing consistently using battery is "Android System". Is this normal? Thanks!
Same here. On all my other Android phones Screen is the top user.
U are using ips technology on the screen unlike amold that saamy used which kills the battery in hours in full brightness . As you could see that the iPhone has good batttery life because the 720p ips screen.

I've found that rebooting the phone after taking it off of charge, the battery life is awesome. There seem to be some wakelocks that kill the battery and for some reason, charging has something to do with it.
I don't know if this is why, but I heard the G2 has special screen technology that greatly reduces battery drain.

Those claiming that Android System > Screen for battery use on the G2...I'm coming from a Nexus 4 which is also IPS.

Yeah, somthing about 30% lower battery use or something like that. It's 6 hours since I took mine off the charger, must admit very moderate use, some toying, some photos, some mails and 1 phone call. but still, my phone is at 96% battery. My old S2 would be at 60% at this point.

I tried this and it worked. However, one instance is not proof I guess haha. I will experiment more tomorrow (namely, not rebooting after charging) and let you know what I find. I wonder what specifically about charging may cause wakelocks?
Over 48 hours of use, more than 50% battery left. 3,5 hours screen time. Android system worst offender with 35%, screen 2nd with 25%.

If you look at the programs listed under Android System, try uninstalling the ones that you would never use. This has seemed to help me. But to be honest it was kind of unnessary because the battery life is just crazy badass. In a few weeks or so when the devs have there way this phone is going to be epic.
It is two things, which by the way are great news.
A) LG's screen tech which doesn't refresh pixels when the images are static
and B) IPS
What we can't control is screen power consumption, but guess what? We can control android system consumption through kernels and roms. This means that we can *hopefully* expect EVEN BETTER! battery life since the screen is, for 80% of users, the main culprit for energy drain.
Just a quick note that flashing CleanROM on my ATT LG G2 basically took my battery life from <20% at the end of the workday to just under 80% at the end of the work day with increased use on the CleanROM install. Highly recommended.
Been off the charger since 6:50 this morning. Sitting here at work doing some texting, Words With Friends, and a test call for a co-worker...96% at 12:15pm. My Nexus would have been at 40% by now.
So is Android System different from Android OS?
I normally can squeeze out 15-22 hours since installing Snapdragon Battery Guru. Which has been working great until today.
Here's my situation today:
-100% charge at around 1230am. Light to moderate usage leaves me with
-77% between night before and waking up (only dropped like 2% overnight) at
-830, then i worked from 9 to 1230 so i didnt use my phone too much. But since ive been off work ive been using it more so im not too surprised about my low battery level currently.
But what concerns me is Android OS using half my battery! It says its been active for more than 4 hours and i dont understand where it comes from. Its way more than my screen usage even with a screen time of little over 3 hours.
Anyone know whats up with Android OS? It doesnt tell me what is running when i select it so im lost.
Also ive done many of the suggestions in this thread with positive results. Ive been monitoring my wakelocks and since doing some of the suggestions on here nlpcollector has actually gone down.

Just to benchmark .... I used the phone moderatley ..
I did.. a little over 50 hours of total on time
4.75 hours of on screen time,
2 hours of spotify with bluetooth for the entire time,
2 hours of MapMyRun with GPS running ..
then various text messaging and a couple phone calls
The only modifications i've made to the stop experiance is taking of google's location service for programs, but leaving GPS active .. and changing the screen to auto-brightness, baseline of 50%.
I came from the SGS2 ..... with 1 hour of on screen time and the other spotify and bluetooth .. i'd be around 10-20% after 8-10 hours !!!!!
Mines pretty awesome.

I'm not sure if my battery is defective or not. Right out of the box was around 75% and I drained it until it turned off then charged it to full.
Over the next few days at work it's on wifi and then on 3G/4G before /after work. I pull it from the charger at 7:30am and by 7pm its at 40%. Then on Friday night I unplugged it at 12am with 100% and woke up the next day with 80%. It's dropping like 1% about 10-15minutes. Would a factory reset fix the battery drain? or call for a replacement?

Battery life struggles

Is anyone else struggling to get more than 3hrs screen on time in a 12 hour day. I don't game or watch a lot of videos. It seems like the phone isn't going to sleep when I'm not using it. Just testing the waters if my unit is defective. I mostly web browse and read stuff on g+. My screen brightness is a little less than half with adaptive brightness on and enhanced voice over lte is disabled on Verizon. Thanks for the help.

3 hours of screen on time seems pretty good for a phone with a screen this big and with brightness around half way up. Is 3 hours SOT bringing you down to like 0 battery?
What do your battery stats say that make you think your phone isn't sleeping?
I only really tested the battery and checked the stats twice and I think the second time I had 2.5 hours of SOT over the course of 13 hours and my battery was at about 38% (also on Verizon).
I think that is pretty reasonable. If I could get 4 hours of SOT from full battery until dead I would be fine with it. Others have been posting much longer battery lives though.
I have read on this forum that one person tested the phone with the screen looping a video at full brightness and it lasted over 5 hours. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63642067&postcount=391
Some people are showing screen shots of over 5 hours of SOT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63690175&postcount=462
Off charge 23 hrs ,been using mix if WiFi and 4G all day and some poor signal areas
Do you have your bluetooth always on?
No never on unless I need it ,have WiFi on all the time and toggle mobile data on and off as I need it
Yeah my mobile network signal is mostly orange and red. I keep Bluetooth on all day for my smart watch
See it is awake all the time I made a long phone call today so I can't judge the battery today.

I found my moto 360 was keeping my phone awake (possible bug?). so I disconnected my watch and the phone actually slept when the screen was off! Give it a try!
I just have a pebble but I'll give it a try.
At 2 hours in 13 mins screen on time. Phone seems to be sleeping now but there is a bug in my battery stats. Any clue?
Here are the screen shots
Still not impressed. The phone isn't staying awake now that I disabled Bluetooth but isn't going to doze. I have purposely tried not to use my phone today.

I am not sure why people keep complaining about BT on. I leave mine on all the time. Although i don't use my smart watch any more, so it is only connected in my car and my BT speakers at home when I want to listen to music in bedroom or so. I don't have any drains. I get 4-5 hours SOT in 24 hours. This is a first for me always owning nexus in the past. I am very happy. I also started testing the force doze mode on screen off setting with greenify today. It is making standby noticeably even better.

Nexus 6P - Bad SOT

Hey guys, I'm very new to XDA but I really hope someone can help me out. I'm a nexus fan and its just the best but I bought the nexus 6P thinking that I'm going to get around 6 Hours SOT considering I used to get around 4 with my N5 with the same level of usage. I want to know what I'm doing wrong or if I'm overlooking something.
Let me tell you about my phone and how I use it.
I have Elemental X + Pure nexus installed
Elemental x settings are on Ghost Pepper and I put CPU governmer on ' ondemand '
• I don't have Facebook and Messenger installed (These two were some SERIOUSS battery hoggers )
• I use google chrome push notifications as a replacement
• I use snapchat but not very excessively
• Turned off all gestures as i never used them
• Adaptive display is off
• Ambient display is off
• Notification Lights are off
• GOOGLE automatically syncs everything at anytime but other than that i manually sync whatsapp
• Location is always off except at rare times
• I use bluetooth to connect to my car to play music for an hour daily.
• Brightness is at 30-60% for 3/5th the day, 2/5th of the time it's lower than 30%.
• LTE is on for aboutt 4-5 hours a day and the rest is on WIFI.
Furthermore, I use my laptop more than my phone so I'm constantly picking up my phone and am not allowing it to fall into deep sleep for a good amount of time except at night or when im playing some serious CSGO; I noticed that its during the screen off time where I'm losing so much battery.
Now after reading all of this, do you still think I deserve to get that much screen on time?
Is there some setting I have missed out or is it the kernel + rom combination, I am really frustrated. This phone is magical but the battery is just so disappointing, I want at least 5 hours on screen time (I just barely reach 4 hours SOT)
Oh and let me further explain how the battery dies. Usually I'll be browsing facebook or 9gag and using snapchat and lets say its at 90%, it wont budge for 10 minutes or even more regardless of how heavily I use it. But the moment I turn the screen off and turn it back on, woooshh I'll lose 1%, and when I start using it again, another percent drops instantly. This is just seriously irritating and I have no clue as to what I need to do.
Thank you for any help!
No one I've ever read of gets 6 hours of screen time on this device. Between 4.5-5+ is pretty typical.
Playing music while the screen is off will have a pretty big impact on sot, especially if it's playing via the phones speakers. I know that has a big impact on my sot. There are some screenshots on here of 6 hours sot, but I suspect they set the screen timeout very high while leaving the device inactive. 4 hours is the average sot on this device from my experience.

GhostPepper is meant to run on interactive governor not ondemand. Disable TouchBoost under CPU in EXKM.
As for the rest I can't comment because you use the phone differently than mine.
I came to understand that phones are different from each other. Some have 5-8 hours of SOT and some have 3-5 hours SOT. Usage is different from each person and phone.
I would agree with several of the others that SoT is more typically 4-5 hours...I use my phone pretty heavily so I'm probably toward the shorter end of that, but even with a somewhat degraded battery (70% according to accubattery) I can still get 3 or at least close. Now granted I was only getting 1-1.5 but I went through and wiped my phone, heavily limiting the number of apps I had installed (I had a ton), and reducing the number of Google apps and services (now, etc.) that I used. Other than that just a couple minor kernel tweaks (hawktail6p profile, disable touchboost, disable zram, etc. not even sure on that last one lol)...anyways getting much better battery afterwards.
I get 2 hours of sot. My phone is about a year-and-a-half old.
I have tried all sorts of ROMs and different kernels and every tweet you can think of to try to extend my battery life. But nothing works. I'm going to have to just get a different phone soon.

Choder...I have also had my Nexus 6P since the first week it was released. I also was getting horrible battery life and I decided to order a new battery and replace it. I can tell you that my factory battery over almost a year and 3 months, had degraded horribly.
Remember when you first got it charged it up to full, the battery percentage would read 100 percent for almost a half hour BEFORE dropping. Well, it's like that again with this new battery I ordered off of ebay. Routinely getting between 5 and 6 hours SOT. I don't use my device for games, so its browsing, youtube, checking email and messages throughout the day. Don't get a new phone...spend the 13 bucks on a new battery and save the cash.

i've seen the DIY battery replacement video on youtube. Looks difficult IMO. what did you think? Have you ever done anything like that before? really interested in trying but intimidated and don't want to bork my phone....
I am getting 2.5h SOT....any governor, any kernel, any ROM....just a bad device to buy for a good battery life.
I mean, it's frickin huge!! Of course you should expect 4h...but 2.5h cmon....I swear of God there is something wrong with Android...my phone turns off at 35% saying Power (0%) Shutting down...WTF?!?

That shutdown at 30% is a known issue. You should RMA your phone. Huawei extended the warranty at least through the end of this month.

If you find DIY intimidating you can always get a quote from a phone repair place. It would be cheaper than getting a new phone but you have to do some extreme things to get long battery life out of the 6P because the phone wasn't really made that way. Rooting, using a kernel tuned for battery savings (which will likely affect the performance of the phone) and using Naptime (which puts the phone into Doze as soon as the screen goes off) will all increase overall battery life.

It's not as difficult as it looks. Just make sure you have the proper tools. A heat gun, the hobby knife to fit between the aluminum body and the plastic screen housing.
Once you get the separation you can use a guitar pick to undo the clips around the edges of the 6p. Just take your time.

So you haven't seen all. I can use my phone and get 6 to 7h SOT (check here on XDA and you will see a lot of people achieving the same). Places where LTE is very bad combined with Google services trying to sync whatever is the biggest drainer here that can bring me down to 4h.

We'll I average 6:41 sot based on gsam averages. My phone rarely gets below 50-55% before I'm charging that night (9am-12am) the last time I was at 50% was a could days ago and was at 3:40 sot. The biggest thing I do is on any rom or kernel...
First is turn off all the sync under Google. That means contacts, calendar... Everything. No reason to let all the stuff just sync all day long. If I add a contract I go in account, Google and sync my contacts. The next thing I do is turn off all the background data syncing under data usage, cellular data usage for apps that need not sync. I leave days syncing for things like Google app, text apps browser, things your need to sync. Put location to battery saving unless I need high accuracy.
That's it, it's not rocket science, of you're still getting bad sot, your phone is likely with bad signal, not sleeping from a rouge app or maybe the battery is degraded a lot. If you're getting the shutdown issue, then RMA your phone, that's a bad bug.
In my case I was talking about sync under 'backup and reinit'. Having to switch off normal google sync would be a bit of a hassle. I use gmail (which is crap but haven't reconnected k9mail yet) and more important i use keep to share stuffs. I prefer sync over sot and I anyway reach a day.
But in my case, believe me, the root cause is bad gapps sync when having atrocious 3G (LTE little less draining) which is half of my day.
At home data connection is OK and I can get past 6h as I said. My device is only 6 months old. I have an estimated capacity of 3440mAh.
